Jeftha agreed with America and said that the upgrading of the local police station was a priority for him as well. “There have been too many prom- ises in the past, but the time for those promises are past and I am more intent than ever to make this new station a reality in the near fu- ture,” he said. “From my side I have already identified some suitable sites in the area where a new station can be built, and there is also space next to the existing station that I have pointed out that can be used. “In fact application for the ground next to the station was al- ready made last year, now we just need action from relevant depart- ments involved in government to make the upgrading a reality.” America concluded by calling on authorities to take note of future ex- pansion in the area. “Belhar and the surrounding are- as are still growing,” he said. “Every time we hear about pro- posed new developments that are planned in the area, but nobody considers the safety of the commu- nity when they do these proposals. “You just have to look at the growth over the past few years and the problems that have increased for police with no proper facilities. Let’s hope that the end of our long battle is in sight,” he concluded. At the forefront in the ongoing bat- tle for a new police station in Bel- har is, from left, subcouncil chair- person Desmond Jeftha and Pat America, chair of the local CPF, seen here in front of the land pro- posed for upgrading of the Belhar Police Station. An ongoing battle for a better po-lice station in the area that startedin 2008 may eventually be coming areality with authorities reacting toan article that appeared in ournewspaper earlier this year (“Newcop shop wanted” - Tygerburger 15February).

Pat America, the chairperson ofthe Community Police Forum, is ex-cited that there may finally be somepositive action in regard to the im-provement to local police facilities,

SAPS have their sights set on stolengoods in the community.

Last week in Delft police embarked on anoperation among second-hand dealers tocurb the flow of stolen goods in circulationand to reduce the availability of suspectedstolen goods.

A large contingent of uniformed person-nel, detectives, City of Cape Town’s metropolice and law enforcement took part in theoperation.

Before sending them out on the operationstation commander Brig Hendrik Jansen in-spected the parade and stressed the impor-tance of exercises like this in the communi-ty.

He stressed that the availability and flowof second-hand goods is a serious concernfor him and his office and warned dealersand members of the public to refrain frombuying or selling stolen property.

“It is a criminal offence and that they willbe prosecuted,” he said.

“The flow of stolen goods is exacerbatedby the public’s perception that there is no-thing wrong with buying stolen items forcheap, but we want to stress that it is alsoan offence, and we will prosecute to the ful-lest.”

During the operation five suspects werecharged for illegally selling second-handgoods and a 37-year-old arrested for being inpossession of suspected stolen property –100kg of wire cables and street light fittings, with a street value of about R5 000.

Jansen concluded that the operation wasa success and that further operations areplanned in the near future.

“I will make it my mission to ensure thatevery contribution, every 67 minutes spon-sored by our fellow South African compatri-ots, will make a permanent impact on all ofthe 430 learners currently at our school.”

Adams has already embarked on a turna-round initiative since his appointment in2008. He and his team of educators realisewhat a critical role education plays in break-ing the cycle of poverty in the Uitsig commu-nity.

Willmot Primary has prepared a list of ac-tivities aligned with the need and challengesthe school is facing. For more informationcall the school on 021 933 0101 during schoolhours, or Andrew Cardoza on 083 248 7916.

The traffic by-law which makes provi-sion for the confiscation of cellphonesthat are being used while driving, seemsto have fallen on deaf ears as far as citydrivers are concerned.

This conclusion is drawn after 16 cell-phones were confiscated on Thursday 5 Ju-ly, as reported by the City of Cape Town.

The cellphones were confiscated duringpeak hours and were placed in soft, impact-resistant boxes.

Video recordings and spotters were usedto identify the offending vehicles, and thisinformation was then communicated to thetraffic officers so that offending drivers

could be addressed.Receipts were issued to offending drivers

stating that their cellphones could be col-lected between Monday and Friday thisweek at the Gallows Hill traffic departmentin Green Point.

The law stipulates that confiscatedphones can be collected 24 hours after beingconfiscated. The National Road Traffic Acturges motorists to pull off at the side of theroad or to utilise a hands-free kit.

“Using a cellphone whilst driving nega-tively affects the ability, awareness, visionand reaction time of drivers, thereby in-creasing thepotential for a serious accident.

“Distracted drivers pose a grave dangerto other road users,” reported the City ofCape Town.

CARINA ROUX

We all sometimes need a shoulder to leanon. Someone with a receptive ear whocan take your hand when your view be-comes emotionally obscured. Especiallyif you encounter an obstacle like the bigC on life’s journey.

A “dose of Nick when needed” was notamong the list of doctors’ prescriptions re-cently diagnosed cancer patient John Smithreceived.

His wife Tracey says they didn’t knowhow to cope with the news. “Having no fami-ly members to speak to, I didn’t know wheth-er I was saying the right things when he gotdepressed. I was praying about it, and say-ing to the Lord please help me, that He couldsend someone to help John with the depres-sion.”

Father of three, Nick van Rensburg wasdiagnosed with colon cancer in 2009. Al-ready in an advanced stage it subsequentlyspread to his liver. After numerous opera-tions he is currently in remission, but stillon preventative chemo-tablets.

In response to an SMS request from LindaGreeff, co-founder of People Living WithCancer (PLWC), Nick contacted John whowas struggling to come to terms with his di-agnosis of colorectal cancer. “I have livedwith a similar diagnosis for three yearsnow, I can give that type of support. I am aChristian, and prayed about what Godwould want me to do with my life, and thisto me was an answer.”

“Cancer unifies people,” says Linda, asthe friendship between Irishman MartinConnoly (68) and Thabo Rini (33) from Mfu-leni, proves.

Martin, who recently heard that he is inremission from rectal cancer was elatedwhen asked to be a cancer buddy. “If I couldbe there for anyone that’s going through thesame sort of trauma that I went throughwhen first diagnosed and spare them a littlebit of that, then I felt that I was doing some-thing worthwhile.”

Thabo had the same sort of questions heonce had – what’s going to happen, how’s itgoing to affect me, what can I do to help?Martin’s been able to assist Thabo with thepractical side of things.

The challenge with Thabo was that he wasin such a poor state in the beginning. “I hadto try and keep pulling myself away fromfeeling pity for him, and just give him themoral support, give him positive messagesall the time and just be there for him.”

PLWC, one of the beneficiaries of thisyear’s ’Cause we Can! concert, originatedout of a cancer survivors’ “celebration oflife” event in 2000. Linda, who survivedovarian cancer heard others expressing theneed to give something back.

One of them was co-founder Carl Lieben-berg who recalled how desperate he was tofind someone who had gone through thesame experience when he was diagnosedwith lymphoma.

“We are still quite a small organisation, but a powerful one as we are survivor-driv-en,” says Linda.

“We did not have a choice about gettingcancer, but now that we are part of this club,we are trying to make the best of it.”

Ek was redelik langer asdie anders spelers. Toe ek o.11 was, het hullemy flank toe geskuif vir een oefening. Ek hetgoed gedoen daar en van toe af in daardie posi-sie gespeel,” sê hy.

Liebenberg is ná laerskool Worcester toewaarhybyHTSDrostdyop skoolwas. “Ekwougraag die koshuislewe ervaar en tegniese vak-ke neem omdat ek graag eendag ’n ingenieurwou word.”

Hy onthou ook dat hy nie eers die o.16-GrantKhomo-spanvirdieBolandkonhaalnie.Dingehet in 2009 begin gebeur toe hy in graad 11 was.

Ek stu-deer tans ingenieurswese by Tuks.

Roses United from Free State arethe 2012 Vodacom League champi-ons after defeating Milano Unitedfrom the Western Cape 4-2 on pen-alties in a tense final at the SeshegoStadium in Polokwane on Sunday.

The match finished goalless af-ter 90 minutes.

With both sides already havingclinched automatic promotion tothe National First Division by vir-tue of winning their respectivegroups, the final was always goingto be a closely contested affair and, notwithstanding supreme effortfrom both teams, neither was ableto find a way to break the deadlock.

It took two excellent saves fromgoalkeeper and Player of the Tour-nament, William Mothokoa to de-nyShaunDaniels andShamiel Phi-lander in the shootout to ensurethe trophy will reside in Bloemfon-tein for the next 12 months, whileMilano United can return to CapeTown with their heads high to planfor life in the National First Divi-sion next season.

Winning coach, former BafanaBafana international, John Talewas very proud of his team.

“I cannot properly express howproud I am of my boys. At the be-ginning of the season, we drafted athree-year plan for promotion andwe have achieved it.”

Safa president Kirsten Nematan-dani paid tribute to Vodacom’s rolein establishing the league as a vitalcomponent within the structuresof South Africa football.
