    Introduction

Composite materials (also called composition materials or shortened to

    composites.)

. Made from two or more constituent materials.

. With different physical or chemical properties.

    . Different in forms.

    . Insoluble in each other.

. The individual component remain separate and distinct with in the

    finished structure.

Difference between alloy and composite material.

    Alloy. homogeneous mixture. microscopic level

    Composite. heterogeneous mixture. macroscopic level

    COMPOSITES FOR ARMOUR

    . What is Armour?

. Role of Armour is to protect a person, structure or device

. Absorbing kinetic energy of the projectile.

. Armour plate may have to fulfill two roles: a protective role

    and structural role.

. Composites are soft and are not effective against hardprojectiles.

. However, when coupled with ceramics as laminates, they

    provide effective solution.

. Composites also provide best protection against HESHammunition

    Why use Composites in armour?

    In Automobile

body panels, bumpers, leaf springs, gears, bearings,LPG storage

    cylinders, vehicle tyres, etc.

Effect on reduction in the weight (by using composite) on the fuel efficiency of

    the vehicle

    Composites in the Aircraft Industry

Composite materials are widely used in the Aircraft Industry .

The development of light-weight, high-temperature resistant

composite materials will allow the next generation of high-

performance, economical aircraft designs to materialize.

Usage of such materials will reduce fuel consumption, improve

efficiency and reduce direct operating costs of aircrafts.

    Boats

hulls, decks, masts, engine shrouds, interior panels, etc.

    Chemical

pipes, tanks, pressure vessels, valves, pumps, impellers, etc.Domestic

chairs, tables, baths, shower units, ladders, etc.

    Electrical

switchgear, insulators, connectors, fibre optics cables, etc.Medical

artificial joints, skull repairs, teeth repairs, etc.

    15/17

    Composite Advantages:-

. Excellent mechanical, chemical, structural, electrical, optical and other

    desired properties.

. They are light weight materials

. Composites can be molded to any shape and size and

according to any desired specification.. Assembling and dissembling of components is easy.

    16/17

    Disadvantages:-

. High cost of raw materials.. High manufacturing cost.

    . Reuse may be difficult.

    . Difficult to attach.
