Dear reader,

You are holding the policy plan of the thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built

Environment. This policy plan provides you with a description of how we will focus on the

development of the association for the upcoming year and what aspects we find important to deal

with.

The last months we worked hard on the preparations for the upcoming year, which we could not

have done without the help of our predecessors and the other members of CHEOPS. We will start

the new year with lots of energy and enthusiasm and we hope that you are as excited as us, so we

can really make the best of it!

We hope you enjoy reading the plan and we hope to see you at one of the activities or just to have

some coffee at the CHEOPS bridge!

1. Introduction

This policy plan describes the goals of the thirty-first board of CHEOPS in the academic year 2016-

2017, as describes in the articles of association of CHEOPS. Every board has a different vision about

CHEOPS and will work differently to accomplish these goals. This document describes how the

thirty-first board will handle its goals. This policy plan is a supporting document that will serve as a

guidance during the board year of the thirty-first board.

To reach these goals, the thirty-first board has set up policy articles that will be further elaborated

in this policy plan.

This policy plan also describes the tasks of the board and the structure of CHEOPS. Next to this, all

the committees that are part of CHEOPS during the study-year 2016-2017 will be explained. Finally

the members of the thirty-first board will introduce themselves.

2. Vision | Participate in Progress

In the coming years, major changes will occur that will have influence on the association. We, as the thirty-first board of CHEOPS, want CHEOPS to get ready for the future. Therefore, it is

important to have a clear overview of all knowledge and experience that is available within

CHEOPS, to clarify the responsibilities and the internal structure of CHEOPS and to draw up plans

that are more forethought than one year.

We believe that this is not possible without collaboration. New activities that will be organised by

multiple parties will strengthen the bonds and are mutually beneficial. Together with active

members and non-active members we want look at what CHEOPS stands for and which way to go

the next couple of years, both intern and extern. With all information of previous years and the new

information that we will gain this year, we devote ourselves to the association, so that the

association will improve even more during the upcoming years. After all, CHEOPS is a big,

professional association, with many enthusiastic members. Therefore, it is important to us to

promote the interests of everyone and to hear everyone’s voice. Let us use our qualities, assemble

our knowledge and combine our strengths! Because with this vision of our members and the

knowledge and experience of the past, we lay a foundation for the improvement in the future.

We want everyone to Participate in Progress!

3. Objectives

The goal of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment is to represent the interests of the

students of the faculty of the Built Environment of the Eindhoven University of Technology. (Article

2, articles of the association of CHEOPS, study association of the Built Environment) From this the following main purposes derive:

⦁ To watch over and improve the quality of the education, ⦁ To promote the knowledge of and interest in the discipline of the Built Environment, ⦁ To provide additional services concerning the education, ⦁ To improve the social bond between members, ⦁ To offer possibilities for all members to develop themselves in other skills than those only

connected to the Built Environment.

“The association aims to promote the interests of the students of the Faculty of the Built

Environment of the Eindhoven University of Technology. The association strives to achieve this

goals by organizing a number of activities where any field of study must be addressed and by

maintaining contact with eligible instances inside and outside the Eindhoven University of

Technology.” (article 2, articles of the association ofCHEOPS, study association of the Built

Environment)

From this part of the articles of the association the following important means to achieve the main

purposes derive:

⦁ To organize many activities, which will represent all disciplines within the Built

Environment ⦁ To inform the studying and new students, companies and other institutions within the

discipline of the Built Environment about activities and developments within the

education, the faculty of the Built Environment and the association. ⦁ To uphold contacts with institutions, companies and foundations that are of importance

for the association.

These purposes will be pursued by the board and its committees.

4. Policy articles

4.1 CHEOPS_35

Every year, CHEOPS forms a new board with a new policy plan that is the guidance for their board

year. Boards are given the freedom to define what they want to approach and achieve that year.

However, this also means that after the change of the board a new path for the association will be

followed, resulting in an interruption of the continuity of the association.

A long term policy gives CHEOPS a guideline for the future and sets a basis for justifying the

decisions of the board to the members. Besides, it helps CHEOPS to create a certain continuity, so

that the association has the possibility to improve and develop more quickly and efficiently the

upcoming years. Five years seems to be an achievable and manageable timeframe to prepare and

execute such a plan. This is why this policy plan will be called CHEOPS_35.

CHEOPS_35 will be established based on five different phases: the orientation phase, the inventory

phase, the processing phase, the interpretation phase and the elaboration phase. After composing

CHEOPS_35, it is important to think about the deployment and the application of the plan, the

utilization phase.

Orientation phase Since CHEOPS doesn’t have any experience in the field of long term policy plans, the board first

wants to investigate how to effectively set up such a plan. We want to achieve this by interviewing

comparable associations that already use long term plans. Besides this, we also want to get more

insight in writing policy plans, by following a course in writing long term plans with a part of the

board. In this phase there will also be a brainstorm about the subjects that will follow up in the

inventory phase.

Inventory phase With the usage of all the information gained during the orientation phase, we will measure the

opinions of the members. This could be achieved by using surveys, interviews and discussions. A

suiting promotion is important to involve as much members as possible and to get a complete

inventory of the wishes, expectations and interests of our members. It is also desirable to contact

companies about their expectations and wishes for the future regarding the collaboration and the

students.

Processing phase The content of this phase will mainly depend on the method of the inventory. The results obtained

will remain objective during this phase.

Interpretation phase The objective results from the processing phase will obtain value, in collaboration with the

members. In this phase conclusions will be drawn about what the contents of CHEOPS_35 should

be.

The elaboration phase The results of the interpretation phase will be put onto paper. The first version of CHEOPS_35 will

be written down. This version will be improved in consultation with the members and a definite

version will be set up.

Policy plan thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment

8

Utilization phase When CHEOPS_35 is finished, it is important that this document will be lived up to. This phase

concerns the period from the 32st up to and including the 35th board year. The controlling and

advising role will lie within a supervisory body of CHEOPS. It could be a permanent point on the

agenda of the GMM or Advisory Council.

4.2 Cooperation with the sub-associations CHEOPS is a study association that looks after the interests of all students within the faculty of the

Built Environment, both bachelor and master students. CHEOPS provides this role together with

her sub-associations. Next to the wide offer of activities that CHEOPS provides, the sub-

associations provide activities that are more specialized in the different master specialisations.

However, there has been observed that there is too little alignment between the activities. Besides

this, the process of choosing a specific master and the thereby belonging sub association can be

confusing for some bachelor students. Also, the positions between the associations themselves

are not always clear.

By organising activities more in mutual consultation or collaboration, there will be less overlap

between the activities and the concurrence between the activities will decrease. By collaboration

between CHEOPS and the sub associations, master students will learn more about CHEOPS and

what it can offer them. Next to this, we see it as CHEOPS’ task to bring bachelor students in touch

with the sub associations, which each stand for a different field in the Build Environment. This is

beneficial for both CHEOPS, the sub associations and the students.

Year calendar In consultation with the sub-associations is stated that with the help of a work group there will be

looked for better possibilities for a mutual year calendar in which all activities of all associations

can be found. This work group will search for an uncomplicated system which will enable students

to look at the calendar from multiple angles. These angles could be target groups, organising

associations, date or the kind of activity. CHEOPS will actively participate in this process and

strives to deliver this system this year in collaboration with the sub-associations.

Consultation structure Also discussed is a new consultation structure which can lead to more efficient meetings between

the associations. One of the results is a B.A.U. consultation structure. This will be consultations

between the associations with the same bachelor discipline: Building Physics & Structural Design

(B), Architectural Urban Design and Engineering (A) en Urban Systems and Real Estate (U). In this

way topics that only regard a small group of associations, do not have to be discussed in the CSPC

or can be discussed faster. CHEOPS will organize a next CSPC XL where both the workgroup of the

consultation structure and the year calendar workgroup can propose their plans. Thereafter , CHEOPS will strive to deploy this new consulting structure in the second half of this

academic year. Therefore it is important that the role of every party involved and the consulting

structure is clearly stated so this can be lived up to.

Organising together When the different associations organize activities together, this will be beneficial for both parties.

That is the reason why CHEOPS wants to do this more frequently the coming year. In terms of

departmental expertise, contacts and financial aids, the associations can support each other.

Bachelor students will get the opportunity to learn from the different associations and expertise.

Master students, on the other hand, will learn more about CHEOPS and what this association can

do for them.

4.3 Archiving

The digital archive of CHEOPS contains a lot of knowledge and information about various issues

concerning the association. For example, the large amount of scripts, transmission forms and

evaluations. Unfortunately, these files are archived in an unstructured way, whereby the search for

information takes a lot of time and knowledge cannot be transferred optimally or gets lost. Also,

the physical archive of the association is unstructured and is being used more as a storage facility

than as an archive.

A clear inventory of all files will provide a solution for the loss of documents in the archive of

CHEOPS. So, the upcoming year there will be looked at a way to organise the files from the past in

a clear way and store new files easily and better structured. Besides that, it is important for the

board, committees or members to have quick and easy access to the needed knowledge and

information from the archive. A few other study associations of the university are already using

these kind of inventory systems. Therefore it is beneficial to consult them about the start-up and

the usage of the systems they apply. For example, an inventory system provides where to find both

digital and physical files, and gives some information about the searched subject.

5. Board

During the study-year 2016-2017 a board consisting of six members will further develop CHEOPS,

Study association of the Built Environment. This chapter will illustrate the distributions within the

board trough functions and every member of the board will give a personal explanation how they

will fulfill their role within the board. A personal introduction will follow in chapter 10.

5.1 Chairman – Martijn Vegt

The chairman has an important position within the association. He must keep everything

structured during consultation and policy-making. He should also be able to temporarily take over

other board functions and ensure chairing the General Members Meetings. Finally, he should act as

the representative of the association to external parties and represent the board.

With great pleasure I may have the honorable task to be this years chairman. To be a representative

of the association is very enjoyable and also provides a healthy dose of excitement. After dividing our

tasks I think that every member of the board is in the right spot to perform his or her tasks. I can learn

a lot this year. Both from my committees and policies as also from my board members. Together with

them I'll make a wonderful year in which we will work hard and will enjoy a lot too. I will commit

myself to the policy article Cooperation with sub-associations. Also, I will organize the faculty parties

together with the new freshmen of the Faculty Party Committee and as responsible board member of

the Glow project I will take place in this collaboration between CHEOPS and Lucid which will show the

project at this year’s official Glow route. I will also commit myself as responsible board member for

the SkyBar! Upgrade. As well I’ll count the Excursion Committee to my responsibilities, with which I

hope to provide a fantastic multi-day tour in Europe.

5.2 Secretary/Vice-chairman – Alissa Los

The Secretary/Vice-chairman is the right hand of the chairman within the board. She cares about

the minutes of the board meetings and General Members Meetings, takes care of the incoming and

outgoing post and is responsible for the members administration. Besides this, the Secretary/Vice-

chairman coordinates the publicity within the association. Globally, the Secretary/Vice-chairman

will possess the same qualities as the chairman, but will be less in the picture. Concluding, the

Secretary/Vice-chairman needs to distinguish more between what is important and what is less

important, create the big picture and sort out information.

I’ve had several predecessors for the change of the function, because of the new structure of the

function secretary. I am excited about the new structure and look forward to be the new secretary. I

think I can learn a lot from my committees. The Promotion Committee will give me new insights into

the programs I have to work with, I will commit myself to the Ski-initiative Schneeops, and enjoy

organizing the study trip. I will also work on the policy article Cooperation with the sub-associations.

Altogether, I am looking forward to the next year and I will also start the year with positive thoughts!

5.3 Treasurer – Merel van Hooren

The treasurer monitors the financial affairs of committees, sub associations and podia and

manages the financial affairs of the association. Therefore, the treasurer should be able to

communicate well with the rest of the board and the committees. Furthermore, she should think

ahead and anticipate to opportunities in the future. She should have a critical view, be organized

and be firm.

Policy plan thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment

12

The function treasurer will become a huge challenge for me, but a good one that I have a need for.

This is exactly the function where I can develop myself the most: both on a personal level and on a

professional level. This is why I will learn all the ins and outs about the financial way of handling

things and how to coordinate them, but also how to be steady and how to back up my opinions. Next

to my board responsibilities, I’m also board representative of the CHEOPSx and the SkyBar!

Underground Committee. I want to be a candidate for the Departmental Council as well. Finally I will

be working on the policy article Archiving. So this will be enough variation between all the

administration!

5.4 Commissioner of education – Simone Tax

The main task of the Commissioner of Education (CO) is to represent the interests of the student.

Within the association the CO regulates almost everything that has something to do with

education. She supervises the consultative education and represents the students in the faculty.

She also follows the current state of affairs in the field of education and communicates this to the

students. A CO must have a heart for education, be good listener, be able to give a clear view and

to stimulate long-term processes.

If I look at the qualities mentioned above, I surely think that this function is right for me. I have done

the P- and B-Council myself and I’m looking forward to being the board representative of these

committees. The Master Council is new for me, but I think it will be interesting, regarding to our

second policy article. Next to these educational committees, I am excited to represent the students of

this faculty as good as possible and to improve education together with many different people. To be

able to sometimes escape from all the educational stuff, I will also be the board representative of

Plugged Festival Committee and the Congress Committee. Two committees that I am really looking

forward to. Finally, together with Daan, I will be responsible for CHEOPS_35.

5.5 Commissioner of professional relations – Sven Thijsen

The Commissioner of Professional Relations is responsible for the network of course related

contacts. He also coordinates and guides the course related contacts of the different committees

of CHEOPS. Next to that, he follows the state of affairs in the field of course related activities to

monitor the quality of these activities.

The responsibilities of the Commissioner of Professional Relations have become less widespread, this

means I can invest more time in making contact with new parties and organizing other course

related activities. Looking at our policy plan, I will focus on Cooperation with the sub-associations.

With a lot of course related committees this year there is a lot to organize and learn. Besides that I will

take place in the Congress Committee, the Activity Committee and the Introduction Committee. All

these committees are new for me and offer a lot of challenges.

5.6 Commissioner of public relations – Daan Kropman

The Commissioner of Public Relations (CPR) will manage the contact with companies and

institutions, maintain them and improve where possible. The CPR will be the first responsible for

recruiting financial support for the association and its activities. The CPR should be able to

negotiate well and present itself as a reliable partner on behalf of the association. The

Commissioner of Public Relations must be able to clearly indicate what he stands for and he must

be business minded.

Policy plan thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment

13

For as far as I can remember, I have always enjoyed giving presentations, socializing and

expanding my social network. This is why I am really looking forward to fulfilling the role of CPR

this year. This year I will be working on the policy article CHEOPS_35 from which I can get a lot of

satisfaction. For me it is interesting to engage in conversations with other associations and

companies on this issue and therefor I look forward to hear the opinions and interests of the

members. I will commit myself to the Chepos Committee, the 24UP Committee, the Introduction Camp

Committee and of course the Acquisition Committee. I am looking forward to learning lots of things

on many different levels and I will start this year very enthusiastic and with lots of energy.

6.2 General Members Meeting (GMM)

The General Members Meeting will be organized by the board at least three times in the coming

year. During this meeting the board will inform and update the members about different subjects

concerning the association and her activities. For example the financial overview, the year-

calendar and specific subjects which are of importance within the association at that time. During

the year, a intermediate financial overview will be presented twice. The collective of members

present during this general members meeting will be called the GMM. For certain affairs the board

needs permission from the GMM. The GMM is also a means to collect feedback from the members.

6.3 Board Transmission Committee (BTC)

The Board Transmission Committee consists of the members of the previous board. During the

coming year they will keep an eye on the board on both a formal and informal level. When it deems

to be necessary they will advise the board on daily board related affairs. This will improve the

transmission from the 30th to 31st board. The Board Transmission Committee for the study year

2016-2017 has been composed as follows:

- Neeltje Voesenek Chairman 30th board

- Julius Oosting Secretary/Vice Chairman 30th board

- Jelle Versteege Treasurer 30th board

- Stan de Bie Commissioner of Education 30th board

- Alex Donkers Commissioner of Professional Relations 30th board

- Pim Labee Commissioner of Public Relations 30th board

6.4 Advisory Council (AC)

The advisory council is an advisory organ, just like the BOC. The AC advises the board mainly on

matters concerning the policy plan and long term policy. The AC consists of multiple former board

members. To ensure continuity, members are spread evenly through multiple boards. The advisory council for the study year 2016-2017 has been composed as follows:

- Robin Aerts Commissioner of Education 24th board - Yvonne Peters Treasurer 25th board - Irene Scheperboer Chairman 26th board - Anne Grave Secretary 27th board - Wouter Loomans Chairman 28th board - Rikke de Jonge Mulock Houwer Commissioner of Professional Relations 28th board

6.5 Audit The Audit is a body that supervises the financial accountancy of CHEOPS. This committee consists

of former treasurers and one external person. The audit for the study year 2016-2017 has been composed as follows:

- Anique Kuijpers Treasurer 27th board - Daniëlle Cornelissen Treasurer 28th board - Anouk van Helvoirt Treasurer 29th board - Jelle Versteege Treasurer 30th board - Aukje Hefting Member

6.6 CHEOPS Sub-association and Podiums Council (CSPC)

The council between CHEOPS, the sub-associations and the podiums takes place at the CHEOPS,

Sub-associations and Podiums Council. Every sub-association sends a representative to represent

the sub-associations. The chairman and secretary of CHEOPS also join this council. The sub-associations are:

⦁ AnArchi Architecture ⦁ KOers Structural Design ⦁ Mollier Building Physics and Services ⦁ Of CoUrsE! Construction Management & Engineering ⦁ SERVICE Real Estate Management & Development ⦁ SUPport Building Technology & Construction Technology ⦁ VIA Urban Design & Planning

Presently there are no podiums. To hold on to the possibility to found a podium, the name of the

CSPC will not be changed.

6.7 Other councils

Federatie Studieverenigingen Eindhoven – Martijn Vegt and Alissa Los The Federatie Studieverenigingen Eindhoven (FSE) is the organ in which the 10 study associations

of Eindhoven University of Technology consult on each other. The goal of this organ is to keep each

other updated on matters on a university wide level, as well as matters with the associations.

Usually two member of the board attend this monthly meeting.

Departmental Council – Merel van Hooren

The Departmental Council is the representative body of the Faculty of the Built Environment. This

council had the task to follow the general course of events within the faculty with a critical point of

view. This council had the ability to send proposals and announce perspectives towards the faculty

board. A Departmental council cannot function without the support of the students of our faculty.

To assure for this, a board member will be electable for the Departmental council.

Opleidings Commissie Bouwkunde - Simone Tax

The Opleidings Commissie Bouwkunde (OCB) is installed by the faculty board. This council has the

legal task to give unsolicited advice to the Departmental council, the faculty board, the

educational director and the Units about everything concerning the education within our faculty.

The commissioner of Education is the representative of CHEOPS that takes a seat in this council.

Policy plan thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment

17

Studenten Advies Orgaan - Simone Tax

The Student Advies Orgaan is formed by all the study associations, which all deliver one student,

the rector and a representative of the STU. The subjects will be brought up about education,

accommodation, introduction week etcetera. These are often new developments in the field of

education, the policy plan of the TU/e or the evaluation of already introduced plans. The students

give their feedback. The commissioner of education of CHEOPS will take part in the SAO to

represent the CHEOPS board. Also, the SAO will organise the central Teacher of the Year Election.

Advies Commissie Bacheloronderwijs - Simone Tax

The Advisory Committee of the Bacheloreducation (ACB) is composed by the Commissioners of

Education of every study association and the teacher representatives from the OC’s. The meeting’s

chairman will be Bas Luttink. Also the Dean of the Bachelor College, Lex Lemmens and a policy

employee of the Bachelor College, Gerard van de Watering, will try to be present at this meeting.

The secretary of this meeting will be Jessica van de Ven. In this meeting especially OERs and procedures will be approved. Furthermore four working

groups will be erected from this meeting, which will investigate specific subjects and report this.

These working groups contain both students and teachers.

Curriculum Commissie - Simone Tax

The CuCo will be completely composed by teachers and the Commissioner of Education of

CHEOPS. In this meeting Harry Timmermans, Dean Graduate School will be the chairman. The

secretary will be Mariëtte Heijnman or Petrie Daems. In this meeting decisions will be taken about the curriculum. The objective of this committee is to

secure the curriculum.

Monitorgroep Bachelor College - Simone Tax

The Monitorgroep Bachelor College is composed by all Commissioners of Education, the Dean of

the Bachelor College, Lex Lemmens and policy plan employee of the Bachelor College, Gerard van

de Watering. In this meeting every Commisioner of Education gets the opportunity to ask

questions about the Bachelor College. Furthermore there will also be an opportunity to give

remarks on the education.

7. Committees

Almost everything created, organized and executed within CHEOPS is done by one of the many

committees. Because of this it is important for the board to set goals for these committees. These

goals serve as a guideline for the committee members and the board representative. Below follows

an overview of all committees of CHEOPS and their goals for the coming year.

7.1 Course related committees

24UP Committee - Daan Kropman

In the course of the years, the 24 hour design contest (24UP) has become a well-known and

popular concept. The design contest that lasts for 24 hours and is judged by an expert jury, has

acquired a status that conveys CHEOPS’ professionalism. The 24 Hour Design Contest will be held

in December of 2016.

Activity Committee - Sven Thijsen

The Activity Committee, mainly existing out of freshmen, organises small activities like course

related excursions or lectures. These excursions and lectures are interesting and easy accessible

for all members.

Chepos Committee - Daan Kropman

The Chepos is the architectural magazine of CHEOPS. The last couple of years a lot of time was

spent to improve the quality of the Chepos and with the new lay-out the professionality has

increased a lot.

CHEOPSx Committee - Merel van Hooren The lectures and debates which are organised by the CHEOPS Qafé Committee are a well-known

phenomenon. Unfortunately the name isn’t so well-known anymore, so the committee got a new

name last year: the CHEOPSx Committee. The lectures are visited by a broad audience of students,

architects, officials and teachers. Therefore CHEOPSx has a familiar name in the architectural field.

The CHEOPSx-evening are organised three evenings during the year. Suiting themes, suiting

locations and interesting speakers will be searched for.

Congress Committee – Sven Thijsen and Simone Tax

On March 12, 2015 the congress 'Shifting Perspectives' took place for the first time. This year, once

again a committee will be launched to organize such a conference. On this day well-known

speakers will share their views on a particular topic to the public. The congress will take place in

the academic year of 2017/2018.

Excursion Committee - Martijn Vegt This college year the Excursion Committee will organise one excursion abroad. This excursion will

go to a country inside Europe. The excursion will probably be of a smaller scale than last year,

because there will also be a Studytrip Committee. During the excursion, the students will be shown

all aspects of the Built Environment.

Glow Committee - Martijn Vegt

In February 2016, the Glow Commission, a cooperation between CHEOPS and Lucid was set up.

The purpose of this committee is to make an sculpture that will be shown along the official Glow

route in November 2016. The trail passes through the campus of the TU/e and CHEOPS and Lucid

will be there all week.

7.2 Educational Committees

Propaedeutic Council – Simone Tax The P-council is a committee, composed by first years, for the first-year education. Experiences

with projects and colleges can be discussed this year. When problems come forward and

complaints are acknowledged, it is the job of the committee to find a solution for these in a good

way. Also, the P-council organises subject evaluations with a college-attendance structure. This is why

the committee got a more important role within the care of the quality of the education of the

faculty. However, the evaluation takes a lot of time. This is why it has to be clear at all times that

CHEOPS looks at the organisation of evaluations every year, depending on the amount of

subscriptions for this committee. Next to the evaluation of subjects, each year the P-council

organises the LEGO Challenge and the Parents Day.

Bachelor Council - Simone Tax The B-council has the same kind of role as the P-council, but the committee focusses on the

curriculum of the bachelor. This committee consists mainly of second and third year Built

Environment students who follow the bachelor program. It is important for the B-council that the

committee is a mix of different years and different profiles. Just like the P-council this committee

works with and takes care of complaints and wishes within the education. Since two years the B-council organises subject evaluations with a college-attendance structure.

This is why it has to be clear at all times that CHEOPS looks at the organisation of evaluations every

year, depending on the amount of subscriptions for this committee. Next to the evaluation of

subjects, each year the B-council organises the Teacher of The Year Election. This election has

grown a lot the past couple of years. We plan on continuing this growth.

Master Council – Simone Tax The Master Council is a council between the different education related bodies. In this council

subjects will be discussed which are of importance faculty wide and information will be

interchanged between the different associations. The committee often consist of representatives

of the ESR, Groep Eén, the Commissioners of Education of the sub-associations, the chairman of

the FR, a student-member of the Faculty Board of the Built Environment, Mariëtte Heijman

(coordinator master education) and other interested people. Last year it has been stated that the Master Council has lost some challenge for the improvement

of the education. This is why two years ago in consultation with Jan van der Meulen it was decided

to look at the successful feedback of the subject evaluations in the bachelor and to implement this

in the master. Last year there has been made great progress and we will continue that this year.

The challenge is to give clear feedback from the different subject evaluations to the faculty. besides CHEOPS organisesd, in collaboration with the faculty, the Bouwkunde Branche Activity for

the second year students. This inititiative of the sub-assocations has been set up due to the

demand to create more contact between the sections and bachelor students. During this day,

student will go on an excursion for the three different B.A.U.-directions, organised by the

concerning sub-associations. The challenge for this year is to bring a better organisation in this

excursion.

7.3 Leisure Committees

Faculty Party Committee - Martijn Vegt This freshmen committee is responsible for the organization of the Building Department Parties.

There will be four parties this year. There will be a possibility to organize another activity, but this

will be looked at with the committee.

SkyBar! Underground Committee - Merel van Hooren Every Thursday afternoon the SkyBar! Underground Committee organizes a drink from 16 o clock

till 19 o’ clock in the basement of Vertigo (-1 and -2): The SkyBar! Underground. During this weekly

drink people will have the opportunity to enjoy a drink and a toasted sandwich. Multiple times a

year a theme drink will be organized. When the weather is nice, the drink will be held outside, at

the KOE-sculpture. The committee is responsible for the maintenance of the SkyBar! Underground. This year the SkyBar! Underground will have a new structure. This structure contains a core team

and 16 bartenders. The core team consists of a board representative (the treasurer), a chairman, a

secretary, a treasurer and someone who controls the stock. The other 16 bartenders are

represented by 4 old SkyBar! Underground members, and 10 new ones. This will make the SkyBar!

Underground Committee a continuous committee.

Plugged Festival Committee - Simone Tax After four years of success of Plugged Festival, the Festival will be organized again this year. The

Festival is an initiative of the SkyBar! Underground committee of 2011-2012 and is really

appreciated. The Festival is the perfect opportunity to chill and relax and has a nice atmosphere

with performances of bands and dj’s.

Introduction Week Committee - Sven Thijsen During the regular introduction days of the Technical University Eindhoven freshmen get to know

the city of Eindhoven, the study, the university and the student life. The faculty related program of

the Built Environment will be organized by the Intro Committee. This program is directed to make

the new students familiar with the daily flow of the faculty. The introduction days are the perfect

opportunity to show the new Built Environment students what CHEOPS stands for.

Introduction Camp Committee - Daan Kropman Besides the general introduction days of the university the Introduction Camp of the Built

Environment will be organized by CHEOPS at the beginning of the college year. The new freshmen

will learn more about CHEOPS in these three days and what committees they can apply for. These

days are filled with all kinds of leisure activities which are meant to stimulate the social contacts

between the new freshmen. The objective of this Camp is to recruit new active members for the

study association.

Policy plan thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment

22

7.4 Facility Committees

Acquisition Committee - Daan Kropman The Acquisition Committee of 2016-2017 has a new structure, organised in the year of 2015-2016.

This committee is a continuous committee. There will be searched for enthusiastic student who

will be busy with acquisition. These students are under supervision of the Commissioner of Public

Relations and will meet regularly.

Almanac Committee 30th board - Sven Thijsen

The almanac is the yearbook of CHEOPS. In this almanac the activities and committees of the board

year 2015-2016 will be described in a playful manner. The aim is that the almanac of the 30th board

will be issued during the dies of CHEOPS (December 12).

Almanac Committee 31st board - Sven Thijsen The 31st board will start collecting photos, videos, quotes and beautiful stories for the almanac of

the year 2016-2017 , from the start of the academic year. Halfway the year we will launch a

committee to make this almanac.

Do It Yourself Committee - Martijn Vegt The Do It Yourself Committee has the function to create and sustain the interior pieces for the

CHEOPS-spaces.

Promotion Committee - Alissa Los The Promotion Committee is busy with the promotion of activities and services of CHEOPS.

Committees are able to file a request for promotion material. Also a member of another committee

instead of the Promotion Committee can take place in one of their meetings, so they can discuss

the promotion of the concerning committee.

SkyBar! Upgrade Committee – Martijn Vegt

The SkyBar! Upgrade committee was set up during the academic year 2015/2016 aiming to

upgrade the SkyBar! Underground on different levels. In that year the bar furniture was

customized. The committee will continue and examines what things in the SkyBar! Underground

will be addressed coming year.

Policy plan thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment

23

7.5 Initiatives

A year is long and a lot happens in an association. This is why ideas for new activities may arise,

which can be an enrichment for the association. For this reason there will be a possibility for new

initiatives which can be reported to the board. Until now, one initiative has been reported.

Ski-initiative – Alissa Los

In the board year 2015-2016 the Ski-initiative was carried out for the first time. This year again, the

Ski trip will be held during the Carnival vacation.

Childhood dream As a little boy I was always interested in history and I wanted to be

an archaeologist. Until an archaeologist devastated my dreams

by saying that there you earn almost nothing and you had to have

a lot of luck to be able to do a nice project. Later I wanted to be a

pilot, but since there aren’t many vacant pilot jobs I put that plan

aside too. At that time I was often designing my own dream house

of which I now and then made an improvement in my sketches. At that time I knew I wanted to be

an architect in which field I can hopefully find a job, if I stay studying long enough.

School career At primary school the Eerste Leidse Schoolvereniging I was friends with everyone. Learning was

easy for me and during recess we built corridors in the sandbox for our cars. In 8th grade I was very

excited to go to high school. A little more challenge and classes that get cancelled did sound great.

From the moment I started at the Stedelijk Gymnasium it became clear to me that that did not

occur as frequent as I hoped. After working hard for two years, I had to do the year over again

because I did not pass my classical language classes. At that moment I decided to go to a different

school and continue at the Atheneum. After the holidays I went to the 3rd class at the Vlietland

College where I chose an NT-profile in order to study engineering. There I completed my high

school career in four more years with good results.

University At first thought I always wanted to go studying in Delft. That was also a logical option for someone

coming from Leiden. But after I went to an information evening about Built Environment in

Eindhoven I decided to have a look in Eindhoven. Especially the bachelor college and pretty

campus appealed to me. After studying here for a day during a ‘meeloopdag’ I knew for sure, ‘I am

going to study in Eindhoven’. After the intro and the introduction camp I soon had a group of

friends which was very handy for someone without a place to live in Eindhoven. After couch surfing

for two weeks I finally found a place for myself where I could come home after studying or going

out.

After the first year projects I knew for sure, I'm going to design. This because I was got the most

enjoyment out of these projects and design-related subjects. The construction and science

subjects and me also didn’t seem to be a great combination . Partly due to that, I will start my

board year with 100 ECTS-credits.

CHEOPS career Already before the intro started, I had signed up for the Built Environment Introduction Camp. A

camp with other freshmen did sound like fun. During the camp I found out what CHEOPS had to

Policy plan thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment

offer. Yet I wanted to start my freshman year not too busy so I could focus on studying. So I

decided to not join a committee in the first half year. I did made the agreement that I would collect

all the intro dungarees of Cheops. After half a year I signed up with a group of friends for the camp

committee, where so many registrations were submitted that two friends could only join the

committee as cook. In my second year, I started with two committees. The SkyBar! Underground

Committee, where I had lots of fun both on a barstool and behind the bar and Plugged Festival

where I stood proudly looking at the decorations while enjoying the music, as chairman of the

Department of Furnishing. In addition, I started mid-year at the Intro Committee with which I had

a third memorable intro period. The latter, of course, thanks to my board mates with whom I,

decked out in my third, bright green dungarees enjoyed the whole week.

Board year

From September 8 we all start with our own function which I think fits all of us good. As the

chairman, I expect to learn a lot this year. I hope to meet new people and gain experiences and

knowledge that I will have benefits from for the rest of my life. Besides that, with the six of us and a

lot of other people, we are going to have lots of fun. A year in which our personalities grow and a

year in which our relationship will get even closer. A year I look forward to and of which I'm very

excited to get started.

After my board year After my board year I want to focus initially on my bachelor's degree. What I'm going to do after

that exactly I do not know, but continuing studying seems a logical option. However, I would like to

remain an active CHEOPS member. I want to devote myself to the BOC and the Advisory Council

and perhaps you may also see me behind the bar again sometime.

Childhood dream I always wanted to do something where I could draw. And if your

mother is an architect, you always see those beautiful drawings. It

was that time I thought, I too want to be an architect. I never

thought of another profession. Slowly I grew to this profession.

School career I always liked to go to school. Not necessarily because you learn so much, or the homework you

had to make, but the atmosphere around it. I was the person who got along with everyone, often

made my homework, but my grades weren’t that great. I have chosen my subjects in high school

that were required for this study. At that time I already knew I wanted to study the built

environment.

University Randwijk is just a small village, a hamlet you could say. And then I moved to Eindhoven, the big

city! There was a time I hesitated between Eindhoven and Delft. I thought Eindhoven had too much

mathematics, which isn’t my strongest feature. Still, I chose to study here because it is much

broader. I could still go in any direction within my study. At first I was afraid that I would have

trouble connecting with other people, but the first week we already had a group of friends to hang

out with. It is interesting to study and learn new things, the atmosphere and the people are just as

important to me.

CHEOPS career I signed up for the built environment introduction days, that was the first time I got acquainted

with CHEOPS. I did not know what CHEOPS was and did for the students. Until I became a member

of the faculty party committee. I was persuaded by some friends and we organized some great

parties that year. The second committee was the built environment introduction days. The year

after I joined the SkyBar! Underground committee, and the faculty party committee for a second

time. So I’ve joined several committees, before I went to the board information evenings. I decided

to be a candidate, and now I am here, behind my laptop preparing the change of the board.

Board year First of all, I am looking forward to my board year! Together with the other five board members, we

will make it a fantastic year. A year in which I will learn a lot and above all make a lot of fun. I will

enter the year with positive thoughts.

After my board year It’s not my thing to look far in the future. Everybody has things they want to do, a bucket list. But

after I finished the board year, I will finish my bachelor. Which master I want to do is still unclear to

me.

Childhood dream

Many professions have crossed my mind: teacher in French,

communication expert like my mom, editor in chief of Vogue…

But dog breeder always was on top of my list. Architecture,

Urbanism and Building Sciences just came up one year before my

exam year. I though math was pretty interesting, but not that

interesting that I wanted to make a profession out of it. So I

decided to combine engineering and creativity, that is why right now I follow the track Architecture

and Urbanism.

School career I went to the Bernardinuscollege in Heerlen, very different than the university here. I followed

subject in Nature & Engineering and Nature & Health, so - me being very changeable - I could do

anything I want in terms of studies after I graduated. I really liked math and every language

available at my high school – this is why I was extremely glad to read fifteen books for my literature

list for Dutch – but I couldn’t discover a future in the alpha side that appealed to me.

University Leaving Limburg, the province I grew up in, was namely in the beginning very exciting. My parents

raised me pretty protective in Voerendaal, a little village next to Heerlen. Experiencing the student

live, becoming independent, was a big change for me. First, I really wanted to go to the university

of Delft. But I switched the week before intro and never regretted that since. I really like the culture

in Noord-Brabant and I found my happy place at CHEOPS and the hockey club. Also the wide

orientation on the technical university here is really great, you can decide for yourself what you

like and what you don’t.

CHEOPS career My career at CHEOPS was stimulated at the Build Environment Introduction Camp. I

enthusiastically applied to the P-council, a little step but this is how I learned to know the culture

between CHEOPS. This is why, in my second year, I applied to three different committees: the Prom

Committee, the SkyBar! Underground and the Excursion Committee. The SkyBar! Underground

really made my passion for CHEOPS grow a lot and the choice to be the board of CHEOPS was,

because of that committee, pretty easy to make.

Board year

First I really want to put a great year up with my lovely board friends. Second, I will, as board

representative of the SkyBar! Underground, be present at the bar on Thursday afternoons with

hopefully, a lot of fun just like last year. This is why my purpose for this committee is to have the

same great year as I had last year.

Policy plan thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment

29

After my board year I really want to finish my bachelor and after that… I don’t know. I actually want too much I think:

travelling, a totally different study, a master on the Built Environment in Delft… But CHEOPS will

always be my place to be, especially because I will be in the Audit the next upcoming years!

Childhood dream I’ve always said that I wanted to become a teacher. In primary

school, I wanted to become a primary school teacher and in high

school, I wanted to teach geography or biology. However, already

at the age of 8, my mum said that I would become an architect in

the future, because I was good at math and I was creating and

tinkering all the time. Of course, I did not agree at all, because I

was not going to do exactly what my mum said I should do, right!? Until, in the sixth grade, I visited

an open day at the faculty of the built environment in Eindhoven. She was right after all…

School career My school career went fine. In elementary school, everything went easily. I found the courses easy

and did a lot next to my school work, like acting, playing the saxophone, gymnastics (not a good

idea with my height and flexibility), tinkering and playing with friends. High school went also

smoothly. It was busier and I worked harder, but I got rewarded for that with high grades. At that

time, I played in different bands, still acted, played volleyball and did fun stuff with friends. I

passed my exams without any trouble and I still have lots of friends and nice memories from my

high school period.

University At the day of the deadline, I decided to go studying Architecture Building and Planning and not

Biology. The process of making that choice was difficult for me, since I have a wide interest and

wanted to do everything. Fortunately, after half a year, I could conclude that I had made the right

choice. However, the problem with choices remained. I follow courses in architecture and

urbanism, but also in construction and building physics. I like it all and I’m good at it. Next to my

studies, I acted, did the honors program, worked as a tutor and hung out with my friends, family

and roommates.

CHEOPS career Because I wanted to get to know lots of people, I directly subscribed for the Built Environment

Introduction Camp. This was the first time I came in touch with CHEOPS and I immediately liked it:

nice people, relaxed atmosphere and everything was green! After the camp, I directly subscribed

for the P-council, which I really liked. Therefore, I subscribed for another committee in February:

the Vertigo Party. It was kind of a shock and absolutely not my intention that I became the

chairman. But after a really nice year, in which I learned a lot, I threw an amazing party together

with my fellow committee members. In my second year, I subscribed for the B-council and

Plugged. Mainly the second one was a really good choice, since I love live music and bands.

Next to all the committee work, I’ve also made lots of good friends at CHEOPS.

Policy plan thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment

31

Board year I’m really looking forward to my board year, in which I will be there for CHEOPS with my fellow

board members. I do not know how everything will go exactly, but I am sure it will be a fantastic

year in which I, together with the rest of my board, will get to know many new people and learn

lots of new things.

After my board year I hope that, during my board year, I will find out what direction to choose, because I do not have a

clue right now. The only things I know for sure are that I will finish my bachelor and stay an active

member at CHEOPS.

Childhood dream Having a real childhood dream was never really my style.

Although I’ve always been fascinated about building and

designing things.

School career My school career went quite good and I found joy in something of

every course. This resulted in the fact that I wanted to have a wide

development. When choosing a study direction, studying architecture, urbanism and building

sciences seemed to be what I was looking for.

University Shifting my life from Nijmegen to Eindhoven didn’t happen that sudden. The first half a year I still

lived with my parents. Later on it seemed to be that travelling three hours a days was not as ideal

as I thought it would be. Ever since that I live in Eindhoven. A half year after that I decided to also

play hockey and work my part-time job in Eindhoven instead of Elst.

CHEOPS career

After the introduction week and the introduction camp I became part of a group of friends who

coincidently also liked CHEOPS. Since then it only became more fun to be actively involved with

the association. In my first year I helped organizing the faculty parties and the introduction camp.

The SkyBar! Underground was an important part of my CHEOPS career in my second year of study.

In that committee I had the honor to be chairman and also contribute to the SkyBar! Upgrade

working group. Furthermore I was a member of the promotion committee. I really liked the

assignments and other members. If possible I would really like to relive the famous PromoCie,

Glow walk. A committee in which I still participate is the almanac committee of the 30th board.

Year on the board What the upcoming year will bring is still uncertain, what I do know is we have a lot of interesting

activities planned. Other than that I’m really looking forward to alert freshmen, other students and

external relations how CHEOPS can be positive for them.

After my year on the board

When the year is finished I really hope the six of us have accomplished great things, learned a lot

and a lot of people happy. After that the planning still is to go back to studying.

Childhood dream When I was a in kindergarten, I was always fascinated by

superheroes. It was my childhood dream to become one of them.

Unfortunately this seemed a bit too ambitious which gave me no

other option than adapting this plan somewhat. Next to

superheroes, I found everything related to building very

interesting. Therefore, picking a study

was not that hard. I signed up for the study of the Built Environment here in Eindhoven as soon as I

could and I have never regretted it since.

School career

In primary school, I was always the one who was telling lots and lots of stories. I was very

enthusiastic about all kinds of things. From the first grade on, I had several presentations a year

about a lot of different subjects like dinosaurs, the universe, rabbits, gemstones, architecture, and

so on. I always enjoyed talking and giving presentations and because I did not have to put lots of

effort into my schoolwork, there was plenty of time to do so. During high school, I was also very

busy with things next to my courses; I took part in Cambridge English classes, gave several

presentation courses and I organized some other activities.

University

After high school, I really wanted to start with the study of the Built Environment, no matter what.

However, I did not know what field of the built environment I found most interesting yet, so I

chose to start studying in Eindhoven, which I still do with great pleasure. As always I wanted to do

things next to my study. This is why I became an active member at CHEOPS in the second half of

my first year and why I am really exited in starting this year as a board member of CHEOPS!

CHEOPS career In the first half of my first year I was not an active member at CHEOPS, because I heard that the

study would be very time-consuming, especially in the beginning. Nevertheless, some of my

friends already joined committees and eventually I was persuaded by Puck, to join a committee in

the second half of the year. I became a member of the Gala Committee, which I enjoyed a lot and

thereby became excited about other committees. Together with Puck, we were the star cooks at

the BID and I was a member of the Excursion and Acquisition committee.

Policy plan thirty-first board of CHEOPS, Study Association of the Built Environment

34

Board year Besides being very excited about starting this year, I also see the upcoming year as a good

opportunity to get to know the built environment a lot better. Next to that, I hope to get to know

many new people and to expand my social network. I expect to learn a lot of things on many

different levels and most of all having a lot of fun with the board and the rest of the members at

CHEOPS.

After my board year

I do not know exactly what to do after my board year. One of the things I will do is putting a lot of

effort in finishing my bachelor in the first year, but after that we will see what will be next. Of

course I want to stay an active member of CHEOPS and commit myself to the BOC and the RVA.
