The 2019 Mass Intention Book is NOW OPEN! We are accepting dates, but we cannot guarantee the time the mass will be said. Only two requests will be honored per person, one weekend and one weekday, or two weekdays. Holy days are not avail-able at this time. If you would like more than two masses, we are able to send requests to St. Ursula.

CONFRATRNITY OF CHRISTIAN MOTHERS
The “Annual Baby Shower” meeting will take place on Sunday, January 13, and will be hosted at St. Ursula Social Hall at 1:00 p.m. All women of St. Mary’s are invited to participate. Please bring unwrapped gifts, diapers or other baby items to be given to Genesis House. The special baby bottle banks distributed at the November meeting will be collected and donations sent to Women’s Choice Network. A light lunch will be served. We hope you will be able to attend to show support for mothers who choose life.

You Are My Beloved Son,
With You I Am Well Pleased As Jesus was being baptized by John in the Jordan River we are told of amazing things
happening. First, the heavens were opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove. Then, the voice of God the Father from heaven thundered, saying, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Jesus did not need to be baptized for the same reason we do. As the Son of God, he was without sin. Yet, to be baptized is to be anointed to fulfill the mission of God the Father in the world. By being baptized in the Jordan, Jesus set an example for us to follow. Through baptized we are freed from original sin, sanctified by the Holy Spirit to share in the life of God through the Sacraments and in the Church, and anointed to fulfill the mission of faith, hope, and love that God the Father has chosen for us. While the Holy Spirit does not descend like a dove he is present in and through the baptized from the moment of baptism. And while the walls of the church do not shake with the thundering voice of the Father, the halls of heaven ring with joy as every new beloved son and daughter of God is welcomed into the life of faith through baptism. Our baptism was not simply a ritual, but a life-changing event that is in effect throughout our lives. Faith Sharing for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord As John was baptizing his cousin Jesus in the Jordan River, he clearly addressed the people who “were filled with expectation.” “I am baptizing with water, but one MIGHTIER than I is coming…He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and FIRE.” The mighty One, Jesus has baptized every committed Christian and assured us that we are “beloved sons and daughters” of the heavenly Father. Let the “fire” of that reality be passed on to those in your family, friends and neighbors. CHANGE - GPS: Put in the desired location to where you want to go. Follow the highlighted path to get to your destination. I realized I have put in the wrong destination and I am going the wrong way. So what do I do? At some point I am going to have to stop and put in the right destination and then start following the new directions if I want to end up in the right place. How do I change direction in real life when I realize I’m on the wrong path?
Following Jesus requires two things: • Recognizing He is with us and • He wants us to stop going our own way and follow Him.
When you change the current direction you are going and turn around to follow Jesus he gives you all the direction you need to make sure you arrive where you need to be. PASSION PLAY AUDITIONS Set for January 15 & 17 Auditions for solo singing parts for St. Alphonsus Parish's 17th annual Passion Play will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 15, and Thursday, Jan. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the church at 201 Church Road in Wexford. The play – “Make Us Believers” – is a musical journey from Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to his death and resurrection. All are welcome to audition. If you are interested in participating in the chorus, no audition is needed – simply attend the first rehearsal on Thursday, Jan. 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the church. Nearly 90 cast and crew members participated in last year’s Passion Play, representing St. Alphonsus, St. Kilian, St. John Neumann, Sts. John & Paul, St. Teresa of Avila, Good Samaritan, St. Ferdinand, St. Richard, All Saints, St. Gregory, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox, St. Andrew the Apostle Byzantine and Orchard Hill churches. All are invited to participate. We need men, women, teens and kids to be singers, actors, musicians and stage crew. The play will be performed on Friday, April 5, at 8 p.m. and on Saturday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in the Ryan Center, which is adjacent to Blessed Francis Seelos Academy (also at 201 Church Road in Wexford). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trekkie conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John’s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the lifegiving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since “today there is a blessing on the water.” At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as “one mightier than I.” But he did as Jesus asked, and the “Holy Spirit descended” and heaven’s voice spoke to Jesus, “You are my beloved Son.” Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today’s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, “peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God’s word.
