Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living The St. Thérèse of Carmel Choir will perform Requiem for the Living for chorus and chamber orchestra by Dan Forest this Sunday, April 14th, at 3:00PM in the church. There will be a reception following the concert.

In five movements, Forrest’s Requiem, creates a narrative that speaks to the living and their own struggle with pain and sorrow as they mourn the dead.

This work has received rave reviews both nationally and globally. The program also includes well-known excerpts from the Fauré Requiem and a

bright, spirited contemporary piece I’ll be On My Way by Los Angeles composer Shawn Kirchner.

All are welcome!

Palm Sunday and Holy Week Palm Sunday and Holy Week

On Palm Sunday we begin our journey into Holy Week. Our journey begins with the proclamation of the Gospel describing Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. The Liturgy of the Word then culminates with reading the Passion narrative, and we are thrust into the reality of the Pascal Mystery. This most holy of weeks invites each and every Catholic to reflect on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and how it impacts our everyday lives. Yet if we could pin down one word to describe Jesus’ attitude during the events leading up to his Passion and the Passion itself, what would we choose? Brave? Determined? Almighty? Loving? All of these are, true and there are many more. But how about humble?

Humility might be the perfect and most profound word to describe Jesus’ attitude leading up and during his passion. Beginning with his entrance into Jerusalem Jesus shows us his humility by entering the city on a donkey, many of his disciples and those who admired him want to make him king, but he enters Jerusalem on a simple and unassuming animal. This attitude only continues as we get closer and closer to his Passion.

On Holy Thursday we celebrate the institution of the Eucharist, or the feast of the Lord’s Supper. But we celebrate it in quite an interesting way. The priest imitates Christ by washing the feet of parishioners, just as Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. And Jesus says, “If I the master and teacher have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:14). This is a profound act of humility; the master becomes the servant. And it should not be lost on us that this occurred in the context of the institution of the Eucharist. The Eucharist and Jesus’ act of washing his disciples’ feet are interconnected. The body and blood of Christ that we receive at every Mass calls us to have this humble attitude of one who is prepared to reach out in charity and love to those in most need. Furthermore, the Eucharist itself is a profound act of humility in which Christ, the incarnate God, the one through whom all things came to be, allows simple bread and wine to become himself so that we his creation may bring him so close to ourselves that we become the “Body of Christ.”

Jesus’ last great act of humility is his complete dedication to the will of the Father during his Passion. “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; stull, not my will but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42). Even from the cross he was taunted by the chief priests, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe him.” (Matthew 27:42). Jesus submits to the most dishonorable death imaginable in the ancient world. Jesus, the incarnate Son of God, is so humble that he allows his own creations to put him to death, ultimately to save us from death.

So this Holy Week let us reflect on the humility of Christ, and reflect on how we can best emulate his great humility in our day to day lives.
