NCE CENTER

Mental illness and substance abuse treatment havecome a long way showing real signs of improvement. As science has advanced, we’ve learned that mental

illness and addiction disorders are real, common and treatable. We’ve seen improvements in psychiatric medicine, access totreatment and public awareness. But as fast as the world ismoving, there are some areas where progress still seems tocome slowly and grudgingly such as appropriate state andfederal funding, adequate insurance coverage and theaffordability of modern, extremely effective medication.

Despite this, David Lawrence Center has for the last 37 years, proven a stable, sound investment for donors and clientsproviding real and accountable results. The Center measuressuccess through both client impact and fiscal responsibilityand this year we provided accomplishments on both fronts. Interms of our mission, DLC helped more people than any othertime in our history by improving access to care and preventionservices, strengthening community partnerships with theCounty and the school system and expanding needed programsfor children. In terms of financial performance, despite manychallenges including a critical nursing shortage, competitive

salary shortfall, increased employee health and liabilityinsurance costs, overcrowding on the crisis stabilization unitand skyrocketing expenses in unfunded, psychotropicmedications, the Center successfully managed a $20 millionoperating budget.

In order to achieve these results, we rely on staff ingenuity, vision setting board leadership and the generosity of ourdonors to attain remarkable outcomes for the families whoturn to us for help and hope. Some of the real people whoreceived the help they needed from David Lawrence Centershare their story of triumph in this annual report. They are thereal heroes who found the courage not only to ask for help, butalso to speak openly about their experiences.

Rooted deep in our mission, David Lawrence Center believeseach and every one of our lives should hold the promise ofgrowth and fulfillment. It is only through the support of ourdonors, volunteers, Board of Directors and hardworking staffthat we have been able to fulfill this mission. On behalf of thethousands of families and individuals who have experiencedreal success and meaningful transitions through our work,we thank you.

Darrin had a right to be angry. At six, he wasremoved from his mother's home due to herdrug problem and while in alternative custody,

he was molested. After his mother overcame herproblems and regained custody, they moved toImmokalee for work. Darrin started a new schooland lived on a farm isolated fromother children.>>>====>>>>>>>>>>>

He argued with his sister, was constantlygetting into fights at school and waslashing out at teachers. His motherVeronica says, “He was mad at me forwhat happened and wasn't dealing withit. I was afraid if I didn't do somethinghe was going to end up in jail.”

In difficult cases like Darrin's, ittakes a team approach and aninvestment in the entire family todevelop a comprehensive treatmentplan that will help the child overcomehis problems. That is the philosophybehind David Lawrence Center'sChildren's Community Services. Darrin'splan included a team of influential peopleand a variety of community-basedprograms that provided the real resultshe needed to succeed.

For nearly a year, Darrin and Veronicaworked closely with a case managerand therapist to develop his socializationskills in programs like little league andDLC's EXCEL Summer Camp program.

Being a teenager isn't easy. During adolescence, children gain more independence while beingfaced with increased social pressures such

as sexual activity, drug use, drinking, breaking rulesand, in some cases, breaking the law. As teenstest authority and boundaries, they sometimeshave to learn the hard way aboutnegative consequences.

Ashley was a smart, hardworking, typical 17 year old junior at NaplesHigh School who had never gotteninto trouble before. One day sheand a friend decided to be “brave”and stole makeup at a local retailer. She says in an ashamed voice, “Weknew there was a chance we wouldget caught and we knew weshouldn't have done it, but we justdid it. It was really stupid.” Ashleywas charged with petty theft andhad to appear in court with herdisappointed parents. She wasashamed, fearful of being judgedby other people and didn't knowhow the charge would affect herability to get a job in the future.

Through the Court's AlternativeSanctions program, Ashley wasgiven the opportunity to completeDavid Lawrence Center's MakingPositive Choices prevention programin exchange for having the chargepermanently on her record. MakingPositive Choices is one of several

prevention programs the Center offers adolescents andmiddle school-aged children to educate them oncommon problems kids are faced with in today's society. These classes provide teens with the tools they needto deal with those problems more appropriately.

During the six week psycho-educationalgroup, Ashley learned about acceptingresponsibility, proper decision making, evaluating priorities, personal control, peer pressure, self esteem, and valuesand morals. She reflects, "We learnedother ways to get out of bad situationsother than just saying no. I've alreadyused those skills today when other kidshave invited me to do something thatI knew I shouldn't be doing.”

Today, Ashley is more aware of thefriends she hangs out with and spendstime evaluating decisions before shemakes them. As she heads into hersenior year, she is beginning to planfor the future. She says, “I’ve beenbaby sitting for several years andreally enjoy children so I'm thinkingabout going to college to become akindergarten teacher.”

Providing prevention education to the youth in our community is a critical step in avoiding more serious mental healthand substance problems in the future.DLC is invested in the success of CollierCounty children and we continue toexpand available prevention programs.

In his weekly therapy, he talked openly about hisproblems rather than keeping them bottled upinside. With their help, he learned how to deal withhis anger appropriately so it didn't affect his gradesor his ability to make friends. Darrin proudly sharesa tool he learned, “Now when kids pick on me,

I just avoid them and walk away.”. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Keenly aware of his newfoundsuccess, Darrin boasts, “I madelots of new friends in baseball. Wetied for first place and I got a trophy. In school, math and reading are myfavorite subjects and my gradesare all Os and Ss.”

DLC also helped Veronica by linkingher with local Alcoholics andNarcotics Anonymous meetings, job placement services, schoolresource information and a networkof support designed to make lifeeasier for their entire family.

She shares, “DLC recognized thatI needed support to help me copewith all of this emotionally. As amother, you have to have someonewith experience who knows howto deal with these situations. Itdoesn't come naturally. Theygive me advice that helps medeal with problems that come upwith Darrin.”

After weathering a traumatic divorce, Lorrainebecame severely depressed and despondent. Shewent from a happily married, successful saleswoman

to being unemployed, without a penny to her name.Feeling demoralized and emotionally fragile, she wasforced to sell her belongings to try and keep up with therent. Ultimately, it was not enough and the once proud, hard working woman found herself at ahomeless shelter fearful of the unknown.

Since 1999, David Lawrence Center'sProject for Assistance in Transitionfrom Homelessness (PATH) program hasbeen helping homeless individualsget the services they need to liveindependently. Case management, social rehabilitation, affordable housingand supported employment are offeredthrough the PATH program to homelessindividuals with a persistent mentalillness. Each service provides a criticalcomponent to ensuring the client's success.

Things started looking up for Lorrainewhen PATH connected her with DLC’spsychiatric services and she wasdiagnosed and treated for majordepression with psychotic tendencies. She was assigned a case manager wholinked her to a host of DLC’s social andeconomic services. She moved intoDLC’s affordable housing program andreceived help with daily living skillssuch as developing a personal budget. It wasn't long before she showed signsof improvement and was able to livemore autonomously.

“Being faced with a felony was a very big deal for meas a young, successful salesman trying to get backinto the business world. Drug Court gave me hope. Itgave me my life back,” Bob shares. He attributes muchof his success to being required to get a sponsor andbeing accountable for working the 12 steps ofAlcoholics Anonymous (AA). In group, he shared how

each step was changing his life andbenefited from hearing how sobrietywas working for others.

The education Bob received helpedhim learn more about himself and hisdisease. He says, “I had to be honestwith myself about what I had done inthe last 21 years. That was hard andmy heart was exposed. With prayer, mysponsor and my clinician, I was able totalk about my emotions.”

Meeting regularly with his probationofficer and the judge, served as aconstant reminder of the choices hehad – to either keep using and becomea career criminal or stay sober andwork his way out of the legal system.

Today, Bob sees getting his recordexpunged as a reward for maintaininghis sobriety and doing what he neededto do to get his life back in order. He nowsponsors other people in the Drug Courtprogram and enjoys helping others inrecovery find real success.

In just one year, she became employed part-timewith DLC as a Rehabilitation Specialist. Knownaffectionately as the House Mom, she helps otherclients in the housing program achieve the samesuccess she has found. Lorraine shares with newfound confidence, “I take a lot of pride in the houseand take very good care of it. Our neighbor told me

this is the best she's ever seen theplace look.” She explains, “I showthe others how to do their laundryand keep their rooms clean. I helpthem prepare meals and remindthem of their medications. It hasreally helped my recovery to havethis kind of responsibility.”

David Lawrence Center’s financialassistance programs help Lorrainebudget her limited resources.Through our sliding fee scale, shenow pays $37 a month in rent and$2 per doctor’s visit. Because shedoesn’t qualify for Medicaid, shestill struggles to afford her $275 amonth medication prescription, buthas the confidence, knowledge andsupport system to figure out how tomake ends meet.

Lorraine says, “David LawrenceCenter is my family now. EveryoneI've worked with over the last twoyears has helped me feel moreindependent and secure. I know I'vecome a long way.”

The combination of treatment,

working with a sponsor and

judicial supervision motivated

Bob to stay sober and work his

way out of the legal system and

into a bright future.

Diversionary Treatment

People with substance abuse problems hit theirbottom in many different ways, some morethan once. For Bob, it came seven years after

the love of his life divorced him and he lost hismultimillion dollar cellular company, his home andhis cars. Although extremely successful in a newjob, Bob’s recent self-described “partying” causedhim to reach his bottom when hegot two DUIs and a felony drugarrest in one year. =============

Bob was scared – scared to lose hisjob, scared of disappointing hisfamily and scared of jail. He knewhe needed help for his addictionsand was ready to begin a new life.

David Lawrence Center’s DrugCourt Program diverts offenders withsubstance abuse and drug relatedcriminal activity from overcrowded, taxed jails by offering them anopportunity to deal with theirdependence rather than facepunitive alternatives.

This more effective form of treatmentcombines a year’s worth ofmandatory drug testing, grouptherapy, case management, regularparticipation at Alcoholics orNarcotics Anonymous meetings, and routine probationary and judicialreviews. For Bob, Drug Court washis opportunity for a secondchance and a new beginning.

After retiring, we really wanted to be partof a town and make a difference.

Shortly after moving to Naples, I got involved with David Lawrence Center

because there was a real need and no mental health facility. We were drawn

to the cause because we knew what a devastating effect substance abuse and

mental illness could have on a family. We find it very satisfying to contribute

to the Center so they can meet the needs of our growing community.”

Since first becoming involved with Encore 18 years ago, I’ve seen

the tremendous expansion the Center has achieved through the support

of the community. They’ve been able to develop new programs and build new

locations so they can better reach the people in need. Every time I volunteer, it

makes me feel good to know that the money from each sale helps DLC.

It’s fun to support them by volunteering, consigning and shopping at Encore.”

“ T he Center is a very special place. Whencompared to other medical offices I have

worked, I know how much more supportand care our clients need from us – fromboth a treatment and financial perspective. You don’t have to have a lot of money todonate, because every dollar helps ourclients in some way. I believe in giving fromyour heart and I feel privileged to be able tohelp in any way I can.”
