There were eighteen kings of France named “Louis.” In ap-pearance and personality they were as varied and as colorful as the spectrum. Chronicles recall Louis the Fat, Louis the Wise and Louis the Child. But of the eighteen, none were more notable that Louis IX (whom the Church canonized a “Saint”) and Louis XIV (whom historians gave the title “Great”). They are a remarkable study in con-trast . . . a lesson to the ambitious, a sermon to the high and mighty.

Louis IX was born in 1214. His pious mother, Blanche of Castile, once told him she would rather see him dead than guilty of a single, mortal sin! That Louis took his mother’s stern counsel to heart is dramatically demonstrated by his personal holiness and sincere ded-ication to his subjects. Even the best of monarchs rarely use per-

sonal resources to found hospitals and minister to the sick. Louis IX did precisely that. His devotion to charity compelled him to dine, almost daily, with thirteen of his poorest subjects. During Advent and Lent, he personally provided food and clothing for the destitute of Paris. Like other Catholic kings in the Middle Ages, Louis IX washed the feet of twelve beggars on Maundy Thursday. For most, it was a “show” of piety, but for Louis IX it was a hallmark of real holiness.

Louis IX, like most of his contemporaries, was a collector of holy relics. In 1239, he acquired what was reputed to be the “Crown of Thorns” and a major portion of the “True Cross.” Two years later, work commenced on “La Sainte Chapelle” as a proper setting to enshrine these great mementoes of the Lord’s Passion.

Zealously, Louis IX be-came a crusader to defend the Holy Land and pro-tect Christian pilgrims. In most ways his first cru-sade was a failure. On a second crusade, Louis and his army were overcome by disease. He died in 1270 a “hero” of sanctity and a servant of God.

Almost four hundred years after the death of St. Louis, another sort of man ascended the throne of France. Raised in an atmosphere of corruption and

intrigue, there is no record of what advice Louis XIV’s mother gave him. A look at his self-absorption, might lead us to conclude that the Queen Mother must have been model for the wick-ed queen in Snow White, who spent most of her time in front of a mirror!

In his seventy-two year reign, (1643 - 1715), Louis XIV was known as “The Sun King.” He fancied himself the center of his own “universe.” His extrav-agant life-style, lavish building, and expensive wars were a burden, not a blessing for the people of France. Powerful nobles were drawn to his palace at Versailles. In that artificial universe, the king kept the powerful powerless in trivial amusements and petty rivalries!

Louis saw himself as head of the Church in France. He took on both popes and Protestants in his strug-gle to control the Church. He married twice and kept several mistresses - one of whom, Mme. de Montespan, was probably a witch!

Before Louis XIV died, he was so horrified of God’s judgment and guilt-ridden that he was afraid to sleep. He had hundreds of Masses offered for his tortured soul. When he died, his “universe” died with him.

What remains are symbolic legacies - the life of a saint and the life of a demi-god. The buildings that define the difference between them - Sainte Chapelle and the Palace of Versailles - also pro-vide a moral.

Louis XIV’s celebrated “hall of mirrors” is an apt symbol of his life. Mirrors reflect the world as a stage for self interest. Louis IX’s chapel, with its exquisite stained glass, reveals images alive with supernatural meaning in the brightness of natural light.

Two kings named “Louis” - one remains a window to God’s creation, the other an empty faded mirror. -Fr. Luczak

From The Pastor… In my eight years as pastor, I have written many articles. “Two Kings or Better…”, which appeared in the August 20, 2006 bulletin, is one of my personal favorites. It is a thought provoking study in contrast. -Fr. Luczak

We are in need of empty shoe boxes (no boot boxes please). If you have some that we can have, please leave them in the Holy Family Room the next couple of week-ends or drop them off at the RE Office. We would appreciate shoe boxes that have covers and are in good shape so that toiletries, etc. can be packed inside. Thank you in advance for your help and support which will be bless-ings to the children and to those who will receive the filled shoe boxes. Please pray for the success of this project and for those who will benefit from it.

SUNDAY MASS PROPOSAL As discussed in the 8/3/14 bulletin, we are proposing a 3 Mass schedule on Sundays. Possible options are shown below. The schedules at the bottom of the page present a reasonable alternative to our four Mass schedule. Please note: Saturday evening Mass remains unchanged. As a footnote to this article, please reflect on the overview of Vicariate II Deanery E Mass schedules and those of other surround-ing parishes. Registered family numbers were taken from the Archdiocesan directory. It shows how our neighboring parishes are responding to change. Help us to choose the best alternative. All three options allow for a 2 hour space between Masses to remedy traffic problems and congestion in our parking lots. Please circle Option 1, 2, or 3. Tear along the dotted line and drop your selection into the collection basket or bring it to the rectory by September 1st. We will compile the results and keep you posted. Know that your comments and suggestions are most welcome. You can call the Rectory at 847 967-1060 or send an email to [email protected] at any time. Thank you! Fr. The RCIA is a process of prayer, reflection, study, discussion and service for people who are seeking or desiring to deepen, a relationship with Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES IN SEPTEMBER St. Isaac Jogues Friday Night at the Movies presents “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” on Friday, Sept. 12th, at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. This warm and lovely film will touch your heart and make you feel good all over. It stars Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson and Bill Nighy and is filmed in and around Jaipur, India. Several British older and single-again people who do not know each other, are looking for a place to go where they will enjoy the time away from their routine world, see sights they have not seen before, and be immersed in a culture very dif-ferent from their own. What they experience in Jaipur is a place that astounds the senses and is filled with rich colors and the warm personalities of the people of India. This will be the 16th Friday Night at the Movies. If you’ve not yet come to one, please consider it. If you have, then you know what a pleasurable time it is. It’s all complimentary including the popcorn and beverages. All are welcome! Bring your friends. For more information call Dan Sobieski at 847-965-8072.

PARISH VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES… SACRISTAN – Share your time and attention to detail by helping to clean the church once a month so that people come to a welcoming, prepared place to praise and worship God. We are in particular need of help the second, third and fourth weekends. USHER – If you like to be with people – like to make them feel welcome and want to be helpful to them – this may be your ministry. Ushers come about 20 minutes before Mass begins, greet people, answer questions, distribute items before or after Mass (bulletins, prayer sheets), invite people to bring up the gifts, take up the collection, and assist the procession to Communion. If you would like to talk with someone about any one of these opportunities, please contact the Religious Education office, 847/966-1180 or [email protected], and we will either provide you with information or give your con-tact information to the coordinator of the particular ministry.

PATIENCE Patience is the companion

FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION It has been suggested that First Friday Adoration and Devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus be as follows: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after the 8 a.m. Mass with devotional prayers said at particular times and more time for silent adoration before our Lord. The hope is that more people would come during the day and be happy for this special time with Jesus. However, we need to know if parishioners would support this change by signing up to cover a half hour or hour during First Friday each month. Please pray about this proposal and contact Dee Stanton at 847/966-1180 or [email protected]; talk with Joan Heffernan when you see her at Mass; or sign the sheet in the Holy Family Room today or next week indicating you would be will-ing to pray for an hour before our Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament if held during the day. Thank you! First Friday Adoration and Devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be held on Friday, September 5, 7-10 p.m. in Church. All are encouraged to come spend a special time in prayer before Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament.

CELEBRATION OF SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION Next Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. Mass Father Luczak, with special permission from the Archdiocese, will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation and give First Communion to Joel Aguilar. Please pray for Joel as he prepares to complete his initiation into the Catholic Church and for Joel and his fiancé, Christina, as they prepare for their marriage.
