Respect Life

Memorial to Our Lady of Lourdes

Thursday, February 11th is an optional memorial to Our Lady of Lourdes who appeared to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. She was a young girl living in a remote area pf the Pyrenees. Our Lady appeared to her in a remote grotto outside of Lourdes. After many apparitions and Bernadette asking her who she was, the Lady said she was the

Immaculate Conception. Four years earlier, the Pope had defined the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. Our Lady requested a chapel to be built there and at that spot a spring bubbled forth. Since then, 70 recognized cures have happened and hundreds of others have been reported. To this day, many pilgrims visit the Shrine. Bernadette entered

a convent far from Lourdes and died in 1879.

Did Roe v. Wade legalize abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy?

Many people don’t realize that Roe v. Wade legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. Roe says abortions may not be restricted at all during the first three months and in the second three months may be regulated

only for the mother’s health. After “viability” Roe allows abortion to be prohibited but must make exceptions for the woman’s life or health. But in the companion case, Doe v. Bolton, the Court defined “health” to include “all factors – physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age – relevant to the well-being” of the mother. In most states, that is broad enough to permit virtually any abortion in the seventh, eighth, or ninth month of pregnancy if any

of these reasons is invoked. (From the Catholic Bishops’ website)

Do Something Beautiful for God (Teachings of St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta)

God loves me. I’m not here just to fill a place, just to be a number.

He has chosen me for a purpose.

I know it.

Prayer for our Troops

Almighty God and Father, hold our servicemen and women in your loving hands.

Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they

perform for us in our time and need. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Parish Appeal

On February 14th we take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which is a significant way to support the Universal Church. In part, this collection, supported by Catholics around the globe, helps the Holy Father reach out to people suffering in our world. It

also supports the ongoing activities of the Holy See. Please be as generous as your means allow.

Dear Parish Family of St. John the Evangelist,

Wednesday, February 17, 2021, is Ash Wednesday and the start of the Lenten Season.

Due to the pandemic that we have been living with, this Ash Wednesday will be different. Ashes will not be imposed on the forehead, they will be sprinkled on the head. This is how ashes are distributed by the Pope and the Church in Rome. This is being done as a safety measure to lessen the contact with one another. Also, there will be a Mass at 9 AM, at the end of which the ashes will be distributed. At Noon, 4 PM, and 7 PM, there will be a Liturgy of the Word. At the conclusion of them, ashes will be distributed.

Once you receive the Ashes, please, leave the Church. Do not congregate in the narthex and do not stay in Church.

There will be NO packets of Ashes to take home. All of this is being done to prevent handling of anything.

Remember, ashes are only a symbol, not a sacrament. If you do not receive them, it will not prevent you from entering into the penance of Lent.

The Lord, Jesus Christ, seeks a change of heart from us, not external practices.

God Bless and thank you for cooperating and understanding. Fr. Caruso
