Public School Academic and Attendance Calendaring Highlights Source: 2016–2017: Student Attendance Accounting Handbook 3.8 Calendar A school day must be at least 420 minutes each day including intermission and recesses (420 minutes equate to the old 1 day rule) Provide at least 75,600 minutes of instruction (equates to 180 days) Includes intermissions and recesses for students Minus any minutes waived by the TEA in writing up to 4200 minutes (equates 10 days) Or your district has been approved to provide fewer school minutes to certain students through a program such as the Optional Flexible Year Program (TEC, §25.081) Under no circumstances may it offer fewer than 71,400 school minutes (equates to 170 days) Flexibility with: Start and end date and number of days per semester 6-wk reporting periods but must be approximately six equal periods Teacher preparation days 3.8.1 Length of School Day A school day must be at least 420 minutes each day, including intermissions and recesses. The selected time may vary from campus to campus within your district.
