After Namaxia was hit hard by a typhoon, they needed a national elementary school that maintained both their traditions and a bal-anced education. Keeping this in mind, I used the most common symbol of the Paiwan tribe, representing the protection of the gods: the diamond. This makes up the overall design of Namaxia Elemen-tary School, bringing their cultural traditions into elementary educa-tion.

NA MA SIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Location:Because the national elementary school located in Namaxia village, Kaohsiung, was destroyed by a typhoon, they decided to rebuild the school on the hillside of Namax-ia, surrounded by mountains and forests, with a lot of sunlight. It faces a canyon river and a 4 meter-wide road connects the foot of the mountain with the top.

Design concept:The majority of people living in Namaxia village are aboriginal Taiwanese. The totem of their settlement is quite unique, showing a snake with hundred feet as their patron saint of the aboriginals, and the people will paint a diamond-shaped grid on their walls in the hope that the ancestral spirits will protect their homes. Because of this, the trans-forming shape of the diamond-shaped grid is used in the design of Namaxia Elemen-tary School, implying that this is also a safe place protected by the ancestral spirits.

Distribution functionality:The classroom is built on the upper hillside, because the slope is gentler here, as well as a large number of native trees, so that in the event of heavy rainfall the drainage of the upper slope is better, and that when the steeper lower slope produces smal land-slides, the teachers and students can take refuge indoors.

Page 8: Portfolio_Ting Chun Lee

Introduction of the functions:

The Namaxia Elementary School has a library, teacher dormitories, student dormito-ries, classrooms, a playground and a meeting room. The lobby of the library has a six meter-high ceiling, with a ramp going up to a mezzanine floor at three meters, so the moving lines are smoother. Furthermore, the library faces south so there is plenty of natural light, while a wooden grill prevents strong light being reflected from the hill-side.The teacher dormitories have a diamond-shaped veranda in the center, surrounded by rooms in a grid-like pattern, ensuring that each room has plenty of sunlight and good ventilation. The veranda serves as a place where the teachers can meet and relax, and has a living room, a kitchen and a small patio.

Page 9: Portfolio_Ting Chun Lee

Ideas and perceptions:

What attracted me most in this case of Namaxia Ele-mentary, was the use of variation in height and slope of the hillside to change the function of the configuration. Furthermore, designing an elementary school with local characteristics, where the form of the building come to-gether with the characteristic culture and sacred totem of the aboriginals.

Page 11: Portfolio_Ting Chun Lee

The site is located along the Taipei Railroad Development Axis, and is connected to the central station and the cultural district that re-used several empty spaces. The site forms the end point of the fu-ture central green axis, attracting even more locals. But at this mo-ment, there is a highway running alongside the park, so that people will not go inside. Our main question was how to create another type of boundary so that it would attract people.

PET-FRIENDLY RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX

Page 17: Portfolio_Ting Chun Lee

The Pet-friendly residential complex is designed for people who are renting an apartment in the city and keep pets. Pets that are kept in apartments often feel depressed or stressed, because of the small space. The pet-friendly residential complex, however, is specifically de-signed to give dogs and small pets (e.g. cats) room for playing, so they can live a happy life at home.

Page 18: Portfolio_Ting Chun Lee

Location

It is located behind a triangle-shaped park in Taipei, in the old Tatung building. The requirements for this redesigning case is to bring new life to old buildings, and give a new function to the skeleton of the original building, hoping it brings increased diver-sity to the area. Originally, the building was 13 stories high, with a reinforced concrete structure.

Functions

An ever increasing number of people in Taipei keep-ing pets, so that pets take up residential space. This space gets smaller by the day, however, because of the dense population, making a Taipei appartment unsuitable for most pets. With this as a starting point, this is intended for people who want pets but don’t have enough money to buy a whole house, but can only rent a room or buy an appartment designed for young peo-ple. The pet appartment has a dog park, a one person - one dog suite, family suites, cat suites.

The green section marks the park in the middle of the appartment complex. Above the pet suites is a roof, that provides a large green space for the dogs to run around. On the roof is 1m-thick soil, so that shallow-rooted trees can be plant-ed, providing shade on the roof. The drainage system is placed on the semi-outdoor space of the roof, so that mosquitos can’t breed eas-ily in the building (Taiwan is a sub-tropical country and mosquitos are often found alongside plants and water). The red section marks the area specifically designed for people keeping cats. Inside the room are storage cabinets with uneven stepped levels. From a structural point of view, the cat suites hang above the dog parks, so that one can see random appearances of the cat’s activities behind the glass of the stair in the suite standing in the dog park. The glass on the stair also provides the cat with a com-manding view of the horizon.

Functional storied suite

In this residential complex designed specifically for keeping pets inside, there are two types of suites. A is designed for residents keeping dogs, and all have two floors, each floor having 4-6 A suites placed in a row. The courtyard of the suite’s door and the roof combined make a huge dog park, providing an environment where dogs can run around freely in the middle of the complex. B is designed for residents keeping cats and other small pets, and all have two floors. Every floor is divided in 3 units, where every unit comprises of 3 B suites. The B suites hang above the dog park, and keeping in mind the vertical moving line of cats, have a stepped study room and storage cabinets, so that the cats can play on the bookcase ladder, as well as look outside through the glass windows between the bookshelves.

Mobile Dog Shelter

Page 25: Portfolio_Ting Chun Lee

In response to the rapid growth of cities, and the growing stray dog population and densely-packed buildings that go with it, the goal is to have a mobile shelter that can house stray dogs from the city. Complying with the TNVR system, it provides the many stray animals of Taiwan with the possibility of receiving proper caring and animal welfare.

Page 26: Portfolio_Ting Chun Lee

Page 27: Portfolio_Ting Chun Lee

Concept

From unit to combinationThe concept of the mobile shelter is to over-turn the traditional shelter system, fixed and impossible to make adjustments in response to the number of cats and dogs. With more flexible container units combined into a shelter, the shelter building itself becomes adjustable.Keeping in mind that the number of stray cats and dogs is high everywhere in Taiwan, keeping in mind the densely populated cities and towns, and keeping in mind that a shelter can not be adjusted to the local conditions, mobile shelters in the cities can be small-volume container units that are put in parks or communities, so that the impact on the community is minimized. In larger rural areas, the shelter can choose an appropri-ate piece of land, and arrange the con-tainer units in an appropriate configuration according to the piece of land, as well as adjust the number of containers according to the number of cats and dogs.

Adoption containers have several facilities: washing basin for hands and feet, adoption room, and storage room. The adoption con-tainer has several levels, so that the space above and below can be used as adoption room. It’s wide opend and allowed people to join the adoption in all directions.

Medical containers are highly mobile operat-ing rooms, the containers primarily stay on the trailers, so they can move around. Inside the container, there is an air-conditioned operat-ing room, two operating tables, and medical instruments for neutering, so that two neutering operations can be performed at the same time. Furthermore, the container has a toilet, a recep-tion desk, and a waiting room. Next to the oper-ating room is a recuperation ward.Medical containers can maximize their poten-tial in remote rural areas were animal hospitals are scarce. They can neuter the pets of people in rural areas, while advocating the concept of TNVR at the same time, in this way serving as both a medical and educational container.

The function of volunteer containers is like that of a suite, having a bedroom, living room, bath-room and toilet, as well as a place to let the dogs rest and recuperate. The living room part and the adoption container can be connected to the medical container, becoming a multifunc-tional space.Under the bedroom, there is room for two large-sized dog cages, where dogs can recover after being neutered. Under the living room, there is room for dogs to sleep and a human interaction platform. The reservoir above the toilet collects rainwater to flush the toilet, following the con-cept of sustainability.

A one-unit shelter container can accommodate up to 12 dogs. The semi-outdoor space under the eaves has two storage spaces, where food, bowls, blankets, and so on can be stored. In addition, every container has a water tank and cleaning sink. In rainy Taiwan, the rain will flow through the trenches of the sloped roof and so into the water tank.

Modular containers

When you connect two rectangular containers to each other, you can place a square container in the corner they create to increase the available space; apart from this, the platform of the modular containers connects to the platform of the shelter containers, con-tinuing the moving line

The courtyard concept

Early Taiwanese rural architecture consists mainly of traditional courtyard houses, usually not more than one floor high. I kept this feature while developing the shel-ter so it could fit into the rural landscape, rather than stick out. In the open space formed by the surrounding shelter units, the dogs can communicate with each oth-er during regular play time, while also reflecting the feeling of people communicat-ing in the middle of the courtyard in traditional courtyard houses.
