Dear Parish Family, Next Saturday, October 14th we are holding our annual Saint Isaac Jogues Parish Feastival to celebrate our parish patronal feast and to provide the opportunity for parishioners, friends and supporters of our parish to join together for a wonderful evening of food, fun, music and games. It’s an event for the entire family. The cost for the evening is nominal since the purpose of the Feastival is to help build-up parish wide spirit and fraternity. John Vrdolyak and the Evangelization Committee have been working hard to make this year’s Feastival a great success. We’ve always had a great time in the past and I can’t encourage you enough, to join us... bring family and friends for a wonderful evening in the parking lot of the church. On June 29, 1930 Saint Isaac Jogues was canonized as a saint, and our newly formed parish had its first Mass in the Hinsdale Village Theater in his honor. For the next two years, Sunday Masses were held in the theater and later on, in a rented store. Daily Masses were held in the Rectory Chapel, which at that time, was located in the basement of a home at 33 S. Garfield Street. Father Tormey (the founding pastor of Saint Isaac Jogues Parish) purchased property at Fourth and Vine and Clay Streets, along with the home at 434 S. Clay Street for the Rectory. Our parish was formed to honor the canonization of Saint Isaac Jogues — a Jesuit “North American Martyr,” martyred for the faith on October 18, 1646 — who shed his blood for the Faith and courageously witness to Christ and establish the Church in North America. Our Parish Feastival is a wonderful way to celebrate the Heritage of Faith that IS Saint Isaac Jogues Parish. Let’s all eagerly come-out to celebrate our Catholic Faith and honor the courageous witness of Saint Isaac Jogues. I’m sure the evening will be a wonderful time for all who will join us. God’s Blessings!

Feast of Saint Isaac Jogues October 19th Our Parish Patronal Feast On Friday, October 19th the Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Isaac Jogues, John de Brebeuf and Companions. It is our parish patronal feast. Happy “feast day!” to all parishioners of this wonderful parish. The image of Saint Isaac Jogues that you see here, is used frequently on our bulletin, our parish stationary, and other parish publications. It is an original work of art commissioned in the Fall of 2010. Saint Isaac is depicted holding a “model” of our church building — symbolizing his care, protection, and intercession for the church and parish named in his honor, and placed under his patronage. Isaac Jogues [born in 1607], and his companions, were the first martyrs of the North America continent. As a young Jesuit, Isaac taught literature in France. He gave up that career to work among the Huron Native

Americans in the New World, and in 1636 he and his companions, under the leadership of John de Brebeuf, arrived in Quebec. The Hurons were constantly warred upon by the Iroquois, and within in a few years Father Jogues was captured by the Iroquois, and imprisoned for thirteen months. His letters and journals tell how he and his companions were led village to village, how they were beaten tortured and forced to watch as their Huron converts were mangled and killed. Through the Dutch, he had a chance to escape. He returned to France, bearing the marks of his sufferings. Several fingers had been cut, chewed or burnt off. He was welcomed home as a hero. In 1646, Isaac Jogues decided to return to his missions among the Hurons. He hoped that the recently signed peace treaty would be honored. Instead, they were captured, and on October 18, 1646, Father Isaac Jogues was tomahawked and beheaded. His companion, Jean de Lalande was killed. Persecution by the natives continued for a number of years culminating in the martyrdom of Saint John de Brebeuf in 1649. In all, nine companions of Isaac Jogues and John de Brebeuf were martyred for the faith. It was under the patronage and courageous witness of faith of Saint Isaac Jogues that George Cardinal Mundelein established our parish in June of 1930. His Eminence appointed Father Thomas Tormey as the founding pastor. By June 26, 1932, Father Tormey had acquired property and completed the building of a combination church and school. “Faith and heroism planted belief in Christ’s Cross deep in our land. The church in North America sprang from the blood of martyrs. Are we as eager to keep that cross standing in our midst? Do we bear witness to the gift of faith in us? [Saint of the Day, OSV Press]. This is the beauty and challenge the lives of these holy martyrs place before us today. Probably, none of us will be called to physical martyrdom. But, ALL OF US are called to heroic witness and virtue in the world, in our Nation, in our parish, at school, at work, and in our own families — often the most difficult place to witness to the truth of Jesus Christ. Let’s pray, asking the intercession of Saint Isaac Jogues, that we will be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

God our Father, you consecrated the first beginnings

of the faith in North America by the preaching and martyrdom of

Saint Isaac Jogues, Saint John De Brebeuf, and their companions.

By the help of their prayers may the Christian faith continue to grow

throughout the world.

Bad boy Ruth... That was me! George Herman "Babe" Ruth, Jr. [1895-1948]. “The Kids Can’t Take it If we Don’t Give it!” — Guideposts/October, 1948.

D on't get the idea that I'm proud of my “harum-scarum” youth. I'm not. I simply had a rotten start in life, and it took

me a long time to get my bearings. Looking back to my youth, I honestly don't think I knew the difference between right and wrong. I spent much of my early boyhood living over my father's saloon, in Baltimore—and when I wasn't living over it, I was in it, soaking up the atmosphere. I hardly knew my parents. St. Mary's Industrial School in Baltimore, where I was finally taken, has been called an orphanage and a reform school. It was, in fact, a training school for orphans, incorrigibles, delinquents and runaways picked up on the streets of the city. I was listed as an incorrigible. I guess I was. Perhaps I would always have been but for Brother Matthias, the greatest man I have ever known, and for the religious training I received there which has since been so important to me. As I look back now, I realize that knowledge of God was a big crossroads with me. I got one thing straight (and I wish all kids did)—that God was Boss. He was not only my Boss but Boss of all my bosses. Up till then, like all bad kids, I hated most of the people who had control over me and could punish me. I began to see that I had a higher Person to reckon with who never changed, whereas my earthly authorities changed from year to year. Those who bossed me had the same self-battles—they, like me, had to account to God. I also realized that God was not only just, but merciful. He knew we were weak and that we all found it easier to be stinkers than good sons of God, not only as kids but all through our lives. I've seen a great number of "he-men" in my baseball career, but never one equal to Brother Matthias. He stood six feet six and weighed 250 pounds. It was all muscle. He could have been successful at anything he wanted to in life—and he chose the church. It was he who introduced me to baseball. Very early he noticed that I had some natural talent for throwing and catching. He used to back me in a corner of the big yard at St. Mary's and bunt a ball to me by the hour, correcting the mistakes I made with my hands and feet. I never forget the first time I saw him hit a ball. Thanks to Brother Matthias I was able to leave St. Mary's in 1914 and begin my professional career with the famous Baltimore Orioles. Out on my own... free from the rigid rules of a religious school . . . boy, did it go to my head. I began really to cut capers. I strayed from the church, but don't think I forgot my religious training. I just overlooked it. I prayed often and hard, but like many irrepressible young fellows, the swift tempo of living shoved religion into the background. So what good was all the hard work and ceaseless interest of the Brothers, people would argue? You can't make kids religious, they say, because it just won't take. Send kids to Sunday School and they too often end up hating it and the church. Don't you believe it. As far as I'm concerned, and I think as far as most kids go, once religion sinks in, it stays there—deep down. The lads who get religious training, get it where it counts—in the roots. They may fail it, but it never fails them. When the score is against them, or they get a bum pitch, that unfailing something inside will be there to draw on. I've seen it with kids. I know from the letters they write me. The more I think of it, the more important I feel it is to give kids "the works"

as far as religion is concerned. They'll never want to be holy—they'll act like tough monkeys in contrast, but somewhere inside will be a solid little chapel. It may get dusty from neglect, but the time will come when the door will be opened with much relief. But the kids can't take it, if we don't give it to them. I've been criticized as often as I've praised for my activities with kids on the grounds that what I did was for publicity. Well, criticism doesn't matter. I never forgot where I came from. Every dirty-faced kid I see is another useful citizen. No one knew better than I what it meant not to have your own home, a backyard, your own kitchen and icebox. That's why all through the years, even when the big money was rolling in, I'd never forget St. Mary's, Brother Matthias and the boys I left behind. I kept going back. As I look back to those moments when I let the kids down—they were my worst. I guess I was so anxious to enjoy life to the fullest that I forgot the rules or ignored them. Once in a while you can get away with it, but not for long. When I broke training, the effects were felt by myself and by the ball team—and even by the fans. While I drifted away from the church, I did have my own "altar," a big window of my New York apartment overlooking the city lights. Often I would kneel before that window and say my prayers. I would feel quite humble then. I'd ask God to help me not make such a big fool of myself and pray that I'd measure up to what He expected of me. In December, 1946 I was in French Hospital, New York, facing a serious operation. Paul Carey, one of my oldest and closest friends, was by my bed one night. "They're going to operate in the morning, Babe," Paul said. "Don't you think you ought to put your house in order?" I didn't dodge the long, challenging look in his eyes. I knew what he meant. For the first time I realized that death might strike me out. I nodded, and Paul got up, called in a Chaplain, and I made a full confession. "I'll return in the morning and give you Holy Communion," the chaplain said," But you don't have to fast." "I'll fast," I said. I didn't have even a drop of water. As I lay in bed that evening I thought to myself what a comforting feeling to be free from fear and worries. I now could simply turn them over to God. Later on, my wife brought in a letter from a little kid in Jersey City. "Dear Babe", he wrote, "Everybody in the seventh grade class is pulling and praying for you. I am enclosing a medal, which if you wear will make you better. Your pal—Mike Quinlan. P.S. I know this will be your 61st homer. You'll hit it." I asked them to pin the Miraculous Medal to my pajama coat. I've worn the medal constantly ever since. I'll wear it to my grave.

Pope Francis and Abortion October is Respect Life Month

Pope Francis believes there should be no compromise on the longstanding pro-life teachings of the Catholic Church. He makes it clear that the Catholic Church takes two heartfelt positions when it comes to abortion: First, the church takes a clear cut stance in opposition to abortion itself as the destruction of human life.

Secondly, he minces no words when it comes to abortion, but does offer a gentle sentiment to women who have opted to abort their unborn children. Abortion is the murder of an innocent person. But if there is sin, forgiveness must be facilitated. Secondly the Catholic Church also believes in restoration for women who have had abortions. As the Bible plainly teaches, there is no sin too big for God to forgive via the redemption found in the life-saving death and resurrection of his son Jesus Christ. Catholic organizations have spent decades reaching out to post-abortive women and offering Bible studies and counseling to help repair their relationship with God and provide them emotional and spiritual support. The Holy Father is strong to stress those themes of Mercy, Grace and forgiveness. He knows that many women are emotionally and spiritually scarred before finding God’s forgiveness for her sin. “Think of a woman who has physical memory of her child, which oftentimes happens, and who cries, who cries for years without the courage to go to see a priest,” the pope explained. “Do you realize how many people can finally breathe?” he asked, reminding people that forgiveness is there for those who seek it. Francis said that while women who abort their children need to seek and accept the Lord’s forgiveness, it is imperative that they never commit the sin again.

Choices to serve abound!.... There are a variety of ways young women can devote themselves to the Lord’s service, as consecrated women religious. Pretty much, any honorable profession is represented in Religious Life in the Church. Young ladies should be open to, and be willing to explore the various opportunities available to them in a life of service to the Church, dedicated to the Lord in Religious Life. Are you considering Religious Life?... Come and See - Vocation Discernment Retreat October 13 - 15, 2017  The Diocesan Priesthood, what we are used to seeing as priestly ministry in our parish is just one way of living the priesthood, a vocation to a life of service. Religious Life offers a different way of life.. A life of vowed religious life and community living. An opportunity for Catholic men between the ages 18 to 45 years to discern how God is calling them while participating in the Benedictine monastic life at St. Procopius Abbey in Lisle, Illinois. During the retreat, presentations are given about the Benedictine monastic life and there are opportunities for discussions and questions, silent prayer, reading and reflection.

ST. ISAAC JOGUES SCHOOL Weekly News

SIJ School Family Mass - Saturday, October 14

We hope everyone will attend our SIJ School Family Mass on Saturday, October 14th.

About Kindergarten Prep Here at SIJ we are thrilled to begin our Kindergarten Prep program. This class offers enrichment for our students in a variety of ways. Students partake in specials, such as Library, Music, Spanish, and Physical Education. This routine helps the student become more familiar with specials when entering Kindergarten. Not only will they enrich their skills, but also help them become familiar with the routine of Kindergarten. In Kindergarten Prep students also engage in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). We believe STEM develops lifelong skills, so why not begin learning and exploring at a young age. In this class students work in centers focusing on a variety of subject matters they are learning in the classroom. These centers include handwriting, math, religion, science, and technology. Working in centers helps build the student's stamina. It is vital children at this age develop stamina which will foster their learning and schooling for years to come. We work with and engage in activities regularly with Kindergarten, so students are ensured a smooth transition upon entering Kindergarten the following year. We are thrilled with our addition of Kindergarten Prep!

For this first time this year we will offer winter boys basketball in an inter-Church league with St. John of the Cross, St. Cletus, St. Francis and other area Churches. High school students from our parish are welcome to join an SIJ team – as long as they are not playing basketball for their schools during 2017 - 2018. It will typically involve one game on Saturday nights (rotating between parishes/facilities) and one practice on a week night (here at SIJ - dates & times TBA). The boys season will take place December – February with the playoffs that first week of March. The girls season starts in late February and goes through April – not sure of playoff dates.

The fee is $115 (payable to St. Isaac Jogues), which includes team t-shirt. Registration Steps: 1) Sign-up at the following link: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0848A9AE2AA2FD0-

Teaching Our Children What it Means to be A People of Life This October marks the 46th anniversary of the nation’s Respect Life Month. Although some of our children are still too young to fully understand the issue, we are all a People of Life, and we can begin to teach our children the “Three Rs” of a pro-life education: 1.) Recognize that every human life is special and sacred, no matter how small, sick, or old; 2.) Respect all human life and every living thing; 3.) Take Responsibility in helping to protect and defend all human life. So, how do we allow our young children to maintain their innocence and joy of life while also instilling a sense of compassion and prayerfulness for the unborn? How do we educate our older children without adding to their many pressures and fears? Here are some ideas: ♥ Children can be taught at a very young age that life begins at conception ~ from when the very first cell of a new baby is created. We must emphasize that life is a continuum. Just as a growing baby in its mother’s womb is less developed than a newborn baby, so is a toddler less developed than an eight-year-old child, who is less developed than a teenager, and so on. ♥ Explain how babies grow by reading books that show pictures of developing babies in the mother’s womb. There are three children’s books that explain, with beautiful illustrations, the wonderful nine-month journey of a baby in utero: Angel in the Waters by Regina Doman, The Miracle of Me by Amy Pedersen and Before You Were Born by Jennifer Davis. These books beautifully show children that, indeed, their life began before the day they were born! Check with the SIJ school library or the Hinsdale Public Library to see if these books are available. ♥ As your family prays together, remind your children to pray for babies living inside “mommies’ bellies,” and for the parents who have just found out they are going to have a baby. They can pray for the disabled, the terminally ill, the elderly, the handicapped ~ all people who need our protection and deserve our respect. Older children can pray for more people to support pro-life causes and for the effectiveness of those who do pro-life work. ♥You can talk to your older children about the fascinating facts of fetal development, i.e., the baby’s heart starts beating at 3 weeks, at 2 months all body systems are present and the baby can suck its thumb, and at 12 weeks the facial characteristics already resemble those of the parents. There are many facts that your children might find very “cool” while simultaneously developing a greater understanding of the importance of protecting that human life. A good web site for facts about fetal development is www.nrlc.org/archive/abortion/facts/fetaldevelopment.html ♥ Encourage your older children to learn more and become active. The Respect Life Ministry has numerous opportunities through which teenagers can become involved. They can join or start a prolife club at their school, pray at the local abortion clinic or volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center. You can write or call your Illinois and US legislators if your teenager or family is interested in urging them to support pro-life legislation. If you have any questions, concerns or would like more information about how you can talk to your children about abortion or other Life issues, please call the parish office and ask for the Respect Life Ministry.

October, 2017 Dear St. Isaac Jogues School/Religious Education Parents, The month of October has special significance in the life of the Church because it is Respect Life Month. It is a time to educate ourselves and others about life issues, to pray, and to affirm the teachings and truth of Jesus Christ in all parts of our daily life. We are all called by our baptism to defend life at all stages from conception to natural death. God Our Father is the only Author of Life. Through the teachings of His Son, Jesus Christ, we are lifted up by this truth. This October, our parish will join many parishes across the diocese and our nation and erect a Field of Crosses in solemn memorial to the nearly 3,500 innocent lives being aborted daily in the United States. This is just one way our parish acknowledges the tragedy wrought by a diminished respect for the gift of life, as we seek to raise prayerful awareness and action to right this horrible wrong. It is also a message to all post-abortive men and women that the Church is a place of mercy, forgiveness and hope. We stand ready to assist those who need help dealing with the aftermath of an abortion. Various opportunities for assistance are available. Should you need help, contact one of our priests. Our hope is that this display moves people to work toward seeking mercy and peace, to become more active in protecting the unborn, and to pray. We are sensitive to the reality that the crosses raise questions in the minds of children. Abortion is not an easy topic to discuss. It is important for children to begin learning, and to continue learning, the truth of this matter. Attached is an information sheet with age-appropriate ways to help parents approach life issues, specifically abortion, with their children. The crosses will be erected on the parish lawn from October 1 through October 15. Hopefully, the visual impact of the Field of Crosses will be a powerful and moving reminder for your children, one that will lead them toward a yearning to learn, pray and act to end abortion. “Children, too, have an apostolate of their own. In their own measure, they are true living witnesses of Christ among their companions.” (Second Vatican Council, Decree on the Apostolate of Lay People). We thank you for your attention to this important aspect of our Catholic faith. We encourage you to continue to familiarize yourself with the many aspects of the pro-life stance and mission of the Church. Know that your priests, deacons, staff and Respect Life Ministry are eager to answer your questions and help you grow in your faith and love for Jesus-who is the “Author and Giver of Life” May the Lord bless you, and may Mary, the Mother of Life, keep you in Her care! Sincerely, Father William De Salvo Father Rodolphe Arty Amy Keane Pastor, St. Isaac Jogues Parochial Vicar Respect Life Ministry
