Editor’s note: The article on the previous page (page 4) was a special feature article from

Pedianews 1995 written by Dr. Cristina Ramizo and the article on this page

(page 5) was from an article from Pedianews 2010.

As an editor-in-chief of this publication I really wanted to do some interview of

Dr. Honorio dela Cruz, the Father of Pediatrics in Mindanao, but unfortunately

I was not given a chance since when I assumed my position he was already

retired from his work because of his illness.

As a medical student, what I knew of him was that he was the former Dean of

the College of Medicine of DMSF and one of the author of the book Funda-

mentals of Pediatrics. I really didn't know that he has really a big name in our

society. When I was a medical clerk, I would hear my seniors (residents)

warning us (students) to prepare a complete medical bag as he randomly

checked it and be prepared with our brains for he would throw questions from

time to time. Yes , at his very busy time he would always have an ample time

to educate our innocent minds. So as a medical student we tried to avoid

making rounds with him in the hospital (which means we are not prepared).

When I entered my pediatric residency training at San Pedro Hospital he was

one of my favorite mentor. He was the earliest to make rounds (as early as

5:00 am) and I admire him on how he treat his patients. Aside from that, he

would always have a time to talk to his residents and it would always be a

leaning experience. One question that I would never forget (and one of my

favorite question to ask to my students) when confronted with a Dengue pa-

tient “ What laboratory parameter is important in managing dengue patients”?

Of course the innocent mind would always answer that it is platelet. And we

were wrong because it is the hematocrit. For Dr. dela cruz, would always

say,,, the platelet will go down and down but what is important is the hema-

tocrit, it should never go up. From then one, whenever I’m on duty and until I

finished my residency training I made sure that I will accompany him on his

rounds. And I am proud to be one of his mentees.

Thank you Sir and rest assured that your legacy will live longer if not forever.

Davao City has been envied by many because of the strict implementation of the anti-smoking ordi-

nance (Ordinance no. 0367-12 series of 2012) which was implemented by President Rodrigo R.

Duterte when he was still the mayor of Davao City.

On July 13, 2017, PPS-DSMC launched its Tobacco Control Advocacy and Awareness Campaign

held at 2nd

floor of SM Annex, Ecoland, Davao City. The main objective of this advocacy is to create

programs towards a Smoke-free Philippines ALL FOR THE FILIPINO CHILD.

The event was participated by the PPS-DSMC members, students and residents in training of the

different pediatric training hospital and grade 7-9 students from selected schools in Davao City. This

was commenced by the cutting of ribbon by the PPS-DSMC President Dr. Ma. Theresa G. Banes,

joined by the 2 distinct judges of the slogan-poster making contest, Dr. Nina Custodio and Capt. Vol-

taire Engracia and the Chair of the PPS-DSMC Tobacco Control Advocacy Group, Dr. Janet

this event possible. The schools were as follows: University of the Immaculate Conception, Philip-

pine Women’s College of Davao, Brainworks School Inc., Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School,

Davao City National High School and Ateneo de Davao University.

SAYAWAN SA TUGTUGING PINOY

Fellowship nights are among the anticipated events in every Annual Convention. The pediatri-

cians from each Chapter showcase their "hidden talents" during this once-a-year event. This

time, PPS-DSMC, reperesented by the Pediatricians from Tagum Davao del Norte danced to

the tune of Iskul Bukol, Si Aida o Si Lorna o Si Fe, and Blue Jeans. The 2 months preparation

was both exhausting and fun. Sweating" seemed to be an understatement as the fast-paced

songs pushed the dancers to their vital lung capacities.

Came the fellowship night on April 2,2017 held at

Sofitel Hotel , everyone was busy. The hotel room

was packed - make up on one side, and hair being

done on the other. And of course, picture-taking eve-

rywhere.

The PPS-DSMC banner was proudly carried by our

Chapter President , Dr. Maria Teresa G. Bañes, and

our Chapter Secretary, Dr. Gilda F. Agbisit. Along

with the PPS officers, chapter representatives,

and distinguished guests, the fellowship night was in

full swing. The Department of Health Secretary, Dr.

Paulene Ross Ubial, was the guest speaker for the

said event. Dr. Ubial assured the pediatricians that

the Department of Health will work hand in hand for

the better future of the Filipino children.

Dinner, dancing, and merriment followed. I believe

most of the dancers were not able to swallow any-

thing until after the dance. Jitters perhaps? Excite-

ment? Probably, but personally, it was more of "let's-

get-this-over-with" thing. We were happy to hear ap-

plause after the dance. Kudos to the dancers: Dr. Ya-

mas, Dr. Gaviola, Dr. Llanos, Dr. Narvasa, Dr. Dy,

Dr. Dalisay, Dr. Geralde, Dr. Apolinario, Dr. Figue-

roa, Dr. Racho, Dr. Nisperos, Dr. Tolentino, Dr.

Delacruz, Dr. Tiongco, Dr. Virtudazo, Dr. Elumbar-

ing, Dr. Isip, Dr. Sebumpan, Dr. Casio, Dr. Usman,

Dr. Lozarito, Migz, and yours truly. Until our next

performance. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who

watched and applauded.

YOLO TWO! #EhKasiTeenager Part 2

The First Teen Forum in Davao City “You Only Live Once (YOLO), #EhKasiTeenager” held last No-

vember 19, 2016 at the Royal Mandaya was a success. Hence, led to a second (but hopefully not

the last) of this forum held last April 29, 2017 at Grand Men Seng Hotel, Davao City.

A total of 250 teens, from selected barangay of Davao City actively participated in this forum. The

event was organized by the Philippine Pediatric Society-Davao Southern Mindanao Chapter (PPS-

DSMC) in partnership with the Department of Health- Region XI and Da-

vao City Council for the Welfare of Children. This event was spearheaded

by the Chair of the Child Advocacy Committee of the PPS-DSMC, Dr.

Ruchibelle S. Baunding, with the supervision of our very energetic Chap-

ter President, Dr. Maria Theresa G. Bañes.

According to the recent statistics, Davao City is ranked third in the country

for high cases of teenage pregnancy while the Philippines is number one

in Asia. With this upsetting prevalent cases, the organizers took the initia-

tive to come up with this activity focused on the very vivacious and sus-

ceptible phase of the teen’s life. This activity aims to strengthen the

awareness campaign among teenagers, who are considered as the most

vulnerable sector of our society.

The organizers assiduously prepared this event to make it appropriate for

the teens. Local experts were invited to share their knowledge on some

medical and non-medical issues which are relevant to the participants

based also on the feedback made by the teenagers who participated on

the first teen forum. Dr. Dova Sayon-Gonzales talked about Suicide and

Depression; Dr. Darlene S.J. Estaurt (Obstetrician and Gynecologist)

adeptly discussed about Teenage Pregnancy Dr. Paulo Woodruff Gon-

zales (Addiction Psychiatrist) talked about Addiction on Alcohol, Drugs

and Internet and Cyber bullying;

Dr. Banes, PPS-DSMC President

giving her welcome address and

overview of the program

Dr. Sayon-Gonzales on her talk

about Suicide and Depressiom

Dr. Estuart on her Teenage Preg-

nancy talk

Dr. Robaylyn B. Buensalida, a Dermatologist, shared her

knowledge on Skincare in Adolescents; Ms. Priscilla

Senoc, talked about Gender Sensitivity and Awareness

and last of all, Dr. Leia Lacuesta-Corro a Clinical Nutri-

tionist, shared her expertise on Achieving A Healthy Teen-

age Lifestyle.

The forum offered not only a venue to discuss vital issues

and concerns among teenagers, it also had visual screen-

ing for the participants sponsored by the Metro Davao Op-

tometric Society and SPMC Ophthalmology Department.

Moreover , Brokenshire Integrated Hospital Ministries, Inc

teen center was introduced to the teen by the OB-

Residents of the said institution. This center provide a ho-

listic and comprehensive health services for teenagers

and adolescents. The event concluded with a Zumba ses-

sion participated by the teens and the organizers.

Kudos to the organizers and participants for the success of

this event.
