History

UNATHERM was established as a family businessin 1965. Right from the beginning the companyfocused its efforts on offering its customers themost advanced and efficient products for heatingand sanitation.

From the production of electric floor heatingsystems, and from transforming polypropylenepipes into tailor made heating grids, thedevelopment led to the latest step, the productionof polyethylene pipes.

PE-RT and PE-Xc pipes

UNATHERM was one of the very first companiesto manufacture pipes for heating and sanitationfrom DOWLEX*, and thus is nowadays one of themost experienced manufacturers and suppliers ofthis pipe in the world.

Location

The company is located in the pleasantcountryside of the "Oberbergisches Land",50 km east of Cologne, Germany, where theproduction facilities have constantly beenexpanded since 1993.

Philosophy

The management of the company is still in thefamily’s hands. And we all dedicate a100 % of our work to satisfying our customers’needs. Continuous development, together withour customers as partners, is the central idea ofour philosophy. Therefore, it is of majorimportance to us to build up and maintain goodpersonal relations with our business partnersaround the world.

We would be glad if we could also welcome youas a future member of the growing "family" ofUNATHERM business partners.

UNATHERM Quality Pipesof DOWLEX*UNATHERM PE-RT and PE-Xc pipes are made ofpure DOWLEX* without addition of any recycledmaterial. As the raw material is the basis for thequality of a pipe, we use the in our opinion bestraw material.

Our pipes made of DOWLEX* have twocharacteristics that should be emphasized inparticular:

● high flexibility

● excellent smoothness of the pipe´sinner surface

The high flexibility of our pipes permits coldlaying, even at temperatures as low as -10°C.

The smoothness of the pipe´s inner surface, achieved by a special manufacturing process, guarantees the lowest possible flow resistance. The "roughness" of our pipe´s inner surface is aslow as 400 Å! If a pipe shows a rough inner sur-face, a deposit can build up, thus increasing flowresistance considerably.

Pipes for use in floor heating and radiatorconnection are coated with an oxygen barriermade of EVOH.

This oxygen barrier is applied to the basic pipeusing an adhesive resin. Basic pipe, adhesive resinand oxygen barrier thus form an inseparable unit. This system represents the state of the art. Thesepipes carry the name "oxystop".

Polyethylene, the raw material we employ, is apure hydro-carbon compound that is ecologicallyneutral. Our production waste can be recycled.

PE-RT Pipes (Polyethylene ofRaised Temperature Resistance)DIN 16833, DIN 4726/4721

Our PE-Xc pipes are made of DOWLEX* BG 2340.

They are crosslinked by accelerated electrons(PE-Xc). This process is used for crosslinking ofabout 85% of all PE-X pipes manufactured inGermany. This method is economic and, above all, ensures an even spread of crosslinking.

With this physical crosslinking method onlycarbon-carbon (C-C) bonds are formed under therelease of hydrogen, and the properties oforiginal polyethylene are widely maintained. No chemicals are added for this ecologicallyneutral process.

For the production of our PE-RT pipes we useDOWLEX* 2344 E, only. It is the first material thathas been developed especially for the productionof pipes for floor heating, radiator connectionand hot and cold drinking water supply.Due to its unique molecular structure withoctene homogeneously distributed over thepolymer back-bone and the narrow molecularweight distribution, DOWLEX* 2344 E doesnot need crosslinking in order to perform long-term under elevated temperature and pressureconditions.

The requirements our PE-RT pipe needs to meetare laid down in the standards that haveespecially been worked out for this pipe:DIN 16833, DIN 16834, DIN 4721 and DIN 4724.Long-term testing proved that the requirementsof DIN 4726 are exceeded by far. Thus, theextrapolated life time of a PE-RT pipe for instanceis much longer than the specified 50 yearsat 70° C.

UNATHERM – The Safety Pipe

Production & Quality AssuranceManufacturing high quality pipes requiresconstant quality control – from the receipt of theraw material to the finished product.

The control of the pipe production is of specialimportance to UNATHERM – it is carried outcontinuously:

● inspection of the delivered raw material

● supervision of the manufacturing process

● checks during and after manufacturing

● final control before dispatch

Our quality assurance is based on the controland check regulations of the SüddeutschesKunststoffzentrum, Würzburg and otherEuropean test institutes, on DIN ISO 9002 andthe corresponding DIN standards.

The melt index of all delivered raw materialis examined according to DIN 53735, as thisplays a major part with regard to the futurequality of the pipe. Only absolutely faultless ma-terial is released for production.

Our machines and devices used for manufacturingrepresent the state of the art. Our SPS-controlledextruders e.g. are the basis for an optimum pipeproduction.

During the pipe production the manufacturingprocess is constantly controlled according toDIN 8074/8075 and regulations HR 3.2/HR 3.16 ofthe SKZ.

This includes examination of

● exact wall thickness and outer diameter(DIN 8075 4.2)

● outer and inner, water carrying surface

All data are recorded and are available at anytime, even years later.

The finished pipes are subject to the followingtests:

● change after hot storage (DIN 8075 4.4)

● homogeneity of the material

● pressure resistance at 20° C and 95° C(DIN 53759)

For effecting these tests, our laboratory isequipped with the latest testing instruments.Only controlled and perfect pipes are releasedfor dispatch.

SKZ CertificatesFor our PE-RT pipe we concluded an inspectionand control contract with the SüddeutschesKunststoffzentrum, Würzburg. The pipe iscontinuously controlled according to HR 3.16and marked "SKZ A 240".

We also have an inspection and controlcontract with the Süddeutsches Kunststoff-zentrum, Würzburg for our PE-Xc pipe. Thetests are based on HR 3.2, and the pipe ismarked "SKZ A 253".

Bending radius

We allow a bending radius according to DIN 4726.E.g. pipe 16 x 2,0 mm, bending radius in accor-dance with the above standard 80 mm.

Fittings

We recommend fittings made of brass (e.g.BEULCO). The fittings have to be installedaccording to the manufacturer´s guidelines.Fittings must be suitable for pipes accordingto DIN 16833, DIN 16892.

Storage

Pipes must be protected against directsunlight. We recommend to store pipes incardboard boxes or black polyethylenebags.

Application sanitation pipes

Max. operating pressure: 10 barMax. operating temperature: 95°C

Application heating pipes

Max. operating pressure: 6 barMax. operating temperature: 95°C,short time temperature: 110°C

Pipes with oxygen barrier layer

The oxygen permeability is < 0,1 g/m³din accordance with DIN 4726.

Heating circuit additives

For pipes without oxygen barrier layer,a corrosion inhibitor must be used inthe heating circuit. We recommendVaridos KK from Schilling Chemie inGermany.

Disposable Cardboard DrumEWT

Product description

The UNATHERM EWT is useful and helps youto work more efficient with coils of morethan 500 m.

With its compact size, the UNATHEM dispo-sable cardboard drum allows very easy hand-ling, and due to the width of 60 cm it fits everydoor.

The UNATHERM EWT is equipped with front sideholes of 35 mm, so standard steel bars upto 1" can be used as spindles to uncoil the pipes. The maximum coil length, depending on theoutside diameter of the pipe, is 1.200 m.

Material

The UNATHERM disposable cardboard drum ismanufactured completely of corrugated card-board. Thus, it can be disposed easily and free ofextra costs.
