Communication is a message understood or sharing of experience.
It is used as an empowerment tool for developing
society.
Mass media plays an important role in communication.
Media refers to print media and electronic media.
It is a source of information for individuals as well as
society.

Print media is one of the oldest and basic forms of mass
communication.
It includes
Newspapers
Weeklies
Magazines
Monthlies.
other form of printed journals.
Newspaper
Print media generally refers to newspapers.
Newspapers collect and edit and print news reports and articles.

History In ancient Rome, Acta diurna or Govt. Announcements
published regularly. They are in metal or stone. Earliest form
of newspaper.
600 A.D – Chinese invent the art of printing
618 A.D – The Peking gazette in china was the first newspaper
which was hand-written and distributed to readers.
1439 – Johannes Gutenburg of Germany develop printing
tech.
Bengal was the Birth place of Journalism in India.
1780 – Bengal gazette – weekly two sheet paper.
1818 – Samachar darpan – weekly newspaper.
First periodicals was Dig darshan .
Raja Rammohan Roy – founder of revolutionary Indian press.
Later newspapers, were used for spreading patriotism in India.
Types of Newspapers
There are three types of Newspapers. They are
Broadsheets
Tabloids
Berliners or midis
Broadsheets: They are big in size
All morning newspapers are generally broadsheets.
Ex: “The Times of India” , “The Hindu”
Tabloids: They are only half the size of Newspapers.
Most evening newspapers are tabloids.
Ex: Metro now.
Berliners or Midis: These are very small newspapers.
Magazines:Magazines are not newspapers. These are published at
regular intervals.
Ex: Weekly,fortnightly,biweekly,trimonthly,annuals.
Newspapers in IndiaIndian print media is the largest print media and
newspaper market in world over 100 million copies sold each day and over 230 year old.
In 1947 , Total – 3533 In 1997 , It increased 12 timesIn 2006 , total 62550 Newspapers – 2130 Weeklies - 3428

Media provide news and information required by the people.
Media can educate the public.
Media helps a democracy function effectively. They inform the
public about government policies and programmes and how these
programmes can be useful to them.
Media can entertain people.
Media can act as an agent of change in development.
Media has brought people of the world closer to each other.
Media promote trade and industry through advertisements Media can help the political and democratic processes of a
country. Media can bring in positive social changes.
Negative impacts:The traditional culture of a country is adversely affected by mass media.Entertainment has become the main component of mass media. This affects the primary objectives of media to inform and educate the people.
Media promote violence. Studies have proved that violence shown on television and cinema have negative effects on children. Mass media promote the desire in people to buy and own products that are advertised through the media but which may not be essential for them.
Advantages of print media : In print media readers have the choice to go back and
recheck. What they have read. Gives scope for in depth analysis. Language is more literary and flowery and reader –friendly.
Disadvantages of print media: Literacy is a basic requirement for the print media. Only a
literate person can read it. Print media works according to a deadline. Print media does not provide scope for a live discussion. Frequent update of news is not possible.
Thus Print media is a powerful tool and it is one of the mass media. The use of this depend on the mindset of the readers.
