Fr. Keith’s KornerFr. Keith’s KornerFr. Keith’s KornerFr. Keith’s Korner This weekend we are graced with visiting

presiders while I join my priest friends at the Cape Cod beach. On Saturday night, we welcome Fr. Al Smith (who is retired and lives in Hagerstown), and on Sunday morning Fr. Gil Seitz, who is the Judicial Vicar for the Archdiocese. I asked Fr. Gil what he actually does, and he explained that he works in the Marriage Tribunal, on the laicization process for priests, and also investigating possible cures as miracles for "saints-to-be". The four signs posted around the periphery of our parish property announce to the public that we are seeking final site plan approval for our new church construction project from the City of Frederick. This process will include input from the public at a Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) meeting, and a presentation on our project at the Planning Commission. This is a necessary approval needed to proceed with our new church, and so it is great to see the signs posted! Members of our youth ministry are leaving this Sunday to participate in “Encounter the Gospel of Life” in Washington DC. They join hundreds of other teens to volunteer at social service agencies during the day, and reflect and pray together about their experiences in the evening. We are so grateful to the adult and young adult leaders who accompany our teens for this experience. Please keep them in your prayers this week. It takes a lot to organize various faith formation programs each year, including recruiting catechists and ordering materials. We always try to encourage early registration to assist our staff in this process of planning for the new academic year. The household registration fee increases each month during the summer to encourage this early registration. Please be aware that the fee increases again after this weekend and assist our staff (and yourself) by registering as soon as possible, using forms on our website and at the Information Center.

The 50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: A Parish Celebration © 2013 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications. Orders: 1-800-933-1800. Written by Corinna Laughlin. Text from the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy © 1982, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation (ICEL). Imprimatur granted by the Reverend Monsignor John F. Canary, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Chicago on June 5, 2013.

“The sacraments . . . nourish, strengthen, and

express [faith]” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 59)

T he sacraments of the Church confer grace through words

and visible signs. They “bear fruit in those who receive them with

the required dispositions” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1131). But there is more. The sacraments also “nourish, strengthen, and express” faith. In other words, the way the sacrament is celebrated — the words, prayers, and ritual gestures — have a power to teach us, and to change us, in a way no explanation ever could. That is why the Sacrament of Baptism can take place in the midst of the Sunday Mass. The elements of the rite — the renunciation of sin and the profession of faith, the pouring of water, the white garment, the lighted candle, and the anointing with sacred Chrism — speak so powerfully of what Baptism is about, and reignite in all present the desire to live the Baptism we have received, and to share with others the faith we profess.

“The catechumenate for adults . . . well-suited

instruction, may be sancti-fied by sacred rites”

(Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 64)

In the early Church, there was a clear path for those who wished to become Christian: Over a period of several years,

they would listen to instruction, join the community for prayer, and receive special blessings and exorcisms, culminat-ing in their initiation at the Easter Vigil. In 1955, Pope Pius XII restored the Holy Week liturgies, bringing adult Baptisms back to the Easter Vigil. And a few years later, the Council Fathers called for the restoration of the catechumenate, the ancient process of preparation for Baptism. Today, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) provides a rich array of prayers and rites, through which catechumens, as well as already baptized candidates for full communion, feel sur-rounded by the prayer of the Church from the very beginning of their journey. And, the RCIA allows those in the assembly to experience the joy that comes with the continued spreading of the Good News of Jesus Christ.
