Flame of Faith Saint John Paul II Eucharistic Adoration Chapel Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in the Saint John Paul II Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. Intentions listed below are remembered for ONE WEEK [Sunday to Sunday]. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intentions remembered and prayed for are available in the lobby of the Adoration Chapel. The candles will burn this week for the following intentions: For a co-worker’s husband as he faces health issues For healthy pregnancy for my daughter-in-law For God’s blessings for my family For God’s protection in our time of need For my wife’s health For our daughters

Dear Parish Family, Last Sunday we began the reading of the sixth chapter of Saint John’s Gospel. We heard the story of the Feeding of the Five Thousand. From so little (just five loaves and two fish), the Lord produces an abundance of blessings — all are satisfied. This story has always been seen as a prefiguring, a “looking ahead” to the Eucharist itself. Throughout August we will be hearing from this rather long chapter in John’s Gospel, known as the Bread of Life Discourse. In it, Jesus expounds on the mystery of the Eucharist — His body and blood given to us as food for our journey home to Heaven. So much has been said, so much written about the Eucharist. And yet, the mystery of Christ’s Real Presence cannot be fully understood or appreciated. Because we receive the Eucharist every week, for some of us every day, it is easy for us to take the gift, the miracle of Christ’s Real Presence for granted. As we move through the month of August and hear the Bread of Life Discourse each week, I would encourage you to deeper faith, greater devotion, and a more serious effort to grow in your knowledge of the Eucharist and of the Eucharistic celebration, so that you can grow in your love for Jesus, really and truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I would encourage you to nourish both mind and spirit as we meditate upon the Eucharist over the next several weeks. First of all: Read the sixth chapter of Saint John’s Gospel in its entirety. Also, read the section on the Eucharist in the Catechism of the Catholic Church [part 2, article 3, #1322-1419. Catechism of the Catholic Church]. Secondly, make a visit to the Perpetual Adoration Chapel of the Annunciation, located directly behind the sanctuary of our church. You can access the chapel from the rear of the church building, near the Rectory Office. The chapel is available 24-hours a day, 7-days a week for private, silent prayer in the presence of Jesus Christ, really and truly present — body and blood, soul and divinity — in the Blessed Sacrament. The Eucharist is exposed in the chapel for adoration. Jesus is waiting for you, He wants your love, He wants your time and attention. The invitation is there, the rest is up to you. You can’t force love, you can’t force a relationship, you can’t force someone to “want” to be with you. And so, silently the Lord waits in the Adoration Chapel for YOU! Don’t disappoint Him. Especially if you have never visited the chapel, I would encourage you to make this the time to do it. Jesus is waiting for YOU! Our celebration and reception of the Eucharist should lead us to deeper faith and greater love. That LOVE should motivate us to action... commit to a deeper, more meaningful, more “involved” practice of our Catholic Faith. Do something to show love.

Thanks to all who have so generously responded to the appeal for the special $1.2 million fund to Preserve Our Heritage and repair our deteriorating Church Tower, concrete work around the church, church doors, and mechanical systems for our church, parish center, and school. Your faith in action speaks volumes of your commitment to Christ and His Church! Thank you so much. I would encourage those who have not given to make a sacrificial gift to keep our church in good repair... to allow zeal for God’s House to consume you [Psalm 69]. Let’s all be active and joy-filled supporters of the Heritage of Faith that IS Saint Isaac Jogues Parish. Give Jesus your heart, and He will give you Heaven!

Father De Salvo

Pope Francis I – The Transfiguration of Jesus The feast is celebrated on August 6th each year

The Transfiguration takes place as Christ is on his way to Jerusalem to fulfill the prophecies through his death on the cross. Jesus takes Peter, James and John away to a high mountain in order to reveal his glory in advance to them, to strengthen them in faith for what is to come - the way of the Cross.

The three disciples are frightened, while a cloud covers and rings out from above ... the voice of the Father, This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him (Mark 9:7). Christ's glory is revealed because his full adherence to the will of the Father makes his humanity transparent to the glory of God, who is Love. Moses and Elijah appear next to Christ at the Transfiguration to show he is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets, that everything begins and ends in Jesus. The invitation at the Transfiguration, for the disciples as well as for the faithful today, is to listen to Jesus and to follow him, laying down our lives as a gift of love for one another in obedience to the will of the Father. The way of Jesus always leads us to happiness, do not forget it! There will always be a cross in the middle, but at the end ... He always leads us to happiness.

Saint Peregrine Devotions Tuesday evening at 7pm Monthly Devotions in Honor of Saint Peregrine Patron of those who suffer from Cancer or any incurable disease or condition

Tuesday is the FIRST TUESDAY of the month, and we will hold our monthly devotions in honor of Saint Peregrine, the patron saint of those who suffer from cancer or any incurable disease or condition, at 7pm in the church. Cancer and chronic sickness and pains touches every family. Many are suffering, and we all need prayers and encouragement from one another. When we are linked by the power of prayer, we, as it were hold each other’s hand as we walk side by side along a slippery path; and thus by the bounteous disposition of charity, it comes about that the harder each one leans on the other, the more firmly we are riveted together in true Christian love... [Saint Gregory the Great] The early facts about Saint Peregrine are few and uncertain. He was born in Italy around 1265. He and his family were part of the anti-Papal forces seeking to usurp the temporal power of the Pope in the Papal States. When Saint Phillip Benizi was sent by the Pope to preach reform, Peregrine, then a young man was part of the protest against him, and even struck the Saint. The moment of striking Saint Phillip seemed to drastically change Peregrine. This enemy of the Church had a dramatic change of heart. He began to channel his energies into good works and eventually he joined the Servants of Mary, and pronounced his vows as a Servite at the age of 30. He never was ordained a priest, never thinking himself worthy of such a great honor. But, he nonetheless dedicated his life to the sick, the poor, and the fringe people of society. He also imposed a special penance on himself- to stand whenever it was not necessary to sit. This led to varicose veins. The varicose veins deteriorated into an open, running sore on his leg. The sore was later diagnosed as cancer. The wound became so obvious, odorous and painful that the local surgeon scheduled surgery to amputate the leg. Suddenly, Peregrine was confronted with the ugliness and suffering of his own life. The night before the operation he prayed before the crucifix in the Priory Chapter Room. His prayer led him to a deep trance-like sleep, during which he envisioned the crucified Christ leaving the cross and touching his cancerous leg. When Peregrine awoke, he discovered the wound healed and the leg saved. He lived for twenty more years, and died on May 1st, 1345 at the age of 80. Canonized a Saint on December 27th, 1726, he has been named the patron Saint of those who suffer from cancer. The Feast of Saint Peregrine is celebrated annually on May 4th. The power of his intercession is known to be great. Join us Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. for the devotions in honor of Saint Peregrine. The blessing with the relic of Saint Peregrine will be given, and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will also be a part of the evening service. If you, or someone you know, suffers from this disease, join us for prayer and ask for healing, an increase in faith, acceptance of God’s will, and strength to bear whatever God asks of you.

Thank you for your continued support and generosity to Saint Isaac Jogues Parish. Special thanks to all those who have already responded and have generously given to our special Preserving Our Heritage Fund to complete the necessary repairs to the tower of our church, our grounds and facilities. Your gifts enable us to maintain and improve our programs and outreach to those we serve, to build-up the Catholic Faith in the Hinsdale area. Your generosity also allows us to undertake the necessary major capital repairs and improvements to our facilities. We are blessed with a beautiful parish campus, filled with substantial, solid, and beautiful buildings — built over a span of more than 80 years. And, all of them are aging, and need our constant attention. Well used on a daily basis, they require extensive ongoing maintenance. In early May, Father De Salvo sent to all registered parishioners a mailing which detailed the four projects we have to complete to keep our facilities safe, sound, and in proper working order. We need a total of almost $1.2 million to complete the necessary repairs to our buildings. After the church work is completed, we will embark on the campaign to renovate the original 1932 school building, a long overdue project that will modernize the facility and classrooms with the technology and environment needed for our children's religious education and pre-k through 8th grade education. The projected $6 to $12 million dollar project is in the beginning planning phases and, hopefully, as the church project nears completion late this summer, we are excited to roll out the details for the future school project. Each of the projects are necessary, and we would like to have them fully funded as soon as possible so that we can have the work completed this summer and avoid further damage and expense to our buildings and grounds. The projects include:

Repairs to the church tower and roof. Repair damaged plaster, painting, and HVAC of Choir Loft. Replacement of the wooden church doors and frames. Repair broken cement and site work in front of church,

narthex, school, and parking lot. Roof repair, replacement of aging and obsolete components

of mechanical system to allow our church and building systems to function properly and avoid damage and future “emergency” repairs.
