Page 2: Questions 4&5: Who would be the audience for your media product? How did you attract/address your audience?

In my magazine I have decided to focus on a 16-24 year old age range of both genders who enjoy both old, but specifically new, emerging music.

I think my audience will enjoy a variety of different activities such as;

Photography Going to gigs, festivals – just seeing live music Keeping up to date with trends Very technically diverse – has Twitter, Facebook,

Instagram, Tumblr, smart phone users Like vintage clothing Going out – cinema etc.

I can see my readers as being very technologically mind (hence my heavy use of multimedia links in my magazine) I would imagine them to have accounts for and regularly use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and as they arose, new social media platforms. My magazine would have accounts on each of these sites and they would be updated regularly to match my audience’s use of these sites.

I would also have an iPhone/Smartphone app which would feature news, photos and extended interviews continuing on from the magazine content.

Through my research I saw that social media and internet content was extremely useful and essentially necessary to make it appeal.

As my target audience is 16-24 year olds, social media is very important with ‘16-24 year-olds use text messages and social networking to communicate with friends and family more than other age groups, and have increased their use of these methods’ (1).

By including these features it means that my target audience can keep up-to-date with all the latest music news while on the move, also with the use of Smart phones and iPhones ever-increasing I would have an app created which would be easy to use and meant quick and easy access to music information that my audience really want to read about.

I wanted to combine my target audience’s love of old and new music so I thought by running a story about a ‘new’ version of an old star would achieve this successfully.

I kept the mode of address in my interview quite informal and chatty as I wanted Lauren to come across as an engaging individual with a lot to say about her prospective career. Also by making it informal and keeping the language colloquial it means it doesn’t require a lot of effort to engage and understand the article compared to say, a large, very text-based piece which you could possibly expect to see in a magazine with an older target audience – such as a classical music publication. The pull quotes are chatty and thought provoking and incite an interest in the article. This is all applicable to the introduction to the left of her head, I kept this informal and jokey with the line about Lauren ‘has arrived, on time and without a single television being thrown out a window’ contrasting her to rock stars of old.

I wanted to make my magazine’s front cover different to others and stand out, appealing to a different audience to the standard ‘pop’ audience so I decided to use a black and white image. I think my coverlines are in fun fonts and don’t seem to harsh or serious and by carrying on these fonts throughout the product I think I have kept the fun aspect but still not detracted from the main focal point of the magazine being the music which is what my audience are really interested in.
