September 09, 2009: Beginning of Bare-bones Guide

September 10 - October 5, 2009: Writing the Johto Guide

    October 13, 2009 - January 11, 2010: Writing the Kanto Guide

    ______________________________________________________________________________

February 15, 2010: Hello everyone! Now that we have the Kanto guide out of

the way, the guide is now up to version 3.00! We have made

several changes to the guide that should bring this guide

up to speed for the English release in March.

    * Thanks to serebii.net, various names of the English

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    3/175

version have been revealed, including your other gender

rival's names, team rocket executives, various item

names, and a few locations that were not in the original

GSC. They have been changed in this version of the guide

to reflect the English version of the game.

The Poketholon has been changed to Pokeathlon, and the

Technique stat is now the Skill stat. The Pokedex section

has been edited to reflect these changes.

    * Added the Kanto guide up to the Viridian Gym

    * Pokeathlon stats and Move Tutor info up to the Sinnoh Dex

    have been added

    * Japanese/English changes added to the Changes FAQ

    section.

If anything has been changed from what serebii says, or any

new info is revealed, I will add it to the guide. If you

see anything that references the Japanese version, then let

    me know.

As far as the next update goes, I will try to get the

Updated Pokemon League, Cerulean Cave, and Mt. Silver and

the final battle in before or around the release of HGSS

    in North America.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

March 09, 2010: Only several more days until HG/SS is released in the

United States! Here is a update to help finish up a bunch

    of things.

    * Added the Endgame Guide section. This covers the rematch

against the Elite Four, Mt. Silver, and the final battle

    against the former Champion.

    * Added the Battle Frontier guide from my Platinum guide,

    and corrected it for HGSS.

    * Added a variety of Legendary areas, including two of the

    Legendary Birds, and Suicune.

Originally, this update was going to contain info on

Cerulean Cave/Mewtwo and Seafoam/Articuno, but I wanted to

get the info on the updated Elite Four and Mt. Silver

before the game comes out in the US. Hopefully, they should

be in Version 3.11, which I will try to get out before the

    US version comes out.

As for updates, I am going to try to do at least one more

update before it is released. If there is any major things

revealed before the release, such as any English names and

the like, I will try to add it to the guide. It might take

me a few days to get through HGSS, so bear with me when it

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    5/175

    comes to updates.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

March 12, 2010: Got several more updates today!

    * Added Mewtwo/Cerulean Cave and Articuno/Seafoam Island

    to the side-quest section.

    * Re-did the Pokemon Encounter rates to include Pokemon

that are available via Rock Smash and Headbutting

Trees. Also removed any instances of surfing or national

dex Pokemon where there are none for that route or area.

    * Added info to the Pokedex section on Pokemon that can

only be found in the special Safari Zone settings or

    via the Pokewalker.

By the time this update should be out, Pokemon HGSS should

be available in the United States. I will try to answer

any questions that come along, and fix any errors as soon

    as I can.

There should be a lot more content in the following updates

(Phone info, Gym Leader rematches, Pokeathlon and Pokewalker

    info, etc), so stay tuned!

    ______________________________________________________________________________

March 14, 2010: Hello English players! If you are reading this, you

probably picked up HGSS from your local store. This update

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    6/175

is mostly a few corrections from the Japanese version.

    * Changed the info on the old man in the beginning of

    Cherrygrove

    * Renamed all instances of Tin Tower to Bell Tower.

    * Changed the rival's first encounter from ??? to Passerby

    Boy.

    * Re-did the Game Corner section of Goldenrod.

    * Added the questions the lady at the Goldenrod Radio Tower

    asks you.

I will be adding more as I play the English version.

Nintendo has also announced that the Yellow Forrest event

for the Pokewalker will become available on April the 1st

    up until April the 30th.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

March 16th, 2010: Hello everyone! I am near the end of the English Version

(Got all 16 badges and most of the legendaries), so I have

    several major additions.

    * Added English names for trainers on the routes, caves,

    and Gyms.

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    7/175

    * Added Lapras to the side quest section.

    * Added the PokeGear Phone Numbers to the guide.

    * Added Daily/Weekly side quests as well as a schedule

for what you can do on each day.

    * Added the questions the elder at the Dragon's Den asks

you and clarified how you get a Dratini.

    * Added several places you can get decent hidden items,

    like Rare Candy

    * Added info on things you can do once you can surf

    * Added some more info on various places, like the

Goldenrod Underground and the Celadon Game Corner

    * Added a capture profile for Sudowoodo in the main

    guide.

    * Did a number of corrections, mainly stuff people pointed

    out in their emails.

I was going to add Entei and Raikou in this update, but due

to time I will have to do it in the next one. Currently,

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    8/175

I am up to date with my emails and if I have not responded,

it is either because I already corrected something, the

question is already in the guide, or it is a old email.

Also, the next week might not have any updates, since I

will be rather busy. I will still answer any questions, and

if you still see anything wrong, let me know.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

April 7th, 2010: It has been awhile since I last updated...I have been

working on this version for awhile, but due to a variety of

things going on I have not had much of a chance to work on

it for half a month. Here is the updates:

    * Added the Berry Guide section, which is a heavily

modified version of my berry guide from Platinum

    * Added the side quest section for non-weekly or daily

    side-quests

    * Added Entei and Raikou to the side quest section

    * Split the Pokegear Phonenumber section into a new

part of the guide called "Pokegear Guide"

    * Corrected the Extremespeed Dratini info that MANY of you

    have emailed me about.

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    9/175

    * Added the requested Exclusives Guide to the Misc Guide

    section

    * Added the Special Wallpapers and Eggs section

    * Added a new way to look at your Secret ID.

    * Added my friends code at the bottom. If you feel like

battling, let me know and we will work out a time. I will

    not do trades, however.

    * Did several corrections here and there.

I have gone through all of my emails and made the changes

that were necessary. As for the next updates, I do plan on

adding some info on the Pokewalker finally after testing it

out for the last month or so, and I also plan to cover the

two new routes in Johto. I will be going on a trip at the

end of the month, so do not expect any updates until May.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

April 18, 2010: Although I did not add the new areas to the guide in this

update, I did add a few things I have been wanting to add

    for awhile.

    * Added the Swarm, Headbutt, Bug Catching Contest, and

Hoenn and Sinnoh sound to the Post-National Dex section

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    10/175

    * Added the Bank of Mom and Rock Smash Item section to

    the misc guide section.

    * Thanks to a reader with the handle Tarken, I found out

that I missed the Wise Glasses item in not only the

main guide, but in the items guide.

    * Thanks to a reader named Julie, I have made some changes

to the ability section for quite a few abilities.

    * Thanks to a reader named Jeremy, we have some more info

on the Voltorb Flip game that I absolutely hate.

    * Did some other minor corrections here and there.

I got to most of the emails, but there are still I few I

need to check although I got most of the important stuff

out of the way. Also, for those who do not know Pokemon

Black and White have been revealed and will be released in

Japan at the end of this year on the DS. Goodie...More work

    in front of me.

When you first step out, Marill will come up to you and then leave and you

will see the first glimpse of the opposite gender rival. If you are playing

as a male, your opposite gender rival will be Lyra, a new addition to the

GSC story and a replacement for Crystal's Kris female character. Female

characters will meet Ethan, the original protagonist from GSC.

You can explore a little bit and see a red haired boy in the window, but for

now continue to Prof. Elm's lab (The big building in the upper left). Go

inside and he will ask you to run a errand for him and let you choose between

    3 Pokemon.

    * Totodile, a water Pokemon

    * Chikorita, a grass Pokemon

    * Cyndaquil, a fire Pokemon

In this game, Cyndaquil is actually easy mode, Totodile is medium, and

Chikorita is hard to use against the gyms, so choose wisely. The Pokemon

you choose will also appear behind you now. Before you leave, Prof. Elm's

aid will give you 5 Potions.

After you exit the lab, Ethan or Lyra will appear and talk to you and leave

again. Once that is finished, go talk to your mother and she will give you

the Pokegear. It is similar to how it worked in the original GSC versions,

but it now has touchscreen support. Leave your house and try to go west

and Prof. Elm will appear and give you his phone number. Once you are ready,

Since you just got your first Pokemon, you might want to take the time to

fight some of the Pokemon on this route for experience. It is mainly Sentret

for the most part, but Hoothoot do come out at night. You cannot catch Pokemon

at this point, so it is just battling at this point. Head west until you reach

    * Note that items such as Pokeballs will not be available until after you

have learned how to capture Pokemon.

Once you enter Cherrygrove, a old man at the entrance will show you around and

then give you the Running Shoes, a staple of the series since RSE that allows

you to run when you hold the B Button. If you tap the shoes on the touch

screen, they will allow you to run without pressing the B Button. However,

keep in mind that wild pokemon will appear more if you are using the Running

Shoes, so you may want to walk while you are in grass.

You might want to heal up at this point at the Pokemon Center. You cannot

capture Pokemon at the moment, so you will have to wait. You can buy Potions

however. Once you are ready, head over to Route 30. When you try to leave,

the old man will stop you and give you a Pokegear add-on called the Map

Card. It will allow you to see the map via the Pokegear and keep track of

any roaming Pokemon you have active.

Route 30 has changed a little bit since the old days. You still do not have

any Pokeballs, but you can get a Apricorn Box from the man in the first house

you see. It will allow you to get Apricorns from the different looking trees

    around Johto.

You can't go up the west side of the route yet, so continue to the east side

up to Mr. Pokemon's house. Inside, you will find Prof. Oak and Mr. Pokemon

talking and Mr. Pokemon will give you the Odd Egg key item and heal your

Pokemon. After that, Prof Oak will give you the Johto Pokedex and his

phone number. Head outside and Prof. Elm will call you and say that one of his

    Pokemon has been stolen.

    +========================+

Cherrygrove and Route 29

Head back to Cherrygrove and then to Route 29 (Make sure your Pokemon are

    /____________________________________________________________________________\

Boss: Falkner

____________________________________________________________________________

Pokemon:

Pidgey lv 9 (Normal/Flying)

Pidgeotto lv 13 (Normal/Flying)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Falkner has increased his levels a little, now being a little tougher

then he used to be. His Pidgey likes to use Sand Attack and then

tackle a whole bunch, so you may want to bring a Pokemon that can take

it out quickly before it does sand attack too many times.

Pidgeotto, however, it the real problem. It likes to use Gust, Tackle,

and Roost. If you have a Cyndaquil, Totodile or their evolutions, use

them. If you choose Chikorita, you are going to have to be a little

more crafty.

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    42/175

One strategy I used with Chikorita was to use Onix first and beat the

Pidgey (Onix was at level 8), and then switch to Chikorita and use

Poisonpowder and switch back to Onix. As long as you have potions,

Pidgeotto will eventually run out of Roosts to use (Roost recovers

health and makes any flying Pokemon the normal type). Another strategy

is to use a fighting move once it uses Roost.

    \____________________________________________________________________________/

Once you beat Falkner, you will get TM51 (Roost) and the Zephyr Badge. All

Pokemon you get in trades up to level 20 will now obay you, and you can now

use Rock Smash out of battle as well.

After you leave the Gym, Prof. Elm will call you and tell you to meet up with

his aide at the Pokemart. Go to the Pokemart and talk to the aide to get a

egg with Togepi in it. When you leave the Pokemart, one of the Kimono girls

from the original G/S/C will come up to you and talk about your egg and run

    off.

Once you are ready, go south of the Pokemart until you reach Route 32.

Info: Bugsy may have the same team from back then, but the strategy is very

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    57/175

different. One main change is he starts with Scyther. Reason being is

Scyther now uses U-Turn a powerful attack that switches out with

another Pokemon after it is used. Kakuna and Metapod are both very

weak and only have the attacks they had when they were Weedle and

Caterpie respectively, so they are not hard to KO.

The real danger actually begins after both are knocked out, since he

can now use U-Turn without having to switch out. Many times it will be

a instant knockout, so be careful. Scyther also has Quick Attack, Leer

and Focus Energy (Be careful if he uses Focus Energy). The best

Pokemon to use is fire and rock (Quilava, Geodude, and Onix are all

good Pokemon to use). Pokemon with high resistance also helps as well.

It might be a good idea to use some potions and wait until he runs

out of PP for U-Turn if he is too hard otherwise.

    \---------------------------------------------------------------------------- /

Once you beat Bugsy, you will get the Hive Badge and TM89. You can now also

use cut outside of battle and control traded Pokemon up to level 30. Once you

are ready, hit the switch next to Bugsy to go back to the entrance and back to

Croconaw (If you choose Cyndaquil) lv 18 (Water)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Your rival's Pokemon are a little higher then they were in the past.

Its recommended that your team is at least level 15 before fighting

him.

Gastly is a new Pokemon you have not fought yet, and is a ghost and

Poison type. Normal attacks will not effect it, so ghost and psychic

attacks work well. It has Levitate, so ground attacks are useless

against it.

Zubat is nothing new. Electric, Psychic or rock attacks all work well

against it. Onix, Mareep, and Geodude are all good to use.

Finally, your rival's starter is your biggest threat. Unlike later

games, the Johto starters do not have a dual type, so you cannot

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    59/175

exploit any other weaknesses. Ground attacks are useful against

Quilava, grass and electric are good against Croconaw, and flying is

effective against Bayleef. Onix/Geodude, Flaffy, and Pidgey are useful

in that order.

    \---------------------------------------------------------------------------- /

Once you beat him, he will run back into the Ilex Forest. Head back to the

Once you are ready, head up and you will talk to one of the people from the

Charcoal house from Azalea. He mentions that several of his Farfetch'd have

run off, and wants you to go get them.

The trick to capturing them is sneaking up behind them, and that becomes hard

if you step on the twigs. The first time you go to the right, you will always

step on the twigs and have the Farfetch'd notice you. After you do that, go

to the right and avoid the other set of twigs and go around the right path

until you are behind the Farfetch'd. Press A and you will capture it.

For the second one, chase it to the right side by going up the left and

pressing A. After that, go back down and on the right path. Step on the

first set of twigs to make the Farfetch'd look to the right, and then go up

and ignore the second patch and go down and press A.

After that, the owner will show up and give you HM01 Cut. Teach it to one of

your Pokemon and then cut down the tree that is in front of you. Also, if you

go back to Azalea Town and go to the building that is on the far right bottom,

talk to the assistant inside and he will give you the Charcoal item. It will

increase fire type moves when it is attached to a Pokemon.

Once you cut down the tree, go up and then up to the left. Then go right

and up. After that, you will meet one of the Kimono girls again. Press the top

option and your Pokemon will jump around and she will leave.

There is also a path on the right side that will lead you to a big guy that is

headbutting a tree. If you talk to him, he will teach any of your Pokemon

Headbutt, and he will do this any number of times that you ask.

Go left to find the exit. In the gatehouse, talk to the woman with the

    Butterfree to get TM12 (Taunt).

Pokemon to be about level 16 or above.

Another landmark on this route is the daycare/breeding center. When you get

close, Ethan/Lyra will appear and talk to the Daycare couple. As it turns out,

they are Ethan/Lyra's grandparents. He/she will then take you inside and

introduce you to his/her grandma and give you their phone number phone number.

Once you exit, the old man will give you his phone number as well. You can now

use the center for leveling your Pokemon (1 step = one EXP point), or put two

Pokemon in and create a egg if they are compatible and a male and female

(Look at the breeding guide for more info).

Near the end of the route, if you go to the right, you can find TM63 (Embargo)

The Goldenrod Underground is located south of the game corner and also near

the Name Raters house at the north part of Goldenrod. When you first enter,

Ethan or Lyra will appear and give you the Accessory Case. While there is

no contests in Johto, they can be used for dressing up your Pokemon for

    pictures.

Once you are in the underground, you will find several trainers. There is also

a variety of different things that appear down there on certain days. The

Bargain Shops appears on Monday mornings, and has sell-able items that you can

    buy for slightly lower.

The two hairdressers that raise your Pokemon's happiness appear on Tuesday,

Thursday, and Saturday for the older brother (Costs 500p, but you get more

happiness on your Pokemon), and the younger brother shows up on Sunday,

Wednesday, and Friday (300p, but less happiness gain).

Finally, the herb shop sells various bitter herbs that are cheaper then buying

them from a Pokemon shop, but decrease your Pokemon's happiness.

Goldenrod Game Corner

    +=====================+

The game corner side quest is slightly different depending on what version

you are playing. You can find the game corner above the Pokemon Center.

    JAPANESE VERSION:

    ==============================================================================

In the game corner, you can find TM78 (Captivate). To play any of the slots,

you will need to go to the underground portion of Goldenrod that is south of

    the game corner.

The slots are similar to how they were in the past: You can pay either 1, 2 or

3 coins and depending on how many you put in you can line them up several

ways. You can also get a bonus round if you line up 3 Pokeballs. The machines

also sometimes pay out more for match ups and is shown at the top.

    ==============================================================================

You can still get the Accessory Case by going to the underground, although you

can no longer find the Coin Case there.

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    72/175

    NORTH AMERICAN AND PAL VERSIONS:

    ==============================================================================

The game corner has been completely been redesigned. The TM for Captivate is

no longer located there, and the building is now only a card table with a

NPC called Mr. Game with two old gentlemen that act as the receptionist. You

can't buy coins anymore, either. On the other hand, the mini-game no longer

requires you to spend coins. If you talk to Mr. Game, he will give you the

    Coin Case.

The new game is a minesweeper-like game called Voltorb Flip. The game is a

bit complicated when you first do it, but it is basic once you figure it out:

There are 5 rows with 5 blocks in each, with a total of 25 blocks total for

the entire game. On the right side and on the bottom is the number of Voltorbs

that is on that row, and what the number adds up to. So, if a row has a 05

at the top and 0 Voltorb, that means that there is all 1s there.

You gain coins depending on how many multiples you can get. Say, for example

that you get 1 to begin with, you will get 1 coin. If you keep finding 1s,

then it will not go up, but if you find a 2x or 3x, you will double your coins

and get 2 or 3 coins.

If you find another 2x or 3x, the amount you have in the Coins Collected in

Current Game will be multiplied. However, if you run into a Voltorb, it will

be game over and you will lose any coins for the current game.

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    73/175

You can, however, collect any coins you have with the current game by pressing

the B button. Any coins you collected during your game will be added to your

coin case. You level up by finding all the 2 and 3 numbers on the board.

The best advise I have is to knock out the rows with 0 Voltorb first, and then

tackle the other rows. If you don't feel too brave, you can quit after taking

out the 0 voltorb rows and still have a decent amount of coins left over most

    of the time.

    Jeremy has this to add:

    ______________________________________________________________________________

"Flipping 2's and 3's is the only way to earn coins and clear the level, so a

lot of playing the game boils down to identifying squares that don't have a 2

or 3; skipping those squares improves your chances a lot.

If the number plus the voltorb count for a row or column totals to 5, don't

bother flipping any squares there, it's only 1's and Voltorbs. For example,

if the row says 4 / 1, then there is one Voltorb and 4 1's in that row.

If the number plus the voltorb count is bigger than 5, that tells you how

many "extras" or scorable points there are in that row or column. For

example, if the column says 4 / 2, the total is 6, one more than 5; this

tells you that there is one scoring square in that column (the column will be

two Voltorbs, two 1's and one 2).

However, it's not always that simple. When the number of "extras" gets

higher, you can't be sure how many scoring squares there are. For example, a

  • 8/8/2019 pokemon walkthrough

    74/175

row that is 6 / 1 could be : (one voltorb, three 1's and one 3) or (one

voltorb, two 1's and two 2's).

The strategy I use is :

    - First flip all the squares in rows and columns with 0 Voltorbs

    - Identify the rows and columns that don't have any "extras" and use the memo

function to mark them all (I mark them as a "1" since that's the best that

is there, but you could mark them as being either "voltorb" or "1"). I

usually never flip these marked squares.

    - Pick the row with the highest number of extras that are
