Thinking this experience couldn’t possibly come to an end, Peter—spokesman of the apostles prone to putting his foot in his mouth—says, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” When Peter wants to pitch three tents, his senses are overwhelmed with the dazzling glory of God. This is something the patriarchs and prophets, psalmists and sages longed to see. How could there be anything better? Where else would anyone want to be? God, however, interjects. “While [Peter] was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.’” Peter wants to stay on top of the mountain, where he has glimpsed the glory of God; Jesus—God in the flesh—knows that His glory, His love, His divine life will be most fully revealed in the Cross, that total outpouring of self- gift, self-sacrifice, self-surrender. But the apostles don’t know it yet. And they won’t really believe it until it’s confirmed by the Resurrection. Which is why Jesus told them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” As Catholics, we anticipate our participation in the resurrected life to come. Like Abraham we are called to “Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you” (Genesis 12:1). Along the way we are exhorted to “Bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God” (2 Timothy 1:8b). Strength comes from God, we cannot do it on our own. How do we receive that strength? Through prayer, the sacraments, keeping the commandments, and belonging to a believing community. Lent is the time to let go of our limited vision of what is good. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving we profess our faith that this world—which God created good and died to redeem—is still not and never can be our lasting home. We are made for God, for a new heavens and a new earth, for the heavenly Jerusalem. We are destined for glory. We are called to intimate and unceasing union with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. En route our steps crisscross the road to Calvary. We each will walk with Jesus the Way of the Cross. MARCH 12, 2017 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT REFLECTING WITH THE PAROCHIAL VICAR

EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TRAINING

Come and be trained for the beautiful ministry of Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion! Anyone who is interested in ministering in our Masses, helping take Communion to many area nursing homes,

to those in Westchester hospital and homebound parishioners is invited. Teresa & Tim Geiger will lead the training.

The next training session is Saturday, April 1, at 9:00am (following the 8:15am Mass) in the Church.

Register for this or future training sessions online:www.stsusanna.org/eucharisticministers.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Are you looking for a Lenten prayer for yourself and your family? Walk with the Lord each Friday of Lent at 7:00pm in Church. We will pray the Stations of the Cross, walking with Jesus to Calvary and opening our hearts to His love and mercy.

Our quarterly Name Tag Sunday has been very well received. To continue this outreach, we need your help handing out nametags the weekend of March 25-26. Families are encouraged to participate. Sign up on the parish website: www.stsusanna.org/nametagsunday or contact Susan Hack to be a part of our efforts to build community at St. Susanna.

LAUNDRY HELP NEEDEDFOR THE SACRISTY!

We need a person(s) to help with the laundry that accumulates with our liturgies. We need help for the second Sunday of every month. If we get more than one person wanting to help, it could be every other month as well! It entails picking up the laundry and then bringing it back laundered and folded, hopefully, by Wednesday of that week. If you can help with this very important ministry or would like more information, please contact Susan Hack, ext. 3169 or [email protected].

Help bring the Light to those who no longer want to walk in darkness. Invite those who have never been baptized or who have been baptized in a non-Catholic tradition, as well as adult Catholics who have not been confirmed, to the monthly inquiry sessions. The first session will be held on Tuesday April 4th, 6:30pm.

For more information, please contact Susan Hack, ext. 3169 or [email protected] or visit: www.stsusanna.org/rcia.

March 12th: Forgiven

Forgiven explores the grace and healing offered in Confession and shows how this sacrament of mercy reveals the depth and bounty of God’s love. By looking at God’s revelation of His mercy in Scripture and making a step-by-step examination of the Rite itself, Forgiven communicates God’s invitation to each one of us to come experience His indescribable love in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

March 19th & 26th: The Woman and the Well (by Brant Pitre)

Have you ever felt like there’s no way God could ever love you? Maybe you know people with a very troubled past and a broken life who just can’t believe that Jesus loves them.

In this Bible study, Dr. Brant Pitre goes straight to the heart of the love of Christ by focusing on the powerful story of Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well. As he shows, when we read this well-known story through ancient Jewish eyes, all of a sudden we realize that this is not just a story of Jesus’ mercy and forgiveness, but a powerful symbol of God’s love for sinners

THIS WEEK, FROM THE ST. SUSANNA VINCENTIANS...

In the Gospel Jesus is transfigured and a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased: Listen to him.” Do we listen to Jesus when he asks us to take care of our brothers and sisters who are suffering? Your gift in the parish Society of St. Vincent de Paul chapter will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.

SHROUD ENCOUNTER

Shroud Encounter will be coming to St. Cecilia Catholic Church located at 3105 Madison Rd., in Cincinnati, OH. The event will be Thursday March 23rd at 7:00pm. Admission is free. A museum quality life-size replica will be on display.

Shroud Encounter is a production of the Shroud of Turin Education Project, Inc. and will be presented by international expert Russ Breault. The presentation is a fast moving, big-screen experience using over 200 images covering all aspects of Shroud research. The Shroud of Turin is the most analyzed artifact in the world yet remains a mystery. The 14-foot long linen cloth has been in Turin, Italy for over 400 years and bears the faint front and back image of a 5’10” bearded, crucified man with apparent wounds and bloodstains that match the crucifixion account as recorded in the bible. Millions of people over the centuries have believed it be the actual burial shroud of Jesus.

National Geographic called it “One of the most perplexing enigmas of modern times.” Shroud Encounter will cover all aspects of the history, science, art and theories of how the image may have been formed.

ST. SUSANNA IS GETTING A MAGAZINE!

This will be the second parish in the tri-state area to receive a full-color monthly magazine from Lighthouse Catholic Publishing that will go directly to parishioners’ homes free-of-charge. Each publication will feature a different family from St. Susanna’s, together with important parish news and wonderful faith-filled articles from Lighthouse. If your business might be interested in sponsoring the publication and/or you know of a family whose faith journey you would like to see represented, please contact Tobias Nathe, Publisher at 513-375-7805.

BRINGING JESUS TO OUR FRIENDS…

We have recently received a number of requests to provide a regular Communion service to the residents at Brookdale/Longcove

Point Residential center. We are blessed with so many volunteers who minister as teams at Chesterwood, Mason Christian Village, Heritage, and Cedar village… to name a few.

I am trying to see if we can surface a number of loving, caring volunteers to minister to our friends at Brookdale. If you are interested… don’t worry there will be training… please send Fr. Bob ([email protected]) your name, email, phone number and the day that is best for you to participate. Thank you in advance for your loving consideration. Our friends need to know we care and they are not forgotten.

RESPECT LIFE CALENDAR

THIS WEEK, FROM THE ST. SUSANNA RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY...

“To couples who cannot have children of their own, you are no less loved by God; your love for each other is complete and fruitful when it is open to others.”

OLIVE WOOD CARVING SALE

Bethlehem Christian Families have come to the United States on behalf of the Christian wood carvers of Bethlehem that rely on the tourism to support their families. Due to the bad situation and the interruption of the tourist trade, more than 800 families in the Holy Land are in danger of having to leave their homes in search of work. Their mission is to bring and sell olive wood

carvings to the Catholic Churches in the United States to help the Christian families remain in their homes and support their families.

Please plan on looking over and purchasing carved olive wood religious items the weekend of March 18th & 19th , 2017. Your help and support enables Christians to continue living in the Holy Land. Thank you in advance for your generous support of our brothers and sisters in Bethlehem.

The next program will begin the weekend of March 31 - April 2, 2017. Retrouvaille is a Catholic sponsored, confidential program open to all faiths. It offers a chance to rediscover yourself, and your spouse. It is for couples that have experienced a breakdown in communication, become unloving and uncaring, thinking of separation or divorce or who are separated. The Glory We Are Called To

Raphael’s greatest painting, perhaps the greatest painting of all the Renaissance, depicts today’s

Gospel account of the transfiguration. Raphael loved this painting so much he never sold it. He hung the painting over his bed, and at his death he turned to look at it.

The transfiguration of the Lord reminds us of the glory we are all called to even when that glory is hidden. When God called Abraham, it was to make of him a great nation and to give him glory. But Abraham had to leave what he had and enter into the unknown to receive what was promised. We, too, need to set out and leave our expectations if we ever hope to enter the mysteries of faith and discover the reward we are searching for. Setting out and leaving behind are like little “deaths” that prepare us for the glory of salvation.

The Father revealed Jesus’ glory to his three closest apostles so their faith would survive the cross. God didn’t want them to become disillusioned or frightened by his suffering and death. A voice came down from heaven and confirmed Jesus as the Son to assure the apostles that even if he didn’t seem like the Messiah in his human nature, he most certainly was.

For ReflectionWhat images and objects around my house or workplace remind me of my faith? How can I be a sign of the glory to which we are called?

Piece: The Transfiguration, circa 1518Artist: Raphael SanzioLocation: Vatican Museums’ Pinacoteca

It was this image of the glorified Jesus that Raphael reflected on and labored over for years. He needed to see this transfiguration during his life and at the hour of his death to keep the faith. So do we.
