EASTER SUNDAY ~ Early Easter morning, while it was still dark, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She
saw the stone removed and ran to tell the disciples: “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t
know where they put him.” Peter and John ran to the tomb, went in, and saw the burial cloths there. The gospel
says simply that they “saw and believed.” Surely this is one of the most simple and yet most profound
declarations of faith. They “saw and believed.” It is even more profound because the very next sentence of the gospel tells us:
“For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” Is it possible to see, to believe, to trust and yet
not fully know? This is in fact the journey of faith. Does anyone ever fully know? Is it possible that we can understand, especially
the great mysteries of faith, so fully that there is nothing more to learn, to know, to appreciate? No doubt it is the ‘know it all’
who perhaps knows less than the person of ‘simple faith’. Or to say it in another way, there are many ways to know. Some know
with the mind, but have little connection to the heart. Some know and believe fully with the heart, but do not understand, or
even have a confused or erroneous understanding. They just believe. The mature and fully formed ‘Catholic knowing’ is to know
in the spirit of the shema prayer: to know and to love the Lord “with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your
strength.” The Easter testimony of the Scripture reveals an incredible experience in the empty tomb, an equally incredible
response of faith, and hints at the road ahead. We are to spend a life of learning, and growing, and appreciating, and coming to
know. The disciples ‘saw and believed’ then spent the rest of their lives growing in their understanding and preaching what they
believed. This is the same journey we are invited to make as today’s disciples of Jesus, our Risen Lord! Alleluia!

DOMINGO DE PASCUA ~ La mañana temprana de Pascua, estando todavía oscuro, fue María Magdalena al sepulcro. Vio removida la piedra que lo cerraba y corrió a decir a los discípulos: "Se han llevado del sepulcro al Señor y no sabemos dónde lo habrán puesto”. Corrieron Pedro y Juan al sepulcro, entraron y miraron los lienzos
puestos en el suelo. El Evangelio simplemente dice que ellos "vieron y creyeron". Ciertamente ésta es una de las declaraciones de fe más simples pero más profundas. “Vieron y creyeron". Es aún más profundo porque la frase siguiente del evangelio nos dice: "Porque hasta entonces no habían entendido las Escrituras, según las cuales Jesús debía resucitar de entre los muertos”. ¿Es posible ver, creer, confiar y aún no entender? Este es de hecho el camino de la fe. ¿Existe alguien que sepa y conozca completamente todo? ¿Es posible que podamos comprender, especialmente los grandes misterios de la fe, tan plenamente que no hay nada más que aprender, que saber, que apreciar? No cabe duda de que el ’sabelo todo’ tal vez conozca menos que la persona de ‘fe simple’. Mejor dicho, hay muchas maneras de saber. Algunos conocen con la mente, pero tienen poca conexión con el corazón. Algunos saben y creen plenamente con el corazón, pero no entienden, incluso tienen una comprensión confusa o errónea. Sólo creen. El ‘conocimiento Católico’ maduro y plenamente formado es conocer en el espíritu de la oración del shema: conocer y amar al Señor "con todo tu corazón, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas". La Escritura revela una experiencia increíble en la tumba vacía, una respuesta igualmente increíble de la fe, y pistas sobre el camino por delante. Debemos pasar una vida aprendiendo, creciendo, apreciando, y llegando a conocer. Los discípulos ‘vieron y creyeron’ y luego pasaron el resto de sus vidas creciendo en su entendimiento y predicando lo que ellos creían. Este es el mismo camino que estamos invitados a caminar como los discípulos de Jesús de hoy, nuestro Señor Resucitado! ¡Aleluya!
