Sharing the Changeless Christ in a Changing World!

“Let your gentleness be evident

to all. The Lord is near. Do not

be anxious about anything, but

in every situation, by prayer

and petition, with thanksgiving,

present your requests to God.

And the peace of God, which

transcends all understanding,

will guard your hearts and

your minds in Christ Jesus.”

– Philippians 4:5-7

I think my favorite word so

far this year might be

“vexed.” Irritated, annoyed,

frustrated, displeased. There

are no perfect synonyms; it

means exactly what it sounds

like. I use it as a cover-all

term to describe most of what

I do not wish to become: one

who takes himself too

seriously. In the ninth grade,

my science teacher was

vexed. One of my classmates

antagonized him to the point

of throwing a graduated

cylinder across the room and,

upon shattering a piece of

Wayzata High School

property on the wall, said to

the class, “Now look what

you’ve done!” I get secret,

weird, comedic pleasure out

of situations like this, and out

of watching vexed people on

the bus, in the city, or in our

church. They scurry around

like reptiles with bloodshot

eyes and faces that look as

though someone has always

just awoken them from a

deep sleep using a fog horn.

Consistently vexed people

are like the best Clint

Eastwood characters: it’s not

what they’re doing, but what

they look like they are about

to do.

But sadly, I too get vexed.

For all of my easygoing

shuffle and tomfoolery, I am

at times no better than

the brooding, cranky

businessman sitting

next to me on the

Metro Transit. Let me

be clear and serious,

in case this is any

secret: I want to be on

staff at Redeemer for

many years. I love this

church and I want to

serve my Lord here, in

any way that I possibly

can. About a month

ago, I found myself

suddenly tossed in the

middle of a ridiculous

arena of church

politics. There’s no

need to write about it

here. I became bitter, I

felt anxious. I was

vexed for at least a

week.

Then, in a matter of hours,

my heart was changed

completely. One evening, I

explained everything that

had taken place to my fiancé.

I confessed to her that I

honestly didn’t know what to

do. She listened for awhile,

and then shared a gem from

the Old Testament with me:

“The Lord will fight for you; (Reflections continued on page 6)

THANKING GOD “WITH

ONE HEART!”

Redeemer Lutheran School

concluded its 2012-13 school

year with a closing chapel on

Friday, May 31st. Looking back

on the year, it truly was a year

blessed by God. In all facets of

both spiritual and academic

growth, the hand of God was

present. We join together in

praising and thanking God for

His goodness. We are also

thankful to everyone who is part

of the Redeemer Family – stu-

dents, parents, families, teach-

ers, staff, and congregation. All

of you have been a blessing to

Redeemer Lutheran School.

Together, we have been able to

give thanks to God “with one

heart!”

“May the God

who gives en-

durance and

encouragement

give you a

spirit of unity

among yourselves

as you follow Christ

Jesus, so that with one

heart and

mouth you

may glorify

the God and Fa-

ther of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Romans 15:5-6

LOOKING

AHEAD!

As we prepare for the 2013-

14 school year at Redeemer

Lutheran School,

please be

sure to

tell others

about our excellent

school. Your invitation

to a family to consider Re-

deemer could have a significant

impact on both the child(ren)

and the family.

If you would like information

to share with a family or would

like Redeemer to make a con-

tact, please share this with Mr.

Boeder in the school office. He

is available to help in whatever

way he can regarding outreach

to prospective families.

TELL OTHERS ABOUT

REDEEMER’S OPTION FOR

HOME-SCHOOL STU-

DENTS!

As classroom space allows,

home-school students have the

opportunity to enroll as part-

time students in classes at Re-

deemer. Tuition for home-

school students is prorated,

based on the time that the stu-

dent is at Redeemer. If you

know of a home-school family

that might be interested in such

a program, please have them

contact Mr. Boeder for details.

BEFORE-SCHOOL CARE AT

REDEEMER!

Redeemer Lutheran School

will be offering “before school

care” starting with the new

school year in September.

Care will be available every

school day beginning at 7 a.m.

Details regarding this pro-

gram will be available through

the school office before the end

of May. In the mean time, if you

have any questions regarding

before school care, please con-

tact Mr. Boeder.

tion Bible School on Monday,

JUNE 10, through Thursday,

JUNE 13, from 9 a.m. to 11:30

a.m.

The VBS theme this year —

“Colossal Coaster World—

Facing Fear, Trusting God” — is

based on 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV):

For the Spirit God gave us

does not make us timid, but

gives us power, love and

self-discipline.

The curriculum will focus on

what we can learn from the life

of Paul.

Our RLS teachers are plan-

ning this event and will be

leading the VBS activities along

with Pastor Paul and Jared Bet-

terman, Redeemer’s Youth Co-

ordinator.

VBS is open for 4-year-olds

through students entering 5th

grade. Students entering 6th

grade and older are encour-

aged to be “VBS helpers.”

Registration forms are avail-

able from the church office.

6 Redeemer Good News June 2013

In His Grip,

Matt Mitchell

you need only to be

still.” (Exodus 14:14) I had

never heard that verse

before, and I was moved. I

woke up the next morning

with a song called “Oceans”

stuck in my head: “Spirit,

lead me where my trust is

without borders / let me

walk upon the waters /

wherever You may call me /

Take me deeper than my feet

could ever wander / and my

faith will be made stronger /

in the presence of my

Savior.” Finally, I

remembered something

Mike Zimmer taught me last

(Reflections continued from page 1) year. He posed the question,

“What do we do when we

don’t know what to do?” The

answer: seek the Lord while

He is near. Word. Prayer.

Yes. Get back to the

fundamentals, stronger than

before.

It came to me slowly, but

the Lord taught me a lesson

that I need to learn again and

again. I don’t know what the

future holds, but I’m thankful

that it’s out of my hands. Why

do I doubt? Why does anxiety

come before prayer? He has

never failed me yet. I think of

the old hymn, “What a Friend

We Have in Jesus”: “What

peace we often forfeit, what

needless pain we bear, all

because we do not carry

everything to God in prayer.”

Let go. Trust. Pray. Speak the

truth in love. If we truly

believe that God is good, He

is near, and that He is indeed

bigger than any obstacle we

face, then we can lay all our

anxiety down at His feet.

Then, and only then, can we

experience His perfect

peace, which does transcend

all understanding.

Redeemer Good News is a

monthly newsletter for

members and friends of

Redeemer Lutheran Church &

School in Wayzata.

Newsletter articles are due the

second Monday of the month.

Submit articles, news, and

event items to Jodi Bening at

jbening@redeemerwayzata

.org.

Comments and suggestions

are welcome.

The SPCC has been dili-

gently, heartily and prayerfully

considering 26 candi-

dates that were submit-

ted for Redeemer’s

Senior Pastor vacancy.

After reviewing the

Senior Pastor Position Descrip-

tion, Redeemer’s ministry

needs, and soliciting feedback

from the Board of Elders,

MMLG, Day School Board,

Teachers, Music Ministry par-

ticipants and members at large,

a profile of desired Senior Pas-

tor characteristics, talents, traits

and leadership experience was

developed.

Those desired traits, along

with feedback from the above

mentioned contributors, and

candidate evaluations

from the MN South Dis-

trict of the LCMS,

were then used to nar-

row the list of 26 to a

short list. That short

list was submitted

for the state-mandated back-

ground checks. Those have

been completed and the SPCC

will start a formal interview

process with these candidates.

That process should be com-

pleted by early June. A Call

recommendation will then be

made to MMLG and a Call meet-

ing by the voters to follow

shortly thereafter.

Please keep this “Divine Call

Process” in your prayers.
