Fr. Keith’s Korner Fr. Keith’s Korner Fr. Keith’s Korner Fr. Keith’s Korner Welcome to the sacred season of Lent. This

time of the liturgical year invites us to focus with some extra effort on our spiritual lives. We will be reflecting as a faith community on how the path toward salvation, as preached by Jesus, is often filled with paradox. We are urged, for example, to discover new life through death, to sacrifice so that we can be full, and to find strength by being powerless. In fact, by living out this "salvation paradox" in our daily lives, we slowly begin to understand the message of Jesus more deeply. Please make use of the extra prayer services and prayers booklets we have provided to draw closer to God during this special time of year in preparation for Easter. Thanks so much to our Drexel Ball organizing committee and to everyone who is helping to make this year's ball the best ever. You can purchase tickets (get your friends together for a table) and donate auction items each weekend in the Gathering Space up until Sunday 8 March. I'm pleased to announce that Samantha Nelson is the winner of this year's $1000 college Drexel Essay Contest prize, and that Trey Booth is the winner of the $500 high school Contest prize. Congratulations to both of them and thanks to all the students who participated in the essay contest this year! The annual Drexel Ball honors our patron saint's feast day. Visit our website (www.saintdrexel.org) to download a novena starting this Sunday 22 February to pray for nine days until her feast day on 3 March. This novena is provided to us through Saint Katharine Drexel's National Shrine in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Our Knights of Columbus council recently led a "baby bottle" campaign to raise funds for an ultrasound machine for CareNet here in Frederick. They are so grateful for our parishioner contributions of $4,163-- another example of living our Mission Statement, and "giving selflessly in realization of the Kingdom of God"!

The Season of Lent

“The Salvation Paradox”

Rice Bowls are available at the Information Center for use at home as a family Lenten devotion. Having one simple meal a week at home, praying about those who experience hunger around the world on a regular basis can help your

family experience this special season. Donations support the work of Catholic Relief Services.

Two Lenten Prayer Booklets are available in the entrance hallway (one for personal prayer and one for family activities). Please note the booklet "It's All About Love" is dated 2014. That is a misprint - the book is for Lent 2015.

Lenten Fridays will be observed at Saint Katharine Drexel with a simple meal of soup and bread (you bring the bread, we provide the soup) at 6:15 PM followed by various Lenten prayer experiences at 7:00 PM. This is a great way to make Lent a special time for your family. Check the purple bulletin insert for more information.

FREDERICK COUNTY PARISH TUITION ASSISTANCE FUND

This fund has now been established by eight parishes in southern Frederick County to aid families who wish their children to receive a faith-based elementary or high school education in Frederick County Catholic Schools. Beginning in 2015, a distribution committee composed of representatives of each participating parish (rather than the individual parishes themselves), will be determining the awards on the basis of financial need. The distribution committee uses the FACTS Grant &

Aid Assessment to conduct financial need evaluations. Families should apply through FACTS as in years past, making sure to indicate the school your child will attend, and the parish to which you

belong. We are grateful to the many parishioners in southern Frederick County who make a monthly offering for Catholic School Education to support this fund and assist young families desiring a faith-based education for their children. Go to online.factsmgt.com to set up your account and begin. There is a $28 processing fee for this service. The deadline to file is 31 March 2015. If you have questions, call 866-441-4637. 27 February Stations of the Cross with Mary—then and now Contemplate the Passion by praying the Stations with Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Recall the

ways in which Mary’s “yes” - her surrender to God’s will—mirrors Jesus’ “yes” to ultimately de-stroy the power of sin and death.

6 March Eucharistic Exposition & the Rosary We gather for an evening of quiet prayer and music before the Blessed Sacrament, and prayer-

fully contemplate the Passion of Jesus through the scriptural Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary.

Abstinence (refraining from meat) is required for all Catholics 14 years and older on all the Fridays of Lent.

This liturgical season begins with Ash Wednesday and continues until Holy Thursday when the Sacred Triduum begins.

The mystery of faith that we proclaim in song at each Mass contains a statement that seems odd at first glance:

through the death of Jesus, we find new life. This is a paradox, a "proposition seemingly self-contradictory, and

yet explicable as expressing a truth" (American College Dictionary). Jesus taught that in becoming obedient, we

would discover true freedom... that in being powerless, we could know real strength... and that through

sacrificing, abundance would be ours. This is the path toward salvation. Our weekly parish Lenten services

and activities are listed below to assist you and your family understand more fully and live more deeply this

mystery of faith-- this salvation paradox.

TUITION ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE Saint Katharine Drexel parishioners are invited to apply for Catholic School tuition assistance for the upcoming 2015–2016 academic year. Tuition grants for our parishioners are now distributed through the Frederick County Parish Tuition Assistance Fund, which has been established by eight cooperating parishes in southern Frederick County. The monthly offering for Catholic School Education goes directly into this fund to assist qualifying families. To be considered for a grant:

• Your child(ren) must be enrolled in a Frederick County Catholic School (elementary or high school) that has Archdiocesan recognition. Tuition assistance payments are made directly to the schools.

The distribution committee uses the FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment to conduct financial need evaluations. The application process is fair and confidential. There is a processing fee of $28 for this service. If you are interested in applying for a tuition assistance grant for the 2015-2016 Academic year, please use the FACTS online financial aid application:

• Go to online.factsmgt.com to set up your account and begin; or login with your existing credentials if you already have an account;

• Be sure to designate both a school and your parish of registration;

• If you have any questions about the process, please call FACTS at 866-441-4637. Other questions may be directed to our parish business manager, Michael O’Connor, at 301-360-9581, extension 2274, or [email protected]. The deadline for filing applications is 31 March.
