print out the PDF.Be sure to printactual size. Do notscale the pattern.

2. Cut out eachpiece and tapetogether, matchingthe letters where

indicated. You willhave one wedgeand one octagon.

3. Cut eightwedges out of themain fabric. Ifusing two main fab-rics like we did, cutfour of each.

4. Cut eightwedges out of inter-facing.

5. Cut twooctagons from mainfabric. (Or you canuse a contrastingfabric like we did.)

6. Cut twooctagons frominterfacing.

7. Iron the inter-facing to the wrongside of the mainfabric.

8. Sew togetherfour of the wedges,with right sidestogether, creatinghalf of the pouf.Press the seamswith an iron.Repeat with theother four. Itshould look like twohalves of a beachball.

9. Turn one halfright side out andfit inside the otherhalf so the rightsides are togetherand the unsewnedges are together.Pin the edgestogether, leavingan open space atthe top where thepoints meet. Sewtogether with thesewing machine.Press the seamswith an iron.

10. Turn the poufright side out andstuff with fabricscraps and fiberfill.It helps to useheavier scraps at

the bottom so thepouf has some sta-bility. You’ll want itto be very dense!

11. Once the poufis full, stitch thetop closed with aneedle and thread.It doesn’t have tolook great, becauseyou’ll cover it upwith the octagontop.

12. Applique theelephant onto thetop octagon. We didit with the sewingmachine, but youcan do it by handwith a decorativestitch, if you like.

13. Press thesides of bothoctagons under at {inch with an iron.Pin in place on thetop and bottom ofthe pouf and hand-stitch. You can usea decorative stitchlike a runningstitch or a zig-zagstitch, or you canuse something sim-ple like a pillowstitch, like we did.

Is it pos-sible for you toremind all yourreaders across thecountry about thisimportant issue? Ifeel saving wateris something thateveryone can dono matter whereyou live.

A: As you men-tioned, I recentlyreturned from awater conservationmedia tour inCalifornia, and Ilearned some thingsas well. Forinstance, most reser-voirs in Californiaare at low levels.Also, snow levels in2014 were wellbelow normal levelsand not surprisingly,wildfire activity isup. I agree with youthat saving water iseverybody’s job, so

here is my “savingwater is as easy asone, two, three” mes-sage:

1. Change the aer-ators in all yourfaucets to water-sav-ing aerators that useonly 1.5 gallons perminute.

2. Install high-effi-ciency shower headsthat use only 2 gal-lons per minute orless. My favoritenew feature for ahand shower iscalled an eco-boostfeature. These handshowers can useonly 1.5 gallons perminute. A press of abutton can supply a2 gallons per minuterinse, and when thebutton is released,the flow returns tothe normal water-saving rate.

3. Replace yourolder, water-guzzlingtoilet that may useover 2.5 gallons perflush with a newhigh-efficiency toiletthat uses only 1.28gallons per flush.New quality high-efficiency toiletshave beenredesigned to flushwith power. So, youshould not have todouble flush to doyour civic duty andsave water.

We like to see color andlife everywhere in the gar-den, which often leads us toplant in the area beneathour trees.

If you choose and plantcarefully, a tree and a gar-den can happily co-exist,said Sharon Yiesla, PlantClinic assistant at TheMorton Arboretum in Lisle,Ill. After all, most trees growamong other plants innature. But it’s also easy todo harm to a tree by planti-ng in its root zone, and ifyou choose the wrong plants,they will have a hard timesurviving.

“The worst thing you cando is plant annuals of anykind,” Yiesla said. You mightlike the look of a ring ofbegonias or impatiens at the

base of a tree, but everytime you plant them, youare slicing the roots the treeneeds to collect water andnutrients.

Instead, choose long-livedperennials or groundcovers.Plant them once _ ideallywhen the tree is young andhas not yet spread its rootsvery far _ and then let thetree and the carpet of plantsbeneath it settle in to eachother’s company over yearsor decades.

Yiesla said it’s best toplant small plants _ perhapsthe size that comes in 4-inchpots rather than gallon con-tainers. That way, you candig a smaller hole and dam-age fewer roots. It may takea little longer for thegroundcover to fill in or forthe perennials to get largeenough to bloom, but thetree will thank you.

Of course, anything you

plant beneath the leafycanopy of a tree must besuited to shade. It’s also sur-prisingly dry under there,because the canopy shedsrain like an umbrella.Plants beneath a tree willget much less rain than therest of your garden.

Still, there are a numberof plants that can do well indry shade. Yiesla suggestsbishop’s hat (Epimedium),wild ginger (Asarumcanadense), Siberian bugloss(Brunnera macrophylla) andhostas. Ferns and sweetwoodruff (Galium odoratum)also can do well under atree, she said, if you arewilling to do some watering.

Be careful about plantingrapidly spreading ground-covers such as dead nettle(Lamium) or English ivy(Hedera helix), Yiesla said.They can spread so quicklythey out-compete other

plants. Ivy can climb trees,Yiesla says, so it needs to bepruned to prevent it fromgrowing onto the branchesand covering leaves.

Another option is to plantnative woodland wildflow-ers, such as toothwort(Cardamine concatenata),Virginia bluebells(Mertensia virginica), whitetrout lily (Erythroniumalbidium), May apple(Podophyllum peltatum) andsharp-lobed hepatica(Hepatica acutiloba). Theseplants evolved to bloomearly in spring, when thetrees’ leaves are still furledand more sunlight can reachthe ground. After blooming,when the leaves haveopened and the shade deep-ens, they will go dormant.Some, such as bloodroot(Sanguinaria canadensis),will keep their foliage allseason, but others will dis-

appear entirely until nextspring. You can even plantthese wildflowers amonghostas or ferns that will fillin later, after the wildflow-ers have tucked themselvesaway.

One mistake many gar-deners make, Yiesla said, isto create a raised bed orplanter box around a tree.That can harm the tree twoways: by piling up soil sodeep that air can’t reach theroots, and by trapping mois-ture against the bark to har-bor insects or cause rot.

“I’d rather see peopleplant right into the ground,”she said.

Another option is to plantshade-tolerant annuals orperennials in large pots andset several of them beneatha tree. They will bring somecolor to the shade withoutsmothering or damaging thetree’s roots.

Thishas been especiallytrue in vegetablegardens and orna-mental beds wherethe exposed soil hasbeen too wet to cul-tivate. The callsand damaged plantsamples cominginto the Extensionoffice right nowserve as a somberreminder for theneed to take carewith weed controlproducts, especiallythose designed tocontrol broad leafweeds.

The vast majorityof broadleaf weedcontrol productscontain 2,4-D(Dimethylaminesalt of 2,4-D-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) or a closelyrelated chemical.This active ingredi-ent is found in hun-dreds of differentproducts and cancome in liquid orgranular form.When used proper-ly in accordancewith the labelinstructions, thisproduct does agreat job at control-ling most broadleafweeds. The badnews is it is equallyas effective atkilling many of ourdesirable plants aswell with tomatoes,potatoes, andgrapes being someof the most sensi-tive.

“No problem”,you may say, “I’ll

just be careful notto spray theseplants”. If only itwere that easy.This class of chemi-cal moves very eas-ily with the wind,traveling much far-ther than youmight imagine. Tomake matters a bitworse, the liquidform of the productdoes not even haveto make the tripwith the wind.When conditionsare right (highertemperatures andyoung, activelygrowing plants area big part of this),even the vaporfrom the productcan be enough tocause a problem.

Scientists use theterm epinasty todescribe the growthof the affectedplant. Damage ischaracterized bystretching, twist-ing, and generalmalformation of theleaves and stems.Sometimes, theplants can recoverand outgrow this,but oftentimes theydo not. It can helpto prune off thedamaged portionssince once the plantpart is deformed, itis never going toregain its full func-tion.

The take homemessage is oneyou’ve heard oftenif you are a regularreader. Part of therole of the productlabel is to warn youof issues like this,but it is up to theuser to read andfollow the instruc-tions.

A homeowner whoremodels can be heldfinancially responsi-ble if a worker getshurt, even if the con-tractor has a work-ers compensationinsurance policy.

DEAR MR.MYERS: You sug-gested that ahomeowner whowas planning a bigremodeling pro-ject might need toincrease his liabili-ty insurance incase the generalcontractor, or oneof the subcontrac-tors, gets hurtwhile working onthe property. Thegeneral contractorwe’ve hired toremodel our ownhome has his ownworkers compen-sation insurance.Wouldn’t his poli-cy cover any on-the-job injuries toworkers?

ANSWER: It’srisky for homeown-ers to assume that acontractor’s workerscompensation policywill protect thehomeowner fromfinancial responsibil-ity if someone isinjured during aremodel.

Workers comppays for medical andrehabilitationexpenses, and some-times lost wages, if aworker suffers anon-the-job injury.Many contractorsdon’t carry “workerscomp” coverage atall, so an injuredworker can often suethe homeowner ifthe contractor does-n’t have adequateinsurance.

Even if a contrac-tor claims to havegood coverage, thehomeowner shouldask for a copy of thepolicy and then con-tact the insurer tocheck that it’s up-to-date. It’s also impor-tant to realize thatthe policy probablyonly covers the con-tractor’s full-timeemployees -- whichmeans part-timesubcontractors whomight be involved inthe project can stillsue the propertyowner if they don’thave workers compcoverage of theirown.

Many workerscomp insurers arealso getting tougheron paying claims.For example, aninsurance companytoday might stillquickly pay for aworker who falls offthe roof and breaks aleg -- but might denythe claim and sug-gest the worker file aclaim against the

homeowner if theinjury was causedafter tripping over askateboard that theowner’s child care-lessly left on thefront sidewalk.

Considering allthese issues, I willgive you the sameadvice that I provid-ed the reader:Contact your owninsurer before, notafter, your remodel-ing job begins.

* * *DEAR MR.

MYERS: I own aduplex, and I rent-ed one of the unitsto a young couplewho wrote their$2,000 securitydeposit to me outof their jointaccount. The cou-ple recently splitup and moved out.The man wantsme to send the$2,000 refunddirectly to him athis new address,but the womanwants me to sendthe $2,000 to her.

Should I just send$1,000 to him andthe other $1,000 toher?

ANSWER:Sending each one acheck for $1,000might seem like agood idea, but it real-ly isn’t, because eachperson apparentlyfeels entitled to thefull $2,000. If youarbitrarily decide tomail a $1,000 checkto the man andanother $1,000 checkto the woman, you’drisk being draggedinto their squabbleand might even windup in court.

A better alterna-tive would be towrite a $2,000 check,but make it payableto both of them. Bothof their signatureswould be required tocash it, which wouldforce them to workout some sort ofarrangement ontheir own while alsohelping to keep youout of their personalfinancial affairs.

Arrange a timewhen you can meetwith them togetherso you can presentthe check after eachone signs a receiptstating that the fulldeposit has beenreturned.

* * *DEAR MR.

MYERS: I lost acourt decision in2010 but did notpay the judgmentimmediately, sothe woman whosued me filed alien against myhome in 2011. Ipaid her the fullamount last sum-mer, and sheremoved the lien,but it still appearson my creditreport. The creditbureau won’t takeit off, which ishurting my creditscore and makingit more difficult to

refinance mymortgage. Whatcan I do?

ANSWER: Yourletter states that thelien was recorded in2011, after youfailed to promptlypay a court-ordereddebt. Even thoughyou finally paid itlast year, the lienitself will remain onyour credit reportfor seven years fromthe date it was filed.

Because the lienwas a bona fidedebt, the creditbureau was correctin refusing to eraseit from your record.However, yourreport should alsoinclude a notationthat the lien wasreleased after thedebt was paid infull last summer.

Take another lookat your report to seeif it includes such a

notation. If it does-n’t, contact thebureau again to seehow the informationcan be updated. I’msure the bureau willbe happy to help,provided that youcan supply a copy ofthe lien release orother basic docu-mentation thatproves that thepast-due debt hasnow been paid.

The bottom linehere is that the lienwill stay on yourrecord until 2018,which will hurtyour overall creditscore. You’re theonly person whocan limit the dam-age (and get a bet-ter refinancingdeal) by makingsure that your cred-it report alsoincludes a note thatsays the judgmentlien has been

Dear Sherry: It’snot uncommon forpainters to request adown payment of 20to 30 percent of ajob’s total cost. Localor state regulations

may limit theamount allowed for adown payment, socheck the rulesbefore starting con-tract work.

Typically, afteryou’ve made thedown payment, youwon’t pay again untilthe job is done.However, a projectthat is large in scope– either because ofthe area to be paint-ed or the amount ofprep work required –may feature sched-uled payments alongthe way. If that’s thecase, plan to hold

back at least 10 per-cent until the workis completed to yoursatisfaction. Avoidany painting con-tractor who requiresfull payment upfront.

All payment termsshould be fullydetailed in a writtencontract. There aretwo types of homeproject contracts:fixed-price, whichspells out the exactcost, including mate-rials and labor, andtime-and-materials,which bills you bythe hour for labor

and materials.Keep in mind that

a fixed-price contractis the most common– and generally mostpreferred – type ofhome-remodelingcontract. In fact,time-and-materialscontracts for homeprojects are not legalin California.

Whichever kind ofcontract youencounter, carefullyread through thedetails and comparemultiple bids side byside. Some painterswill bid separatelyfor paint and mate-

rials, while othersinclude those in theoverall price. Makesure you’re compar-ing apples to apples,as far as type ofpaint and materialsto be used.

Painters pricetheir jobs one of twoways: by squarefootage or theamount of time thejob takes. New con-struction often war-rants a price bysquare footage

because there arefewer variables – nofurniture to moveand the walls thatdon’t require repairs.If the home is occu-pied, the price willmost likely be deter-mined by the timeestimated to com-plete the work.

On average,painters charge from$250 to $400 topaint a typical 15-foot-by-12-foot bed-room.

When hiring, con-sider painters whohave good reviewson a trusted site andwho can show proofof appropriate licens-ing, insurance andbonding. Considerthe added step ofcontacting recent ref-erences. Ask paint-ing contractors aboutpost-job services,such as what hap-pens if you discoveran area that waspainted poorly.

Have you ever fallenfor a light fixture orrange hood but thoughtyou couldn’t have it inyour kitchen because itwasn’t the same metalfinish as everythingelse?

Rejoice, the finishesdon’t have to match.Some of the most spec-tacular kitchens todayare a mix of metal fin-ishes, wood tones andpainted cabinetry.

There was a timewhen we thoughtstainless steel appli-ances had to set thetone for all the metalfinishes in the kitchen.Not true. DesignerMichelle Workmanproves that a well-planned design canincorporate just aboutany color or type ofmetal finish. In one of

her designs, the stoveanchors the theme. Ithas a black porcelainbody, brass controlsand stainless steeltrim.

The shade of gray forthe cabinets is key. It’sa warm gray withbrown, not blue, under-tones. The cooper cook-ware collection sus-pended from a stain-less steel bar brings awarm glow that workswith the brass hard-ware.

Workman completedthe look by adding agold-framed mirrorover the kitchen writ-ing desk. The black barstools and desk chairbring the commandinghue of the range fullcircle.

Getting colors towork together is allabout how one toneenhances another.Designers proved thatpoint in decorating a

show house for theJunior League of HighPoint and TraditionalHome magazine.

The kitchen of theshow house is stun-ning. Black paintedcabinets and woodworkare sitting pretty on anatural wood-tonefloor. White subwaytiles are classic andmake the perfect back-drop for black. Whitecountertops create atransition for the sub-way tiles.

The appliances arestainless steel, but thecabinet hardware isgold. The light fixturesare a deeper brasstone. The look worksbecause it is rich incolor, drawing from theblack, brown and warmbrass hardware.

The only introduc-tion of pattern is in theblack-and-white win-dow treatment and thekitchen stools. Wood-

tone stools bring thewarm, natural tone upoff the floor and intothe landscape of theroom.

Appliances, for themost part, need to bestainless steel. If youdon’t want metal, con-sider wooden frontsthat match your cabi-netry. Stainless steelsinks for serious cooksare durable and somuch easier to keepclean.

Ranges have becomestatement pieces. Ifyou are devoted to theWolf brand, then youwant to keep those redknobs front and center.

Thermador offerschoices of knobs for itsprofessional-qualityranges. If you are con-sidering an OfficineGullo cooking machine,color is everything. TheItalian company’s mis-sion is to make usrethink the traditional

kitchen.What doesn’t work?

Mixing warm and coldtones. Understand themood of the room asyou start to pulltogether all the ele-ments.

If you are creating achic, contemporarykitchen and want towork with gray orwhite, make them coolcolors with blue orblack undertones. Useshiny metals instead ofbrushed or patinatones.

Going more traditionor transitional? Thinkwarm whites, creams,blacks, wood tones andbrowns. Satin, polishednickel, soft brass fin-ishes and warm touch-es of copper can becomplementary.

Lighting fixturesshould be outstanding.Don’t pass up some-thing you love becauseit’s silver, copper or

gold. It all can worktogether.

Oh, and while I’mthinking about it, youcan wear that goldbracelet with the silverone. That works, too.
