#8 = Academic Space Audit & Principles

Smallest CSU footprint (88 acres main campus) Oldest campus in CSU—no new state building since

1988 Outdated classrooms—e.g., “Flubber classroom” (Robin

Williams, filmed in Washington Square Hall 109 for circa 1950s classroom)

Starting Spring/Summer 2012—Academic Affairs audit and allocation principles

#9 = Technology Infrastructure Improvements Working with campus ITS: Improve wireless--capacity continues to be added weekly.

~50 wireless access points added in the last few weeks (e.g., Library, Sweeney Hall, surrounding areas).

Nearly 2,400 wireless connections were added to the campus network to a total capacity of roughly 26,000 concurrent connections campus-wide.

Wireless printing in multiple locations to improve solutions to wired printing from their wireless device and remove the campus wireless interference, relieving wireless congestion.

Secure wireless access (WPA2) is planned for installation in May

End user wireless documentation for the ITS Web page is being developed for posting this semester

Please notify ITS via the Help Desk (Email: [email protected] 408-924-1530) if you encounter further wireless problems so ITS can troubleshoot the problem.

summer, targeting 36 more. Campus computer refresh cycle plan. LMS Advisory Committee—working hard! Working with industry leaders on

infrastructure, software, hardware, devices. Funding Source? One-time funds restricted

for technology use only.

THE BIG BUDGET RESET:

There will be no going back to the old budget days. We cannot rely on state funding as our primary source of funding. The campus will need to cut $16.5 million next year, 2012-13 (baseline cuts + revenue) Another ~ $16.5 million in 2013-14

How to meet our cuts by finding NEW sources, WHILE seeking to maintain and enhance quality:

Core Principles for Budget Planning Beginning 2011-12, the university created the San José State and Academic Affairs strategic plans. To prepare for significant budget reductions, the President’s Cabinet proposes that all cost saving and revenue generating activities shall be in alignment with the priorities that have been identified in the University's Strategic Vision 2017 and Academic Plan 2017. The core principles outlined below will guide this process.

1. Do not compromise the safety and well-being of our university community and its members, and seek to safeguard our students and all employees during a very difficult time.

2. Maintain and enhance student learning by protecting the quality of academic programs and courses for students which includes providing critical support to faculty in teaching, scholarly activity and service activities and increase student learning and success.

3. Balance quality and efficiency while meeting the university’s enrollment targets and assessing the impact and consequences of changes for student learning, accreditation by external entities and faculty and staff engagement.

Page 30: Reflections on the 1 Year & Budget Update...Dr. Kathleen Roe, Health Science WASC Steering Committee – 33 members! Kathleen Roe, Chair Thalia Anagnos, Patricia Backer, Michael Beaubien,

Core Principles for Budget Planning 4. Identify, implement and evaluate innovative solutions to enhance

student learning and success in making progress to degrees and certificates.

5. Maintain the university’s critical services and positions at an adequate level for students, faculty, staff and administrators needs.

6. Continue to identify and aggressively implement new revenue opportunities.

7. Maintain a commitment to the use of appropriate technology when there is evidence of improved educational effectiveness and that leads to a more efficient means of delivering quality services.

8. Streamline processes and procedures to achieve greater efficiencies across all divisions of the university.

9. Give consideration to expenditures which can be delayed or deferred for a period of time.

10. Pay special attention to bolstering morale, engendering positive direction, civility and integrity, and increase opportunities for meaningful communication and consultation across all sectors of the university.

Global Happiness? • The Gallup World Poll (E. Diener) world wide survey of more

than 136,000 people in 132 countries (representing 96% of world’s population) from 2005 to 2006 to explore factors related to happiness (e.g., income, standard of living, food and shelter, types of conveniences owned, whether psychological needs were met, felt respected, family/friends they could count on in an emergency, and how free they felt to choose their daily activities--autonomy, opportunity to learn new things, do “what one does best”).

• The new analysis found that life satisfaction rises generally with personal and national income, but positive feelings, are much more strongly associated with other factors, such as feeling respected, having autonomy and social support, and working at a fulfilling job.
