From the rabbi’s DeskI was reminded this week of one of the many lessons I learned from my father as a child that has stuck with me throughout my life. When mincha ended on yom tov afternoon at Shul and a short Dvar Torah would fill the time until we could daven ma’ariv, invariably the same thing would happen - most of the room would clear out. My father would often remark to me afterwards that there is a big difference between not going to a Shiur, and choosing to walk out of one that is being offered in the place you currently find yourself.

The principle my father shared is not limited to learning opportunities, but in fact can be applied to most virtuous things in life. Even if we would never initiate a particular noble act or activity, would we go so far as to turn it down or walk out on it when it presents itself to us?

Perhaps the greatest expression of this distinction is in our attitude towards chessed. We are blessed to live in a community that performs chessed in ways I have never seen before. Our incredible chessed infrastructure comprised of the anonymous people who do the ‘little’ things behind the scenes are truly remarkable and extraordinary. But we, like every other community, nevertheless still struggle to expand the list we can turn to when a meal needs to be cooked, a ride needs to take place, hospitality needs to be offered, or a Shiva minyan needs to be made.

Recently, a member of our community was sitting shiva and a few of the scheduled minyanim fell short of the requisite quorum. On consecutive days, Rabbi Moskowitz and I came to a minyan scheduled to begin at BRS and asked for volunteers to help complete the minyan at the shiva home. We both received the same response to our initial ask – essentially nothing. It took my reminding everyone that if we can’t get a few people, someone will not be able to say kaddish for their parent, and the next day Rabbi Moskowitz’s threatening not to start the minyan at shul until we have a

minyan at the shiva house, for people to respond. Of course there are legitimate reasons why many couldn’t go, but it is frankly humiliating that in a Shul of hundreds of families and in a minyan of dozens of people, we had to essentially grovel to recruit people to perform this basic chessed.

The very next day, I received an email from a woman who works with a committee to make sure that nobody in our community eats alone on Shabbos. She expressed her shock and disappointment by the limited list of people that have offered their hospitality. Even more troubling to her, was that when she specifically calls, emails or texts individuals directly asking them if they can host someone for the coming Shabbos, almost all say no and many don’t even have the courtesy to get back to her at all.

Chessed, showing selflessness in helping others, is a fundamental and core value of our people, tradition and sacred Torah. It is a pillar upon which the world leans, no less critical and supportive than Torah and davening. And yet, so many of us struggle with instinctively and intuitively leaving our comfort zones and extending ourselves to help others.

Real chessed is almost by definition inconvenient. Having someone when you are having many guests anyway, visiting someone when you will be at the hospital anyway, hosting families or singles that are your close friends, are all meritorious and admirable, but they shouldn’t be confused with the highest form of chessed. Real chessed is doing what needs to be done, when it needs to be done and for whom it needs to be done, even, and perhaps especially, when it is not convenient and brings no glory.

Many older people take a pass on chessed opportunities, saying that they have put in their time when they were younger and many younger people don’t participate saying that their children’s needs and their personal lives leave them no time to help others. So who is left to do chessed? Does one ever graduate or complete their obligation and duty to extend themselves for others? Would it not be the greatest education we could provide our children to invite them to participate in our acts of chessed for others so that chessed is not taking away from our children, but rather it is enhancing and enriching them?

Many are not predisposed to seeking out chessed opportunities and looking for ways to help others, and perhaps that is even understandable. What is not understandable, however, is not answering when an opportunity presents itself to us directly.

Even if you don’t seek out or look for chessed, I beg you not to look away when chessed seeks you out. If it was us, God forbid, needing a minyan for shiva, or our family member needing someone to host them for a meal, we would be terribly disappointed if nobody would step up. Next time, when asked to do a chessed, please step up and save someone else that same disappointment.

    Shabbat Shalom,

    Inconvenient”

BRS OuTReACH RevOluTIONA Night of iNspirAtioN revisitedIt’s hard to believe that the big night is finally over. For those who attended “A Night of Inspiration” this past Sunday night, it was a very special evening for me and my family. It was a great feeling to officially launch the new independent Jewish outreach organization known as the Boca Raton Jewish Experience or the BRJE. If you were in attendance, please make sure to tell all of your friends about the video and mission/accom-plishments of the BRJE so far. I have to thank Asher Essebag of the band Pardes, a dear friend and member of BRS, for an incredible concert. We were able to actually transform what looked like a regular room into a massive concert hall with a giant stage and incredible sound and lighting systems. I also want to thank my wife Simone and Paula Robbins for introducing the evening to everyone, You both helped to make it a memorable

event. It was a dream come true and I can’t wait for all of you to celebrate along with us again at “A Night of Inspiration II” on February 11, 2013. So please mark your calendars and save the date.As we get closer to Pesach, I hope that you are considering sharing your Seder with a friend that doesn’t normally observe the Passover Holiday. You are already setting an extra seat for Eliyahu; just add another spot and show them what an incredible Passover really looks like.Inspire yourself to inspire others…Josh

noted the general prohibition of doing work on Shabbat?4. What was unusual about the way the women spun the goat’s hair?5. Why were the Nesi’im last to contribute to the building of the Mishkan? How does the Torah show

dissatisfaction with their actions?6. For what was the woven goat’s hair used?7. Why does the Torah attribute the building of the Aron to Bezalel?8. How many lamps did the Menorah have?9. How did the Kiyor promote peace?10. The Kiyor was made from the mirrors of the women who were crowding at the entrance to the Ohel Mo’ed.

Why were the women crowding there?

    pARSHA Q & A

Questions and Answers are courtesy of Ohr Somayach.

vAyAkHeldetails of the Mishkan /the Shabbat. Moshe transmitted to B’nei Yisrael the details of Hashem’s commands relating to the Sanctuary and its contents, but first emphasized the holiness of the Shabbat.

Contributions for the Sanctuary. When asked to contribute towards the construction fund for the Sanctuary, B’nei Yisrael responded most generously, each individual donating what he or she could.

Betzalel and Oholiav. Moshe made specific mention of the fact that Hashem had singled out Betzalel of the tribe of Yehudah, a man of wisdom, understanding, and experience, to supervise the details of the construction. He was aided by Oholiav of the tribe of Dan, who was a talented engraver and weaver.

donations for the Sanctuary/Building of the Sanctuary. The gifts for the building of the Sanctuary became so plentiful that the workers were able to report that they had more materials than they needed. The people were then asked to refrain from donating additional items.

pekuDeIConstruction of the Mishkan. At Moshe’s command, the total cost of the Sanctuary construction was computed. The work was approved and inspected by Moshe, who blessed the people for their assistance in this magnificent achievement. On the first day of the month of Nissan, almost a year after the Jews’ departure from Egypt, the Mishkan was erected under Moshe’s personal supervision and its contents were arranged in the prescribed order. A cloud covered the Mishkan, which was suffused with Hashem’s Glory. Whenever the cloud lifted, it signaled Hashem’s desire that the Jews continue their journey.

HAlACHIk QueSTION OF THe WeekQ: Is the BRS logo, which contains the expression “K’Ish Echad B’Lev Echad,” considered Sheimot? Can one bring paper containing the logo in the bathroom? Can one step on a floor mat that contains the logo?

A: When a portion of a verse is used as an expression and not as a quote, it does not have the status of Sheimot. For example, many Poskim permit one to throw out a wedding invitation that contains the expression “Od Yishama, etc.” The expression in the BRS logo is based on a Midrash, not a verse, and so there is even greater room to permit treating the logo as having no sacred status. It is, therefore, permissible to carry paper with the logo into the bathroom or step on a mat containing the logo. (Shevet Ha’levi 7:167, Ginzei Hakodesh 9:14)

Please submit your question of the week on any topic to Rabbi Goldberg at [email protected]

Vayakhel1. 35:1 - The day after Yom Kippur.2. 35:2 - To emphasize that the building of the Mishkan doesn’t supersede the laws of Shabbat.3. 35:3 - There are two opinions: One opinion is to teach that igniting a fire on Shabbat is punishable by lashes

as opposed to other “Melachot” which are punishable by death. The other opinion is to teach that violation of numerous “Melachot” at one time requires a separate atonement for each violation.

    4. 35:26 - It was spun directly from off the backs of the goats.5. 35:27 - The Nesi’im reasoned that they would first let the people contribute materials needed for the Mishkan

and then they would contribute what was lacking. The Torah shows its dissatisfaction by deleting a letter from their title.

    6. 36:14 - It was made into curtains to be draped over the Mishkan7. 37:1 - Because he dedicated himself to its building more than anyone else.8. 37:23 - Seven.9. 38:8 - Its waters helped a woman accused of adultery to prove her innocence.10. 38:8 - To donate to the Mishkan.

Pekudei1. 38:21 - To allude to the Beit Hamikdash that would twice be taken as a “Mashkon” (pledge) for the sins of the

Jewish People until the nation repents.2. 38:21 - It was testimony for the Jewish People that G-d forgave them for the golden calf and allowed His

Shechina to dwell among them.3. 38:21 - The levi’im. 4. 38:26 - 603,550. Every man age twenty and over (except the levi’im).5. 39:6, 39:7 - The names of the tribes.6. 39:33 - He stood it up.7. 40:17 - Rosh Chodesh Nissan of the second year in the desert. For seven days before this, during the consecra-

tion of Aharon and his sons, Moshe erected and dismantled the Mishkan. (Rashi 39:29)8. 40:21 - It served as a partition for the Aron.9. 40:24 - On the southern side of the Ohel Mo’ed opposite the Shulchan. 10. 40:31 - On the eighth day of the consecration of the Mishkan.

Three years ago, Boca Raton Synagogue  launched the Pillar Society for those members that wish to help our synagogue continue to offer the highest possible level of educational, religious, and social programming to our community.  This year we have added a Silver level for members ages 36 and under.

We are fortunate in our community to have a number of members who give above and beyond, year after year.  We thank you for your past generosity and appeal to you and others to become members of Pillar Society – to be the leaders of Torah,  Avodah, and Gemilut Chasadim in our community.

Pillar Society provides a backbone to our community, and your commitment enables the Shul to provide for the needs of all our members, regardless of ability to pay. May you and your family be truly blessed in the coming year.

INTeReSTING FACTS ABOuT eReTz yISRAelBeit She’an is one of the oldest cities in the world. A cemetery of Cananites was found there recently. Although Beit She’an was never really settled during the times that Yehoshua came and conquered the land, the Plishtim hung Shmuel’s

body in Beit She’an. On a happier note, during King Dovid’s and his son Shlomo’s rule, Jews lived in Beit She’an. Between the times of Shlomo and the State of Israel, Beit She’an was more popular with Non-Jews, like the Romans, Greeks and crusaders, than with Jews. Today, the city is almost 100% Jewish, with over 17,000 people living there. Beit She’an is north of Yerushalayim along the Jordan River.

TeeNS SuppORT ISRAel As part of South Florida’s teenagers continued efforts to support Israel in these troubling times, our teens joined Southern NCSY this Thursday night and showed their support for Israel at the Young Israel of Hollywood.

Teens learned more about what’s happening in Israel now from Rabbi Uri Pilichowski. Rabbi Pilichowski spoke about just how serious the time we live in is now. He addressed the day after scenario, which is the question of what happens the day after a military confrontation happens with Iran. While most start the question with what happens the day after an Israeli, American of joint American-Israeli preemptive strike against Iran, Rabbi Pilichowski started the question with what would happen if Iran struck first, and then moved to other scenarios. In stressing the seriousness of the times, Rabbi Pilichowski emphasized the need for strong prayer and political involvement.

At the end of the evening, the teens enjoyed a falafel station and got a free NCSY stands with Israel t-shirt. Big kudos to Todd Cohn, Rabbi Ben Gonsher, Karen Steinberg, and the entire NCSY team for a great evening.

In addition, our teens joined AIPAC’s national action alert and urged Members of Congress to Co-sponsor Resolutions Calling for the Prevention of a Nuclear-Capable Iran. As Iran’s nuclear weapons program continues to advance, bipartisan resolutions have been introduced in the Senate and the House affirming that it is a vital interest of the United States to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability. The resolutions call for all options to remain on the table with the exception of containing a nuclear armed Iran. Our teens called members of Congress and the Senate and urged them to call members of Congress and sign on to the resolutions.

Students mentioned that President Obama has stated that it is U.S. policy to prevent, not contain, an Iran with nuclear weapons. The leading republican candidates have also stated that prevention, and not containment, should be U.S. policy. Iran has nearly achieved a nuclear weapons capability. Tehran continues to defy all international demands that it suspend nuclear enrichment and return to the negotiating table.

TeeN mINyAN SuRvIveS NO CHOleNTOur teens survived a harrowing experience last week, yet had the strength to carry on and continue. At the end of teen Minyan each week, the Minyan enjoys a hot Kiddush, including Cholent. Unfortunately, last week the Cholent simply didn’t happen. There was nothing to do, as even one potato wasn’t salvageable. Facing an incredible test of faith and fortitude, the teens regrouped, and with shouts of “Chazak V’amatz!” steeled themselves for holding out to eat until lunch. Thankfully, everyone was able to pull themselves together, and with the help of special counselors from the Life Without Cholent Emergency Counseling Center were able to recognize that Shabbat was only seven days away, and that they could wait until the next week for Cholent. If you’re interested in sponsoring Cholent for teens, and avoiding tragedies like this in the future, please contact Rabbi Pilichowski at [email protected]

SOCIAl ACTIONRockets continue to be fired into Israel from Gaza despite the “would be” ceasefire brokered by Egypt. During the past week, a million Israelis were forced to take refuge in shelters. No Government can tolerate such acts against innocent civilians, particularly defenseless children. Hamas is funded and supported by Iran. This continuing export of terror is yet another reason why a nuclear Iran is unacceptable, not just for

Israel, but for the entire region and the world at large. Write or call your Senators, Congressman, the President, and the Secretary of State to insist that they condemn the actions of Hamas against innocent civilians. Contact information can be found in the social action committee stacks in the BRS lobby.
