* * * * * * * * Friday is a Holy Day!

Catholics around the world will gather for Mass on Friday to celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Masses here will be celebrated as follows: Thu., 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM (in Spanish) Fri., 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 12:15 PM and 5:30 PM SORRY, THERE WILL BE NO SPANISH MASS ON FRIDAY.

Christian Initiation (R.C.I.A.) During the 9:30 AM Mass today, we formally acknowledge those who are preparing to enter the Catholic Church y means of the RCIA Rite of Acceptance: Robert Weber, Alicia Mileena Javier, and Kokuo Magnon. Congratulations! [Aedan Aktulun is completing his Sacraments of Christian Initiation].

Wednesday is Saint Nicholas Day! Help your children know the Christian origins of our customs.

Saint Nicholas – “Sinter-klaas” in Dutch, lived three hundred years after Christ in the city of Myra, in present-day TURKEY. He was an OLD, BEARDED Catholic pastor for a large parish and a BISHOP. One cold winter, he heard about a family with three daughters who could not afford to have them marry because they had no dowry. He put on his bishop’s RED CLOTHING (vestments) and RED HAT (miter) and went to the girls’ home. Then he secretly tossed THREE BAGS OF GOLD through their living room window, and they landed in the girls’ stockings, drying over the fireplace. On December 6, 343, he was put to death for being a Christian.

Christmas for Abraham House

We have set up in the church our annual “Angel” Christmas Tree for Abraham House. Abraham House is a program run by French brothers and sisters and local volunteers which ministers to the families of the incarcerated. Each of the little angel ornaments on the tree has the name, age, sex, and size of a person (adult or child) in need of a practical gift. You are invited to take an angel (or two!) and shop! The ornament will also serve as your name tag, to be securely attached to your gift. Wrapped presents should be brought to the Rectory by next week, December 10th. Please note: As the gifts will be given out at a House Christmas party, we ask all gifts come to the Rectory on time so that no child is left empty-handed. Thanks!

* * * * * * * * The Year of Our Lord, 2018

Happy New Year, Christian! Beginning today, the First Sunday of Advent, the sanctuary is decorated simply in blue-hued purple [violet] [correcting an error in last week’s Bulletin]. Catholics around the world begin to hear Lectionary Cycle “B,” featuring The Gospel According to Mark. See next paragraph. We ask that you do your best to “s l o w d o w n” the way you and your families prepare your “spiritual selves.” The commercial celebration of Christmas will take care of itself! * * * * * * * *

BANNS OF MARRIAGE ZACHERY TADY & MARY ANDERSON

* * * * * * * *

The Gospel According to Mark Starting on the First Sunday of Advent, Catholics around the globe will be hearing proclaimed, for the most part, selections from the Gospel According to Mark, which is the first Gospel to have been written. To give you a thirst for his unique approach to Jesus’ story, here are a few qualities: – it is sparse and brief and it ends abruptly, – the linguistic style is unrefined, – it contains an engaging type of storytelling, – it emphasizes Jesus’ deeds over his words, – it is dominated by Jesus’ Passion, – it has a sense of end-of-the-world urgency, – it seems to have a special interest in Galilee, – it frequently explains Jewish matters, but not

Roman ones, – it assumes readers already have a basic

knowledge of Christian tradition, – it offers the most “human” Jesus, – it highlights Jesus’ disciples’ failures.

We recently took up a 2nd collection for the literature we offer for free at the back of the church. Pick up some fresh offerings when you have the chance, especially The Little Blue Book for Advent, 2017 [English or Spanish]. Please, one to a household so no one gets left out.

LESSONS & CAROLS December 17 at 7 P.M.

. Sunday, December 17, 7:00 PM, the Holy Trinity Schola Cantorum (the 11:15 Choir) will present a Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols – a service of Scripture and Song in celebration of the Coming of Our Savior. Patterned after the traditional service of Lessons & Carols offered annually at King’s College, Cambridge, this beautiful celebration will include nine different readings from Holy Scripture by parishioners (children and adults), lay staff and clergy, punctuated by magnificent works of choral music for Advent and Christmas. As this is not simply a “concert,” but a religious service, admission is FREE. Please mark your calendars and bring your friends and neighbors – a wonderful opportunity for the Parish community to come together to celebrate the season.
