ANA HERRERA ORTEGAPortfolio 2006-2013
This is a selection of works made by Ana Herrera between 2006 and 2013. Most of them are small-sized drawings (normally not larger than A4) in which a variety of media have been used, namely graphite, India ink, watercolours, coloured pencils, wax crayons, stencils and spray paint.
Ana is especially interested in the human figure and its stylisation in various degrees, which sometimes bestows her characters animal, alien, vegetal or insect-like features. The atmosphere that surrounds them, either dreamlike and melancholic or surreal and psychedelic (or even dark and somewhat ominous, although usually with a certain degree of humour) radiates from these same characters. This atmosphere may be perceived both in the backgrounds and the designs and decorations of the character’s clothes.
Ana is particularly keen on curved shapes, waving and zigzagging lines, organic and plant-inspired design and detailed and thorough work. She recognises among her influences some aspects of surrealism, cubism, psychedelia, art nouveau and 19th century illustration.

CVShe was born in Seville in 1985, where she is currently based. She is a self-taught artist, as her education is language and literature-oriented, holding a BA in English Studies from the University of Seville and having also studied during one year at the University of York.
Although she began to develop her own style since her teenage days, it was not until 2011 that some of her work began to appear in a quarterly publication on literature and other forms of art, known as Cuadernos de Creación, by the Seville-based publishing house Palimsesto2.0. In 2012 she illustrated Instantes, a haiku collection by the author Jesús Martín Camacho, also published by Palimpsesto2.0.
In November 2012 she took part in a collective exhibition entitled Drawing Area, organised by El Cubo Soma, an art space in Seville run by the artist Javier León Pérez. Here she showcased some drawings from the series Murder in Margate, inspired by her one-year stay in this seaside resort in the south east of England.
Since then she has taken part in several projects. One of them is Alien Mugshots, a collaboration for the science-fi comic The Future Beings, by the British comic writer Paul Hatcher, coming soon. The other one, The Owl’s Dream, is a personal project, an illustrated story with bilingual text in Spanish and Swedish.
