About TDU University, BengaluruTDU is an innovaon centered University focused on designing and delivering research, outreach and educaon focused on social transformaon aligned to emerging and futurisc needs. A first of its kind in India, TDU's uniqueness stems from the fact that while the University itself has core strength in Ayurveda-Biology, Clinical Medicine, Medicinal Plants Systemacs, Plant Genomics, Data Sciences, Local Health Tradions, Theorecal Foundaons of Ayurveda, Tradional Knowledge informacs and Manuscriptology, it has instuonal academic relaonships with outstanding knowledge partners in fields like Design (Srish), Ecology and Environment (ATREE), Bioinformacs (IBAB), Conservaon of Coastal, Marine and Mountain Ecosystems (Dakshin Foundaon), Biological Sciences (NCBS-TIFR), Stem Cell Biology (InStem), Inter-disciplinary Studies (NIAS), Cinema (Suchitra), Public health (IPH), Educaon and Pedagogy (Poorna), Medical Research (SJRI) and Policy Studies (Takshashila). Thus, the TDU ecosystem has the capacity to offer programmes that combine subjects related to natural and social sciences, design, cinema, educaon, health sciences, conservaon and fine arts.

About Centre for Conservaon of Medicinal Resources DepartmentThe highlights of the center is Naonal herbarium of Indian medicinal plants with more than 40,000 specimens, represenng, more than 3,800 species, available for studies and reference. This herbarium has been designed as a bio-cultural herbarium to provide informaon on vernacular and botanical names of different medicinal plant species, alongside the details of specific locaons and their collecon. Almost all the nave medicinal plants currently in trade represented in our collecon. A raw drug repository cataloging and curang more than 3,700 samples of traded botanical drugs is an addional feature of our collecon.

Referenced Botanical database on the medicinal botanicals used in the Indian

health tradions linking the botanical names of more than 6,500 medicinal plant species with over 2,00,000 vernacular names in 30 different Indian languages along with tags of different Indian medical systems linked to each botanical enty. It also has Eco-geographic distribuon maps for species of conservaon concern, more than 20,000 medicinal plant images, propagaon methods and pharmacology for selected species.

Ayurveda database: The Ayurveda database captures the Ayurvedic pharmacology of

around 2,000 medicinal plant species and incorporates interpreted “Shlokas” from the classical literature of Ayurveda spanning a period extending over 1500 BC to 1900 AD. This database also incorporates detailed referencing of the classical texts.

Establishment of a network of Medicinal Plants Conservaon Areas (MPCAs): The last 20 years, in collaboraon with the State Forest Departments and Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change of Govt. of India, established 108 Medicinal Plants Conservaon Areas (MPCAs) across 12 states of the country to promote in situ conservaon of wild medicinal plant resources.

About the SponsorsThe Indian Academy of Sciences [IAS] was founded on 27 April, 1934, by Sir C.V. Raman with the main objecve of promong the progress and upholding the cause of science. The major acvies of the Academy includes publicaon of 10 journals on different disciplines of science, conducng science educaon programmes and series of public lectures, organising discussion meengs on wide range of topics, recognising scienfic talents, providing summer research fellowships, etc. The Indian Naonal Science Academy [INSA] was established in January, 1935 with the cause of humanity and naonal welfare. The main acvies of the Academy are publicaon of proceedings, journals and memoirs, and promong liaison between science and humanity through various scienfic meengs, discussions and inter-academies exchange programmes with academies outside India.

The Naonal Academy of Sciences, India [NASI] was founded in the year 1930. The main objecves are to provide a naonal forum for publicaon of research works carried out by Indian sciensts and to provide opportunies for exchange of views among them.

Raonale of the WorkshopPlant Systemacs encompasses tradional taxonomy that includes descripon, idenficaon, nomenclature and classificaon and that has its primary goal, the reconstrucon of phylogeny which infers the evoluonary relaonships between the taxa.

The field of Plant Systemacs has revoluonized the phase of taxonomic/systemac research approaches, i.e., elucidaon of phylogeny of plants through various modern tools and methods integrang both morphology and molecular datasets; ulizaon of a new tool to idenfy the plants based on a piece of DNA sequences; the advent of new modern microscopy.

This two-day lecture workshop is proposed under the auspices of Science Academies' Educaon Programme for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and faculty members to get exposed to the concepts and applicaons in the field of Plant Systemacs.
