In PCP systems, a rotating screw-type pump is used and the rotating movement is thentransmitted from the surface to the pumpthrough a sucker rod string working mainlyunder torque stresses, causing the fluidcontained in the cavity to flow upwards.
Tenaris’s Research & Development teamdeveloped the HolloRodTM Series hollow suckerrods, a technological breakthrough that notonly increases the reliability of progressivecavity pumping (PCP) operations, but alsoreduces operating costs.
One of the alternatives that the hollow rodpresents is the ability to inject fluids throughthe hollow rod for heavy and extra-heavy crudeoil pumping or any other special application. This improves injection efficiency and reducesthe complexity of the operation given theelimination of injection pipes and capillaries.

Main features
The seamless pipes used to manufacture theHolloRodTM Series products combine a low-alloyChromium-Molibdenum steel with a quenched andtempered heat treatment resulting in a refinedmicroestructure with excellent mechanicalproperties: Yielding Streess 140 Ksi minimum andUltimate tensile stress 147 Ksi minimum.
These rods have been developed to work underrotating loads in PCP. This product includes apipe with box-box ends and a nipple connectorthat allows an external flush joint (with novariation of the diameter in the joint area),which minimizes turbulence and flow losses.
The flush connection significantly reducesfriction between the tubing and the rod string. Therefore, premature wear failures areeliminated.
The range of products with HolloRodTM
includes three models of connections to workwith torques up to 1,000; 1,500 and 2,500 lb.ft.
OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
• HolloRodTM tapered thread with 8 hpptrapezoidal thread profile and differentiatedtapering between pin and box.
• Joint with torque shoulder. • Diluents, corrosion inhibitors or other fluids
can be added through a hollow joint. • Temperature and pressure sensors can be
lowered down the string.
HANDLING AND INSTALLATION
For handling and transportation of HolloRodTM
Series, the same specifications for conventionalsucker rods must be followed. Installation thewell site is simple, as no special accessories areneeded.
Elevators
Conventional sucker rods elevators are usedwith a 1” x 2 feet pony rod and a crossover toadjust the HolloRodTM Series end when elevating.
Power Tong
The use of standard hydraulic pipe tongs withadapted clamps for an outer diameter of 1.66” or 1.9” is recommended. No special tools arerequired. For better performance, an electronictorque control device is suggested.
Hanging Slips
Pneumatic slips are used for conventional pipesadapted to outer diameters of 1.66” or 1.9”.

Well configurations withHolloRodTM SeriesA trustworthy technology that offers versatility to our customers'operations.
OIL PRODUCTION THROUGH THE TUBING /
HOLLOW ROD ANNULUS
HolloRodTM Series rods make operations morereliable and safer. Thanks to their unique design, rods can withstand higher torque loads. Beingmore rigid than conventional products, hollowrods accumulate less energy in the string andsignificantly reduce probability of backspineffects, enhancing safety at the rig.
OIL PRODUCTION THROUGH BOTH THE TUBING /
HOLLOW ROD ANNULUS AND THE ROD STRING INTERIOR
This configuration increases production flowarea. It is mainly recommended with HolloRodTM 1000 and HolloRodTM 1500 rodsinstalled in 2 7/8” (73 mm) tubing, and shouldnot be used for viscous oil pumping.

OIL PRODUCTION THROUGH THE TUBING / HOLLOW
ROD ANNULUS AND INJECTION OF FLUIDS THROUGH
THE ROD STRING INTERIOR
One of the alternatives that HolloRodTM
technology enables is the injection of fluids into the rod string. This improves injectionefficiency, since fluids come into direct contactwith the flowing oil – making injection pipesand capillaries unnecessary.
FLUID INJECTION IN BATCHES THROUGH THE
HOLLOW ROD
This is a modification of the previous optionthat allows the injection of fluids through thehollow rod string in batches. When the injectionprogram is not being used, produced oil can belifted through both the hollow rod string and theannular space between the tubing and the rodstring, increasing flow area.

• Dramatically reduces the number of workoveroperations caused by sucker rod connection failures.
• Expands the traditional working capacity of the rod pumping system to operations that are normally restricted to ESPs.
• Improves performance in high load operations.• Reduces the stress level, together with the energy
consumption, in the pump jack by using a lighter rodstring composed of smaller sucker rods.
• Flank-to-flank contact that eliminates the gap existing in the conventional profile thread, thus reducing thetendency to loosen.
• Cut-tapered trapezium profile thread with diametricalinterference that reduces the pre-tension in the pinmake-up.
• Lower displacement during make-up and uniform contactbetween the flanks, allowing a better stress distributionand a reduction in the permanent deformations createdin threads during both make-up and operation.

LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory tests were performed to evaluate and compare the maximum resistance ofBlueRodTM and API connections. To this end, it was necessary to increase the rod bodydiameters of the samples and to isolate theeffects on them.
The connections’ stress level was evaluatedfollowing the Modified Goodman Diagrammethod, as recommended by API Specs. Results showed that:• Grade D BlueRodTM reached infinite fatigue
life (10 million cycles) working up to 336% onthe Goodman Diagram.
• The conventional connection could notsurpass half these cycles at lower stress levels.
OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE VERIFIED ON SITE
When the sucker rod string reaches 10 millioncycles, it is considered to have infinite fatiguelife. This number of cycles has been reached inan operating well in which high-strengthsucker rods were replaced by 7/8” Grade DBlueRodTM.
The chart shows 7/8” Grade D BlueRodTM
working under similar stress conditions tothose of 1” high-strength rods with conventionalconnections. In this scenario, the new TenarisBlueRodTM has enabled a higher Grade Defficiency to be achieved in the field.
Increased rod stringworking capacityThe BlueRodTM premium sucker rods improve the rod’s fatigue life andprovide an excellent performance in the field, maximizing the resultsof rod pumping system applications.
