Helping Maine families smile since 1918
2006 will be remembered as the year Community Dental opened the new Dental Health Center in Lewiston, Maine. After a busy summer of renovating the space at 177 Main Street, the ribbon cutting ceremony took place on the morning of September 5th, and the first patients were welcomed that afternoon. The first four months of operation proved our projections to be true, and going forward the Lewiston Dental Health Center will easily provide 8,000 dental services annually.
Overall it was a landmark year for the organization with over 28,000 services provided to 14,000 children and adults in Maine. Increased capacity at the Lewiston Dental Center, enabled a new program to begin in the fall, which assists low income uninsured families with receiving dental care for their children. The Portland Dental Health Center welcomed the first student extern from the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, with more students to follow in 2007.
Looking toward the future, Community Dental, in collaboration with the recently formed Western Maine Dental Health Access Coalition, is exploring ways to increase access to dental care for the people living in Oxford County. The organization as a whole continues to focus on the quality of care delivery by pursuing the accreditation process, and striving to improve and update the existing Dental Health Centers.
The success of 2006 was made possible by the dedication of our dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and support staff; the leadership of Executive Director Lisa Kavanaugh and her administrative staff; and the many donors and organizations that believe in and support Community Dental’s mission.

At Community Dental, our main goal is to increase access to dental health services by providing a welcoming, comfortable, affordable and professional environment. In addition, we strive to educate individuals and families regarding the importance of dental health as it relates to overall health, social interaction and employment opportunities.
The people who work for and support Community Dental and its mission believe that every child, adult and senior in Maine deserves the opportunity to experience quality, affordable dental care throughout their lives.
Our Founding Philosophy
Provide quality dental treatment for residents with enthusiasm and generosity without judgment or condescension.
Our Mission Community Dental provides accessible, affordable, quality, dental health services to children and adults.
A message from the President of the Board:
Community Dental has been providing dental health preventive and restorative services to people of all ages living in Androscoggin and Oxford Counties since 1988. In 2005 we began to address the increasing need for dental services evidenced by a growing waiting list of new patients and inquiries from area schools, Head Start and elderly organizations seeking affordable care for their children and clients. The decision was made to replace the aging and small dental center located in Auburn with a new, modern, larger dental health center located within the Lewiston/Auburn area.
The renovations of the space at 177 Main Street, Lewiston began in late June of 2006. On September 5th the new dental health center opened two weeks ahead of sched-ule. Today this seven dental chair facility, staffed by two dentists and three hygienists, has increased our ability to deliver quality dental care by 30%. The patient popula-tion is diverse in culture, age, occupation and household income. Currently 61% of our patients are 20 years of age or younger, living in households whose combined income is at or below 150% of the poverty level.
Another milestone – the opening of our new Lewiston Dental Health Center
During 2006, the Dental Health Center’s dentists and hygienists provided preventive, restorative and educational dental services to 5,581 children. Of this number, 91% were enrolled in the MaineCare program and/or living in households at 150% or below the poverty level.
Traveling to Head Start facilities throughout Cumberland County, our pediatric dentist examined very young children for early signs of dental decay, with instruction on “how to brush”. In February of 2006, Community Dental once again hosted the annual Give Kids a Smile Day where area volunteers joined us to provide 61 uninsured and under-served children with a day of free dental care.
“It didn’t hurt. Thank you!”
Caring for kids
Many adults, particularly the uninsured, face
challenges when seeking dental health care
including cultural barriers and interpreter
services, flexible handicapped accommodations,
and an income based Sliding Fee Scale. Some
travel long distances from rural areas of the
state or take public transportation to reach
a Dental Health Center. In 2006, Community
Dental provided over 6,500 adults with
accessible and affordable dental care, including
3,800 living in low income households without
dental insurance.
The Cumberland County Denture Program was
again a success in 2006. Volunteer dentists from
the Greater Portland area, and funding from
the United Way of Greater Portland, helped 16
individuals restore health and self esteem. Some
participants entered the program as a result of
the partnership between Community Dental
and the Portland Homeless
Program. It is rewarding to
know that lives are being
improved, and options for a
successful future created, as a
result of the local partnerships
and volunteers that make this
program possible.

Better health for seniors“I want to keep my teeth and will do almost anything to save them. I used to be able to afford to go to the dentist, but certain life changes made it impossible. I definitely plan to come back.”
More findings are emerging everyday that substantiate the link between poor dental health and a long list of physical diseases and life threatening conditions for seniors. Community Dental’s dentists and hygienists
are dedicated to the importance of maintaining dental health throughout a person’s lifetime. In 2006, just under 1,000 seniors aged 60 to 99 years received dental care services at the five Community Dental Health Center locations.
“You people are doing an exceptional job to make me look and feel better about myself. Thank you.”
A higher quality of life for adults
Androscoggin Children’s Free Care ProgramCommunity Dental has long realized the value of partnerships in pursuing our mission to restore and maintain dental health for people of all ages living and working in our service areas. In 2006 we were contacted by Molly and Cindy, the two hygienists who founded the non profit known as the Tooth Fairies. Their work includes visits to schools and Head Start locations to provide dental health education, screenings and molar sealants for school aged children.
The problem was the disconnect between identifying children experiencing dental disease and in immediate need of restorative dental services, and a way to link uninsured and low income parents with a dental home that could accept and heal their children. The new Lewiston Dental Health Center had the capacity, and the United Way of Androscoggin County the means, to establish the Androscoggin Children’s Free Care Program.
From October through December of 2006, 33 children received a total of 170 free dental health services at the Lewiston Center. We look forward to continuing this important program in 2007 and beyond with the dedication of the Lewiston Dental Health Center staff and the valued support of the Androscoggin County community.
