Text: Psalm 34:4, 7, 17, 19

Introduction: Psalm 34 – A Psalm Of David

Historical Setting Of Psalm 34: David On The Run Again But Praising GOD!

David, who had shed his blood in order to insure the welfare of his people and to

save its honor, David, the much-praised son-in-law of the king, now had to flee

from his own father-in-law and seek refuge among the enemies of his people,

because there was no safe place for him in the midst of his own nation. Then, in

order to escape death at the hands of the foes among whom he had sought safety,

David had to pretend that he was an imbecile, and he had to deem it his good

fortune that king Achish, thinking him to be a feeble-minded beggar, drove him

away without harming him.1

• I Samuel 21:1 – David Seeks Refuge From Saul At Nob

• I Samuel 21:10 – David Departs From Nob For Fear Of Saul

• I Samuel 21:11 – David Seeks Refuge In Gath Of The Philistines

• I Samuel 21:12 – David Becomes Afraid And Plays The Fool

I. The God Who Delivers Strictly By Means Of Prayer: v.4

• I sought the LORD, – Hebrew verb daras meaning – 1) to seek, 2) to

inquire, and 3) to require.

• and He heard me, – Hebrew verb anah meaning – to more than hear,

to hear and answer, to hear and respond, to hear and reply.

• and delivered me – Hebrew verb nasal meaning – to snatch away, to

take away, to plan and bring about someone’s escape.

• from all – Hebrew particle kol meaning 1) each, 2) every, 3) all, 4)

everything, 5) whole, and 6) the sum total.

3

• my fears – Hebrew noun megurah meaning – haunting apprehensions,

terrors imagined or real, present frights.

II. The Lord Encampeth Round About God Fearers And

Delivereth Them: v.7

• The angel of the LORD – Hebrew noun malak meaning a

messenger, an angel. This term “the angel of the Lord” is a specific reference

to the Lord Jesus’ preincarnate ministry as the primary messenger of the

covenant (Malachi 3:1).

Psalm 34:7 – The angel of the LORD – The Lord Himself will protect His own. See

note on Genesis 16:9.2

Genesis 16:9 – The angel of the LORD – A theophany, a self-manifestation of God.

He here [in Genesis 16:9] speaks as God, identifies Himself with God, and claims

to exercise the prerogatives of God…Because the angel of the LORD ceases to

appear after the incarnation, it is often inferred that the angel in the Old

Testament is a preincarnate appearance of the second person of the Trinity.3

• encampeth – Hebrew verb hanah meaning to pitch one’s tent, to park

oneself, to set up camp. NO ANGELIC DISTANCING WHATSOEVER!

2 Charles Caldwell Ryrie, Ryrie Study Bible (Chicago, IL: Moody Publishers, 1994), p. 854. 3 Ibid., p. 27.

4

• round about – Hebrew preposition sabiyb meaning 1) surrounding, 2)

all around, 3) to surround on every side.

The LORD is said to be our CIRCULAR FIRE WALL strategically positioned round

about His covenant people (Zechariah 2:5). This He is to protect His flock from their

enemies! The natural enemies of sheep were many in the ancient land of Israel.

These dangerous predators were 1) wolves, 2) bears, 3) hyenas, 4) lions, 5)

leopards, 6) jackals and 7) bandits. GOD is our FIRE WALL!

A Sheepcote – A Circular Rock Enclosure To Protect Sheep From Deadly Predators At Night

5

• them that fear Him, – Hebrew adjective yare meaning to reverence,

to respect. To fear God is to believe in and honor God. This is expressed in

our being faithful to His Word and to act as God’s Word so commands.

Fear – Fear is a passion, implanted in nature, that causes a flight from an

approaching evil, either real or imaginary. The fear of God is either filial or servile.

The filial [that which a loving son or daughter owes to their parents] fear of God is

a holy affection or gracious habit wrought in the soul by God (Jeremiah 32:40),

whereby it is inclined and enabled to obey all God’s commandments, even the

most difficult (Genesis 22:12; Ecclesiastes 12:13), and hate and avoid evil

(Nehemiah 5:15; Proverbs 8:13; 16:6)…Fear is put for the whole worship of God in

Psalm 34:11, “I will teach you the fear of the LORD.” I will teach you the true and

principal way of worshipping and serving God with His acceptation, and to your

own salvation.4

• and delivereth them. – Hebrew verb halas meaning – 1) to draw out,

2) to be withdrawn, 3) to be removed, 4) to be taken out, 5) to be raptured.

Not to be raptured OUT OF THIS WORLD like at the second coming of Christ,

but to be raptured OUT OF TROUBLE like the three Hebrews who were

thrown into the fiery furnace!

All Their Troubles: v. 17

to complain loudly, to desperately plead for relief, to call for help, to

911 God, to send God an urgent, lifesaving S.O.S.!

• and the Lord heareth, – Hebrew verb sama meaning to be

heard, to be regarded, to take serious note of someone’s plight.

• and delivereth them – Hebrew verb nasal meaning a

deliverance granted by means of one entity overpowering and

neutralizing or defeating another.

The Angel Of God Neutralizing The Lions (Daniel 6:22, 27)

7

• out of – Hebrew preposition min meaning, out of, away from.

• all – Hebrew particle kol meaning 1) each, 2) every, 3) all, 4)

everything, 5) whole, and 6) the sum total.

St. Paul Shipwrecked (Acts 27:22-25)

Afflictions: v. 19

• Many – Hebrew adjective rab meaning 1) much [quantity], 2) long

disagreeable, terrifying, evil, bad, harmful.
