Dear Parishioners, “Don’t you think it is important I go to Mass?” someone asked me today. Yes, I certainly do , but I think it is also important that we do what we can to care for health and safety of our neighbor as well as ourselves. The real hero is the one who sacrifices his/her needs for another. After all, that is what Jesus did and what Jesus taught. You may recall the parable of the Good Samaritan, where both a Levite and a priest used their spiritual obligation as an excuse not to help a man who had been robbed and beaten. Where you may not be sick or at high risk for the covoid-19, we have a moral responsibility to our neighbors to do what we can to preserve their health as well. The measures we have been asked to take are drastic because the danger is grave. The virus is deadly and there is no known vaccination that can protect us from it. That said, let me tell you what Blessed Sacrament is doing to allow you to practice your faith as fully as possible during this crisis. --First of all, the parish is not closed. Everyone has a dispensation from the weekend obligation to attend Mass. However, Masses are not canceled. As I write this, they are all still scheduled for the regular time. We do wish to limit attendance in order to fulfill the guidelines issued by the federal, state, and local authorities. Therefore, beginning this weekend, Mass from Blessed Sacrament can be viewed on the internet. Go to our website at www.bsps.org and click on Mass. We will tape the 4:30 Saturday evening Mass and it will be available on Sunday morning. You can make a spiritual communion, but if you wish, you can also call the parish and arrange to receive communion at another time. We still make house-calls. --The Adoration Chapel will remain open for those who wish to come and pray. The hours when it is open to the public will remain as usual. --Since Holy water has been removed from the fonts, it will be made available in the dispenser in the chapel. You can bring your own container to take it home. (If you are taking large amounts, please see one of the priests to have them bless your water.) --Since parish penance services have been canceled, we will also be offering confessions in the confessional room off the chapel, every day, Monday through Friday from noon to 1 pm. This is in addition to confessions before daily Mass and on Saturdays at 3 pm. (continued page 3)

SCHOOL NEWS! SCHOOL CLOSED Fr. Jeff — column continued --Please remember that the Adoration Chapel is for private prayer. We ask that you not pray out loud or in a way that distracts another person trying to pray privately. --The best way to know what is going on in the parish is to visit the parish website (www.bsps.org) You may also want to call the parish and be added to our flock note list. This way you will receive a text with parish reminders. --Questions can be directed to the parish office at 217-528-7521. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. --The parish depends on your stewardship and generosity in order to bring sacraments and spiritual services to you. With everything severely curtailed, our finances have suffered. Please remember to mail in your contribution or call the parish and sign up for ACH (automatic contribution). This will help us meet our obligations. Also note that SCRIP will be handled through the parish office while the school is closed. Many parishioners are also suffering financially from this crisis. A donation to H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People in Emergencies), formerly known as St. Vincent’s Society, will let our parish reach out to them. --The final thing I ask is prayer. Pray for those who are sick, may God give them healing. Pray for those who have lost a loved one or has one who is ill, may God give them comfort. Pray for those who are suffering financially because of the crisis, may God give them all they need. Pray for those who are frightened, may God give them courage. Pray for those who are serving others in this crisis, may God give them health and strength. And pray we may soon return to normalcy, May God have mercy on us all. Be Smart, Keep well. Fr. Jeff
While we are obligated to care for the physical life and health of our people, we are also obligated to care for the spiritual life and health of our people. It is an essential aspect of our faith to provide the sacraments. Keeping that in mind we announce the following:
“Bishop Paprocki, out of concern for the physical well-being of the people under his care, is regretfully canceling all Confirmation/First Holy Communion Masses from now until the end of December. Even just canceling two weeks throws the schedule so out of balance that we will have to rethink it completely. Once an “all clear” is given, we will have to discuss how we can reestablish a schedule from that point.” ( this will cancel our Confirmation/First Communion scheduled for our Third Graders in October 2020) There should be no penance services. However, penance should be made available under form 1 of the celebration of the sacrament by making more hours available for individual confessions. We are now recommending that Holy Communion be received in the hand because hot breath can communicate disease. When receiving Holy Communion, a person’s hands should be held completely open and flat to avoid contact with the minister. Fish Fries: All Fish Fries have been CANCELLED.
