Thank you for picking up our part-time course guide for Spring/Summer 2010. We hope you find a course you want to study with us.

As the country battles through the worst recession in memory, it has never been more important to have relevant qualifications. Now is the perfect time to focus on learning new skills and gaining new qualifications. We are confident that, like the thousands of learners who have studied with us, you also could reap the rewards from the time, commitment and cost involved in studying part-time.

OCVC is proud to be the foremost provider of work-related courses in Oxfordshire and our experienced staff are working with hundreds of local employers to train their staff either in the workplace or on one of our four college sites. With over 1,000 courses starting all year round, including day, evening and distance learning courses, we have the right option to suit you. Whatever your commitments away from college, OCVC can offer a flexible solution to help you combine your studies with your day-to-day life.

Convenient location OCVC is your local college. Our four campuses are easy to find and have very good public transport links. Some courses also take place in community locations and in the workplace. For maps and directions see pages 54 and 55.

Support to succeed OCVC staff are here to support you at every step. We understand that getting started on a college course can sometimes be difficult, so we have planned a number of ways to support you to get on in learning. See page 9.

8.FacilitiesOur campuses have industry standard facilities and offer cafes, coffee shops and library facilities which are open in the evening. There is parking at each campus after 5pm although it is advised to take public transport if at all possible.

How to enrol

In person

Please visit the reception at any of our four campuses - Oxford, Banbury, Blackbird Leys or Bicester. See pages 54 and 55 for maps and directions.

By postPostal enrolments should be posted no later than 10 working days before the start of the course. To request an enrolment form by post, please call customer services on 01865 550550 or email [email protected] giving your full name, address and postcode.

Please call customer services on 01865 550550 8.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 4.30pm on Fridays.

Please have ready the details of your chosen course and your debit/credit card details. Please note that if you are eligible for a concessionary fee, you will need to enrol in person, providing proof of your benefits.

OnlineSome of our courses have online enrolment. These are identified by ‘online’ in the course information grid. To enrol simply visit our website and find the course using the search box. Once you are on the course details page, click on the button to enrol. You will need to provide some basic details and pay using a credit or debit card. On completion a receipt will be emailed to you.

Please note: All courses will run subject to sufficient demand. We therefore strongly recommend that you book your place as soon as possible. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If we are unable to run a course due to insufficient numbers, we will let you know as soon as possible. Please ensure you are fully aware of any fees due.

Making payments

You will not be able to start your course until you have enrolled and paid the relevant fee. All course fees must be paid at the time of enrolment unless your fees are paid by instalments or by your employer. Fees can be paid by cash, cheque, Switch/Delta card, Access, MasterCard and Visa credit cards. Payment can be by direct debit instalments if the fees are above £150 and the course lasts at least 12 weeks.

RefundsIn the unlikely event that we cancel your course, we will refund your fees. We do not refund fees if you choose to leave the course before completion. A copy of the refund policy is available on request.

There are different categories of fees depending on your age and situation.

16-18 fees16-18 year olds do not pay for tuition on any course funded by the Learning and Skills Council. Any fee shown is to cover the cost of materials*.

19+These fees include tuition and materials.

19+ concessionary feesTuition on courses funded by the Learning and Skills Council is free if you are on one of the benefits listed below. You will also qualify for free tuition on these courses if you are not working and financially dependent on someone claiming one of these benefits.

• Job Seeker’s Allowance

• Council Tax Benefits (excluding single resident discount)

• Housing Benefits

• Income Support

• The ‘Guarantee Credit’ element of Pension Credit

• Working Tax Credit (if your household income is under £15,276 a year)

• Employment and Support Allowance where income based

• Asylum seeker in receipt of the equivalent of income based state benefit.

We will ask to see current, original documents as evidence of your benefits. You will need to inform the college of any change to your circumstances that affect your reduced fees.

Any fee shown on these funded courses is to cover the cost of materials*.

*We may be able to help you with the cost of materials through our Discretionary Fund. It is advisable to apply for this funding without delay in case you need confirmation of this support before you enrol. See page 9 for details of the Discretionary Fund.

We advise students to confirm that their course will start before buying equipment.

International StudentsIf you are an international student, please contact us for details of the fees that apply in your case.

All fees given in this booklet are for this academic year of study only. Additional fees may be charged for future years of study.

Other ways to lower the cost of learning

Free coursesBrush up your English or maths skills on a free literacy or numeracy course. We offer a range of study options to suit you. Courses take place on our college campuses and in the community. See page 38.

Level 2 or Level 3 Entitlement You will not have to pay tuition fees if you are:

• counted as a ‘home’ student for fee purposes. This means you are a UK national, have been granted indefinite leave to remain, have refugee status or are from an EU or EEA country and have been resident in the UK for three years, and

• over 19 and studying for your first full Level 2 qualification such as GCSEs, NVQ2, City & Guild Level 2, or

• 19-25 and studying for your first full Level 3 qualification such as A levels, National Diplomas, NVQ3.

Full-time courses count as full qualifications. Part-time courses listed here could count towards a full qualification, depending on the level. For more information please contact customer services on 01865 550550 or email [email protected].

Learn while you work If you are in work and you do not yet have the qualification needed for your job, we can work with your employer to train you. This may be an NVQ qualification which you can gain in the workplace or you may be able to join an apprenticeship scheme. Many of the on the job training options are free, depending on your age, your previous qualifications and the level of the course you take.

‘Get that Job’ programmeIf you are unemployed, or if you are facing redundancy, you could join our free ‘Get that Job’ programme. This programme has helped many local people learn new skills and get back into the job market. See page 10 for our ‘Get that Job’ programme.

Information, Advice, Guidance

Our customer service advisers are waiting to give you the course information you need to decide which course is right for you. A team of trained careers advisers will support you with your career decisions, before, during and at the end of your course. You will also be able to use the college open access careers libraries on our Oxford and Banbury campuses.

Financial Help We are very happy to help you apply for any financial support you are entitled to. For information on any of the schemes below, please speak with a customer service adviser or directly with the student support team.

Discretionary FundIf you are on a low income, you can apply for help with essential costs for the course. You will qualify if you are living in a household with a combined income of less than £25,000 a year, or £17,000 if you are living alone.

Free ChildcareIf you are 20 or over, you could get help with childcare costs. National schemes include the Sixth Form College Childcare Scheme or the Free Childcare for Training and Learning for Work. We may also be able to help you with childcare costs with our Discretionary Fund.

Adult Learning GrantIf you decide to study full-time Adult Learning Grant (ALG) could help. This is a support scheme for people over 19 on their first full Level 2 or full Level 3 course. You need to be on a full-time course and you could be entitled to up to £30 per week if you attend regularly.

Career Development LoansA Career Development Loan (CDL) is a deferred repayment bank loan. You can use this loan to pay your course fees and other course-related costs. For more information call the CDL helpline on 0800 585 505 or visit www.direct.gov.uk.

Personal Support Our qualified counsellors are here to give you free, confidential help with any personal or emotional issues that are stopping you make the most of your course.

NVQs - Apprenticeships - Distance Learning

Many of the courses listed in this prospectus are ideal to help you develop your career. In a difficult jobs market, being able to offer employers additional skills and qualifications will help you stand out from the crowd.

Did you know that OCVC, delivered training to nearly 3,000 people within their workplace last year? The majority of these learners, even had their tuition fees fully funded.

Did you also know that OCVC has achieved the nationally recognised Training Quality Standard certification? This kite mark

demonstrates the very high standard of work with employers and those wishing to learn whilst in employment. OCVC is currently the only provider in Oxfordshire to have achieved this certification.

If you are in work and lack the necessary qualifications, your employer may be eligible to claim government funding for your training through schemes such as Train to Gain or Apprenticeships.

Drawing and Painting for BeginnersDevelop your skills in drawing and painting from still life with guidance, tuition and demonstrations from one of our skilled tutors. Please bring a sketch pad and pencils to the first session and we will advise you about appropriate additional materials as the course progresses. Ideal for beginners but if you have the basics you will acquire more advanced skills and techniques. Pottery and Ceramics

PotteryFor beginners and more experienced potters alike. Join any class to develop new skills and produce fine ceramics. Your completed work will require time to dry, be fired and glazed during the course, so make allowances for this in the work you plan. You will work with experienced pottery tutors who are experts in their field. They will support you in developing your skills and creativity.

Each course consists of an induction session plus up to two open workshop sessions where you can study at your own pace with tutor support. ESOL English for Speakers of Other LanguagesThese courses are for people who live in the UK and want to improve their English. They run throughout the year and are aimed at students aged 16 and over. Your teachers will prepare you for the Trinity ESOL Skills for Life exams. All courses cover Citizenship, Life in the UK, Study Skills, Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing skills.

From Banbury train stationOn leaving the station head up past the taxi rank to Bridge Street, turn left down to the crossroads. Cross the main road and continue along past Castle Quay shopping centre on the right and through the pedestrianised High Street, following the road up to the Banbury Cross roundabout.

Go straight across on to West Bar Street and follow the road round to the right. The college entrance is on your right. Walking time 20 minutes.

From Banbury bus stationOn leaving the station head out alongside the Castle Quay shopping centre and follow directions as given for the train station above.

From Bicester North train stationOn leaving the station turn right on to Buckingham Road and continue until you reach Churchill Road on your right. Follow Churchill Road to the end and turn left into Launton Road. Continue and turn right into Telford Road and then take the first left. The campus is at the far end on the left. Walking time 30 minutes.

By CarApproach from the City ring road to the BMW Works roundabout. This roundabout is easy to recognise because it is at the heart of the BMW Works area. Turn away from the direction of the City (right if travelling anti-clockwise, left if clockwise). Proceed along Garsington Road and Watlington Road, passing through two sets of traffic lights. At the third set opposite Johnson’s Home Centre turn right into Cuddesdon Way, the College is a few hundred yards along this road on the left hand side.

By BusOxford Bus Co. No. 5 & Stagecoach No. 1 both run a regular service. The main city centre stops are in Queen Street, numbered F4 for Oxford Bus Co. and F7 for Stagecoach. The Stagecoach route also stops at the railway station. You need to get off at Balfour Road and walk back up to Blackbird Leys Road (this is the road that the bus has just turned off).

Turn left and continue to the junction with Cuddesdon Way (row of shops on your right). Turn left into Cuddesdon Way and the Blackbird Leys campus is on your right.

From Oxford train stationFollow road signs for the Ice Rink. The college is situated opposite the Ice Rink on Oxpens Road. 10 minutes walk.

From the Carfax Tower in the City centreGo along Queen Street (past M&S on your left). At the end of the road turn left into Castle Street and continue on Norfolk Street to the junction with Thames Street and Oxpens Road. Turn right into Oxpens Road and the main college entrance is directly opposite the Ice Rink.
