Dear Staff, Students, Parents and Well-wishers,
It gives me a great pleasure to write a few lines for another edition of Cardinal Gracias High School Magazine “Graciana”. I am particularly delighted to note that our school is taking enormous efforts in the fields of education and physical fitness. I sincerely congratulate and appreciate our Principal Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas, O.Praem, all teachers, non-teaching staff and students.
The second Vatican Council's Gravissimum Education (Declaration on Christian Education) insists that 'a true education aims at the formation of the human person in the pursuit of his ultimate end and of the good of the societies of which he as man is a member and in whose obligation as an adult he will share'.
The PTA and Management are involved in the progress of our students. They give special attention towards education and all other activities in the school. In this modern and challenging world we need to have a basic and strong foundation in education.
Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, Our Former President of India, has a relevant message for us: 'Work with integrity and succeed with integrity, have a dream resulting into a goal for personal growth and growth of the nation and acquire as much knowledge as possible for realization of the growth through the association of good books, good teachers and good human beings'.
I take this opportunity to thank the entire Gracian family for your great support and cooperation. I also congratulate all the silver jubilarians and retiring teachers for their commitment and dedicated service to our institute for the last several years. I bless all the students for their better future. May almighty God bless each one of us and keep us growing in his love through a better education.

Dear Readers,
'Discipline - the way to excellence' is the scholastic theme of the Gracianites for the academic year 2014-15. The editorial team has made an earnest endeavour to focus on the theme in this issue of Graciana. As you turn the pages of this issue you will realize the colossal prominence given to the value of discipline, the essence of a learner's life.
This edition of Graciana is dedicated to our patron, His Eminence Valerian Cardinal Gracias, the first Indian elevated to the rank of Cardinal in the Catholic Church hierarchy. Cardinal Valerian Gracias hosted the 38th International Eucharistic Congress in Mumbai, 1964. The golden jubilee of the same was celebrated in 2014 by all the Catholic Churches in Mumbai.
The bulletin also captures all the events, laurels and reminiscences associated with the academic year 2014-15. It treasures the impressions of the Gracianites. The synopsis of speeches, essays and elocutions too contribute to the quintessence of the journal.
Poetry, art and craft are integral for aesthetic development of an individual. These talents of our students are highlighted. Sports triggers energy, ethics and compassion among the athletes. The achievements of our sports teams are acknowledged and appreciated.
“A flower makes no garland.” This glossy magazine is an outcome of the sincere efforts of the editorial teams of the three sections of Cardinal Gracias High School under the motivation and supervision of our Principal, Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas and our Manager, Rev. Fr. Anthony Fernandes.

Dear Gracianites,
The present issue of Graciana is dedicated to our Patron His Eminence Valerian Cardinal Gracias, India's first Cardinal, Padma Vibhushan Award winner of 1966, a charismatic personality and a great source of inspiration to one and all.
The academic year began with a happy feeling of Cent percent result of the SSC 2014. The Gracian Family celebrates the achievement and I Congratulate all the Students and the teachers at this great achievement. There are 302 students appearing for SSC March 2015, hoping for a cent percent result this year too. All the efforts are being made in this direction. I extend my sincere prayers and best wishes to all the SSC –students for a great result.
The scholastic theme for the academic year was “Discipline the Way to Excellence” A lot of efforts were made to strengthen discipline. Like a pencil we all experience a painful sharpening from time to time, to sketch beautiful pictures of life. Environment plays a big role in moulding the personality of a student. We shall not discipline a child rather create an atmosphere at home, society and in the school for discipline. The parents and teachers need to be role models, whether it is punctuality, grooming or etiquette all come from a good environment. Our Administration, society, parents and teachers together create a conducive environment for a child to grow into self-disciplined adult.
After a short period of struggle, new E-learning system with Epson Interactive Projectors and Teach Next Content is installed in all the class rooms to make teaching learning more interesting and up to date. Thanks to the PTA of both sections and the parents for your co-operation. As the saying goes, “If we teach today's children as we taught yesterday's, we rob them of tomorrow”.
Besides academics we promote art and craft, music, dance, sports, cultural and humanitarian activities. This year too students participated in a variety of inter- house and inter school competitions, H ward competitions and demonstrated their talents. Congrats to the students for bringing laurels to the school.
The Gracian family congratulates the Jubilarians Ms. Greta Pharel and Mr. Rambharat Yadav, both of them completed 25 years of their great service to the school. Continue to be beacons of light. Sincere thanks to the retired pre-primary teacher Ms. Annette Pereira for your dedicated 22 years of service to the institution. Wish you a blessed and peaceful retired life.

The patron of Cardinal Gracias High School, His Eminence Valerian Cardinal Gracias (1950 - 87) was the First Indian Archbishop of Bombay (1950) and India's first Cardinal (1953). He guided the Christian community in India for over two decades and is rightly honoured with the title 'The Churchman of the 20th Century in India'. In 1966, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, a title in recognition of his services to the nation and his concern for humanity. He has been described universally as 'The Greatest Ambassador of Good Will' India has ever sent abroad.
In the Roman Catholic Church, a Eucharistic Congress is a gathering of clergy, religious and laity to bear witness to the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, which is an important Roman Catholic doctrine. Congresses bring together people from a wide area, and typically involve large open-air Masses, adoration of the Eucharist (Blessed Sacrament), and other devotional ceremonies held over several days. Eucharistic Congresses are organised both at national and international levels.
Cardinal Gracias hosted the first all India Eucharistic Congress in Mumbai from December 4- 8, 1954. He was appointed the representative of the Pope for the significant event. The successful organization of the Indian Eucharistic Congress brought Cardinal Gracias into limelight at the international level.
The Vatican later entrusted him with the responsibility of hosting the 38th international Eucharistic Congress in India in 1964. Most importantly, Pope Paul VI had conceded to visit India to officiate at the World Eucharistic Congress. The 38th international Eucharistic Congress was held in Mumbai from November 28 to December 6, 1964.
The year 2014 marks the glorious golden jubilee of the 38th International Eucharistic Congress. On October 28, Oswald Cardinal Gracias, the Archbishop of Bombay, held a special mass to celebrate 50 years of the arrival of Pope Paul VI on December 1, 1964. The jubilee celebration commenced on 4th November with Eucharistic adorations, processions and rallies in churches across Mumbai.
The celebration concluded on 7th December with an exhibition of relics from 16th century and papal objects from 1964.The artifacts given by the pope during his visit were on display, along with other relics - tabernacles from the 17th century, the pope's mitre, papal cops, stamps, seals, rings, chalices and a gold monstrance.
His Holiness Pope Paul VI had presented the embroidered Mitre used at the Congress, as a token of love and affection to His Eminence Valerian Cardinal Gracias.
We are indeed proud and providential to have His Eminence Valerian Cardinal Gracias as the patron of our school, Cardinal Gracias High School.

JuneThe Pre-Primary staff meeting for the academic year 2014-15 was held on 14th June, 2014. Our Principal, Fr. Prem Arockia and our Co-ordinator, Fr. Joseph Parachalil were present at the meeting. All teachers were welcomed to the new academic year.
JulyOur Co-ordinator Fr. Joseph celebrated his birthday on 13th July. Our staff presented him with a bouquet of flowers and a birthday card.
AugustChildren coloured the National Flag as a class activity and the teachers e x p l a i n e d t h e significance of it to them.
SeptemberTeacher's Day was celebrated with fun filled games and a sumptuous lunch. Each one was given a lovely gift.
OctoberPre-Primary Examination was held from 1st October to 18th October, 2014.Diwali Vacation was from 20th October to 6th November, 2014.
NovemberOn 14th November, 2014 Children's Day was celebrated.
There was a dance and puppet show performed by the teachers. Children were given chocolates.On 29th November, 2014 Drawing Competition was held for Nursery, Jr. K.G. and Sr. K.G.
DecemberChristmas Party was on 20th December, 2014. The children were given gifts and packets of sweets.Christmas Party for teachers was on 22nd December, 2014. Teachers were given snacks and gifts.
JanuaryOn 20th January, 2015 we celebrated Principal's Day. We gave Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas a lovely gift, a bouquet of flowers and a card.On 24th January, prior to the commencement of the Fancy Dress Competition our Manager Rev. Fr. Anthony Fernandes, Principal Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas and Pre-Primary Principal Rev. Fr. Prem Arockia felicitated our retiring teacher Mrs. Annette Pereira with a shawl and a bouquet of flowers.
FebruaryThe entire Gracian family went for a picnic to Sea Lord Resort, Virar (W) on 11th February, 2014 and all had an enjoyable time there.

Mrs. Annette Pereira, whom we fondly know as Joan, started teaching in this school in the year 1977. She held the post of the supervisor of the Jr. K.G. for the past 12 years. She is a very soft spoken and humble person. She is a very gentle and patient teacher with all her students she had in her care for the past 37 years. She is also very cool and calm in all situations. She has a good rapport with everyone.
We thank you Ms. Annette for your dedicated service to our institution and pray that God may grant you a happy, fruitful and well deserved retired life. We, as Gracianites, will definitely miss your presence and especially your simple and humble nature.

The flag was unfurled by the Chief Guest, Mr. Kamlesh Desai, road c a p t a i n o f H a r l e y Davidson. Patriotic songs were sung. A Bikers Show was organized by Harley Davidson.
10th September, 2014Navneet Drawing Competition was held on 5th September, 2014.On 10th September, 2014 the students put up a variety of entertaining programme in the school auditorium to felicitate their teachers.
18th October, 2014We had Diwali Celebration on this day and children came dressed in party clothes. A prayer service was conducted. Children brought Diwali sweets and shared them with their friends.
14th November, 2014Children's Day was celebrated on 14th November, 2014. Students came dressed in party clothes. A prayer service was conducted for the children. Teachers performed various entertaining programme in the school auditorium to express their love towards the students. The students were given chocolates.
13th December, 2014The Primary Section celebrated the Annual
13th June, 2014An orientation programme was organized for the teachers. Rev. Fr. Maggi Murzello, Principal of St. Andrew's High School, Bandra West, enriched the teachers with his motivating talk and boosted the teachers to start the academic year with enthusiasm. 16th June, 2014School re-opened for the academic year 2014-2015 on 16th June, 2014 with a s p e c i a l p r a y e r service, “welcome back to school” by our Principal Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas and our Head Teacher Ms. Sarita Mehta. Both teachers and students were all very enthusiastic and full of energy to begin the new academic year.
19th June, 2014We celebrated the birthday of our Head Teacher Ms. Sarita Mehta on 19th June, 2014. The children put up a variety of entertaining programme in the school auditorium.
9th August, 2014The first P.T.A. General Body Meeting was held on 9th August, 2014. The elected members from each class attended the meeting. The points discussed were on discipline, academics, manners, etiquette, the overall development of the child and settling the educomp issue.
15th August, 2014We celebrated the 68th Independence Day with pride and joy on 15th August, 2014.

Day Cum Prize Distribution Day on 13th December, 2014 in the school auditorium. The Chief Guest for that evening was Mr. Gabriel Zuzarte, CEO of Road Rage Custom Builds. Various Folk Dances were performed by the students of each standard. The chief guest then gave away the certificates, prizes and scholarship awards to the 'Rank Holders' of the year 2013-2014. The vote of thanks was proposed by the staff secretary Ms. Hilda Pereira. The whole programme was a co-ordinate effort of the Gracian staff and students under the guidance of our Principal Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas and our Head Teacher Ms. Sarita Mehta. The programme ended with the National Anthem.
19th December, 2014The Annual Sports Meet was held on 19th December, 2014. The Chief Guest was none other than our beloved Head Teacher Ms. Sarita Mehta. The Sports Day began with the March-Past. Students held the slogans and marched to the beats of the school band. The winners of the sports events were given medals and certificates.
20th December, 2014Christmas celebration was held on 20th December, 2014. Students came dressed in party clothes. Teachers conducted some entertaining events in the class. Students were given pieces of cake.
20th January, 2015Principal's Day was celebrated on 20th January, 2015 with great excitement and enthusiasm. The staff of all the three section assembled in the school auditorium to felicitate our beloved Principal Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas. The students put up an entertaining programme to express their gratitude and reverence.
29th January, 2015The Annual School Picnic for the students of Std. I to IV was to The Great Escape on 29th January, 2015. The students played to their hearts content. Sumptuous lunch was ser ved. S tudents enjoyed their picnic to the fullest and then came back to school.
7th February, 2015P.T.A. General Body Meeting was held on 7th February, 2015. The main agenda of the meeting was the revision of the school fees for the forth coming year.
11th February, 2015All the three sections - Pre-Primary, Primary and Secondary went to Sea Lord Resort at Arnala, Virar. It was a day of enjoyment. All the teachers had a great time and returned with sweet memories of the picnic.

The twentieth century will be remembered for many scientific achievements: the discovery of DNA, the invention of antibiotics, man landing on the moon; but none of this would have been possible was it not for one vital and relatively unknown technique: Crystallography.
The United Nations has declared 2014 the International Year of Crystallography. This year marks 100 years since crystallography leaped onto the scene. Crystallography was invented by William Henry and William Lawrence Bragg, at the University of Leeds and the University of Cambridge. The father and son team were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1915 for their discovery.
Crystallography experiments have recently yielded a potential vaccine for foot-and-mouth diseases and have helped scientists to study T-Cells: a natural defense mechanism in the body which could provide an effective treatment against cancer.
In the future, if we arrive at cure for HIV and cancer, or if we develop ways of living on Mars, or creating a world free from fossil fuels, Crystallography will undoubtedly have a role to play.

Just take a look at the environment today. You will see concrete jungles everywhere, tall skyscrapers hiding the natural scenery. Roads and parks are littered. Plastics have become the order of the day. Vehicles and industries have made the air impure.
For a better environment we have to think of environmental cleanliness. Clean environ-ment is necessary for healthy life. We can keep our school clean by not throwing papers and wrappers in the school premises. So also, we can avoid use of plastics.
Use public transport instead of private vehicles. Avoid polluting water by throwing waste in a river, well or sea. Do not throw garbage on the roadside. Use eco-friendly technology to reduce pollution.
Remember the three' R' mantra - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to eliminate waste. Very important is to plant trees in our locality.
Remember we are a part of nature, not apart from nature.

Since the beginning of time man has been inventing things; the recent invention to have taken the world by storm is the mobile phone. Originally a large, heavy, black box with even an larger protruding aerial, mobile phones were not widely used whereas today they are a must have fashion accessory.
First of all, mobile phone is easy to use, communicate and handy. You can call anywhere, local or international. However, it can entertain you as well to reduce your tiredness and stress. You can check internet, listen to music, text, play game and so on. Other benefits are, easy to send or check emails, make a note, reminder, alarm, etc.
In spite of its advantages, there're also some disadvantages of mobile phone too. New
research indicates that using a mobile while driving greatly increases the risk of having an accident whether the phone is hand held or hands-free. The study also confirms that the danger remains in the minute after phone call has finished. This is because of the microwaves that it emits. Mobile radiation can cause brain tumours and scrambles our mind. With 46,000 thousands new users every day last year, the cancer fears have not proven enough to stop people texting, voice mailing, etc. The youth today get addicted to phone.
In conclusion, everything has its own advantages and disadvantages, also mobile phones. So you need to use it carefully.

India is a country of rich culture, tradition and heritage. During the period of colonization, India was considered as an underdeveloped and backward nation. But today, after independence, many nations look up to India as a developing nation and a nation of high global status.
Today India is a member of all important international organizations - The UNO, World Bank, IMF, UNESCO, UNICEF, WTO, ILO, WHO, etc. After Economic Liberalization in 1991, India has become a major contributor of aid to the third world countries.
India has the world's third largest standing army- a strong navy and air force that not only protects our country but also engages in UN's peace-keeping process. India is now a nuclear-armed nation.
India has the third largest scientific and technical manpower in the world. India is the only third-world country to develop its own remote-sensing satellite. The Mars Orbit Mission (MOM) or Mangalyaan launched into the Earth's orbit on 5th November 2013 by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation ) is expected to enter the orbit around Mars on 24th September,2014.If this mission succeeds, India would be the fourth country to reach Mars. India is known as a target for outsourcing in the IT sector.
Thus, India has a truly high status all over the globe. In a short span of time, India will surely be called as a 'Developed Nation'. We are genuinely and extremely fortunate to be born and brought up as the citizens of a nation like India.

“ACCQUIRED IMMUNE DEFICIENCY SYNDROME” popularly known by its abbreviation AIDS is a fatal disease as it attacks and destroys the immune system of the body. It is caused by a virus called “HUMAN IMMUNO DEFICIENCY VIRUS” or HIV in short.
HIV infection is not contagious. The infection mainly spreads through a sexual route or blood to blood contact. HIV spreads mainly through sexual relationship with an infected partner, transfusion of HIV infected blood and products, use of infected syringes or needles and is passed on by an infected mother to her unborn child. It is therefore foolish to believe that HIV spreads through mosquitoes, embracing, holding, touching or kissing each other, shaking hands, coughing, sneezing, spitting, sharing of public toilets or swimming pools, sharing meals or eating from the same plate, or
sharing clothes, bedsheets or attending the similar schools or working together.
AIDS is in reality caused by a slow and a gradual process. The initial HIV infection may show general symptoms like fever, body ache or headache and then lie dormant for years together without showing any further signs. Next, a person may develop enlarged glands in the neck or armpits without any pain or other symptoms. Other symptoms can be fatigue, weight-loss, chronic diarrhea, prolonged fever, cough, night sweats etc.
Gradually, the virus damages the immune system. The last stage of the disease takes at least ten years to culminate into a fully blown AIDS. By this time, patient's immune system is totally destroyed and the person gets infected by various diseases and cancers. This stage is easily recognized and

St. Sebastian, the patron saint of our dear Principal, Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas, is the patron of the diseased, soldiers, and athletes as well. 20th January, the feast of St. Sebastian, is celebrated as Principal's day every year by the Gracianites.
Since June 2011, Fr. Sabu has left no stone unturned in order to equip the students, teachers and parents with modern technology in the field of education. The installation of the E-Learning System, the initiation of the School Website, the introduction of School Android App and the School Facebook Page reveals his sincere endeavour in making our school hi-tech in all aspects.
Fr. Sabu is very ambitious and stern in accomplishing his vision. He has been successful in inspiring, motivating and guiding the S.S.C students to achieve cent percent results in the S.S.C Board Examinations 2014. It is his determination to
maintain the same trend in the years to follow.
'Cleanliness is next to Godliness' is the maxim that Fr. Sabu values. He enforced Bal Swachhata Abhiyaan in our school. Joining hands with the BIRD (Bandra Inter-school Republic Day) Committee, Fr.Sabu encour-aged the teachers and students to celebrate the Republic Day uniquely by flaging the by-passers with National Flag stickers.

After spending thirteen long years in this esteemed institution, it is very difficult for me to say 'GOOD BYE' to Cardinal Gracias High School, our beloved home. CGHS has nurtured me and instiled in me good values. Indeed, it is impractical to get back the golden school days but the intelligence and values we have received from the school will remain with us, lifetime!
I affectionately and sincerely thank our principal Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas for giving me this opportunity to be the head boy for the academic year 2014-15. It was my family members and teachers who encouraged me and guided me to take this responsibility. As a Head boy of this school, I was fortunate to gain more experience to
shoulder responsibility. It helped me to become expeditious.

Let me begin by first thanking all my teachers and mentors who have created an atmosphere of not just learning but more importantly of growing for me throughout these 13 years. In all my years in this school I can honestly say that being made the head girl was my proudest moment. I have tried my utmost to live up to the duties bestowed upon me and while I may have faltered, I feel I have learnt a lot from my experience. Honestly speaking saying good bye to this institute is not less than a nightmare for me. When I joined this school 13 years back, I was filled with lots of doubts. It was my teachers who inspired, encouraged and supported me a lot. My teachers played an important role in building my personality.
I have a lot of interest in sports. Being the sports captain was very essential for me because I wanted our school to shine in the field of sports. I also tried my best to give my 100 percent to my studies. Again it was my teachers who helped me in grasping the modules. But I must also say that one more driving force here were my parents.
I would like to thank our Principal Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas, our Vice Principal Ms. Kusum Pramod, and our Supervisors Ms. Mallika Usmani and Ms. Girija Kumar for always lending the student council members a

Studies have shown that EQ makes life happier than IQ. We need people with emotional intelligence rather than intellectual intelligence. 'You can make a living by what you get, but you make a life by
what you give.' Students should learn the joy of giving. Parents and teachers play a major role in moulding the students.
Schools can focus on creating a positive vibe in the atmosphere that will have an all round influence on the character of the child.
