A Note from the Executive Artistic Director
Dear Patrons
Welcome to our 35th season paying tribute to sources of inspiration. The season planning began with the desire to honor some of our Pendragon family. This year in particular, we lost a wonderful actress and dear friend, Binnie Holum. She was an inspiration to all who worked with her and saw her on our stage. We also express our gratitude for the lives of Chris McGovern, a gifted actor and company member, and Tim Jock, a long-time friend of the theater and former Mayor. They all provided us with moments of joy and laughter both onstage and off.
As we pay tribute to the people behind-the-scenes and on the stage, our plays this year all embody the notion of homage. Our family show this year, The Snow Queen, is the inspiration behind the film phenomenon Frozen. Tintypes pays respect to historical figures of the period from 1890-1910. It is also a nod of appreciation to our founders, who started Pendragon 35 years ago when this family-friendly musical was nominated for a Tony Award. Proving that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a hilarious tribute reflecting his admiration of Chekhov’s plays. The Seagull, our touring show, is one of the sources of inspiration behind Durang’s work. Stoppard’s Arcadia is a tribute to everything from chaos theory to Lord Byron. Our collaboration with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, Façade, honors Edith Sitwell by setting her poems to music composed by William Walton, her protégé.
Gratitude, respect and admiration are at the core of all these plays. All of you have inspired us to continue to bring the best of professional theatre to the Adirondacks. We hope in turn that our season of tributes will inspire you.

Arts in Education TourThe goal of the Arts in Education Tour is to introduce live theatre to
youth, both locally and in communities who do not have access to
live theater. Touring from September through January, to over 4000
students, Pendragon has established a reputation for excellence and
for value that has maintained the demand for our tour, limited primar-
ily (and significantly) by school budgets.
In selecting our touring show, we look for classics that are often on
the school reading lists or have direct connections to the curricular
goals set for high school students. The plays we have done range
from Terra Nova to Death of a Salesman. This year, we will be producing
Chekhov’s A Seagull, for its timeless themes as well as providing an
introduction to the works of this theater master. We often use new
translations and seek, in the direction, to re-imagine the classic play to
engage a high school audience.
In addition to the live performances, we provide study guides and
make the cast available for talk-back sessions following performances.
We believe the tour accomplishes many objectives besides students’
knowledge of the play, including:
FuTurE pATrons: According to an NEA study, youth who attend
live performances are more likely to attend performances as adults.
IncrEAsEd EmpAThy: A University of Arkansas study shows an
increase literary knowledge, empathy, tolerance, and ability to
recognize emotions after seeing live theater. We think that has long-
term impact as well “The chance to develop a cultural understand-
ing of oneself and one’s situation turns out to have far more efficacy
in breaking the cycle of poverty than does the opportunity to do
menial work.” (Robert Weisbuch, Diversity & Democracy Winter 2015 Vol.
18 No. 1.)

In the spring of 1981, Pendragon, as yet unnamed, was coalescing its second production — Under Milkwood by Dylan Thomas. The fledgling group began to think that a name, an identity, would be good. A host of names was of-fered up. One person, drawn to the idea of the British Isles because of the then-current production, fell upon Pendragon. Why? Uther Pendragon was the father of Arthur, King of England. Pendragon means chief leader of the British tribes. While not in England, we still hope to provide the lead or impetus towards excellence in theatre arts.

MY FIRST SEASON AT PENDRAGON...I arrived in December ready to hit the ground running. I had been a fan of Pendragon Theatre for years, and now I could finally call it my home. Although I arrived too late to see most of the fabulous shows from last summer, I had already heard wonderful things about them. I was lucky enough to be a part of the Holiday Cabaret performance before my bags were even unpacked!
As the season progressed, I got to see the delightful holiday production of It’s A Wonderful Life: A Radio Play. I sat riveted at the edge of my seat watching Pendragon’s staging of Death of a Salesman. Despite the fact that I had been in the show myself as an actor and also had seen it done a million times, this pro-duction gave it a depth and freshness that made it entirely new to me.
Winter Carnival came to town, and with that, Pendragon embraced its hippie spirit and did not one but two sold out performances of “Saranac Lake Sings the 60’s.” We announced our prospective new season for the summer of 2015 and received lots of enthusiastic responses for the diverse offerings and the beautiful Tributes theme. We kicked off a big feasibility study to see where the future will take us.
But my favorite project by far has been the Young Playwright’s Festival. It was my first one and I’ll never forget it. I co-taught the children’s workshop in the morning and the kids were wildly enthusiastic. We presented original staged readings from local playwrights in the afternoon. At night we presented the winning plays, picked from over 30 submissions and fully staged to a packed, standing room only audience. The reception afterwards was just delightful, with lots of happy kids, parents, actors, and audience. It was an amazing night, and I’m already looking forward to next years’ event!
I’ve also had so much fun meeting and working with so many of you in the community, from ArtWorks, the NCCC students for their annual talent show, the Saranac Lake Kiwanis Club, the kids from the High School who came in for costume fittings with Kent, and many, many more. Saranac Lake is just bursting with people who are passionate about the arts.
As I write this we are preparing for our Season Opening Fund raiser at Casa Del Sol, and are already prepping our “behind the scenes” scheduling for the big summer season. We have a fund raiser for Hobofest next week as well, an upcoming performance to benefit the ALS Foundation, and so much more. I can honestly say I am just as excited as you all are to see what magic happens next with Pendragon Theatre. Please feel free to contact me if you have any ideas for new collaborations, want to give feedback on something you’ve seen or experienced through Pendragon, or just to say hello. I’m looking forward to a fabulous year to come!

The Future of Pendragon Theatre - Where Will We Live and Play?As we go to print, we are conducting a feasibility study to consider options for the way forward. Using AMS Planning and Research, consultants specializing in the arts, we have talked to many community members to determine the best way to serve the needs of Pendragon, the community, and the region. We are considering all options, including renovation or new construction, on the current site or else where, especially Main Street. In partnership with the Village, North Country Community College, and Saranac Lake Artworks, we hope to develop options that will meet our needs as well as those of the burgeoning arts community, options which will benefit the entire region. Rest assured, no matter what, this will still be your Pendragon!What can you do to help? Let me count the ways! Your ideas, your contributions, and your personal efforts are all appreciated. This summer at Pendragon Theatre, join us for the Pendragon experience!
CAMP PENDRAGON Open to students from grades 7 through 12, Camp Pendragon is a musical theatre intensive workshop for middle-high school theatre students from around the Tri-Lakes Region. This summer's selection is Pippin. Positions will be available for students on stage and backstage. There will be 15 acting roles and 5 technical positions, for a total of 20 campers. Pendragon company member Matt Sorensen will be directing the camp with musical direction by Elizabeth Cordes.
Auditions to determine casting will take place June 15 @ 4:30 pm at Pendragon Theatre.
Camp dates: August 3-22Monday through Friday, 9 am to 3 pm with two public performances on August 22 at 1 pm and 7 pm.

Pendragon seemed the perfect fit for a small-scale musical like Tintypes. The piece is a tribute to the idea of America as a melting pot. The music is from a seemingly more “innocent” time, but the characters interactions provide a sense of depth and social commentary still relevant today. I liked the challenge
of staging a piece that essentially moves from song to song, yet still manages to interweave a narrative between characters like Anna Held, Charlie Chaplin, Teddy Roosevelt and Emma Goldman. On the stage they are put in juxtaposition and their experiences highlight both the struggles and joys of finding your voice and place in America. - Karen Lordi-Kirkham, director Tintypes
What can I say about Vanya &? It’s a wacky, heartfelt piece. I’ve always adored Durang’s absurd view of the world and relationships. He has a way of making us laugh at despair and dreams deferred or completely dashed out. It’s at once completely zany and altogether too real in how the siblings
unleash their feelings of resentment and regret they feel towards each other and towards their lives. The play is built upon Chekhov’s plays and plot lines, but it is distinctly Durang’s universe. What drew me to the piece? It is a long-time dream to direct Arcadia by Tom Stoppard and I couldn’t be more delighted than to bring it to life at Pendragon this summer. One of the reasons is my own obsession with Time and what it means as we broaden and deepen our understanding of it as something larger and more complex
than its common linear form. Tom Stoppard demands we consider Time-- with a big T-- as a visceral emotive substance. It is not neutral or in the background but it is at the forefront of the comedy. How does Time manipulate us? Of course, Stoppard is also manipulating Time, in the best theatre tradition, resulting in delightful and poignant pandemonium. - Kimberley Bouchard, director Arcadia
