The Secondary School has been positively buzzing with energy, and smiling faces of students as they greet new friends and start making new ones. All of the students have gotten off to a positive start with learning focused on approaches to learning skills and concept based activities. In Grade 10 Math the students have been finding safe angles for building ramps around the school, Grade 8 have been discussing and persuading each other why shopping is better/ worse than swimming, and Grade 6 have made a fantastic start on time management and organizational skills. Both skills will serve them well as they progress through Secondary School and onto colleges. I want to take this opportunity to thank those of you who managed to attend the Back to School Night yesterday evening. For those of you who had other commitments I have included a copy of the slides shown and the main messages later in this newsletter. If you did not manage to make it to Back to School Night, but would like to come and introduce I am always happy to meet parents. It would be wonderful to see you on October 4th at 7:30am for the Secondary School Coffee Morning. I look forward to spending more time in classroom and speaking more with the students in the upcoming weeks. Please ensure that your child is wearing the correct uniform for school. We know that at the start of the school year it can be hard to ensure on-time delivery. If you do not yet have the full and correct QA Sidra uniform your child should come to school wearing formal grey trousers or long skirt (not jeans, leggings, sweat pants etc), and a plain white shirt.
It can be cold in some of the classrooms, so students can either purchase a school jumper, or they can wear a plain white T-shirt underneath their shirt. Hoodies and sports jerseys should not be worn in the school.

Wearing a school uniform is all part of building a positive school community.
Cell Phone PolicyPlease note that QA Sidra has a
no cell phone policy.
We are aware that students in the Secondary School may need a phone to contact a driver at the start or the end of the day. However, during the hours of 7:00am and 2:00pm the
phone must be switched off and out of sight.
If you do not believe that your child needs a phone for the journey to and from school we would suggest that phones are left at home
or in the car.
School Timings6:40am-7:00am- Drop Off
7:00am- Classes start
2:00pm- Classes Finish
On a Tuesday school finishes at 1:00pm.
Extra Curricular activities will run before school after school and during lunch.
Consistent and punctual attendance at school is important. Classes start at 7:00am and classes finish at 2:00pm on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Tuesday
classes finish at 1:00pm.
During the lunch breaks students are learning social skills, collaboration, leadership, organization and time management skills. In addition there are many extra-curricular
opportunities for students to take part in. These are all required elements to the IB programmes, and will reported on.
From October 1st Tardy slips will also be issued for students who are arriving after 7:00am.
If attendance and tardies slip below a certain level then grading can be impacted and students may not have the required hours to pass the course.
English Language Acquisition
I am pleased to inform you of a new class now offered at QA Sidra: our MYP English
Language Acquisition (Language B English). This course widens Sidra students’
opportunities in language, by offering English to our current Spanish and Arabic
courses.

A Note from the PTA
Welcome back to school!!!
We hope this year is going to be great. As a PTA, we invite all the parents to join our Facebook page "QAS Parent Teacher Association". We use it to announce different events and for the parents to reach out to each other. We hope it is a great resource for everyone.
We are always looking for volunteers and we will announce the needs for volunteers on Facebook and to specific events as they come up. Volunteers will be needed for moving with the school, the library, book fairs, Arabic Department, field trips, and PTA sponsored events such as International Day.
First event of the year is Teacher Appreciation Day on October 5th, 2016. We encourage all the parents to send a treat, or a healthy snack for the teachers on that day. Our teachers loved receiving and sharing the treats last year.
To carry on traditions, we would love to sponsor the second annual International Day on October 29th. The only way this event will get off the ground is if enough parents volunteer to represent their own respective countries in a booth or table. Last year's international day featured at least 10 countries and was LOADS of fun.
Lastly, we hope everyone has started to get settled in and figured out transportation. If you still have transportation needs, please feel free to reference the past newsletter.
