ENCOURAGEMENT

FROM THE EDITOR

Dr. Gordon McDonald  Executive Editor, Personal UPDATE

THE LORD HAS GIFTED ME  with a calling that requires constant vigilance on what is going on in the world and in our country. This isn’t always easy to endure. And requently,I don’t handle it well. With sel-interest and blatant disregard or our Constitutionalprotections increasing in our nation, it is oten dicult to remember whose ght this

actually is.

Our country, and the world, seems to be headed or a direct conrontation with God Him-sel. Every day there is another story that bears witness to the erosion o the Godly prin-ciples upon which this country was ounded. Every law that is passed, every legal judgmentseems to undermine our God-given reedoms, which were secured by courageous souls whoought and died that we might remain ree.

These present trends threaten to shake the strongest o hearts. I understand. I eel that also. But in these days, when we take the time and slow down enough to remember what hasgone on beore and the sacrices that were made, we need not be discouraged. The sacrices

were not in vain. Our eorts, successul or not, are not in vain. The desire to see God’s heart

rule this country once again is not in vain. We are not called to win. We are called to standup—or Him.

Chuck oten says that he is not a Republican or a Democrat, but a Monarchist. He servesa Coming King. In the ace o the concerted eort toviliy and condemn everything “God,” we must remem-ber. The worse it gets here, the closer we are to there.

We are not o this world. Jesus will one day set up HisKingdom here on earth, but right now the world can’t

help but reject Him and, by extension, us. Be encour-aged today that you are numbered among those that areidentied with Him.

AMERICA’S CHALLENGE

an organization devoted to encouraging people to study the Bible. He also ounded Koinonia Institute to enable people to have a Kingdom eect on the world today.

H

ave you noticed the moral decay pervading your land? Corruption is everywhere: through-

out the highest levels o government, in your entertainments, in your schools, even in

many o your churches.

Many o those in the corridors o power should be incarcerated or treason. There

are leaders who ail to exhibit the most elementary ethical conduct. Legislators that sign bills

they haven’t read; executives who are allowed to ignore the laws; judges who reverse juries,

amend laws, and indulge in social engineering . The entertainment industry celebrates every

imaginable evil and attacks all the amily values which God has estab-

lished or our welare. And the educational establishment deliberately

dumbs down and corrupts your youth.1

There was a day when you could rely on the duciary posture o your advisors, counselors, and proessionals. Today that would be naïve

and hazardous. Every day the litany o unconstitutional abuses con-

tinues unabated. Every day sel-destructive polices extend their reach.

Every day it grows darker. Every day the debts grow larger; they are

already beyond any semblance o reality. 2

The cancer o entitlement mentality has even inected the middle

class. The growing dependence on government handouts ignores thereality that the only assets the government has are yours . To ulll the

growing collective expectations they will increasingly conscate your as-

sets to ulll their ambitions.3

The problem with socialism is that you soon run out o other people’s money.

A Cloud of Spiritual Darkness

As the centroid o geopolitical power on the Planet Earth continues its shit westbound

(abandoning the U.S.), you can also see a cloud o spiritual darkness emerging on your east-

ern shores. Europe, mired in the grip o socialism, is now also discovering the sinister agen-

da—and deadly demographics—o Islam. The Middle East continues to boil, continually threatening lives everywhere. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

America likewise has now become the victim o a leadership committed to everything

we once abhorred. Every time I pass a military cemetery I’m reminded that it is lled with

the bodies o patriots who gave their lives ghting everything our current leadership is now

committed to.

Your ounders worked very hard to avoid the instabilities o a “democracy”: it was liberty

and reedom that garnered their sacrices. It was a constitutional republic they gave us—but

our complacency and apathy has allowed it to get trampled into the dust o myopic expe-

diencies. It is debatable whether it can ever be reestablished. You are now shackled to the

chains o debts that can never be repaid.

[I you don’t have a copy o The Founders’ Bible  on your amily coee table, you prob-

ably have no idea what I’m talking about! Unless you were raised in a military amily you

probably have only supercial generalities regarding our nation’s ounding —and the sacri-

ces that made our reedoms possible. At least

it could give your grandchildren a retrospec-

tive glimpse o the nostalgic dream which will

soon be orgotten, or only treasured as a distant

memory. See the article on page 12.]

The light o reedom is quickly dimming,

and you, too, are now heading into the tyranny

o a police state and the slavery o debt. Both

Washington and Wall Street are desperately try-ing to create the impression o a recovery. They

insist on measuring progress on consumption

(CPI) rather than production. The dierence—

the decit—is debt . America is now the world’s

largest debtor, rantically printing currency

expecting that the oreign banks are oolish ORDER

enough to overlook the eroding values: it’s the “greater ool theory ” on steroids.

A Painful Blessing

That sounds like an oxymoron: how can a blessing be painul? It’s the essential punc-

ture o a delusion, like when a child discovers there’s no Santa Claus. Painul, but essential.

There comes a time when even patriotism can be an obsolete orm o idol worship. When I was in Boy Scouts, it was “God and country”: you didn’t have to choose between the two!

It appears that the time has come when we all need to reocus our personal priorities on

the Kingdom that’s coming: we need to reprioritize our

personal commitments to the Coming King!

There was a time when God clearly blessed America.

However, we then outlawed Him rom our schools and

public places. We allowed our kids to be taught that the

Creation itsel was some kind o cosmic accident . We

shredded the undamentals o lie—delity and mutual commitment—in our marriages and

other relationships. Now we wonder why our kids have no sense o destiny. They can’t even

nd a job.

Has God’s “abandonment wrath” begun? Paul has

given us a litmus test which reveals our status:

Romans 1:18-32, in which He unveils His

specic judgment on any culture that

ails to acknowledge Him as Creator!4

What Is our Remedy for the

Encroaching Darkness?

Throughout the entire

history since Pentecost , small

groups o Biblical believershave been struggling to remain

aithul to the Word o God  but

have been oppressed and persecut-

ed by the local religious establish-

ments .5 Even i all the established

institutions become prostituted

to serve the siren calls o social injustices (and there will be plenty to

deal with!), there remains a powerul alternative: but rst, we strongly

admonish three—in act, our—steps (three are amiliar; the ourth is a

surprise):

1) Get serious about your personal commitment to the Coming King! Jesus is not a “concept,” a worthwhile tradition, or a comort-

able compromise in a sea o alternatives: He is real, alive and will soon

be coming to take His Throne, an appointment established beore the

oundation o the world.

2) Repair your Biblical illiteracy ! Get into a weekly study group

committed to the exposition o that supernatural book which may have

been gathering dust on your bookshel.

3) I you’re really serious, commit yoursel to an aggressive spiri-

tual growth program with others like-minded. The Internet has now

made all o man’s knowledge only a ew clicks away! And the spiritual

resources now available are lie-changing: the Koinonia Institute is a

unique think-tank with committed members anxious to meet you.

But there’s another opportunity entirely. “Irreducible complex-

ity” is an insight developed by Michael Behe.6 In its most basic orm,

ministry is composed o three essential components: 1) Education, 2)

Experience, and 3) Enablement.

The Koinonia Institute has been providing an eective alterna-

tive or the rst two components. The three parallel avenues o study

leading to the Gold Medallion are innovative and eective, thanks to

the Internet. Practicums and ministry opportunities also address the

second component.

It is that third component, “Enablement,” which usually involveseither joining a Christian organization, or organizing the personal sup-

port to join an organization that requires it. However, there is now a

unique alternative: becoming part o a network o independent, indi-

vidual “spiritual entrepreneurs” working undercover within the coming

spiritual darkness.7

4) I you are really, really serious, and are willing to commit your-

Institute, you can also embark on a sel-nancing program to establish

your own personal ministry as the Lord leads.

For the truly committed, the Koinonia Missionary Fellowship

(“KMF”) now oers a unique approach to “Enablement.” It is a “club within a club”: a sel-governing gathering o lie members committed

as “underground” Ambassadors or our Coming King. Each partici-

pant can participate in a combined parsonage pool which reimburses

expenses in proportion to what he has put in the pool; he has his

“own skin in the game.” (This pool is also augmented by support-

ing donations external to the membership. Only earnings o the pool

are employed: the assets remain in the ministry in perpetuity.) The

participant is supervised by his own peers (not a remote headquarters

edom). He is accountable to his own Personal Advisory Board,

individually selected rom members o the KMF. Check it out: www.

 DECLARING OUR INDEPENDENCE

When in the Course o human events, it becomes necessary or one people to dissolve the po-litical bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers o

the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws o Nature and o Nature’s God

entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions o mankind requires that they should declare

the causes which impel them to the separation.

The summer o 1776 was, in the words o Founder  Thomas Paine, one o the “times

that try men’s souls.” From the end o the Seven Years’ War in 1763 to the Declaration o Independence, the relationship o the American colonies with Great Britain had deterio-

rated severely.

An Increasing Tax Burden

In 1764, to help oset its huge war debt and the expenses o running the colonies, the

English Parliament imposed the Sugar Act , which increased the duties on imported sugar,

by John Peterson,

Publisher of TheFounders’ Bible

THE SIGNERS OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE WERE CERTAIN THAT WARWOULD BRING UNTOLD SUFFERING AND SACRIFICE AT EVERY LEVEL, BUT THERE

textiles, coee, wines, and dyes. That was ollowed by the Currency

Act , the Stamp Act o 1765, the Quartering Act , the Declaratory

Act o 1766, and the Townshend Acts o 1767, all o which imposed

heavy colonial taxes on imports and hardships on the citizens, which

led to a groundswell o protests, boycotts, and simmering violence. On March 5, 1770, the Boston Massacre occurred as a mob ha-

rassed British soldiers, who then red their muskets pointblank into

the crowd, killing ve and injuring six.

To protest the Tea Act o 1773, which gave the British East India

Company a monopoly to trade tea in America, the colonists reused to

pay any import duties on the tea onboard the British ship Dartmouth,

and on December 16 dumped all the tea into the Boston harbor in

what has been called the Boston Tea Party .

An angry Parliament retaliated with the rst o the Coercive or

Intolerable Acts in 1774, placing Massachusetts under military rule

and virtually ending any sel-rule by the colonists. Many colonists saw

this as a direct violation o the British Constitution and a threat to all

their liberties.

The Loss of Liberty

By the time the First Continental Congress met in September

1774, the American colonies had been orced to endure taxation

without representation, searches and seizures without probable cause,

the conscation o rearms, and the long list o other legal oenses

detailed in the Declaration that Parliament had let unresolved.

Yet even when armed confict in the Revolutionary War broke out

on April 19, 1775, with “the shot heard around the world ” on Lexington Green in Mas-sachusetts, ew colonists desired complete independence rom Great Britain. Most were

merely ghting or their rights as subjects o the British Crown.

Things changed over the course o the next year, however, as Britain’s great military

orce attempted to crush the rebellion. In August 1775, the king declared that the American

subjects were “engaged in open and avowed rebellion.”

Then in February 1776, Parliament passed the Prohibitory Act , which established a

all these actions is perhaps best refected in the words spoken by Thomas Jeerson on No-

vember 29, 1775:

Believe me, dear Sir: there is not in the British empire a man who more cordially loves a union with Great Britain than I do. But, by the

God that made me, I will cease to exist beore I

yield to a connection on such terms as the British

Parliament propose; and in this, I think I speak

the sentiments o America.

Quest for Independence

In October 1775, to quell the rebellion,

King George III ordered the enlargement o the

royal army and navy. When this news reached

America in January 1776, it propelled the cause

or independence and led many colonists to abandon all hopes o reconciliation. In May,

the Congress learned that the king had negotiated treaties with German states to hire mer-

cenaries to ght in America. His actions convinced many Americans that England was now

treating them as oreigners.

We hold these truths to be

principles and organizing its powers in such orm,as to them shall seem most likely to eect their

Saety and Happiness.

Cutting Ties With Britain

 When the Second Continental Congress

rst met in May 1775, King George III had not

replied to the petition or redress o grievances

sent by the First Continental Congress.

Thereore, the Congress gradually took on

the responsibilities o a national government, and one by one began to cut the colonies’ ties

to Britain. In June 1775, it established a continental currency as well as the Continental

Army , appointing George Washington as its commander-in-chie , and in July created a

post oce or the “United Colonies.”

The Privateering Resolution, passed in March

1776, allowed the colonists to arm vessels topatrol and deend against “the enemies o these

United Colonies.” On April 6, 1776, American

ports were opened to commerce with other na-

tions—an action that cut the economic ties dic-

tated by Parliament’s Navigation Acts.

Uniting the ColoniesBy mid-May 1776, eight American colonies had decided they would support indepen-

dence, but Maryland , Pennsylvania , New York , New Jersey , and Delaware resisted. On

May 15, 1776, Congress passed a set o resolutions drated by  John Adams that authorized

the colonies to set up state governments independent o the Crown, and several did.

This was an emphatic act o sovereignty , and as such it necessitated a ormal declara-

tion o independence rom the Crown. Four o the middle colonies voted against it, and

...it propelled the cause for independence and

led many colonists to

abandon all hopes of

reconciliation.

the Maryland delegation walked out in protest. Also on May 15, the Virginia Convention

passed a resolution that “the delegates appointed to represent this colony in General Con-

gress be instructed to propose to that respectable body to declare the United Colonies ree

Richard Henry Lee o  Virginia presented his resolution or

to be, ree and independent States, that they are absolved

rom all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political

There were still some stalwart delegates, however, who

wished to pursue the path o reconciliation with Britain,

and some threatened to leave Congress i the resolution was

sional declaration o independence was consolidated among the colonies.

The Committee o Five, composed o John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jeer-son, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman, instructed Jeerson to write the rst drat.

Jeerson’s most immediate sources were his own drat o

the preamble o the Constitution o Virginia and George

Mason’s Virginia Declaration o Rights, and he presented

his “air” drat to Benjamin Franklin and John Adams or

their considerations and amendments prior to the presen-

tation o a “rough draught” to the committee. They then

presented this document to the Congress on June 28.

The Declaration is Officially Adopted: July 4,

1776

On July 2, 1776, ater a great deal o wrangling and a powerul speech by John Adams,

the resolution o independence was adopted with twelve armative votes and one absten-

tion.

With this, the colonies ocially severed political ties with Great Britain. On July 4, thenal wording o the Declaration o Independence was approved and sent to the printer or

publication. Then, at last, church bells rang

out over Philadelphia declaring the Declara-

tion had been ocially adopted. Riders were

sent in all directions with the news, and in

many places it was celebrated with shouts

and processions, with the ring o guns andthe ringing o bells. Beore long, the Decla-

ration was read to audiences and reprinted

in newspapers across the thirteen states.

The Cost of Freedom

The people understood the enormous cost o the step they were taking. John Adams

wrote to his wie regarding the meaning o his own signature on the document o reedom:

I am well aware o the toil, and blood, and treasure, that it will cost us to maintain this

declaration. . . . I can see that the end is more than worth all the means, and that posterity

will triumph in that day’s transaction.

He and his ellow signers o the Declaration were certain that war would bring untold

suering and sacrice at every level, leaving empty chairs at amily tables, widows, atherless

children, grieving mothers and athers.

But there was, as Adams notes, a prize worthy o giving their all—Liberty —and there

would be no king to stand in the way o it.

pparently the former United States military’s policy o “don’t ask,

don’t tell” has been replaced with a new one. In the modern

world where people “despise good and love evil,”1 it is just

ne or a soldier to celebrate a homosexual liestyle, but an-

other soldier could ace disciplinary actions i he were to share his

Christian aith.

On May 1, news sources reported that soldiers could be pros-

ecuted or sharing that aith, up to and including court-martial. The

Department o Deense later claried their statement saying that

that no troops or chaplains are being court-martialed or evange-lism.

While explaining that evangelism is not a punishable oense,

the DOD spokesman said that proselytizing is. To “proselytize,”

dened as “to induce someone to convert to one’s aith,” would be

considered a violation o the Uniorm Code o Military Justice.

Dening “proselytizing” as a punishable oense has caused a

great deal o concern and conusion among military chaplains andthe troops. Any sort o coercive conversion to any religion is already

a violation o the First Amendment , so why was this rule put in

place? What is the distinction between “evangelizing” and “prosely-

tizing”?

This latest directive seems to be part o a trend to incrementally

marginalize a soldier’s aith, particularly Christian aith, rom military

lie. Another example o this margin-

alization is the ongoing struggle or

Christian chaplains to pray in public

settings in the name o Jesus, which is

the only way we can come beore God the Father .

 American military leaders didn’t

always eel this way. Between 1941

and 1945, the American Bible Society

printed and distributed six million

New Testaments to men and women

in the armed services. The books

carried in the fylea letters rom the

commanding ocers and ocers o

various military units. One o those

commanders was the Commander

in Chie o the Armed Forces, Presi-

dent Franklin Delano Roosevelt . In

today’s new military, this letter could

be construed as a violation o military

policy.

God in the “Brother’s War”

During the American Civil War , Christ was very much a part o army lie. In May

1864 in a letter to the Rev. Robert J. Harp, the Superintendent o the Southwestern Depart-

ment Soldiers’ Tract Association, it was reported that,

The (Conederate) army was in the midst o a most extensive revival at the beginning o the

month. Protracted meetings were being held in almost every brigade; thousands o our soldiers

were thronging our rude camp altars, hundreds were giving their hearts to God, and scores

were nightly asking or certicates o Church membership.

The report also stated that about 300 men and ocers were baptized in one day

alone, with over 2,000 being saved in one week. Many times, the only thing that stopped

the church services were attacks by the Union Army . During these times, the Conederate

troops “literally went rom the altar to their entrenchments—rom their knees to the battle

with their oes—still singing the songs o Zion and supplicating the throne o grace as they

surrounded the res o the bivouac, or waited to receive the re o the oe.”2

The Union (Northern) Army also ound comort in Christ on the battleeld. This is

not to say that Christ was central to a typical soldier’s lie during the entire confict. In theearly stages o the war, it seemed as i religion had been let at home. Many soldiers, away

rom home or the rst time, were oten tempted to “make some oolishness,” as one soldier

put it. Believing Christians in the eld were oten conronted with proanity , gambling ,

drunkenness, sexual licentiousness, and petty thievery .

This attitude began to change as the true horror o the war began to sink in. Ater the

decisive campaigns at Gettysburg , Vicksburg , and Chattanooga in 1863, revivals became a

regular eature o Union army lie. By this time, veteran soldiers began seeking support in

religion.

In the Army o the Potomac, a great religious revival appeared during the winter o

1863–64. Numerous brigades erected churches and chapel tents or prayer meetings. Gen-

eral McAllister said he had never witnessed a better religious eeling among the men. And

a reporter or a religious magazine thought the “piety o the Union army would win the

 whole nation to Christ.”3

The War of the “First July Fourth”

Some historians have argued that the American Revolutionary War was the dening

moment in the history o  American Christianity . During that period, Enlightenment ideas

and evangelical Christian values combined to produce what sociologist  Seymour Martin

Lipset has called “the rst new nation.”The Revolutionary War was unique in mod-

ern history in that it was not over territory or

spoil, it was a revolt to which republican and Bib-

lical belies fowed together and infuenced each

other. During the Revolutionary period many o

the emphases o the First Great Awakening were

secularized and incorporated into the abric o the new nation. During this period in Amer-

ica, Protestant ministers preached that God had chosen America or a special purpose.

This ethos o striving to maintain God’s avor on the colonial war eort became a

central part o the Continental Army ’s lie. Putting God rst,

even in war, became a central precept or General George

Washington, the Commander in Chie o

the Continental Army. On July 9, 1776,

Washington issued an order rom his head-

quarters in New York to appoint chaplainsto every regiment. In the order, he wrote:

… The General hopes and trusts, that every

ocer and man will endeavour so to live,

and act, as becomes a Christian Soldier,

deending the dearest Rights and Liberties o

his country.4

Even with this order, chaplains had

one o the most demanding jobs in the

Continental Army. Historian Charles Roys-

ter , proessor o history at Louisiana State

University had written that “… proanity,

drunkenness, neglect o the Sabbath, and

This ethos of striving tomaintain God’s favor

on the colonial war

effort became a central

 part of the Continental

 Army’s life.

disrespect or the clergy were widespread

among Continental soldiers.” This contrast-

ed sharply with the high moral ground upon

which the war was being ought, and Chris-

tian Revolutionaries deplored the contrast.5

Other Revolutionary War generals also

believed that religious devotion was an es-

sential element toward good discipline and

enlisted the chaplains to help them in their

eorts to oster unit cohesion. Unit com-

manders required soldiers to attend church

services. One punishment or absence was

digging up stumps.

The Key to Military Success

Washington himsel believed that not only was religious devotion a key to military dis-

cipline, he also believed that it was the key to the success o their endeavor. In Valley Forge,

despite their hunger and the lack o adequate cloth-

ing, Washington ordered all able-bodied men who

were not on duty to participate in worship services. He and his ocers also attended these services. This

was one o Washington’s written prayers during the

 winter at Valley Forge:

Almighty God, and most merciul Father, who didst

command the children o Israel to oer a daily sacrice

to Thee, that thereby they might gloriy and praise Thee or Thy protection both night and

day; receive, O Lord, my morning sacrice which I now oer up to Thee. I beseech Thee, my

sins, remove them rom Thy presence, as ar as the east is rom the west, and accept o me or

the merits o Thy Son, Jesus Christ, that when I come into Thy temple, and compass Thine

altar, my prayers may come beore Thee as incense; and as Thou wouldst hear me calling

upon Thee in Thy Word, that it may be wisdom, righteousness, reconciliation and peace to

the saving o my Soul in the day o the Lord Jesus.6

Washington also rec-

ognized that a soldier’sbehavior mattered, not

only to good military

discipline, but to God

 Himself.

Congress also understood the importance o giving God His proper place in the con-

fict. On May 8, 1778, Congress ordered all ministers to read an assessment o the war

rom their pulpits. The letter repeated reerences to the Almighty and their reliance on

His protection. The paper read in part, “Our dependence was not upon man,” Congress

asserted, “it was upon Him who hath commanded us to love our enemies, and to rendergood or evil”; our success has been “so peculiarly marked, almost by direct interposition o

Providence, that not to eel and acknowledge His protection would be the height o impi-

ous gratitude.”7

The surviving sermons rom this time indicated a ne line that chaplains had to tread.

They had to preach sermons that would build the soldiers’ aith that their Cause was both

winnable and right, and they had to oster courage in the ace o both suering and combat

and encourage the good behavior that were the hallmarks o the upright Christian and disci-

plined soldier.

These two conficting priorities sometimes

put chaplains in a dicult position at times.

On Thanksgiving Day , 1777, one Continental

army unit, which had not been paid since Au-

gust, heard a sermon where the chaplain prepared a text giving advice to soldiers using the

words o  John the Baptist . In the sermon, John was quoted as saying, “Do violence to no

man, neither accuse any alsely …”8 The chaplain conveniently let o the rest o the verse,

to which the soldiers happily nished, “And be content with your wages!”

That chaplains were such important part o military strategy was part and parcel o

what dierentiated the Continental army rom the British. The Revolutionary command

made sure that the Colonial soldiers knew what they were ghting or. “The ate o unborn

millions will now depend, under God, on the Courage and Conduct o this Army,” wrote

Washington. He also recognized that a soldier’s behavior mattered, not only to good mili-

tary discipline, but to God Himsel. On August 3, 1776, rom his headquarters in New  York, George Washington issued this General Order :

… The General is sorry to be inormed that the oolish, and wicked practice, o proane cursing

and swearing is growing into ashion; he hopes the ocers will, by example, as well as infu-

ence, endeavour to check it, and that both they, and the men will refect, that we can have

little hopes o the blessing o Heaven on our Arms, i we insult it by our impiety, and olly …

Congress also understood

the importance of giving

God His proper place in

the conict.

Evidence of Divine Providence

Through the years o struggle, it did seem as i God’s Hand

was truly on the Colonial Cause. The 16 months between July

1776 in New York and concluding in October 1777 at Saratoga

include many examples o what many Americans would believe tobe o Divine Providence. Among them were the night the ground

expectedly roze between Trenton and Princeton allowing the Con-

tinental Army escape the annihilation British General Cornwallis

had planned or it the ollowing morning, and the time Washing-

ton himsel survived a hail o bullets and cannon re when he was

caught between his own troops and the Redcoats at the Assunpink

Creek Bridge during the second Battle o Trenton.

Casualties of War

One sad note to the Revolutionary War was that the military

leader’s attention to enlisting God in the cause and in the soldier’s

daily lie did not seem to carry through into civilian lie. In reality,

the war had the opposite eect.

The issue o the Revolution itsel had badly divided Americans,

both inside and outside the churches. Opinion ranged rom enthu-siastic endorsement o the Revolution by most Congregationalists,

Presbyterians and Baptists to non-participation on moral grounds by

the Quakers, Mennonites and other Christian pacists.

The confict blunted the religious conscience o a generation o

Americans and encouraged many to become apathetic toward Chris-

tianity.

The ebb and fow o this country’s aith in God seems to ol-low cyclical patterns. During times o prosperity there is a alling

away rom aith only to be brought back to God during times o

crisis.

We need to ollow the same advice Washington and other mili-

tary leaders ollowed in 2 Chronicles 7:14 and “seek His ace.”

That means all o us in “God’s army .”

he last commandment of Jesus beore His ascension was or His disciples to “go into all

the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”  1 How seriously should we personally

take this command today? Is this command somehow only limited to those who eel

they have the git o evangelism? What needs to be said, under-

stood, and believed or a person to be born again?

For salvation, Man must rst understand the existence and char-

acter o God, then the purpose and power o the Bible, the person o

Jesus Christ , and the nature o Man. This awareness prepares Man

or the message o the Gospel. Being conronted with a holy and just

God should cause sinul Man, who is deserving o God’s judgment, tonaturally seek a way o salvation.

The Bible tells us that believing in the Gospel requires hearing the

Gospel. The apostle Paul  wrote to the Roman Christians saying,

How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And

how shall they believe in Him o whom they have not heard? And how

shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they

are sent? As it is written: “How beautiul are the eet o those who preach

the gospel o peace, Who bring glad tidings o good things!” 2

Sadly, the percentage o the world that is hearing the Christian

Gospel today is getting less and less. Preaching is one o the simplest

orms o  verbal communication. Where teaching can be dened

as “explanation,” thus sometimes requiring substantial preparation,

EVERYONE WHO HAS CALLED ON THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THEIR

OWN SALVATION NOW HAS AN IRREVOCABLE CALLING UPON THEIR NEW LIFE,

WHICH COMPELS THEM TO TAKE THE GOSPEL TO THE WORLD AROUND THEM.

preaching is simply “declaration.” Paul instructed the Corinthian Church, “For since, inthe wisdom o God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through

the oolishness o the message preached to save those who believe.”3 For example, i you dis-

covered that your local superstore was having a one-day sale on an item that previously was

too expensive to consider, your natural response to the discovery o this good news would be

to tell as many o your riends as possible, so they could enjoy the benet with you. How

much more important is the Gospel message beore a

world lost in darkness and without hope?

The Apostle Paul then points out that every Chris-

tian has been given the “ministry o reconciliation.”

Now all things are o God, who has reconciled us to Him-

sel through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry o

reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling

the world to Himsel, not imputing their trespasses to them,

and has committed to us the word o reconciliation.4

Thus we can ull the command o the Great Commission by preaching the “word o

reconciliation” to an unbelieving world.

All Christians need to recognize the act that they are no longer to become entangled

in the aairs o this present world, because they have been given citizenship in a heavenly

and communicate the messages rom our ruling King, Jesus Christ, to others. How can we

eectively accomplish this task?

The Discovery of God

The English author C. S. Lewis wrote, “Christian-ity, i alse, is o no importance, and i true, o innite

importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately

important.”6 The Christian aith is NOT a simple, pri-

vate experience o personal interpretations or impressions. It is a serious, public exhibition

o a worldview that is based on a belie system that has a oundation o truth that can be

examined by an enquiring world.

Christianity does not ask its ollowers to take a blind leap o aith into the intellectual

abyss, but rather presents a perectly rational response to the evidence surrounding us, with-

in the world o science and through insightul discoveries rom the Bible.

The Bible tells us that or salvation, Man must rst understand the existence and char-

acter o God. Thereore, the road to the salvation o mankind begins with the exploration o

the ultimate truth o the existence o God .

The beginning o a person’s reconciliation

with God is their recognition o God.

The argument or and against the

existence o God has raged or ages, with

both sides declaring victory but rarely to

the converting o their counterpart. To

prove the existence o God, an under-

standing is needed that comes rom an

“aggregate o thoughts” knit together with

“summary logic.” I call it the “algorithm o complex theology .”

Simply stated, it is the idea that many

dierent observations, when consolidated,

can yield a unied conclusion.

There are ve classic philosophical ar-

guments or proving the existence o God:

 from our ruling

 King, Jesus Christ,

1. The Ontological

Argument

The Ontological  Argument is

based on the widespread intuitive

knowledge o the existence o God

within every culture. It ocuses on our

internal witness. It argues that once we

mentally grasp the concept o God, we

can see that God’s non-existence is im-

possible. In other words, i you believe

in the necessity o God, then you must

believe in the existence o God. Ques-

tions raised by this approach include,

“Why does mankind universally concern itsel with the existence o God i he does not ex-

ist?” “Why do I believe in a supernatural or spiritual realm?” “Why do people who say they

don’t believe in God still ask or prayer ?”

2. The Cosmological Argument

The Cosmological  Argument seeks to prove the ex-

istence o God rom the act that the universe exists. Thebasis o this argument is built upon the observation that

the universe is nite—it had a beginning—and that it

came into being through something or someone. This is

also reerred to as the “First Cause Argument.” It ocuses

on the principle o the “rst mover.” That is, or every ac-

tion there must be a reaction or or every reaction there

must be a preceding action.

3. The Teleological Argument

The Teleological Argument seeks to prove the existence o God rom the act that the

universe is ordered. This is also reerred to as the “Argument rom Design.” It is based on

the principle that i we see design, there must be a designer (God), because we see “design”

that iners “purpose.” The study o design in both the cosmos and in lie systems reveals the

wonders o both the Macro Universe and the Micro Universe. For more on the Teleologi-

cal Argument or the existence o God, you should check out the “Beyond Series”7 by Dr.

Chuck Missler .

4. The Moral Argument

The Moral Argument seeks to prove the exis-tence o God rom the inherent nature o morality

within mankind. It asks many tough questions re-

garding the basis o Universal Morality . I morality

consists o an ultimately authoritative set o com-

mands, where can these commands have come rom

but a commander that has ultimate authority ? The apostle Paul warned the Roman Church

that all mankind stand guilty beore God because “what may be known o God is maniest

in them, or God has shown it to them.”8

5. The Religious Experience Argument

The Religious Experience Argument seeks to prove the existence o God by human

experience with the supernatural realm. The ocus o this approach is the idea that one can

only perceive that which exists, and so God must exist because there are those that have

experienced him. While religious experiences themselves can only constitute direct evidence

o God’s existence or those ortunate enough to have them, the act that there are many people who testiy to having had such experiences constitutes indirect evidence o God’s

Therefore, the road

to the salvation of

mankind begins withthe exploration of the

ultimate truth of the

existence of God.

existence, even to those who have not had

such experiences themselves.

 Although you cannot completely,

empirically  prove or disprove the existence

o God using logic alone, we can certainly use the inormation available to us to guide

those that are blind to the glorious light o

the Gospel into the direction o truth, so

they might seek the truth or themselves.

Otentimes, the best use o Christian apol-

ogetics is to unseat the condence o the

unbeliever in their aulty world view, to the

point that they seek a better answer or the

questions acing them concerning the purpose o their own lie. In the end Jesus said,

No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up

at the last day. It is written in the prophets, “And they shall all be taught

by God.” Thereore everyone who has heard and learned rom the Father

comes to Me.9

Nevertheless, everyone who has called on the name o Jesus Christ

or their own salvation now has an irrevocable calling upon their new

lie, which compels them to take the Gospel to the world around them.

Remember, it is a spiritual battle. With great opportunity comes great

opposition, so don’t be surprised when the eort to share the Gospel

becomes dicult.

Ater all, it’s a matter o lie and death to those waiting to hear yourmessage o reconciliation.

35 /  UPDATE  / JULY 2013 COVER CONTENTS ORDER

It blesses us to report that Nancy Missler is on the road to recovery. For a current update on

Nan you can go to our website at www.kingshighway.org . July is the month that we cel-

ebrate reedom in America. Our passion and purpose at The King’s

High Way Ministries is to see many Christians “reed” and “trans-

ormed” through our books and Bible study resources.

In order to give Nan more time to heal, The King’s High Way Min-

istries chose an article on “emotional reedom” that she originally wrote

in the late ’90s. We pray that it encourages you.

* * *You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you ree.

 John 8:32

What does this really mean? Renewing our minds is dened as

“truth” when our words and our deeds match and become one. Jesus,

o course, is the Truth because He is the Word that became the Deed.

So, what I believe this Scripture says is that the more intimately and

ully we know Jesus, the more reedom we will experience.God loves us so very much that He wants us reed — reed rom

our selves; reed rom others’ reactions, reed rom our circumstances,

and reed rom the enemy’s infuence in our innermost man. This

reedom comes only by constantly renewing our minds—moment by

moment putting o all the things in our fesh (our soul and our body)

that are “not o aith” and putting on Christ.

GOD LOVES US SO VERY MUCH THAT HE WANTS US FREED—AND THIS FREEDOM

COMES ONLY BY CONSTANTLY RENEWING OUR MINDS—MOMENT BY MOMENT

PUTTING OFF ALL THE THINGS IN OUR FLESH THAT ARE “NOT OF FAITH” AND

PUTTING ON CHRIST.

I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered (or reed) me rom all my ears.

Psalm 34:4

The American Heritage Dictionary says the word “ reedom” means a state o

independence or the condition o being  reed

rom outside infuences. Interest-

ingly enough, that’s the same denition the dictionary gives or the word “deliver-

ance”—to set ree.

The reedom that I write about in my book Be Ye

Transormed discusses the process o healing and renew-

al. This process is made up o our moment-by-moment

aith choices and is called sanctication. Sanctication

is choosing to give over to God anything that’s not o

aith, so that His Lie can come orth rom our hearts.

Scripture tells us that i we are believers, Jesus has

delivered us rom the power o darkness. Read Colos-

sians 1:13, John 10:27-29 and 1 John 5:18. What is

necessary, however, and what we are ocusing on here,

is reedom rom our ears, our angers, depression, bitterness, guilt, etc., that the

power o sin (“law o sin” in our body, Romans 7:23) has used in all o our lives

to control and cripple us. This reedom comes only rom our moment-by-

moment choices and rees us rom the

baggage o lie that we carry.

An Example: What Went Wrong?

A young man that I have known

or years, and one who loved The Way o

Agape, attended a healing and deliver-

ance service. Aterwards, he boasted o

being totally delivered rom drug abuse.

Three months later, however, he was ul-

ly back into a lie laced with drug abuse.

I saw him one day and asked him,

God knows the

 perfect way and the

 perfect timing to

reveal “truth.” We

 just need to be

willing to hear it and

deal with it. God,

then, will do the rest.

“Tom, what happened? You said

you were totally reed. What

 went wrong?” “Nan,” he said,

“we’re all looking or the easy way

out (to be delivered instantly).”He went on, “There’s no easy way

out. It’s only our constant choices

that will allow us to remain ree.”

 A pastor o a large church

in Caliornia points out, “It’s the

fesh that we need reedom rom.

We can’t cast it out—we need to

die to it. So, it’s our own deci-

sion, our own choice, and our own responsibility to stay ree.

I could easily stop choosing God’s Way today and in a very short time, I would rell all

o “lie’s baggage” (hidden chambers) that God has so magnicently emptied over the jour-

ney o my Christian lie. And, I’d be right back where I started rom.

For i, ater they have escaped the pollutions o the world through the knowledge o the Lord

and Savior, Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

2 Peter 2:20

Example: “I Had That Message Once”

I had lunch with a dear riend, several years ago, who had done this very thing. She

had orgotten to make moment-by-moment aith choices, and she had allowed the enemy

to “rebuild” old strongholds that had once been destroyed and cleansed. My riend had be-

come discouraged and had begun to doubt God’s aithulness, because she was again experi-

encing things she had thought she dealt with years ago.

What she didn’t realize was that because she had stopped “taking every thought cap-

tive” and she had stopped “making aith choices,” she was the one allowing new ungodly

thoughts to enter back into her once-cleansed hidden chambers. So, it wasn’t God who

was unaithul. Transormation is a process that we will be in or the rest o our lives and,

unortunately, there’s just no room or coasting—it’s a moment-by-moment aith walk.

Begin With Small StepsSo, begin with small steps. Take one thing at a time. Don’t think God will cleanse all

your hidden chambers over a period o days. How many years has it taken you to ll them?

Give God time to expose and empty them in His Way and in His timing. You must just be

“willing” to deal with the things that He brings up and He will do the rest.

The exposing and the cleansing o our innermost man is God’s responsibility! Our

responsibility is simply to give Him permission to do so. I we have done that, then believe

me, He will do His part.

Example: Have No Fear

We also needn’t be araid o how or when God will reveal these hidden things to us.

We simply must trust Him completely, knowing that it’s His Will or us to be reed.

A precious sister at a weekend seminar a ew years ago was araid o opening hersel

up to God because o some extremely painul things that had happened to her in the past.

Ruth was terried, but dared to trust God enough to give Him her ear and also her ull

permission to search her hidden chambers and reveal whatever He wanted to.

That night, Ruth’s roommate awoke to nd Ruth sobbing and crying out in her sleep.

The roommate immediately got up out o bed and quietly came over to comort her. How-

ever, when she got to Ruth’s bed, she heard Ruth sweetly saying over and over, “Jesus, Jesus,

 Jesus.”

The roommate was so moved and so touched, that she knelt down beside her and be-

gan to pray and intercede or her. In the morning, when the two o them compared what

had happened, Ruth said she knew that God had done a marvelous work within her during

the night. She knew in her spirit that even while she slept, God had emptied some o the

hurtul things in her hidden chambers.

When she got home rom the retreat, her husband even noticed that something was

dierent. He said her countenance was radiant and that he could tell she had let go o some“baggage” she had been carrying around or years.

So, we don’t need to be araid o how or when God will reveal some o the painul

things o the past. We simply must trust Him enough to know that since He has made us,

He knows the perect timing and perect way to do it. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “God has not

given us the spirit o ear, but o power and love and o a sound mind.”

I’m convinced that we all desperately need this

deep inner cleansing and healing in order to “know”

God intimately. By this, I simply mean we need to

allow the Spirit o God the reedom to search the

deep, unchartered recesses o our soul and bring to light all that needs to be dealt with.

Now, we don’t have to be cleansed o “all” the things in our hidden chambers beore we

can “know” God. That’s not at all what I mean. It’s going to take us a lietime in order to

do that and we still won’t have gotten rid o all that’s there.

What I am reerring to is being obedient to God’s Spirit, and as He reveals something

to us, we must immediately deal with it and give it over to Him. And the sooner we deal

with it, the reer we will be…it’s “The Key” to reedom.

With each thing that we hand over to Jesus, and with each hidden chamber that is

emptied, we’ll experience a closer intimacy with Him and more reedom to be who we really

are.

Truly, i we know the truth, the truth will set us ree.

God knows the perect way and the perect timing to reveal “truth.” We just need to

be willing to hear it and deal with it. God, then, will do the rest.

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itsel against the knowledge

o God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience o Christ; and having in

a readiness to revenge [deal with] all disobedience....

2 Corinthians 10:5-6

Truly, if we know the

truth, the truth will set us free.
