PATTAYA CITY EXPATS CLUB NEWSLETTER September 2, 2011

This Sunday‟s Meeting Program

When you think of

Bangkok, you don‟t

often think of

vampires (of course,

many of our Thai

friends might think of

ghosts). Our speaker

this Sunday will be

Jim Newport, a man of

many talents. An

Emmy-nominated

Production Designer of

film and television, an

author, and musician (as Jimmy Fame). For us,

he will be speaking as an author of four novels

in his Vampire of Siam series; describing

on the craft of writing a Vampire novel set in

Bangkok and the diminishing divide between

killers and heroes in today's fiction (Dexter,

Twilight, etc. all feature villains as 'stars.').

As a Production Designer, his film and TV

work include Bangkok Dangerous, The Shield

and LOST, as “blues shouter” Jimmy Fame he

performs around the Thailand and is a regular

guest at the Phuket Blues Festival, and as an

author, he has not only written the four novels

in his Vampire of Siam series, but has also

written Tinsel Town (abut Hollywood) and

Chasing Jimi (a rock „n‟ roll period piece).

A graduate of Pratt Institute, he initially applied

his graphic skills to album cover design and

was a free-lance rock „n‟ roll photographer in

the „70‟s and early „80‟s. In 1982 he joined the

legendary British rock group the Animals for

their 20 year reunion world tour. He presently

resides mostly in Phuket. His just released CD,

Wanted Man, was recorded entirely at Phuket‟s

Legend Music Studios.

For more information on the Vampire of Siam

visit website http://www.vampireofsiam.com/

and visit here for his interview about these

novels http://www.simandan.com/?p=1243.

Also, Barry Kenyon, Assistant Information

Officer at Chonburi (Pattaya) Immigration will

be on the veranda from 11:30am to noon to

offer advice on immigration matters – he

requests that you bring your passport so he can

better assist you.

We will have the usual announcements of

upcoming events in and around Pattaya,

updates on club activities, and last, but not the

least, there will be an Open Forum, which is the

time for you to ask questions about living in

Thailand, or Pattaya. We ask you to offer your

own observations and suggestions on how to

live better in Pattaya. Your humorous stories

(jokes) are welcome, but remember you are in

mixed company. Whether you are a new Expat,

just visiting on holiday, or consider yourself an

"old hand" at being an Expat in Thailand, you

will find the Open Forum has humor and

helpful information to offer.

TRIP TO SEE PYGMALION “MY FAIR LADY” AT THE BANGKOK COMMUNITY

THEATER – SHOW AND DINNER ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 – Richard Smith is

sponsoring this trip. The play is by George Bernard Shaw and the movie “My Fair Lady” was

based on the play. It is the story of a wealthy, educated English gentleman trying to remake a

London street waif into a seemingly highly educated Lady, with all the very humorous trials and

tribulations involved. The play is presented by the Bangkok Community Theater group at the

British Club on Silom Road in Bangkok at 7:30 pm. The 1,200 Baht ticket includes a buffet

(carvery) dinner before the play; there is also a cash bar available. Pickup will be at 4:00pm at the

Markland Hotel on Beach Road. Those going may stay overnight at the next door Narai Hotel or

return to Pattaya the same evening (if you want to stay overnight, but book a different hotel, you

may do so). Richard says there are only 3 seats left in the very nice minivan taking us to and from

baht per person. The Narai charge for an overnight stay is 1,700 baht - this is a special price – we

will make the reservations for you. Returning to Pattaya - the minivan will pick us up at 2:00 or

JESTER‟S GALA CHARITY PARTY NIGHT AT AMARI ON SATURDAY,

SEPTEMBER 24 – DO YOU WANT TO JOIN A PCEC TABLE? – This annual charitable

event of the Jesters Care4Kids is always a lot of fund. This year it is being held in the Amari‟s

main Ballroom – tables for 10 are about 19,000 Baht for the dinner and bottomless glasses of

sodas, beer, or wine. There will be live entertainment as well as a fundraising auction. We will

have a signup sheet to see if we can get enough for a PCEC table at the party. David Meador and

Stuart Saunders are promoting the event, so contact them if you have any questions. If you can‟t

be at the meeting and want to sign up, send an email to [email protected].

AN ADDITIONAL GROUP HEALTH INSURANCE POLICY THAT WILL BENEFIT

OLDER MEMBERS IS BEING CONSIDERED BY THE BOARD – The Board is considering

accepting an offer by another insurance company for an additional group policy that will cover

older members if there is enough interest among members. The current policy will only insure

members that are aged up to 59 and a half years old; further, it ceases its coverage when the

member reaches the age of 65. The policy being considered will underwrite members up to age 65

and will not cease coverage until the member is 75 years of age. Both offer similar coverage; but

the new one being considered offers slightly more per day for room/board/nursing and its

premiums are less. Members that qualify for both may also want to compare its coverage and

premiums to the existing group policy since the new policy would cover them for an additional 10

years. Khun Chamnong Anusat-utai (Neng) is the agent for this AXA Insurance group policy – he

spoke briefly at last Sunday‟s meeting about the policy. If there is enough interest shown, the

Board will vote on accepting this policy as an additional group policy available to members. We

have posted more information on the website. This information is a comparison of the coverage

under the current Group policy and the AXA policy. This information is at

http://www.pattayacityexpatsclub.com/expats/docs/announcements.pdf - select the topic Club

Announcements and scroll down. The plan information provided to the Board regarding coverage

and conditions is available by emailing us at [email protected]. If you are

interested, please put your name on the signup sheet at this Sunday‟s meeting so we or Khun Neng

can furnish you with additional information.

GRAND OPENING OF MERCY CENTER CHILDREN‟S HOME ON SUNDAY,

SEPTEMBER 25 – The official opening of the new Mercy Center Children‟s Home (Baan

Khong Por) will begin at 3pm and they have extended an invitation for PCEC members to attend.

They are also asking for volunteers to help with the organization of the event. Their invitation

necessary), books, shoes, uniforms, lunches and care. There's still more to the MERCY Center

Pattaya, whose new offices are by Big C South off Duck Square/Pattaya Tai, and you can find out

on 25th September or by telephoning our new member, Lyndy on 088-208-1318. Official

invitations will be issued and, meantime, if anyone would care to donate time, goods or

Last Week‟s Meeting

They care, so they help. This was the general

message from Lewis (Woody Underwood,

Chairman of the Jesters Care for Kids Charity at

the Club‟s Sunday, August 28 meeting at the

Amari‟s Tavern by the Sea Restaurant. After the

usual announcements, Master of Ceremonies

Richard Silverberg introduced Woody who was

born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and grew up in the

San Francisco Bay area. He received his B.S.

degree in Biology from Humboldt State

University in 1972 and in 1973 he became an

American Peace Corps (APC) Volunteer in

Nepal. Beginning in 1975 until 1985 his

activities centered around Nepal as he continued

training APC Volunteers and instructors, serving

as a naturalist and trip leader in the Himalayas,

which also included Kashmir, Ladhak, Bhutan,

and Vietnam. He made his first trip to Thailand

in 1980 and relocated here in 1985 where he

became and still is involved with a bar business.

He continued to lead treks in Nepal during the

winter and spring up until 1993. He was

President of the Jesters Motorcycle Club from

1998 to 2007 and has been Chairman of the

Jesters Care for Kids charity drive from its

inception in 1998 to present.

Woody began by giving a brief history of the

Jesters Motorcycle Club and how it became

involved in the Jesters Care for Kids Charity

work. They primarily have two events to raise

funds, one is the Children‟s Fair and the other is

their Gala Party Night (originally called the Pub

Night). Woody noted that their first efforts raised

994 thousand baht, but they the organizers

couldn‟t let that stand since it was so close, so

they chipped in and made it 1 million baht. Two

years ago, they received 7 million baht and last

year, what with the fall off of tourism and the

economy, they still managed to raise a little over

6 million baht. He noted that there are 15

members on their committee; all volunteers, so

donations go to their charity efforts and not to

administration. They don‟t set targets, they do

the best they can to raise as much as they can.

Woody pointed out that if they build, Jesters

does the building and if they buy, Jesters buys

the products.

Using pictures, Woody described their many

projects and how they have helped those in need

over the past 12 years and pointing out some

specific individuals that have contributed their

time and effort in carrying out their program. He

noted that their primary target for assistance is

the Fountain of Life Center under the Good

Shepherd Foundation which provides kids with

documentation, education, activities, meals,

medical and dental care, and scholarships for

entering government schools. They also help

schools in the surrounding area, last year they

helped Ban Amphur Primary School, Nikon 3,

Nikon 4, and Nikon 7 Schools in Rayong

Province. The projects for the schools are

construction of needed facilities, such as a new

water filtration, construction of a kindergarten

and renovation of existing toilets. They also

contribute to shelters, the Camillian Social

Center (assists HIV infected children), the Ban

Jing Jai Orphanage, Kate‟s Project (helps the

poor in Nong Prue), and the Kharma Foundation

in Kanchanaburi. Further, they assisted special

schools: Khao Baisri Home for Disabled Boys,

Pattaya Redemptorist School for the Blind, and

helped sponsor Special Olympics for the

handicapped.

Woody concluded by describing the plans for

this year‟s Children‟s Fair at Diana Garden

Resort and Driving Range, which will be on

September 11, from 10am to 6pm, and the Gala

Party Night at the Amari Resort starting at 7pm.

The Fair is always a great event for families to

attend with lots to do. Many of the children they

help are there, do some performances, and

always have a great time. The Party Night is

more for adults with food and live entertainment

and dancing. There will be a raffle with the top

prize being a Honda PCX motorcycle and several

items will also be auctioned off. More

information on the Jesters Care for Kids can be

found on their website:

PATTAYA CITY EXPATS CLUB NEWSLETTER September 2, 2011

After Woody answered many questions from the

audience, Richard Silverberg brought everyone

up to date on upcoming events and called on

member Gary Brown to conduct the always

informative and sometime humorous Open

Forum where questions are asked and answered

about Expat living in Thailand,

recommendations for restaurants and movies are

made, an and perhaps a joke or two are told.

frames for re-cycling and distributing to needy people in Thailand and Pattaya. He recently brought

frames around, please bring them to the meeting, give them to Richard Smith. On Dave's latest visit,
