From the StewardSHIP A note for our Ministry Leaders
The Stewardship Office would like to help you find volunteers for specific tasks or projects that your church or parish team or committee may be working on. Are you in need of bakers? Or envelope stuffers? Or someone to make phone calls? Sometimes when we provide a very specific need or detailed explanation of the type of help needed, it may make someone realize that they are able to help with that need, rather than the usual vague “volunteers needed” request. We’ll use this column in the bulletin to help recruit new people for the many different tasks that are involved in all of the stewardship that happens within our parish. Please contact Kathleen in the Parish Office at 304-242-1560 Ext. 9 or [email protected] to have your list of volunteer needs added to this area of the bulletin. A Note for Parishioners Are you looking for new ways to serve God, our community and our parish? There are dozens of ways to get involved. Watch this column to learn where we need additional volunteers. Or, if you’re eager to get started right away, call Kathleen in the Parish Office at 242.1560, or email [email protected].

“WHO WANTS TO BE A HEAVENLY MILLIONAIRE”
LOCAL CATHOLIC LORE Saint Michael Parish School opened its doors on Edgington Lane in what year? A. 1897 B. 1907 C. 1917 D. 1927 Last week’s answer: Wheeling Central’s original nickname was the Fighting Irish. It is my contention that, once Central realized Charleston Catholic was also the “Fighting Irish,” the local school felt extremely unworthy to keep that mascot. Therefore, in the late 1950s Central became known as the “Marooned Knights.” *Parish disclaimer - The opinion, comments and sarcasm expressed by The Heavenly Millionaire are not shared by the employees of the Parish, Staff or School. D.A.R.E. Graduation The 5th grade students worked hard for the past 10 weeks to complete the D.A.R.E. Program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). With the help of their instructor, Chief John Schultz, the students learned about stress, positive ways to deal with stress and the harmful effects of drugs, alcohol, and smoking. The students learned a lot and had fun. Each student pledged to not abuse drugs or alcohol. Special recognition was given to Ryan Blair and Ava Hanson for winning the D.A.R.E. essay contest. Good job to all students!

School Picnic Our annual end-of-the-year school picnic is Thursday, May 24 at Wheeling Park. For those new to SMPS, the school picnic is a wonderful way for our school community to join together for a day of food, fun, and friends. Children need to be accompanied by a parent for the day's events. The Parent Association has sent home order forms for purchasing activity bands for parents and children. Please fill out the form for your family and return to school if you haven't done so. On the day of the picnic, SMPS families should report to the ice rink by 10:30 to check-in and pick up their pre-purchased wrist bands. Please note that students do not come to school this day--they go directly to the park. This is still considered a school day and attendance is taken. Lunch will be served in the rink mid-day. All park activities are free with the purchase of wrist bands.

Catholic Cemeteries Nationwide Celebrate Memorial
Day “Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute”
To Honor Military
As the country prepares to celebrate Memorial Day, thousands of Catholic Cemeteries across the United States will participate in a national celebration, "Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes." This national program, developed by the Catholic Cemetery Conference, will honor those men and women who died while serving in the armed forces, as well as recognize both our active military and military veterans who have served our country. Our diocesan cemetery, Mount Calvary, in Wheeling will participate in this national program by having a special Mass celebrated in the Bishops’ Chapel on Memorial Day, May 28, at 10am. All are invited to attend this Mass and to pray for our military personnel and to remember in a special way all those who have given their lives in service to our country. Veterans and active military are especially invited to attend this Mass. For more information, please contact the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Office at 304-242-0460. Grace & Peace, Deacon Doug Breiding
