CHARITY AND THE BUDDY CHARLES CONCERT

Charity is the last and the greatest of the three theologi-cal virtues; the other two are faith and hope. While it is o en called love and confused in the popular under-standing with common defini ons of the la er word, charity is more than a subjec ve feeling or even an ob-jec ve ac on of the will toward another person. Like the other theological virtues, charity is supernatural in the sense that God is both its origin and its object. As Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J., writes in his Modern Catholic Dic-

onary, charity is the "infused supernatural virtue by which a person loves God above all things for his [that is, God's] own sake, and loves others for God's sake." Like all virtues, charity is an act of the will, and the exer-cise of charity increases our love for God and for our fellow man; but because charity is a gi from God, we cannot ini ally acquire this virtue by our own ac ons as the mo va ng factor is God himself who inspires. The benefits of charity and compassion are powerful and immediate. You've seen it on the bus, when some-one offers his or her seat to an elderly person: The gen-erous person feels noble, the elderly person beams with gra tude, and even spectators feel like cheering inside just from having witnessed a simple act of kindness. As it turns out, the effects of those experiences aren't just psychological. Those who study the science of do-gooding have discovered that performing (or even just imagining performing) a good deed has major physiolog-ical benefits — for the giver, not just the recipient. Nat-urally, we don't behave in benevolent ways to benefit from our ac ons...but just between us, the side effects are awesome. David R. Hamilton, Ph.D., is a chemist who le a career developing cardiac and cancer drugs to do research that led to studying the health benefits of kindness and hap-piness. Hamilton says that performing a kind act releas-es oxytocin — the same brain chemical that surges when you hold your baby or snuggle a dog — which also temporarily lowers blood pressure. "Kindness is literally good for your heart," explains Hamilton.

Nearly a hundred years ago, aviator Amelia Earhart ob-served, "A single act of kindness throws out roots in all direc ons, and the roots spring up and make new trees." Her inspiring words were borne out by the re-sults of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that showed how a single altruis c kidney do-na on set off a domino effect, resul ng in 10 successive transplants. I never knew Charles “Buddy” Gries, but he was a St. Isaac Jogues “Original” Catechist, Prayer Leader, and extraordinary entertainer. “Buddy” was a minister to the night people of Chicago. He was as devout as he was humorous, a good friend and a great family man. That’s what I’ve heard. At his funeral in 2008, Buddy’s friends learnt that he wanted to do a concert for St. Isaac Jogues. It inspired them to do a memorial concert to benefit the parish. I would think of their gi to the parish as a great act of charity & service. We are truly grateful to Buddy’s wife, Pat, and their family. In the act of reaching out to the parish it is indeed remarkable that the talented per-formers & friends of Buddy Charles could come together in this act of charity. The Gospel reminds us of our neighbor and how best we can reach out se ng the right tone for a humanitarian act to be put in place. A call to act! Why not use what is in our capacity as contributors to build a be er society, reach out? I encourage everyone like the Good Samari-tan of the gospel to join us this Sunday at 3 pm for the 8th Buddy Concert, and show your concern and support for the parish. Sharing the faith with our children is one of our most important privileges and respon-sibilities as parents and as a community of faith! Jesus desires to be the center of our lives and to grow in relationship with us. Your family’s participation in the Religious Education Program is one way we can help you to pass on the faith and deepen that

relationship with Jesus as well as with the Church!

We invite and encourage you to register your children, who are in Grs. K-8 as of this September and who at-tend public school, for our parish’s 2016-2017 Religious Education Program. It is important to have your child(ren) involved in religious education and faith formation each year as no one year teaches everything.

All Families, please note: A young person must receive religious education in a parish RE Program or Catho-lic School the two years immediately prior to receiving sacraments. If you have children who have not yet made their sacraments or a child with special needs, please call to discuss possible options. We would wel-come the opportunity to support your efforts in passing on the Catholic Faith to your children and help them prepare to participate in the sacraments!

Whether you are a returning family or a new family, registration is a simple process involving a few forms. Baptism certificates are needed for each child new to the RE Program unless they were baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. The tuition and book fee, as well as sacrament fee in the appropriate year(s), can be taken care of in payments. If you have a financial concern, please contact Dolores Stanton. All are welcome, and no one is denied religious education because of financial difficulties. ANNUAL MEMORIAL CONCERT TO BENEFIT PARISH

Songs I Never Thought I’d Hear in Church, the 8th Annual Buddy Charles Gries Memorial Concert to benefit St. Isaac Jogues Parish, will be TODAY at 3:00 p.m. in our air conditioned Holy Family Room! Tickets are $20 and will be available at the doors at 2:00 p.m. During the afternoon beer and wine will be available for $2 each and water and pop for $1. It is general seating and the show lasts at least two hours. We are blessed by the generosity of some of Chi-cagoland’s top cabaret performers – Anne and Mark Burnell, Bob Solone, Bob Moreen, Joel Barry, David Harbin, Jeanne Scherkenbach, Ste-ve Heliotes, Paul Marinaro, Ernie Lane and Scott Urban. They are all friends of Buddy Charles Gries, and friends to our parish as well! Also ap-pearing will be Buddy’s wife and our parishioner, Pat Gries, as well as Fr. Luczak! Buddy Gries (Buddy Charles) was a longtime mem-ber of our parish. He was a Confirmation catechist, lector, daily rosary leader as well as a legendary entertainer at such places as Acorn on Oak, Coq d’Or at the Drake and Chambers in Niles. Buddy had hoped to put on a show to benefit the parish not long after Fr. Luczak arrived but due to his wife’s accident and his health issues, it did not happen. Father Luczak mentioned Buddy’s desire to have done a show at his funeral eight years ago. Some of his friends decided to make the show a reality, and this will be the eighth one! This year all proceeds will go to the Roof Replacement Fund. Please support their efforts to help our community while honoring Buddy’s memory and friendship at the same time! Invite your family, friends and neigh-bors for an afternoon of great music and fun!

19th Annual Golf Invitational – July 27

Catholic Charities 19th Annual Golf Invitational will be held on Wednesday, July 27, at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont. The day will kick off with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Compete with over 400 fellow golfers for prizes and bragging rights. Spe-cial features include celebrity contest holes, a women’s tournament, and our popular “Stock Your Cellar” Wine Raffle. Golf will be followed by cocktails, dinner, and silent and live auctions to benefit Catholic Charities Child, Youth and Family Services Programs. Golf starts at $300.
