Welcome to all at Mass today, especially to any visitors and particularly those who are here for the first time. Please take this sheet home with you which will tell you about

this week’s celebration and the activities during the week and also to remind you of our Liturgy today.

First Reading: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11 The people of Israel have given signs of repentance for their sins and receive from God a promise of consolation: the glory of the Lord will be revealed. In the midst of the crowds gathered on the banks of the river Jordan, Jesus will be seen as the last revealing of the salvation of God. Gospel: Luke 3:15-16,21-22 After his baptism in the Jordan, Jesus, in prayer, receives the anointing of the Holy Spirit to consecrate him to announce to the poor the Good News of their salvation.

TODAY’S MASS

“You are my Son the beloved”

The Holy Spirit of God came down upon Jesus, the beloved

Son of God at his baptism in the Jordan. The Spirit comes down on each one of us and helps us

live our Christian lives so that we are faithful to our baptism.

Sunday reflection by Mgr. Jeremy

John the Baptist said that the Mes-siah would “baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Fire in biblical times was associated with God and with his action in the world and in the lives of his people. God sometimes manifested his presence by use of fire, such as the burning bush which was not consumed when God spoke to Moses. The image of fire was also used to symbolize God's glory, his protective presence, his holiness, righteous judgment, and his wrath against sin. It is also used of the Holy Spirit. Jesus came to give us the fire of his Spirit that we may radiate the joy and truth of the gospel to a world in desperate need of God's light and truth. His word has power to change and transform our lives that we may be lights pointing others to Christ. Like John the Baptist, we too are called to give testimony to the light and truth of Jesus Christ. his Holy Spirit. John preached a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. But why did Jesus, the Sinless One, submit himself to John’s baptism? In this humble submission we see a foreshadowing of the “baptism” of his death upon the cross. Jesus’ baptism is the acceptance and the beginning of his mission as God’s suffering Servant. He allowed himself to be numbered among sinners. Jesus submitted himself entirely

to his Father’s will. Out of love he consented to this baptism of death for the remission of our sins. The Father then proclaimed his entire delight in his Son and spoke audibly for all to hear. The Holy Spirit, too, was present as he anointed Jesus for his ministry which began that day as he rose from the waters of the Jordan river. Jesus will be the source of the Spirit for all who come to believe in him. At his baptism the

heavens were opened and the waters were sanctified by the descent of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, signifying the beginning of a new creation. Do you want to see your life transformed? And do you want to become a more effective instrument of the gospel? Examine Jesus’ humility and ask the Holy Spirit to forge this same attitude in your heart. As you do, heaven will open for you as well. The Lord is ever ready

to renew and refashion us through his Spirit and to anoint us for mission as his ambassadors. We are called to be “light” and “salt” to those around us. The Lord wants his love and truth to shine through us that others may see the goodness and truth of God’s message of salvation. Let us ask the Lord Jesus to fill us with his Holy Spirit that we may radiate the joy of the Gospel to those around us.

A Way of Mercy in Westminster Cathedral A Way of Mercy for the YEAR OF MERCY has been arranged along the right-hand side of the Cathe-dral, as an opportunity for us to reflect on aspects of the mercy of God. The Holy Door itself is the first station: not the newly-installed glass doors in the large central porch, but the smaller door on the right as you face the Cathedral from the piazza. The beautiful lettering has already received much positive comment, and the five diamonds painted around the door repre-sent the five wounds of Christ. The second and third stations, the Seat of Mercy and the Divine Mercy respectively, are in the two

porches immediately beyond the door. The fourth station is the Baptistry: the artwork is on a striking scale here, and depicts the baptism of Christ. The fifth station, in the Chapel of St Gregory and St Augustine, is devoted to the mercy of God the Father: a painting of the parable of the Prodigal Son is set over the altar. In the Chapel of St Patrick we find the sixth station: God the Son – Mercy Incarnate. The seventh station, in St Andrew’s Chapel, focuses on the Holy Spirit, and the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy, which are depicted on the side wall. Given his own dramatic conversion, which is the subject of the artwork of the eighth station, it is appropriate that the Chapel of St Paul is the one where we are invited to think on the call to conversion. It may also be a suitable place to prepare to make a Confession: leaflets are available to offer assistance to those who may be a little unsure about what to say or do. The ninth station is the Lady Chapel: it would be an appropriate place to pray, for example, the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen) in honour of Our Lady, Mother of Mercy. A tenth and final station is in the porch opposite that leading from the Holy Door: a simple poster invites us to put into practice the things on which we have reflected, and ‘to be merciful as our heavenly Father is merciful.’ By passing through the Holy Door and fulfilling a number of other conditions, it is possible to gain the Jubilee Indul-gence. More information about this, and about the Way of Mercy itself, is available in the simple guide to the Way of Mercy available in the Cathedral. Do take a copy to help you walk the Way of Mercy, keeping in mind as you do the hope expressed by Pope Francis that we may ‘experience the joy of encountering that grace which transforms all things.’

Why not visit the Cathedral and follow the Way of Mercy??

Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Mt 3: 16-17 After the Lord was baptized, the heavens were opened, and the Spirit descended upon him like a dove, and the voice of the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Collect Almighty ever-living God, who, when Christ had been baptized in the River Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him, solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. First reading: Isaiah 40:1-5,9-11 ‘Console my people, console them’ says your God. ‘Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and call to her that her time of service is ended, that her sin is atoned for, that she has received from the hand of the Lord double punishment for all her crimes.’ A voice cries, ‘Prepare in the wilderness a way for the Lord. Make a straight highway for our God across the desert. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low. Let every cliff become a plain, and the ridges a valley; then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all mankind shall see it; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.’ Go up on a high mountain,

joyful messenger to Zion. Shout with a loud voice, joyful messenger to Jerusalem. Shout without fear, say to the towns of Judah, ‘Here is your God.’ Here is the Lord coming with power, his arm subduing all things to him. The prize of his victory is with him, his trophies all go before him. He is like a shepherd feeding his flock, gathering lambs in his arms, holding them against his breast and leading to their rest the mother ewes. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 103:1-4,24-25,27-30

R/. Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. 1. Lord God, how great you are, clothed in majesty and glory, wrapped in light as in a robe! You stretch out the heavens like a tent. R/. 2. Above the rains you build your dwelling. You make the clouds your chariot, you walk on the wings of the wind, you make the winds your messengers and flashing fire your servant. R/. 3. How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches. There is the sea, vast and wide, with its moving swarms past counting, living things great and small. R/. 4. All of these look to you to give them their food in due season. You give it, they gather it up: you open your hand, they have their fill. R/.

TODAY’S MASS 5. You hide your face, they are dismayed; you take back your spirit, they die. You send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the earth. R/. Second reading: Titus 2:11-14,3:4-7 God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race and taught us that what we have to do is to give up everything that does not lead to God, and all our worldly ambitions; we must be self-restrained and live good and religious lives here in this present world, while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the Appearing of the glory of our great God and saviour Christ Jesus. He sacrificed himself for us in order to set us free from all wickedness and to purify a people so that it could be his very own and would have no ambition except to do good. But when the kindness and love of God our saviour for mankind were revealed, it was not because he was concerned with any righteous actions we might have done ourselves; it was for no reason except his own compassion that he saved us, by means of the cleansing water of rebirth and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit which he has so generously poured over us through Jesus Christ our saviour. He did this so that we should be justified by his grace, to become heirs looking forward to inheriting eternal life. Gospel Acclamation: cf.Lk3:16 Alleluia, alleluia! Someone is coming, said John, someone greater than I. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Alleluia!

Gospel: Luke 3:15-16,21-22 A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to think that John might be the Christ, so John declared before them all, ‘I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Now when all the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptism was at prayer, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily shape, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.’ Prayer over the Offerings Accept, O Lord, the offerings we have brought to honour the revealing of your beloved Son, so that the oblation of your faithful may be transformed into the sacrifice of him who willed in his compassion to wash away the sins of the world. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Communion Antiphon: Jn 1: 32, 34 Behold the One of whom John said: I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God. Prayer after Communion Nourished with these sacred gifts, we humbly entreat your mercy, O Lord, that, faithfully listening to your Only Begotten Son, we may be your children in name and in truth. Through Christ our Lord.
