2. Solar Fuel Saver (SFS) Motivation

Why to hybridize your diesel plant?

The price for PV systems

decreased by more than 60%

in the last 3 years

Fuel costs for Diesel

Generators are constantly

rising

In many countries PV-Diesel Systems present already today an economic viable solution. This effect will even increase in the next years. In the Philippines PV energy is already between 30 and 150% cheaper than

diesel energy

Time

$ / kWh

Today

Generation costs by Diesel Generators

In most of the sunbelt countries generation costs

by diesel generators are > 0,30 € / kWh

Whereas generation costs in the same area by PV

applications are < 0,15 € / kWh1)

1) E.g. in Germany feed in tariff for 1MW plants is currently at 0,13 €/ kWh (0.17USD/kWh)

3. SFS Systems and Features

Solar power is directly injected in

the diesel generator mini grid

Reduction of fuel consumption

due to solar energy penetration

No batteries are needed

The SFS controller manages the

Solar power output according to

the operation of the Diesel

generator

The Solar Fuel Saver (SFS): General overview

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The Solar Fuel Saver System (SFS) is in principal equal to standard PV Solar System, except that the SFS has a Control Unit more. The PV System (Modules, Inverter etc.) is directly connected to the Mini Grid. Which reduce the Operating time of the Diesel Genset by of setting the Diesel consumption. Advantage for such a system are that no Batteries are needed. The SFS controller manages the Solar power output according to operation of the Diesel.

SFS Integration: implementation in existing system

A : measuring point for generator data

used for regulating PV power (voltage,

current, frequency, and power factor)

B: measuring point for the load data

only used for data logging (Voltage,

Current, frequency, and power factor)

A B

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Beside new systems, the SFS can be implemented in an existing Diesel System (or Mini Grid) as well. The controller would measure the Generator Output Parameter as well the Load demand (of the consumer) and controls then the PV Output by regulating the Inverter.

SFS Integration: implementation in a system with public grid connection

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Another variable is the implementation in a mixed Mini Grid where Diesel Generator and Public Grid are available. This is case is in general needed if the public Grid is very unstable, or the ELC ($/kWH) is usually very high. Here would the controller extend by a further measuring of the public grid. (Question)- What happen if the Diesel Generator stops operating, grid is available and Solar would be available? Would the Inverter should down because of the Setting?

Functionality of the SFS

The solar power reduces the power generated by the diesel generator

As soon as the generator reaches critical part load operation the SFS controller decreases the power output of the solar plant

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So how can we explain the function of the controlling and regulation of the SFS. (Blue) show the Genset Load curve. As you can see the Genset Load follows the Load Demand (red) in times where no Solar Power is available. 1 marks the point where Solar Power (yellow curve) initiate and start to support the Diesel Genset. The Solar Power reduces the Genset (blue). At around 2 pm we have the occurrence that the load demand drop (red) which leads to a drop of the Diesel Genset which reach the critical part load. The critical part load (green) marks the min base load which a Diesel Genset needs to operate efficient enough. If a Diesel Genset reach this point and we still have enough Solar Power, Solar Power will be reduced. This of course we won’t to avoid, because this means a loss of rentability.

Technical Features

The Solar Fuel Saver can be integrated into existing or new diesel

generator grids. It operates with all standard generators

(isochronous or droop controlled)

By regulating the solar power output the SFS controller

guarantees an optimized operation of the Diesel generator

Protection against minimal part load

Reverse power protection

Additional control options of Diesel generator: time based , part

load

Integrated data logging of system performance

Remote monitoring via internet (optional via GSM)

Simple installation (plug and play)

4. Maximized Operational Security

Maximized Operational Security

Through:

Feasibility study through our experts

Usage of technical proven and tested equipment

Through a 24/7 Monitoring

Frequent annual Maintenance check of the system through juwi Partner

Remote Monitoring of the system with error analysis within 48 hrs

Feasibility Study

Load information:

Hourly load data over the entire day

Load seasonality appreciation thanks to hourly

load data from different season

Diesel consumption per day/month/year

Datasheet of the diesel generator

Precise Diesel price and increase expectations

These Data can be obtained from:

Diesel generator controller (Data logger) if any

Electricity metering system

Precise control from the diesel purchase/tank

level…

Presenter
Presentation Notes
As you could see some pages earlier, we got to know the load curve is the important key. Therefore hourly data over the entire day, for some weeks are needed. Seasonal changes are important especially in Resorts. To undergo a economically analysys Diesel consumption and Diesel price are needed. If a customer don’t have a Diesel Generator Controllor or Meter, we would advise to install an electrical metering system with 10 min data logging.

Feasibility Study

Where to install and why?

A Distance between SFS and Measuring Point no longer than a few meters

B Optimal Distance between SFS and Inverters under 100m. If longer than 100m additional technical equipment needed

C Distance between Solar Field and Inverters to be optimized to reduce losses on the DC side.

System Components

SMA – a standard PV product Fuel Saver (FS) consists of several switch

boxes

Limited to SMA inverters

Ready developed product with limited

modification possibilities

Not suitable for small system

More expensive

juwi Solar Fuel Saver - a flexible project

approach Touch display for commissioning, operation and monitoring One box solution (plug and play) The SFS can be adapted to clients needs as it is a in-house development SFS can also be implemented in PV systems < 300 kW Can start and stop the generator Principal possibility to communicate with any PV inverter (not limited to one brand) 2 field test projects with 35kWp solar and 30kVA Diesel generator (very high PV penetration)

Presenter
Presentation Notes

Monitoring

On customers demand the plant can also be monitored from our control room in Asia and Germany.

The monitoring then includes: Remote Monitoring 24/7 Disruption management: prioritization of the different alarms, decision of sending or not corrective maintenance team Disruption assignment: missioning the corrective maintenance team in the corresponding country to go on site and deliver them the plan of action

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The logged data is accessible through the internet if the Solar Fuel Saver is connected to the internet. Otherwise the data will be stored internally and can be downloaded with a USB-Stick on site.

Monitoring

The data logging of the system is realized by the Cluster Controller inside the Solar Fuel Saver.

Logged Data: PV power [kW] Power of the whole system [kW] Power Factor [PF] Frequency [f] The energy produced per day [kWh/day] The total energy produced since commissioning [kWh]

Plant yield Monthly values, diagrams and graphs Performance Ratio [%] The faults and availability of the plant

Alarms For each inverter Automated yield analysis routines

Risk Reduction – System Optimization

Optimized system Design Optimization of the SD of the plant to the load curve (orientation, size…)

Financial optimization of the plant to maximize IRR and minimize pay back time

Step by step solution to adapt to financial capabilities of the client and the market

environment

Range of solution Solar: from 70kWp up to 6 MWp

Compatible with single generator system or multiple generator aggregates

Diesel: from 150kVA up to 30/40 MVA

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Feasibility through experts means: that juwi check the size of the system regarding the provided data. If suitable juwi can provide a solution from xxkWp to xMWp of PV installed Power. In reality these means a Diesel Generator Capacity from xxx kWp to xx MWp or (kVA)
