Planning, Scheduling, Monitoring and Tracking of

Construction Project

GOVT. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, AURANGABAD

Introduction

1 May 2013 2

• To study and use primavera P3 for planning,

scheduling, monitoring and tracking of

construction project.

• Planning and scheduling aims at timely

execution of work.

• Monitoring and tracking is important to find

the deviation from the planned schedule.

Construction Project Management

1 May 2013 3

• Construction project is a high value time

bound with predetermined performance

objectives.

• Human and non human resources

(completion).

Function of Project Management

1 May 2013 4

• Planning : course of action to guide Project

completion

• Organizing : arrangement of resources

• Staffing : selection of expertise

• Directing : guiding of work

• Controlling : creation of system to measure

report and forecast deviation.

Time Planning Process

1 May 2013 5

• Project Work Breakdown : breaking down into

sub project

• Modeling & Analyzing Network : developing a

logic diagram

• Scheduling Work Programs : putting time plan

on calendar basis

Objective of Project

1 May 2013 7

• To prepare CPM (critical path method), Chart

for a building being built.

• To acquire good Knowledge of primavera P3

software which is globally used.

Desired results of Planning and

scheduling

1 May 2013 8

• To have un-interrupted flow of work

• To reduce amount of re-work

• To minimize confusion and misunderstanding

• To get the understanding of amount of work done

by each labour

• To integrate all work and ensure a quality project.

Factors affecting work Scheduling

1 May 2013 9

• Time

• Manpower

• Materials

• Machinery

• Capital

Introduction to Primavera Project

Planner

1 May 2013 11

• It is product of Primavera systems Inc., USA.

• It is a multi-user product that operate on LAN Local Area

Network.

• Can manage up to one lakh activities.

• It help to build project network quickly and graphically.

• We can impose up to ten restrictions.

Primavera File Structure

1 May 2013 12

• The project has mandatory four characters for

project name.

• All files will have P3 extension.

• All files are preferred with four characters file name.

• It works with one file type only. i.e. P3

Project Overview

1 May 2013 13

• A Building of configuration G+1 of an approximate area of 1100 Sq ft is

considered in this project.

• The building is being built for residential purposes in Shahnoorwadi.

• The actual work is started in December 2012.

• The software tool Primavera Project Planner is used for planning,

scheduling and controlling.

• The activities required to complete the building structure (excluding the

interiors) was identified and was fed as an input to Primavera along with

their durations.

• The critical activities and the project time which is represented by the

summation of critical path durations are obtained from the primavera

schedule.

STEPS FOR PLANNING & SCHEDULING

i. Creating A Project

• Open a new project name & is given as ABCD.

• The client name & location is selected.

• The planning unit is selected in days.

• The project start date is entered.

ii. Defining Calendars

• Before the activity list is entered , the calendar are defined.

• Calendars are used to model the working time for each activity.

Identification Of Project Activities• The activities required to complete the project is identified and

the activity list is entered

Sequencing the Activities• Finish to start relationship : Start of successor activity depends on

the completion of predecessor.

• Start to Start relationship : start of successor activity depends on

start of predecessor activity.

• Finish to Finish relationship : finish of successor activity depends

on finish of its predecessor activity.

• Start to Finish relationship : successor activity can’t complete until

its predecessor activity start.

• CPM of the building G+1 is obtained using the planning and scheduling

software using primavera project planner P3.

• The activity required to complete the structure are identified and put

in to primavera project planner.

• The scheduled network was then analyzed & schedule report was

generated using Primavera.

• Obtaining optimum network diagram & minimizing the time and cost

is the major objective.

• It has helped us to understand fundamental principles & techniques of

construction project management.

• An important part of project was acquisition of knowledge about

Primavera Project Planner.
