He watched his older sisters practice the game using the basket their dad had installed over the garage and joined in. He fell in love with the game and it’s been a lifelong affair. While playing point guard at Princeton, David was recruited by a coach from an Israeli kibbutz team, and he played in Israel that summer at Kibbutz Gan Shmuel. The following year, a Maccabi USA volunteer approached him about trying out for the USA Maccabiah team. David was excited to try out for the team, which he made, and his Maccabiah experience changed his life. The 1981 Maccabiah USA Open Men’s Basketball Team won the gold medal, but the athletes had such meaningful experiences that it influenced many major life decisions. After the Games, David made Aliyah to Israel and continued to play professional Basketball for Israel’s Super League. He continued to play professionally until 1993, when he transitioned to what continues to be a stellar coaching career. “Playing for your country in the Maccabiah Games is a totally different experience than playing in college or professionally,” David said. “It’s about more than just the competition; it is about immersing yourself in Jewish culture and gives you a sense of community and togetherness. It’s an experience that stays with you always and is one of the main reasons I made Aliyah and have lived in Israel the last 33 years.” In 1991, David married Kineret and together they are raising four children, Tamir, Shani, Ela and Adi. His son Tamir competed for Israel at the 2013 Maccabiah Games as a member of the Juniors Boys’ Basketball team. His son’s involvement was just one reason that David found the 2013 Maccabiah Games to be very significant, for himself and for Israel. “I was an integral part of the Opening Ceremony, which was a great honor, and watching my son compete – doing something I had done over thirty years earlier – was enormously moving and a great source of pride and happiness,” David said. “Just as importantly, last year’s Maccabiah Games really renewed interest with, and a connection to, the people of Israel, more so than in years past.
