Economies of Scale:The more that a large company produces, the lower their costs are, and the more $$ they make.

Homogenization:Things becoming more alike.

Cultural homogenization is when cultures begin to ‘blend together’, in a sense.

Cultural Assimilation:When one culture becomes absorbed into another.

For example: Many First Nations people were assimilated into European culture after the cultures met.

Hybridization:When elements from two things combine to form something new…

Cultural hybridization = elements from two cultures forming something new.

Think: Gangnam Style = Korean/English cultural hybrid.

Marginalization:Pushing to the side (think of the margin, like on a piece of paper).

Cultural marginalization is when a group of people or a culture are excluded or pushed aside…

Think: First Nations history.

Media Concentration:When one big company (think: transnational corporations) owns many different media outlets and controls the message that they send.

Propaganda:

Communication meant to influence people by conveying a very specific viewpoint.

Modern examples of propaganda:

The test will be a mix of multiple choice, short answer, and a bit of matching.

What trend is the cartoon illustrating, and what is the artists perspective on it? (3 marks)

This question is worth 3 marks: 1 for an explanation of the cartoon, 1 for an explanation of the trend it is illustrating, and 1 for your interpretation of the artists perspective.
