Pastor’s Pen: Year of Mercy

I was among the million or so people who descended on Philadelphia in September to attend the World Meeting of Families and Pope Francisʼ visit to the US. Two buses carrying 110 pilgrims traveled from Green Bay with Bishop Ricken, and we weren't disappointed! We were able to celebrate Mass at several beautiful Shrines, and were especially blessed to have St. Gianna Molla’s daughter address our group and share the story of her “Saint Mom,” followed by a visit to a shrine devoted to St. Gianna. Initially focused on the arrival of the Pope, we were really blessed to attend sessions of the World Meeting of Families beforehand. The talk that most people ranked best was given by Cd Tagle from the Philippines, titled “The Family; A Home for the Wounded Heart.” He defined home as the gift of a loving presence, and beautifully unwrapped that for us - it's well worth watching at http://www.worldmeeting2015.org/the-latest/congressvideos/ - (scroll down to the 12th video). Did I get up close to the Pope? No - but the experience of being among so many people, with so much kindness and generosity shown, all with the eager desire to be a part of something very special, more than made the trip worth while. The reverence of such a huge crowd at the celebration of the Mass was extraordinary, with all eyes focused on the Jumbotrons while actively participating in the Mass. Pope Francis said we hadn't come to see him - we came to be with Jesus, and indeed He was the true focus of all the events. The whole experience was like a giant family reunion, where everyone got along with each other, and we met and were reunited with distant cousins. You could talk to anyone, and we happily met people from all over the world. I came home with a deeper gratitude for being Catholic, and being a part of something so much bigger than I had imagined. Even as we experienced the Koinonia retreat here at Sacred Heart a few weeks ago, meeting people from all around the diocese and beyond, and becoming Christian community, so the trip to Philly was like a mega experience of Catholic Christian community. It gave us a glimpse of what it can be like to be united in Christ - truly a sign of Hope. We continue to pray for Pope Francis as he brings the living presence of Christ to all people around the world.

Pope Francis has declared a Year of Mercy beginning December 8. He wants the “Holy Year to be for all believers a true moment of encounter with the mercy of God.” And he adds “It is indeed my wish that the Jubilee be a living experience of the closeness of the Father, whose tenderness is almost tangible, so that the faith of every believer may be strengthened and thus testimony to it be ever more effective.”

With this Year of Mercy in mind, our pastoral council and staff have proposed the following parish goals as our course of action through June:

1. Grow Closer to the Mercy of God Live the Year of Mercy with monthly holy hours and daily family prayer Explain and provide information on living the Mass Pray for and promote young adult ministry and classes for those wishing to enter the Church

2. Celebrate Family Life Be more welcoming and family friendly at all Masses Keep improving monthly Parish Family Nights Support family life and encourage Households of Faith

3. Prepare for Our 150th Anniversary in 2017 Update our parish membership information Begin work on a new picture directory of families Plan ways to celebrate our anniversary

These goals profess our faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and the Mercy of God. They are three ways among many possibilities

to follow Christ more closely. Please pray about how you and your family and friends may become a bigger part of the Body of Christ.

Shawano Area Matthew 25 (SAM 25) is in need of your support, help and prayers, please!

Jesus states in Matthew 25:40 that "whatever you do for my people you do for me". SAM 25 is opening a seasonal Emergency Shelter (SAM's House) on Sunday, November 15 and needs your help, please! Local opportunities for you to Live a Year of Mercy

Care Ministry is a one-on-one lay pastoral care giving program that can respond to a wide variety of parish needs. Care ministry provides supportive care to those who are ill, hospitalized, in residential facilities, grieving, isolated or facing other difficult and challenging life situations. We are a people called by God and empowered by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus. Our mission is to respond through a listening presence to the needs of others as a continuation of Jesus’ ministry of healing. Care Ministers bring the Good News that nothing can

separate us from the love of God through Jesus

Christ. A team of parishioners has been trained to carry out these duties. If you are interested in our next training session please contact Linda at the Parish

Center at 715-526-2023.

ORPHAN GRAIN TRAIN St. James Church collects donations from the local area to send to Third World Countries. They sort and box once a month at St. James Church. Last week four members from Sacred Heart assisted them in sorting clothing left from the rummage sale. If this is something you would like to volunteer to do please contact Wilbur Kleinschmidt at 715-526-6292.

Anyone requesting prayer may call 715-584-1756, or if no answer 715-526-5514. First names only will be used and Prayer Chain members promise to respect your request in confidence. Anyone wishing to join the Prayer Chain may also call the above numbers. What a great opportunity to pray for the living and the dead.

What’s new in Admissions & Development?

Sacred Heart Catholic School enrolled 31 NEW

students this school year.

Our school had a nearly 90% retention rate from last year to this school year, which is within national norms.

The Parish-hosted, ‘City Wide Halloween Party’ that took place on October 28, 2015 was a huge success and served 325 students and their families! Approximately 100 of those students were preschool aged children and visited the specially designed Preschool-Kindergarten Corner.

The Parish Facebook page has become a great tool for over 120 parishioners and friends of the parish to communicate and share their faith.

Family Nights Susan Kurek, DRE

For the second year, Religious Education has been celebrating Family Nights once each month. The evening starts with a potluck at 5:30 pm and continues with a program at 6:30 pm. Often, parents and children have separate activities; the parents enjoy a speaker while the students have their

Safe Environment lesson or work on a project together.

This year has already been filled with great speakers and programs. We invited our October speaker back this year, since so many people enjoyed his presentation on Islam last year. This year, Dr. Brian Smith, from Ripon College, spoke with parents and the high school students on Mercy in the Gospels and the Year of

Mercy and was once again well-received. Meanwhile, the younger students participated in their annual Safe Environment lesson.

November brought a special program to Family Night: Native American Cultural Heritage. Jeremy Mohawk, a Stockbridge-Munsee Tribal Council member, brought his family and some friends to demonstrate special dances with drumming and singing. Also dancing were some of our Sacred Heart Catholic School children: Sasan Shawanokasic and Sydney Mitchell. Sasan is the current Menominee Junior Miss and Sydney, who is Chippewa-Cree-Menominee, is at the beginning of her dancing career in second grade. Jeremy told the Munsee version of the creation story. Listening to the story, I could not help but see many similarities to our Christian version. It made me think how God put many different people on this earth and how we have many different paths to come to him, but we are all his precious creation and we all belong to him. For the final dance, all of us were invited to come into the circle to dance. This program was preceded by a wonderfully delicious supper of Indian tacos and brownies all cooked by Tanya Myerchin, our school’s food service manager. The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Green Bay awarded our parish a grant to be able to provide this program.

December’s program will be less active, but no less entertaining. Speaking to the parents will be Julianne Stanz, Director of New Evangelization for the Diocese of Green Bay. Her topic is The Five Habits of Happy, Healthy, and Holy Families. Julianne was raised in Ireland and is a delightful speaker. While the parents are enjoying Julianne’s presentation, the high school students will be tying blankets for SAM 25 and the younger students will be working on a special project for some of our parishioners who might need some Christmas cheer.

32nd Annual Halloween Party a Success! This year’s party took place on October 28 and was

enjoyed by 335 children, a 10% increase over last year! Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who

coordinated the event, made games, or donated time and candy!

First Annual Raking Day Serves 14 Homes Students in grades 4K-8 from Sacred Heart Catholic School spent Tuesday, October 27 raking leaves in the Shawano community. Working in four teams, students were able to rake a total of 14 yards! The 14th yard was special in that the older students stepped up to help a stranger they saw struggling to rake on her own. The service event was organized by parishioner, Jeanne Kaczorowski, and was funded by a Thrivent Financial Action Team.

Albright Preschool Classroom Dedication– Bill Albright and Julie Erickson-Albright, children of Dr. John and Sue Albright, were

on hand September 14, 2015 for the dedication of the 4K classroom.

Father Luke blessed the classroom, and the students presented the

Albrights with a special poster of appreciation. The Albright Family

donated the money used to enhance the 4K classroom.

Vocations Awareness and Appreciation

Sacred Heart Catholic School would like to thank Sacred Heart parishioners, Sandie Lyman and Toni Knope for sharing their beautiful seamstress skills as they created and donated these Holy costumes for our preschool classroom. The school purposefully appealed for assistance in creating these faith-filled garments to accompany the secular costumes already purchased. Our mission is to in part, ‘ensure the optimum academic, spiritual, physical and social growth of

every student,’ and so by allowing our students to ’play’ dress up in these Holy garments we are giving them every opportunity to truly hear God’s calling and to appreciate those already

called to a Holy order.

Ben Johnson

† Ben is a fourth year seminarian for the Diocese of Green Bay. † It’s difficult to name his “job title” here, so he’s called our “resident seminarian,” and “Mr. Ben,” by the children.

† His duties here at Sacred Heart include; Morning, recess, and bus duties every day, Technology support for the school and parish, 1st grade religion, 4th and 9th grade RE on Wednesdays, odds and ends jobs,

† Ben earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota (Spr. 2015).

† He’s 22 years old & has five sisters. † His home is in Oshkosh. † Ben graduated as one of two valedictorians from

Lourdes Academy in Oshkosh (Spring of 2011). † He initially studied BioMolecular Engineering at

Milwaukee School of Engineering before transferring and becoming a seminarian.

† Interests: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, technology, coffee, philosophy, contemplation, and video games (everything from MarioKart and Pokemon to Call of Duty and Fallout).

When you see Mr. Ben, as the children call him, please say hello and introduce yourself. We are so very fortunate to

Saint John Paul II tells us, "The worship given to the Trinity of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...must fill our churches also outside the timetable of Masses... This worship must be prominent in all our encounters with the Blessed Sacrament... Adoration of Christ in this sacrament of love must also find expression in various forms of Eucharistic devotion: personal prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, hours of adoration, periods of exposition, Eucharistic benediction, Eucharistic processions... Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in adoration and in contemplation that is full of faith and ready to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the

world. May our adoration never cease." Come then, in answer to this holy invitation, every third Friday of the month at Sacred Heart Church

from 9:00AM until 4:00PM. There is an additional opportunity requested by our Bishop Ricken to be present on the first Wednesday of each month to join many members of the parish in Adoration for a Holy Hour beginning at 6:30PM May we all joyfully respond!
