PARISH SITES SUBJECTS OF LOCAL

ARTIST’S WORKFive years ago, Nora Danos of Belle Chasse signed up for a painting class. “I had some free time and I love to work with my hands,” she explained. After trying oil, water and acrylic, “I stumbled on pastels and I love it. I love it.”

At the beginning Danos’ paintings were gifts: “When I first started, I would paint and give them away.” But then her son-in-law, Cole Sisung, asked for a painting, and left the subject up to her. Danos’ daughter, Debbie, suggested the Plaquemines Parish Courthouse in Pointe-a-la-Hache. At that point, Danos just needed a photo of the courthouse to work from, but that proved harder than expected. The quest for a suitable photo led her to James Madere, an unofficial parish historian who runs the Facebook page Historic Plaquemines Parish. His immense collection of parish photos had the perfect shot of the courthouse, and Danos started her painting.

The courthouse painting was finished and son-in-law Sisung has the original, however prints and stretched-canvas versions were made. And Danos was ready for her next Plaquemines painting. In all she has finished four parish sites: the courthouse, St. Ann’s Church in Empire, Sigg’s in Port Sulphur and the Blessed Mother of Our Lady of Good Harbor in Buras.

Pastels

A corner of her home is devoted to painting. Lots of natural light shines on her wood easel; it holds special sandpaper that enables the pastel to stick. Plastic cases hold the crayons that are neatly but organically divided into colors— greens, blues, reds, yellows, purples. On the easel is now is her latest work— the iconic lighthouse at Port Eads.

“Sometimes on a rainy afternoon, I’ll just sit here and paint,” she says. “You use your fingers to blend in the pastel and in fine spots, use pastel pencils.”

She has donated several prints of her work to different parish entities— a print of the courthouse hangs at the parish government building and she just recently presented Fr. Gerry Stapleton of St. Patrick Church in Port Sulphur with a print of the Blessed Mother at Our Lady of Good Harbor.

Working with Madere, who supplies photos and suggestions of the subject, she thinks she’ll tackle Pilottown next.To contact Nora Danos about her artwork, call or email her at 504-912-0452 or [email protected].

With only five years of pastel experience, Nora Danos is making a name for herself locally by painting historic parish sites. She is currently working on the Port Eads lighthouse.

With about six hours devoted to her Port Eads piece, local artist Nora Danos has a sketch of the lighthouse with the sky and the top of the lighthouse colored in.

Nora Danos of Belle Chasse stand before her wall of Plaquemines sites she has painted in pastels: the parish courthouse, St. Ann Church, Sigg’s and the Blessed Mother at Our Lady of Good Harbor Cemetery.

Earlier this month, Sheriff Lonnie Greco and members of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) distributed toys to underprivileged children residing throughout Plaquemines Parish as part of the Toys for Smiles program.

On Saturday, December 6, toys were distributed at the Crossroads Church in Belle Chasse, as well as Phoenix High School on the east bank of the parish, and on Sunday, December 7 at St. Patrick’s Church in Port Sulphur. Also, gifts and remaining toys were provided to Padua Community Services residents in Belle Chasse and to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church’s St. Vincent DePaul Society.

The Toys for Smiles program began in 1994 and is sponsored by the Sheriff’s Office. Originally, it was only offered to Belle Chasse children and Padua House residents, but seven years ago it was expanded to include all Plaquemines Parish children. Each Christmas season, volunteers distribute nearly 500 gifts.

Members of the PPSO’s Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA) Alumni Association volunteer their time to shop for the gifts and Sheriff’s Office employees donate their time to hand out the presents. The program is profoundly supported by Sheriff Greco, who is also a contributor and volunteer.

The Parish’s businesses and citizens provide generous contributions to fund the purchase of the many gifts. All donations are strictly designated for the Toys for Smiles program and nearly all of the items are purchased from local businesses.

Over the past seven years, the program has been graciously and magn i f i c en t l y coordinated by PPSO CPA Alumni members Dave and Sue Mallaun.

Sheriff Greco said, “I would like to thank Dave and Sue fo r the countless hours volunteered to make this program such a success and so rewarding.

Words to GROW by!FACTS ABOUT POINSETTIAS,

SELECTION TIPS GIVENWith Christmas only weeks away, the poinsettia will become a featured plant around many homes. While the poinsettia is the symbol of Christmas in many parts of the world today, it was cultivated by the Aztecs of Mexico will before Christianity came to the Western Hemisphere.

The early Indians had practical uses for the poinsettias. A reddish, purple dye was made from the bracts. From the plant sap, the Indians made a medicinal preparation thought to counteract fever. The poinsettia was introduced into the U.S. by our first Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett in 1825. He was a competent botanist who recognized the beauty of the plant and had it planted in his greenhouse in South Carolina. It was eventually distributed to other greenhouse owners across the land.

When selecting a poinsettia, you should follow these tips.

--Select a plant with foliage nearly to the soil. Old plants will have experienced heavy leaf drop.

--The showy portion of the poinsettia, referred to as flowers, are actually modified leaves called “bracts.” These should be large and extend over the lower green leaves. The most popular color is red, but other colors of pink, white and shades in between are available. There are even variegated varieties.

--Select only plants with small, tight, green button-like flower parts in the center of the bracts. If they are large and show a syrup-like sap, then the greatest amount of its display life has passed.

--Poinsettia prices usually are based on the number of bracts, size of the plant and size of the bracts.

--Poinsettias will do best in sunny locations indoors away form drafts and heating vents. Water sparingly.

--The length of time the poinsettia will remain attractive inside depends on the maturity of the plant at the time it is purchased and the care given following purchase. The average life of the poinsettia is between two to four weeks. With excellent care, it may last six to eight weeks or longer.

MISTLETOE: THE OTHER CHRISTMAS WEED

The foremost Christmas weed brightens the dark, dreary days of winter with its bracts of red and flowers of gold. Yes, the poinsettia is recognized by everyone.

Yet, there is another weed (of a sort) that takes on special meaning during this season.

This weed has no bright colors to attract attention, but if two people meet in its presence, their hearts can beat faster. The custom associated with this weed has awarded the first kiss to many young people -- while standing under the mistletoe.

Kissing under the mistletoe is one of many folklore stories associated with mistletoe.

Another story says Jesus was crucified on a cross of mistletoe wood. As punishment, the plant was banned from earth, thus growing in trees as a dwarfish plant. Mistletoe is still called Herbe de la Croix in parts of Brittany.

More than 1300 species of mistletoe are found around the world. The unusual nature of growth has set it apart from other plants. Early Anglo-Saxons called it mistl-tan meaning different twig.

In many parts of the world, mistletoes are attributed with mystic and medicinal powers. Mistletoe was sacred to the Druids of northern Europe, the Ainos of Japan and certain African tribes.

Until the middle of the 19th century, European mistletoe was prominent in medicine and pharmacology. When growing on sacred willows in Japan, mistletoe was regarded as the cure for many diseases. In Malaysia, certain mistletoes were used as muscle relaxants during childbirth and to treat ringworm and snakebite.

Mistletoes injure forests, orchard and ornamental plants. The parasitic plants extract water and nutrients from their tree hosts.

The mistletoes impair growth, lower host vigor, reduce wood quality and quantity, reduce fruiting and predispose trees to attack by insects and disease. In North America, wood losses caused by this weed are about 500 million cubic feet per year.

In some areas, collection of mistletoe is a cottage industry. Beginning in late November, mistletoe is collected, bagged and sold for Christmas decorations. Some harvest mistletoe while hanging over the edge of the basket of a hot air balloon.

PPSO Spreads Christmas Cheer with Toys for Smiles Program

I extend my gratitude to the many other volunteers, especially those from the CPA Alumni Association and Sheriff’s Office, who give their time, consistently, year after year to the Toys for Smiles program. There is nothing more rewarding than spreading a little holiday cheer throughout the community and seeing the smile on a child’s face when they receive a gift.”

A n y o n e i n t e r e s t e d i n contributing to next year’s program may do so by mailing it to Toys for Smiles, 148 Evangeline Trace, Belle Chasse, LA 70037. All donors remain anonymous.

T h o s e i n t e r e s t e d i n volunteering next year is asked to register with the PPSO’s Special Services Division at 504-391-2004.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

My goal is to fill the box and board every time.

No matter what board I use.

What fish I hang.

I get them in the boat quickly. 3 at once with 2 customers.

I enjoy my customers and seeing smiles on their faces.

I got small ones.

I got big ones.

Some days were nasty and challenging.

GENERALLY SPEAKING

It’s been nonstop speck catching all over the place. Places the trout have avoided in recent years are full of fish. Reds are still incredibly abundant and the competition for food has the bulls averaging as much as ten pounds per fish less than in recent years. The size and number limits might have to be reviewed in the near future to allow more reds to get over 25 pounds. Meanwhile, catch and release ’til your hearts’ content. Red snapper are even more plentiful. One report from an unnamed expert source said a recent school of red snapper was so tall and covered so many acres that it was estimated that there were about SIX MILLION RED SNAPPER in that one school! Not much else to talk about this year. Have a great time fishing during the holidays and let’s hope the feds get a little more realistic about red snapper limits and fishing seasons so one noted outdoor newspaper editor can get off his soapbox about it every third column.

Safe fishing and hook ‘em good! Don’t forget to go to MGM Marina or Beshel’s for some wonderful fishing results or call one of the writers who have been giving us reports over the past years. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. Although the weather can’t make up its mind if it’s winter or summer, one thing is sure down here in South Plaquemines - the redfish are tearing it up! If you’re looking for a good time and ready to fill your ice chest, come down here. Be aware of the water levels so you don’t run aground, then start fishing all points and cuts up to California Bay. Start by crossing the river to Quarantine Bay at Boopie’s Buras Marina Launch. When you fish the banks, you’ll harvest smaller reds - the good eatin’ kind. If you fish off the bank, the non-keeper bull reds will keep you entertained for hours. The surrounding canals and pipelines also yield lots of reds of all sizes - two years ago, on the west bank, some monster (40 pounds or more) bulls were pulled out of canals so narrow you could almost navigate them by foot. Head towards Yellow Cotton Bay from the Buras Canal on the west side, checking all the cuts and drains on your way down toward the open water. The best baits are usually always Gulp! shrimp and don’t worry about the color. Fish them under a cork or use market shrimp. Remember - tides have been low so be cautious when entering unfamiliar waters. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS 504-912-8291

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced the state recreational red snapper season will remain open through the rest of December and will close at 11:59 pm on December 31, 2014. Using real-time data from LA Creel, our recreational landings monitoring program, we have determined that Louisiana anglers have not yet landed our state’s historic and projected share of the total Gulf of Mexico recreational red snapper harvest (14 percent, or 754,000 pounds). The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission previously opened a state waters season for red snapper to extend Louisiana’s season from the nine-day federal waters season originally proposed by NOAA. NOAA based this short season on imprecise estimates of recreational red snapper landings from their Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP); with LA Creel’s more precise estimates, Louisiana officials knew that nine days would not allow our anglers sufficient opportunity to catch their share.

On January 1, 2014, the Department withdrew from MRIP and replaced it with LA Creel due to MRIP’s history of providing poor data and its inability to monitor landings in real-time. Had the Department accepted MRIP’s estimates and the subsequent nine-day season, Louisiana anglers would have only been able to land about 150,000 pounds of red snapper—far short of Louisiana’s historic landings. Through the extended state waters season, Louisiana anglers have landed about 605,000 pounds of red snapper to date, which is why the season can remain open through the rest of the year. Thanks to tremendous angler support of LA Creel and a recent saltwater license fee increase to continue to fund the program, the Department has the necessary tools to precisely monitor our recreational red snapper landings, flexibly manage the fishery, and maximize our anglers’ opportunities to fish red snapper.

The Department has continued negotiations with NOAA to recognize the validity of LA Creel and recently reached an agreement to “benchmark” LA Creel and officially establish it as a replacement for MRIP. Through the benchmarking process, the Department will run the MRIP survey side-by-side with LA Creel for the 2015 recreational fishing season. NOAA will compare the results from both surveys and adjust historic recreational landings estimates accordingly. Once LA Creel is benchmarked, Louisiana will no longer run MRIP, and officials hope that NOAA will support LA Creel and use its more precise results to conduct future stock assessments. This process paves the way for other Gulf states to adopt their own recreational angler survey programs, improves data collection, and helps move management of the recreational red snapper fishery forward.

Beginning in January 2015, Louisiana anglers can expect to see an increased survey presence as Department personnel conduct both surveys statewide throughout the calendar year. “Our anglers have always been incredibly patient and helpful with our biologists, whether at the dock, over the phone, or via email,” said Department Secretary Robert Barham. “We ask for and greatly appreciate their continued cooperation as we take this important step in our quest towards regional management.” Secretary Barham recently testified on the benefits of Louisiana’s enhanced data collection in support of state management of red snapper during the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans, and Insular Affairs hearing on H.R. 3099—the Gulf of Mexico Red Snapper Conservation Act of 2013.

The Commission will determine Louisiana’s 2015 recreational red snapper season in their early 2015 meetings. For the latest updates on Commission meetings and actions, sign up for Department meeting alerts and/or news releases.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is charged with managing and protecting Louisiana’s abundant natural resources. For more information, visit us at www.wlf.la.gov, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ldwffb or follow us on Twitter @LDWF.

After picking and bagging the oranges, there were 120 bags delivered to four different locations. Heidi Nungesser Landry, RWL 2nd-Vice-President and her daughter, Olivia, delivered the first 30 bags to Riverbend Nursing Home. RWL President, Nancy Wolfe and her husband RWL Pelican Bill Wolfe, delivered 30 bags to Padua House in Belle Chasse. RWL Secretary, Donna Bruskotter delivered 30 bags to the Landing in Algiers and 30 more to The Plaquemines Community Care Center and the Casa program. From there they were distributed to families in the community. The Republican Women of Louisiana is a member-driven organization. If interested, contact Heidi Nungesser Landry at 504-874-6141.

Christmas is quickly approaching. You can feel the excitement in the air. The children are all anxious to see what Santa will leave under the tree. The adults are scurrying around making sure all the last minute details are taken care of. That last gift that must be bought, the treats and refreshments for the company that is coming, the house must be picked up and orderly with everything in it’s place. You are all done with the school parties and everything that needed to be made for the gifts to students, teachers, and various staff members have all been done and given. But there, in the back of your mind, something just doesn’t seem right, something is not complete. You’ve gone over your list of things to do and everything has been checked off. Just need to get the next 3 days of work over with and then it’s Christmas Day! So why do you still have this nagging feeling that something is left undone? Than it hits you at 4: a.m. Monday morning. Thirty minutes before the alarm goes off you sit straight up in bed. The feeling of dread! With all the hustle and bustle you forgot to take pictures of the completed crafts you made for gifts that have already been given. Your heart sinks. This is the first time in over 2 years you don’t have something to share with everyone. There is no time to make anything, you have to be at work soon. So what do you now? The only thing I can do, apologize. No excuses, I got busy and forgot. I feel awful! I cannot believe I forgot! But, I did, I’m sorry. But, on the other hand…

Let’s not forget the real meaning of Christmas. It’s not about the gifts that we have made or bought. Or all the goodies that we will be serving. Or how clean, neat, and tidy the house is, or all the decorations we have on display. It’s about being with family and those we love. It’s about the birth of Baby Jesus. He is the real meaning of Christmas. From my family to yours, Wishing you all a very Blessed and Merry Christmas. And may your New Year shine as bright as the stars in the Heavens.

The magic of the holiday season is here, and 2014 is drawing to a close and, it’s not too late to make a year-end donation for your 2014 tax deduction. There’s truly no better time to make a gift.

As a no-kill animal shelter, the average cost to care for one animal at PAWS is $558. This year’s goal is to raise $558,000 -- enough funds to save the lives and care for 1,000 dogs and cats. The only way to achieve this goal is with the generosity and ongoing support of people like you.

2014 PAWS Shelter Animal Stats:

• Average length of stay: 206 days

• 91 dogs were treated for severe demodex and/or heartworm. Average cost: $392 ea.

• Average vet/medical expense: $184 ea.

• Cost of cat litter: $23/day

• Cost of dog/cat food: $15/day

We challenge you to help PAWS reach that goal! Below are six ways you can be part of the success stories for these animals. Click on the amount you would like to donate or choose your own amount. You can even set up a recurring amount. How easy is that!

$184 – Sponsor vet/medical expenses for 1 animal.

$392 – Sponsor demodex/heartworm treatment for 1 dag.

Papa Noel’s Pajama Party“HO HO HO, Merry Christmas!“ These are the words you could hear throughout the halls of the Buras YMCA on Friday, December 12th as Santa arrived for Papa Noel’s Pajama Party. Santa and Mrs. Claus greeted the families as they entered a room full of holiday cheer. Kids of all ages enjoyed gingerbread decorating, a hot cocoa station, pictures with Santa and story time with Mrs. Claus. She even led an impromptu gathering of kids singing Christmas carols. Over 50 children attended this sold out event wearing their favorite Christmas Pajamas. It was a joyous evening for everyone involved. Thanks to the participants, volunteers and staff for making this a jolly good time. Happy Holidays from the Buras YMCA!
