Don Antonio's Dispatch…………

I’ll be gone Monday and Tuesday for a conference I need to attend in Lansing. My apologies for being away so much. Hopefully I’m not accused of being an absentee dad!! Monday our Mass time is at 12:00 noon instead of 8:15 a.m. because we are honoring the great work of our St. Joseph Guild. These are men who work to beautify our grounds and help to keep our parish looking nice and maintained well. I am very appreciative of their work. Some of the members are getting more senior, so if there are any young men in the parish who are willing to help as they are able, please contact the parish office and we can get you in touch so you can know when the St. Joseph Guild works. Monday is the Memorial of St. Joseph the Worker, which is why we will honor them, and members of other St. Joseph Guilds from around Genesee County, on that day. Saturday, our second grade students will celebrate the Sacrament of Penance for the first time. That Sacrament is so amazing and beautiful, and I hope we can all appreciate more the importance of receiving God’s mercy. Just because the Year of Mercy ended does not mean that we no longer have to be merciful!! Last but not least, I want to invite you to take a pilgrimage with me to the Holy Land in May of 2018. We will be seeing the major spots of Jesus’ life, Death, and Resurrection. If you sign up by 16 May 2017, you can save $250 per person. Some parishioners have already expressed interest in going, and I know my parents will be going as well. To register, please visit https://gateway.gocollette.com/link/797834 or call Fuller Travel Service at (517) 819-8442. If you go, you will never hear the Gospel in the same way again!!

FAITH MOVING FORWARD Website: www.spxparish.com

Please Let Me Grow Old With You About 20 years ago I made my wife a musical CD with one of the tracks on it titled: “Please- Let Me Grow Old With You”- by Elton John. One line in the song: “After everything we’ve been through what’s left to prove? Please, please, please, let me grow old with you.” For twenty years the song only reminded me of her but that all changed the other day… It was the beginning of the week and the Charger Derby Auction was looking like it was going to be unsuccessful at best (by the time you read this the auction will be over- I hope it was good). Things seemed abysmal and we were barely selling the kind of tickets for dinner we have grown accustomed to selling. It is a struggle to keep picking up your chin to lead when the shifting landscape says stay down for the count, and you wonder how many times you can stand up after being knocked down so many times- count ‘em out 6, 7, 8, 9. When suddenly a young mother, who has stood by me for the last ten years, said, “why don’t you go up to the parish center and try selling to the Tuesday Toaster’s group- they’ve been here forever and are huge supporters of the church and school.” So off I went (begrudgingly) to make my pitch and try to sell tickets. When I stood in front of them, I realized something. It is kind of hard to explain what I felt, but I wanted… to become them- maybe not today or tomorrow, but someday I wanted to “grow old with them”. They are the parish and the people who stayed and believed in something greater than a priest or brick and mortar. They are the ones who stuck it out through the highs and lows, the light and the dark, and the times when the church and school looked like they were going to close some forty years ago. I want someday to be here in thirty years and support some young principal and let him or her know, “kid, I’ve been there- you’ll do fine.” Standing there in front of them I wondered what it takes to grow old with them. And then I recalled that this past Easter my wife and I read on Good Friday. With us was a junior at Powers, Ben, who narrated the Passion. Again, even behind people my age the next generation is stepping up and carrying our parish. And beyond them the future looks great when this week our own son and others receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, and become adults in our parish. The young will continue to carry us, so long as we remember to grow old with them. From the depths of my soul I thank you, our parish and supporters, who have chosen to grow old with us. While I’m not sure what the future will bring, I know my wife and I will stay and grow old with this parish. Keep the Faith (1 Timothy 6:12) R.J. Kaplan Principal

Dear Parishioners, Students, and Staff of St. Pius X: I would like to offer my humblest apologies for missing Mass on Wednesday, April 19th. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the most important thing for a Catholic community to celebrate each day in order to worship God and to be strengthened by His grace. As the priest who committed to offering mass for you on that day, I ask your forgiveness for not being there to provide this for you.

In Christ, Fr. Dan Kogut
