Pentecost Sunday June 4, 2017 ST. PIUS X PARISH 13670 E. 13th Place, Aurora, CO, 80011 Oce: 303-364-7435 Fax: 303-340-0122 Oce Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 - 5:00 pm STPIUSXPARISH.ORG & STPIUSXSCHOOL.NET School: 303-364-6515 PENTECOST Today we contemplate and re-live in the liturgy the outpouring of the Holy Spirit sent by the risen Christ upon his Church; an event of grace which filled the Upper Room in Jerusalem and then spread throughout the world (…) I would like to reflect on three words linked to the working of the Holy Spir- it: newness, harmony and mission. 1. Newness always makes us a bit fearful, because we feel more secure if we have everything under con- trol, if we are the ones who build, program and plan our lives in accordance with our own ideas, our own comfort, our own preferences. This is also the case when it comes to God. Often we follow him, we ac- cept him, but only up to a certain point. It is hard to abandon ourselves to him with complete trust, al- lowing the Holy Spirit to be the soul and guide of our lives in our every decision. We fear that God may force us to strike out on new paths and leave behind our all too narrow, closed and selfish horizons in order to become open to his own. Yet throughout the history of salvation, whenever God reveals himself, he brings newness - God always brings newness -, and demands our complete trust (…) Let us ask our- selves today: Are we open to “God’s surprises”? Or are we closed and fearful before the newness of the Holy Spirit? Do we have the courage to strike out along the new paths which God’s newness sets before us, or do we resist, barricaded in transient structures which have lost their capacity for openness to what is new? (…) 2. The Holy Spirit would appear to create disorder in the Church, since he brings the diversity of char- isms and gifts; yet all this, by his working, is a great source of wealth, for the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of unity, which does not mean uniformity, but which leads everything back to harmony (…) Journeying to- gether in the Church, under the guidance of her pastors who possess a special charism and ministry, is a sign of the working of the Holy Spirit. Having a sense of the Church is something fundamental for eve- ry Christian, every community and every movement (…) Am I open to the harmony of the Holy Spirit, overcoming every form of exclusivity? Do I let myself be guided by him, living in the Church and with the Church? 3. (…) The older theologians used to say that the soul is a kind of sailboat, the Holy Spirit is the wind which fills its sails and drives it forward, and the gusts of wind are the gifts of the Spirit. Lacking his im- pulse and his grace, we do not go forward. The Holy Spirit draws us into the mystery of the living God and saves us from the threat of a Church which is gnostic and self-referential, closed in on herself; he im- pels us to open the doors and go forth to proclaim and bear witness to the good news of the Gospel, to communicate the joy of faith, the encounter with Christ. The Holy Spirit is the soul of mission (…) do we tend to stay closed in on ourselves, on our group, or do we let the Holy Spirit open us to mission? (Pope Francis, Excerpts from his Pentecost Sunday homily, May 19, 2013)

PENTECOST Today we contemplate and re-live in the liturgy the outpouring of the Holy Spirit sent by the risen Christ upon his Church; an event of grace which filled the Upper Room in Jerusalem and then spread throughout the world (…) I would like to reflect on three words linked to the working of the Holy Spir-it: newness, harmony and mission.

1. Newness always makes us a bit fearful, because we feel more secure if we have everything under con-trol, if we are the ones who build, program and plan our lives in accordance with our own ideas, our own comfort, our own preferences. This is also the case when it comes to God. Often we follow him, we ac-cept him, but only up to a certain point. It is hard to abandon ourselves to him with complete trust, al-lowing the Holy Spirit to be the soul and guide of our lives in our every decision. We fear that God may force us to strike out on new paths and leave behind our all too narrow, closed and selfish horizons in order to become open to his own. Yet throughout the history of salvation, whenever God reveals himself, he brings newness - God always brings newness -, and demands our complete trust (…) Let us ask our-selves today: Are we open to “God’s surprises”? Or are we closed and fearful before the newness of the Holy Spirit? Do we have the courage to strike out along the new paths which God’s newness sets before us, or do we resist, barricaded in transient structures which have lost their capacity for openness to what is new? (…)

2. The Holy Spirit would appear to create disorder in the Church, since he brings the diversity of char-isms and gifts; yet all this, by his working, is a great source of wealth, for the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of unity, which does not mean uniformity, but which leads everything back to harmony (…) Journeying to-gether in the Church, under the guidance of her pastors who possess a special charism and ministry, is a sign of the working of the Holy Spirit. Having a sense of the Church is something fundamental for eve-ry Christian, every community and every movement (…) Am I open to the harmony of the Holy Spirit, overcoming every form of exclusivity? Do I let myself be guided by him, living in the Church and with the Church?

3. (…) The older theologians used to say that the soul is a kind of sailboat, the Holy Spirit is the wind which fills its sails and drives it forward, and the gusts of wind are the gifts of the Spirit. "When the bee has gathered the dew of heaven and the earth's sweetest nectar from the flowers, it turns it into honey, then has- tens to its hive. In the same way, the priest, having taken from the altar the Son of God (who is as the dew from heaven, and true son of Mary, flower of our humanity), gives him to you as delicious food."

- St. Francis de Sales

ARCHBISHOP CATHOLIC APPEAL If you have not donated to the 2017 Archbishop’s Catholic Ap-peal, please mail your gift today. For as Saint Paul instructs us in his First Letter to Timothy, we are “…to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, ready to share…” (1 Timothy 6:18) All parish families are asked to help those enduring hunger, homelessness, and hopelessness by sharing a portion of their ma-terial blessings with the Appeal. Please visit www.Archden.Org/GiveToday or call 303.715.3111 to make your gift today.

We thank God for a wonderful year! We served over 250 students ages 3-14 in our school this year! Our students received excellent instruction both academically and in their faith. We are blessed to have spent this year with them, and we wish them a safe and blessed summer!

SOCIAL MINISTRIES

Parents as you try to finalize your kids summer schedule make sure to save the date for Totus Tuus Kids Summer Catholic Camp. Totus Tuus is coming July 23- 28. The Elementary camp will be in the day time and the middle school camp will be in the evening.

Need HOST FAMILIES

Our Totus Tuus instructors (two men/two women) will come from Catholic colleges outside of Colorado. They will need a place to stay for 6-7 nights from July 22 to July 28 (& possibly 29). The Program keeps costs down by having the instructors stay in the homes of parishioners during their week at each par-ish. We need two families who are willing to host one of the instructors during their stay at St. Pius which includes providing room and board for that one week. If you can help, please con-tact Vladimir at the Parish Office.
