Overview of the IB Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) was established in Geneva in 1968 to provide an international, and internationally recognized, university-entrance qualification for students studying outside of their home country. The IB’s goal is to provide students with the values and opportunities that will enable them to develop sound judgment make wise choices, and respect others in the global community. The IB Programme equips students with the skills and attitudes necessary for success in higher education and employment; it has the strengths of a traditional liberal arts curriculum, but with three important additional features, shown at the center of the curriculum model shown on the previous page. Today the IB DP has expanded so that more than half the students opting for it come from state or national systems rather than from international schools. As the IB DP has grown, so too has its reputation for excellence; the IB DP is now recognized in almost every country in the world as a one of the pre-eminent pre-university qualifications.

University Recognition

The Diploma Program is a leading, internationally recognized pre-university qualification. A student who satisfies the requirements for the Diploma has demonstrated independent study skills, developed a broad range of academic skills, studied at least three disciplines in depth, engaged with interdisciplinary ideas, reflected on the nature of human knowledge in an international context and taken part in social, physical, and creative pursuits beyond the classroom. The concept of educating the whole person distinguishes the Diploma Program from many other upper secondary programs and provides an excellent preparation for university study.

The Core

Theory of Knowledge (ToK) Theory of Knowledge is a course centered around the question “How do we know?” Students are taught to seek out knowledge through critical thinking and analysis of the Ways of Knowing of Perception, Emotion, Reason and Language. By the end of the course, students should be proficient in formulating arguments and analyzing knowledge claims. The central features of the theory of knowledge course are critical analysis questions called Knowledge Issues.

Page 11: QATAR ACADEMY SIDRA Scholarships 2017-18 v3 · QATAR ACADEMY SIDRA Scholarships School Description Qatar Academy Sidra is a private, non-profit, international school authorized by

The Extended Essay (EE) The Extended Essay is an in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject. Its purpose is to provide a student with an opportunity to engage in independent research at an introductory level. Emphasis is placed on the process of engaging in personal research, on the communication of ideas and information in a logical and coherent manner, and on the overall presentation of the Extended Essay in compliance with IB guidelines. Creativity Activity and Service (CAS) ‘…if you believe in something, you must not just think or talk or write, but must act.” (Peterson

2003)

CAS is at the heart of the Diploma Programme. With its holistic approach, CAS is designed to strengthen and extend students’ personal and interpersonal learning from the PYP and MYP.CAS is organized around the three strands of creativity, activity and service defined as follows.

· Creativity—exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance

· Activity—physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle

· Service—collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need

Group 1 Studies in language and literature-Language A: language and literature English (HL/SL)

Group 1 Language and Literature students will develop an understanding and knowledge for both language and literature through the study of fiction, non-fiction, and mass media texts. Students will critically examine the interactions between text, audience, and purpose in order to discover how language, culture, and context determine the way in which meaning is constructed. Through the study of varied texts from multiple cultures, students will gain a broad understanding of the role of language in people's’ lives, in the media, and in literature. The course will focus on critical reading skills as well as research and oral and written textual analysis.

Group 2 Language Acquisition- Language B Arabic (HL/SL)

Group 2 Language Acquisition- Language B English (HL/SL)

Language B is an additional language-learning course designed for students with some previous learning of that language. It may be studied at either SL or HL. The main focus of the course is on language acquisition and development of language skills. These language skills should be developed through the study and use of a range of written and spoken material. Such material will extend from everyday oral exchanges to literary texts, and should be related to the culture(s) concerned. The material should be chosen to enable students to develop mastery of language skills and intercultural understanding. It should not be intended solely for the study of specific subject matter or content.

Page 13: QATAR ACADEMY SIDRA Scholarships 2017-18 v3 · QATAR ACADEMY SIDRA Scholarships School Description Qatar Academy Sidra is a private, non-profit, international school authorized by

Group 2 Language Acquisition-Language ab initio Spanish (SL)

Students in group 2 can elect to study Spanish as their language. This course if for students who were not able to study Spanish for five years or more. However, this course will still be a rigorous and challenging study of the language and culture of the Spanish speaking world. The language ab initio course is divided into three themes: individual and society, leisure and work, and urban and rural environment. Through the development of receptive, productive and interactive skills, students should be able to respond and interact appropriately in a defined range of everyday situations. The ability to interact in a culturally appropriate manner will be emphasized by utilizing authentic visual, oral, and written texts.

Group 3 Individuals and Societies: History (HL/SL)

Students of history should learn how the discipline works. It is an exploratory subject that poses questions without providing definitive answers. In order to understand the past, students must engage with it both through exposure to primary historical sources and through the work of historians. Historical study involves both selection and interpretation of data and critical evaluation of it. Students of history should appreciate the relative nature of historical knowledge and understanding, as each generation reflects its own world and preoccupations and as more evidence emerges. A study of history both requires and develops an individual’s understanding of, and empathy for, people living in other periods and contexts.

Group 3 Individuals and Societies: Information Technology in a Global Society (HL/SL)

The IB Diploma Programme information technology in a global society (ITGS) course is the study and evaluation of the impacts of information technology (IT) on individuals and society. It explores the advantages and disadvantages of the access and use of digitized information at the local and global level. ITGS provides a framework for the student to make informed judgments and decisions about the use of IT within social contexts. For students ITGS is a valuable course. Developments in IT systems have effectively created a second industrial revolution. As the relationship between human beings and IT systems continues to evolve, ITGS will provide young people with the tools to address the effects of this revolution. Furthermore, ITGS will also uniquely prepare young people with the wisdom to be informed and responsible citizens of tomorrow. Students will engage the course content in a variety of ways including in-depth research, group work and weekly discussions focused on essential questions. They will also work on the production of a real world project for an authentic client. Students are assessed on variety of formats that range from simple statements to in-depth and complex essay writing.

*Group 3 Individuals and Societies: Psychology (HL/SL) Online only

*Explanation of online courses is on page 9

The IB Diploma Programme psychology course is the systematic study of behaviour and mental processes.

Since the psychology course examines the interaction of biological, cognitive and sociocultural influences on human behaviour, it is well placed in group 3, individuals and societies. Students undertaking the course can expect to develop an understanding of how psychological knowledge is generated, developed and applied. This will allow them to have a greater understanding of themselves and appreciate the diversity of human behaviour.

The holistic approach reflected in the curriculum, which sees biological, cognitive and sociocultural analysis being taught in an integrated way ensures that students are able to develop an understanding of what all humans share, as well as the immense diversity of influences on human behaviour and mental processes. The ethical concerns raised by the methodology and application of psychological research are also key considerations of the IB psychology course.

Group 4 Sciences: Biology (HL/SL)

Biology is a broad course which deals with the study of life. Students have a natural interest in biology because not only are we living organisms ourselves, but we depend on many species for our survival, are threatened by some and co-exist with many others. In the biology course, students will attempt to understand the living world at all levels using many different approaches and techniques. The course moves from the smallest scale - the cell, its molecular construction and complex metabolic reactions to investigating human and plant physiology and the interactions that make ecosystems function. Science itself is an international endeavor, the exchange of information and ideas across national boundaries that was initially founded by early scientific studies in Arabic, Indian and Chinese civilizations. There is a recognition that many scientific problems are international in nature and this requires a global approach to research. As an offshoot of this, students will also participate in a group project where they work with students in the Environmental Systems and Societies, as well as the Information Technology in a Global Society courses.

Group 4 Sciences: Environmental Systems and Societies (SL)

The prime intent of this course is to provide students with a coherent perspective of the interrelationships between environmental systems and societies; one that enables them to adopt an informed personal response to the wide range of pressing environmental issues that they will inevitably come to face. Students’ attention can be constantly drawn to their own relationship with their environment and the significance of choices and decisions that they make in their own lives. It is intended that students develop a sound understanding of the interrelationships between environmental systems and societies, rather than a purely journalistic appreciation of environmental issues. The teaching approach therefore needs to be conducive to students evaluating the scientific, ethical and socio-political aspects of issues.

Group 4 Sciences: Chemistry (HL/SL)

Chemistry is an experimental science that combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigational skills.

It is often called the central science as chemical principles underpin both the physical environment in which we live and all biological systems. Apart from being a subject worthy of study in its own right, chemistry is often a prerequisite for many other courses in higher education, such as medicine, biological science and environmental science.

Group 4 Sciences: Sports Exercise and Health Science (SL)

The SEHS course has strong international dimensions such as international sporting competition and the international bodies that regulate them. Ethical issues that exist within sporting competitions are considered. The comprehensive curriculum provides excellent preparation for university courses including those specifically related to Sport, Sports Science or Physical Education.

Page 16: QATAR ACADEMY SIDRA Scholarships 2017-18 v3 · QATAR ACADEMY SIDRA Scholarships School Description Qatar Academy Sidra is a private, non-profit, international school authorized by

Group 5 Mathematics: Mathematics SL

This course caters for students who already possess knowledge of basic mathematical concepts, and who are equipped with the skills needed to apply simple mathematical techniques correctly. The majority of these students will expect to need a sound mathematical background as they prepare for future studies in subjects such as chemistry, economics, psychology and business administration.

Group 5 Mathematics: Mathematical Studies SL

This course is available only at standard level, and is equivalent in status to mathematics SL, but addresses different needs. It has an emphasis on applications of mathematics, and the largest section is on statistical techniques. It is designed for students with varied mathematical backgrounds and abilities. It offers students opportunities to learn important concepts and techniques and to gain an understanding of a wide variety of mathematical topics. It prepares students to be able to solve problems in a variety of settings, to develop 2 Mathematical studies SL subject outline more sophisticated mathematical reasoning and to enhance their critical thinking. The individual project is an extended piece of work based on personal research involving the collection, analysis and evaluation of data. Students taking this course are well prepared for a career in social sciences, humanities, languages or arts. These students may need to utilize the statistics and logical reasoning that they have learned as part of the mathematical studies SL course in their future studies.

Group 6 The Arts: Visual Art (HL/SL)

DP Visual Art students will create and present artworks and accompanying texts that demonstrate high levels of skill acquisition as well as historical and contemporary contextual understanding. Through research, exploration and experimentation students will become familiar with a wide range of materials, approaches and critical concepts faced by artists today. Through intensive studio and academic practice students will follow their personal interests to complex and challenging levels, deepening their awareness of their own artistic visions and artist’s roles in our ever changing world.

Group 6 The Arts: Film (SL/HL)

Film is both a powerful communication medium and an art form.

The creation, presentation and study of film requires courage, passion and curiosity: courage to create individually and as part of a team, to explore ideas through action and harness the imagination, and to experiment; passion to communicate and to act communally, and to research and formulate ideas eloquently; curiosity about self and others and the world, about different traditions, techniques and knowledge, about the past and the future, and about the limitless possibilities of human expression through the art form.

At the core of the IB film course lies a concern with clarity of understanding, critical thinking, reflective analysis, effective involvement and imaginative synthesis that is achieved through practical engagement in the art and craft of film.

Assessment

Students take written examinations at the end of the programme, which are marked by external IB examiners. Students also complete assessment tasks in the school, which are either initially marked by teachers and then moderated by external moderators or sent directly to external examiners. The marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Students can also be awarded up to three additional points for their combined results on theory of knowledge and the extended essay. The diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points, subject to certain minimum levels of performance across the whole programme and to satisfactory participation in the creativity, activity, service requirement. The highest total that a Diploma Programme student can be awarded is 45 points. Assessment is criterion-related, which means student performance is measured against pre-specified assessment criteria based on the aims and objectives of each subject curriculum, rather than the performance of other students taking the same examinations. The range of scores that students have attained remains statistically stable, and universities value the rigour and consistency of Diploma Programme assessment practice.

Online courses

Due to being a small school we recognise that there is a desire for more choices at Diploma level. There is only one company that offeres these courses, Pamoja, http://www.pamojaeducation.com/ There will be a charge associated with the course as the school is offering other taught courses. Online courses are not suitable for every students. Before accepting a student on the course the Principal and DP Coordinator will interview the students and their teachers to ensure that the student is self-motivated and self-disciplined enough to manage a course where it all takes place online and they are not interacting with a teacher or students except in a virtual classroom.
